Itinerary
Nijo-jo Castle was built in 1603 as the Kyoto residence of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first shogun of the Edo Period (1603-1868). It is one of the best-known castles in Japan, its palace buildings are arguably the best surviving examples of castle palace architecture of Japan's feudal era, and the castle was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994. Nijo-jo Castle can be divided into three areas: the Honmaru (main circle of defense), the Ninomaru (secondary circle of defense), and some gardens around them. The entire castle grounds and the Honmaru are surrounded by stone walls and moats. The admission ticket for Nijo Castle, which includes access to the Ninomaru-goten Palace, costs 1,300 yen. Please ensure you have the appropriate cash for entry. Thank you. ( During the days when Nijo Castle was closed, visit Heian Jingu Shrine instead. This Shinto shrine is located in Sakyō-ku, Kyoto, and is recognized as an important cultural property of Japan. )
Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion)is a Zen Buddhist temple in Kyoto, Japan. A breathtaking UNESCO World Heritage site renowned for its dazzling golden exterior and serene gardens. The name Golden Pavilion is derived from the gold leaf that the pavilion is covered in. The gold employed was intended to mitigate and purify any pollution or negative thoughts and feelings toward death. The Golden Pavilion is a three-story building on the grounds of the Rokuon-ji temple complex. Each floor has a different architectural style. The pavilion successfully incorporates three distinct styles of architecture, which are shinden, samurai, and zen.
The bamboo forests of Arashiyama are a must-see when visiting Kyoto, serving as a symbol of the city. This stunning and serene natural attraction is known for its towering bamboo stalks and tranquil ambiance. Walking along the peaceful paths surrounded by lush greenery will help put your mind at ease. You can truly feel time slow down as you take in the beauty of nature. The groves are especially captivating when a light breeze dances through, causing the tall bamboo stalks to sway gently back and forth.
Nonomiya Shrine is a Shinto shrine in the Arashiyama district on the west side of the city of Kyoto. Unlike most shrines that feature iconic vermilion torii gates, Nonomiya Shrine has a distinctive black torii gate known as a kuroki torii. Despite its small size, the shrine has a lengthy history, founded in antiquity as a purification shrine for imperial princesses who were appointed as priestesses for Ise Shrine. Nonomiya Shrine has a reputation for helping and interceding on behalf of women, and many parishioners are women who want to find love or wish for children and a safe childbirth. Many of the omamori on sale at the shrine reflect the theme of women’s happiness, and you can find a variety of amulets available at the shrine office.
The Kimono Forest is a distinctive textile art installation made up of 600 clear acrylic cylinders, each standing 2 meters tall. These pillars are adorned with vibrant kimono fabrics featuring a range of designs, from elegant floral patterns to geometric shapes and traditional Japanese symbols. The installation showcases 32 traditional Kyo-yuzen designs. The Kimono Forest is a must-see attraction that provides a unique and enchanting perspective on traditional Japanese textiles and craftsmanship.
The Togetsukyo Bridge is the most iconic landmark in Arashiyama. Originally built during the Heian Period (794-1185), it was reconstructed most recently in the 1930s. This famous bridge spans the Katsura River and provides picturesque views of the surrounding mountains and riverscape.
“Rilakkuma” means “Bear in a relaxed mood.” Rilakkuma is someone impossible to be hated by others. It’s a lovely place to wander around and the Rilakkuma cafe & shop blend in beautifully. You will be drawn into Rilakkuma’s world, where you’ll embrace a lazy and relaxed lifestyle while enjoying everything Rilakkuma does. The first floor features a variety of exclusive items related to Rilakkuma that can only be found in Japan. The second floor is a café that offers lunch, drinks, and snacks, accompanied by cute Rilakkuma character. There are also Rilakkuma plushies on the tables to take photos with.
There are around 30,000 Inari shrines in Japan, Fushimi Inari Taisha is the head shrine, to worship the Shinto god of rice, Inari. The shrine is renowned for Senbon Torii, thousands of vermilion red torii gates, which create a stunning and immersive tunnel-like pathway up the sacred Mount Inari. In the 1300 years since its establishment in 711AD, people have gathered here to pray for bountiful harvests, business prosperity, the safety of their home and family, and the fulfillment of all other wishes.

Long day from Osaka. Left at 8 got back at 6:30. Covered lots. Jackson did a great job of shepherding the group and moving things along.
It was a great tour! Jackson was amazing, rating him a 5-star overall!!!
Jackson was great. Got to see all the highlights in one day
We spent 8 hours exploring Kyoto with Jackson, and the entire day felt effortless and special. He tailored the day to our interests, shared fascinating insights about the temples and local culture, and kept a great energy the whole time. Jackson truly made us feel welcome and gave us memories we’ll keep forever.
Lovely tour guide Amy, very informative and enjoyable day
Showed all key sights and let us know best picture area. Tour guide was very informative and engaging.
This tour packs a lot of siteseeing into one day. Our tour guide Anson was very well organised and ran to a good time schedule. He provided clear instructions and had a great knowledge of the sites visited. Lots to see so it means you're on the go for most of the day. We felt rushed at times but well worth it. A great tour if you have limited time.
Wonderful n memorable experience. Guide was helpful n careful.
It was a really great and detailed tour. Everything went so smoothly and was lots of fun thanks to our guide, Chris who also shared some little stories about the places we visited. As a family, we saw everything without rushing or wasting any time. The bus was also very comfortable. We definitely recommend it to everyone!
Cali was an exceptional guide throughout our Kyoto Top Four Highlights Day Trip. From the moment we met, she set a warm, welcoming tone and made the entire experience feel effortless and enjoyable. What stood out most was Cali’s deep knowledge of Kyoto’s history and culture. At every stop from the iconic Fushimi Inari Taisha to the other major highlights she shared, context, and insights that brought each place to life. Her explanations were clear, engaging, and never rushed. Cali also had a great sense of timing. She knew the best photo spots, helped us avoid crowds, and made sure everyone in the group felt comfortable and included. Her friendly personality and genuine passion for guiding made the day feel special. Overall, Cali turned a beautiful itinerary into an unforgettable experience. I highly recommend her to anyone visiting she truly cares about giving guests a memorable day.
Even in the rain, Cali made the whole day vibrant and thoroughly entertaining. The tour packed in so much, a definite must do if in Osaka or Kyoto
the tour is really worth it. It hit all the beautiful places of Kyoto and its history.
Jackson was great! Excellent english and humor! I feel like the tour itself goes to one too many places. Going to 3 locations and making the time spent at each one longer would be better. Some locations get rushed as is.
Had a great day viewing the sights of Kyoto. Our tour guide Chris was very kind, friendly, and patient 😊. It was worth it to get a tour of some of these iconic structures and Chris provided some really great historical information. Highly recommend. Our favorite part was the Nijo Castle part where we got to learn about the shogun period.
We liked everything. Our guide Jun was very helpfull and cooperative. He told us history facts, tradition, culture points. Very nice time
Jun is very kind and cooperative gide. The excursion was great, a lot if explanations and history facts. Highly recommend
Our day was great! We had constant contact before pick up with our guide, Chris, to ensure we were able to meet up on time. He was very friendly, knowledgeable and ensured everyone had pictures taken at the different locations. The information he shared and stories along the way made for an interesting experience. We were prepared in advance with a preview of what to expect which made it exciting. The locations gave you a good taste of the city. 10/10 for Chris and the Tour!
Great trip, but the pickup spot in Japan, in the heat, is hard to tolerate. No water, no shade, especially if the pickup is delayed for any reason! This applied to all bus trips I took in Japan from public meeting points.
Lee put real effort into providing detailed instructions, links, and organization to ensure collaborative group experience. Thank you, and all the best on your future tours.
Simple day trip with 4 sites of great interest. Our guide, Jack did the job well. Oh and not to forget which is not included: do the rickshaw for 30 minutes, it is all worth your 10,000 Yen. You do not have to walk, you ride in style the rickshaw drivers are entertaining and they do wonderful and memorable pictures.
Good bus tour to get to the main Kyoto attractions in one day. I took this tour with my 2 sons, 22 and 16 years old. We felt that we had plenty of time at each site we visited. Our guide Jack gave us some highlights of the places we saw but we were given free reign once we were there. Overall this was a good tour and just as advertised. We were staying in Osaka but chose to join the bus in Kyoto since it was much faster to take the train to Kyoto than to meet the bus in Osaka and then ride it to Kyoto.
Jack was amazing and this tour hit all the best spots to visit in Kyoto in 1 day! We highly recommend this tour.
Well-coordinated tour, perfect for first-timers. Great choices of four locations, and we had sufficient time for each. Guide Lee provided overview forceach location in the bus beforehand. He took pictures for us and the props were a nice toich. The us allowd us to take a catnap which was quite helpful. Lee was funny, made many great jokes.
Lee was a great tour guide, very knowledgeable, organized, and helpful. I enjoyed his jokes and upbeat spirit.
The experience was very poor we had the tour guide Chris was very upsetting. First this is supposed to be an English tour his English skills were very poor we hardly understood him. Second he never waits for his group he’s racing down the street and we are running after him trying to get to the place he left us alone and we were on our own. The tour guide is supposed to give history of the place we had to do everything on our own. If we had rented a taxi and went by ourselves it would have been better than going with this tour guide. Even my kids were comparing him to another tour guide we had earlier and said he was terrible. Do not recommend Chris!
An interesting trip to visit 4 main attractions in Kyoto. Good for first time travellers like us who wants to visit as many attractions as possible. The tour guide Jackson is friendly, patient and provides clear instructions. We had enjoy the trip. Thank you Jackson.
Frederick dai was a great guide. Ever smiling and always friendly and helpful. 8 h spent with him were like 8 min. He was very knowledgeable about the sights and passed some really good info to us.
The tour was good and covered the places mentioned in the tour with sufficient time to experience the space & shop a little, have lunch & be selective about what we want to see on priority at Arashimaya. Very crowded though owing to the Sakura season. The guide Jack, was good with imparting information and explaining the routes to take, where to eat etc
This was a wonderful tour that was comprehensive and convenient. Saki, our tour guide was personable, attentive and thorough in sharing her knowledge of the places we went to. The tour was well run and organized and highly recommended!
This was a rare disappointment of the viator tours we have booked in the past, and we have booked many dozens across many countries. A few things in particular: 1. Bus and tour guide were late at the meeting point. Though likely delayed by the weather since we were picked up in Kyoto and their first pick up was it Osaka. This, however, is one of the issues with their time management, they don't allow for any unforeseen timing issues. 2. Time at each stop was purely calculated versus actual time it will take to complete whats promised. Each stop there were people late but not at the fault of their own, they were simply given too little time. Latecomers to the bus were shamed publicly. One family was late by 9 minutes and we were literally asked whether we should leave or wait for them even though they had elderly. If you will take two restroom breaks instead of one you'll be late, if you have too smoke breaks you'll be late, if your kids spend too much time at the souvenir shop you'll be late... Those types of scenarios... For example, at the bamboo forest and shrine stop, we were given 2 hours and 25 minutes to see three things and have lunch. According to Google maps just to walk to and from stop and bamboo garden is 15 minutes each way, if you add another shrine, posted (route poll) time to it is 9 minutes giving you another 18, plus you'd have to have lunch where just the waittime for most restaurants is half an hour, for most families add another half an hour for food consumption. There are plenty of souvenir shops for most would probably spend another 5 minutes at let's say four shops giving you another 20 minutes. Add a couple of restroom breaks, a smoke break or a random quick drink experience.... And you're late. Our family is fairly young and we're in good shape so making pace is not an issue but we have seen some folks with moderate mobility problems take much more time given there's a bit of an elevation and some portions of the tour. 2. Tour guide... A few things here... Fiona, she was not observing the movement of the whole group of 48 people, therefore at times it was difficult to track where she was and when she started to speak. At another point there was a railroad crossing, which she told us about - we need to make sure we're mindful when the trains are coming because it will take a few minutes to wait for the train, then we literally observed her run ahead and cross at the very last moment even though most of her group was behind the train tracks leading to an absurd event where we were all waiting that crossed just to meet her, along waiting for us. Additionally, to us it was difficult to understand her because she was wearing a face mask. Though I understand her personal choice with regards to personal protections like her face mask, it seems that this is where her personal choice is in conflict with her occupational duty to be clear-voiced and easy to understand, being a tour guide. So all in all this tour to us was more like an Uber with a pretty old bus that to us seen somed subpar - no bathroom, poor air conditioning with all foggy windows. It got us to the places that we wanted to see but didn't provide much more than that. For our last leg we just took a taxi instead of returning via bus, it was just more pleasant. Financial component is not important to us, this is much more experiential, so we're not concentrating on value in this review but rather on experience. Hopefully this is helpful, given all of the context we're still not ranking this too low and giving it three stars out of five, in our world = barely okay with much improvement potential.
Great kick start to Osaka to understand the culture history and people. Where to eat and Josh was very knowledgeable on the history
Or guide Was Jackson, and he was really good. The bus was clean and nice, and we really enjoyed the sights. It felt like they spent the right amount of time at each of the stops.
The places we went to were amazing, sadly our guide didn’t come around the places with us to explain things . She was not present much which was disappointing. We had no idea of the relevance or history of things we were looking at. Her instructions were at times confusing leaving us unsure of how to progress. Talking to other sorry members they felt the same way. I think this was a personal issue with this guide as we have had many other guides on trips which have been brilliant . The trip is very worthwhile to see the places we went to .
Our tour guide Anson was excellent. He communicated with the group very well and gave all clear instructions through a whatsapp group, he was very knowledgeable, shared different interesting things, and kept our energy going. He also had a good humor and was patient. I had a great time, thanks Anson!
This tour was a great and convenient way to see the big highlights in Kyoto. It would have been very hard to hit these spots on our own. Our guide, Teddy, was very knowledgeable and entertaining. He took great care of us. Highly recommend!
Lots of good information from the tour guide. Enjoyed all the details he sent via WhatsApp and can look back at.
The Tour Guide (Theodore) was so very patient to all of us and a very jolly guy. He is very knowledgeable as a tour guide ( he knows the history of the places we went into)… The places written on the Itineraries were all visited…
Comfortable bus, great tour guide Anson, Good tour content. It covered 4 important sights in Kyoto i.e. Ninjo Castle, Kinkoktsu, Arashiyama and Funari Inari. all without the stress of co-ordinating the subway and bus routes.
The tour was awesome. We covered multiple sites that are “must see places” in Kyoto. We had a great time with Amy. She is very organized, funny and knowledgeable. We did so much in such a little time.
It was a good one day Kyoto trip option with major site seeing place. Tour guide, Jackson was informative.
A great way to see many iconic sights in one day. Pick up was prompt and day went to plan. Timing was suffice to explore each place. Anson was great with his explanations.
Anson, our tour guide, was excellent. He gave thorough directions and kept the large group informed and on pace. It was an excellent choice to see the highlights of Kyoto in one day. Anson was very knowledgeable and gave lots of details about Kyoto and the places we saw.
A well planned day out with a friendly and informative tour guide. Brilliant places to visit with plenty of time on a guided tour as well as free time on it and great value for money too. I very much enjoyed the day.
It was a very disappointing experience, so many people in the tour, the tour guy (even that I know it wasn’t his fault and he was super nice) had a very heavy accent and we couldn’t understand anything he was trying to explain the whole tour. Also the tour has false advertisement because they say they are supposed to take you to senbon Torii and they didn’t, we ended up leaving the tour half way through
It was a good experience and the tour guide was very knowledgeable (Charlie). Very well planned and executed
Excellent tour. Saki our tour guide was knowledgeable, funny, friendly and very passionate about her job.
We had the best day trip to Kyoto! Thanks to guide Brian who made it so organised! We could have never been able to arrange it like this! His pleasant and cheerful nature made him a joy to spend the day with! He provided the most useful tips in each spot we visited.. THANKS BRIAN FOR THE AMAZING DAY IN KYOTO🤩
First of all big thanks to our guide Brian for an excellent tour. He was busy the whole day making sure we had all the information of how to get round each attraction, and how to find our way back to the bus on time. He was very warm and sincere and gave great insight. For me this was a well paced tour with a small group and we had plenty of time to see all 4 sights. We were free to explore each one at our own pace with enough information of what to focus on depending on how fast we wanted to go. Also really good recommendations for food at lunchtime. Overall a really excellent tour, good value and highly recommended if you don’t have much time in Kyoto and want to tick off a lot of places in one day.
Our Tour Guide Theodore Chin was super informative and expert on Japanese history, it was real fun trip with him, The Tour covered all main four attractions and we are happy with the fast pace
