Nice day trip to see Himeji castle and other scenic areas of Japan. Our guide Nick was excellent and the lunch was very good. Well worthwhile!

Itinerary
Himeji Castle, also known as "White Heron Castle," holds the distinction of being Japan's first UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site and is counted among Japan's national treasures. Unlike many historical buildings in Japan, Himeji Castle has never been destroyed or burnt down, making it one of the 12 original castles still standing in Japan today. Visitors to the castle can explore its extensive grounds and climb to the top floor for a breathtaking panoramic view of the surrounding area.
When visiting Himeji Castle, a notable area to explore for dining options is Kouroen Former Residence Park. Here, you'll find a charming lineup of restaurants and souvenir shops. This park creatively repurposes Edo-period residences, transforming them into dining establishments where you can enjoy a meal amidst historical surroundings. PLEASE NOTE: Unti1 February 28th, entrance fee inside the castle IS INCLUDED. From March 1st, to explore the interior of the castle structures, please purchase a 2,500 JPY entry ticket yourself at the castle on the day.
After descending from Himeji Castle, visitors can take a leisurely stroll through Kokoen Garden, conveniently located adjacent to the castle grounds. Kokoen Garden is renowned for its meticulously designed landscape, divided into nine distinct areas, each showcasing different styles from the Edo period. Before returning to the bus, visitors have the opportunity to enjoy a leisurely lunch (not included) at one of the nearby shops or restaurants situated near the entrance of the castle area. This provides a relaxing way to conclude the visit, surrounded by the historical ambiance of Himeji Castle and its picturesque surroundings. PLEASE NOTE: Unti1 February 28th, entrance fee inside IS INCLUDED. From March 1st, please purchase entry ticket yourself at the castle on the day.
The statue is a tribute to Nene, the wife of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, a 16th century feudal lord and chief Imperial minister.
It's the main street of the city, from Himeji Station to Himeji Castle. Full of restaurants, shops, department stores and hotels.
The next destination of the tour is the hot spring town Arima. Relax in the historic Arima Onsen, known for its therapeutic hot springs. Enjoy a quiet walk around this town, home to one of the three most famous onsen in the country. The entire area can be explored on foot and you can find old wooden houses, shrines and temples among other places worth a visit. (Not include entry tickets to the hot springs.)
The main reason for visiting this park is to get a great picture opportunity. There are two large, full size, Shachihoko fish ridge end tiles here. You can use them to frame a picture of the main castle keep.
Our final destination will be Mount Rokko, a popular spot in the Kansai region, offering breathtaking panoramic views. Immerse yourself in the beauty of nature and savor the tranquility of this mountainous retreat.

The Himeji Castle tour allows for some stunning photos. Walking up the main keep of the castle and then walking through the housing for the princess and ladies in waiting gives viewers a sense of what it was like to live in the castle and a bit if architecture and history. The bigger payoff for me though was walking around the grounds and taking pictures. I rented the audio guide, but it's not very good. You're better off using the Himeji App on your phone. The next stop at Arima Onsen does offer a shot of water rushing down a viaduct, but otherwise it's only useful for people taking a head-to-toe bath in the mineral spring. Only our guide did that, so most of the rest of us had 90 minutes of down time and quite a few of the restaurants were closed on Wednesday. Mt Rokko offers more stunning views. Bring a jacket because temps are in the upper 40F (8C) range. Koji is a fun guide. He took time to get to know each of us and had us all laughing on the bus to these sites.
It was a long day but entirely worth it. Our guide, Geri, was very helpful and took extra pains to explain our visits. Wasn’t sure I would embrace the onsen experience but totally enjoyed it. Hemiji of course was fabulous. Mr Rokko was a bit of a surprise -,wasn’t expecting the view nor the height. Great day. Great tour.
Sometimes these one day trips are a bit hit and miss. This wasn’t, it was a hit all round. Gary, our guide, was exceptional. He didn’t excessively prattle on but provided us with the essential information wrapped up with a sense of humour. It was an hour & a half to get to our first destination from Osaka and then shorter trips for the rest. We were given a generous four hours to explore the castle and surrounding gardens which you need. It even allowed time for a sit down lunch. Be warned, the climb to the top of the castle keep is a little bit step so take your time and enjoy the views and history explained on each of the levels. On a hot summers day in Japan even an old bloke (64) like myself got to the top and you will appreciate the natural aircon coming in from the open windows. Next stop Arima Onsen was as picturesque as one would expect from a hot springs in the mountains. It is also a foodie’s delight with an amazing selection of local cuisine and even had its own craft brewery! Unfortunately I had recently had surgery on my back so my stitches prevented me from going in the baths but those that did loved it. For those nervous about getting their kit off there is also a free hot spring you can dip your feet in. Last stop was Mt. Rokko where we were lucky enough to have spectacular views over Osaka. It was then only 50 minutes back to our meeting point to cap off a long but thoroughly worthwhile day.
Mike was a great guide and my brother and I had a wonderful time seeing the sights of Osaka. Himeiji Castle was the highlight, but the whole day was wonderful!
This was a great and knowledgeable trip thanks to our tour guide, Harid. He is a funny guy who knows how to talk about Japanese history. Super friendly and accommodating, he took us through the day and made sure we were well looked after. Highly recommended!
Nick was great…………………….…………………………………. Highly recommend the tour but on a cooler day. I’m was sick the whole day due to being pregnant
This is a beautiful experience combining old castle, hot springs and beautiful view of Osaka from Rocco mountain top.
One of the lousiest tour guide . No explanation of anything. Didn’t care about travellers . Worst experience in last 10 yrs .
Mike was informative and kept us running timely to cover all sites as posted. The bus and driver were also very nice. The sites were great and we got to experience everything that we wanted. The food was ok!
Definitely worth doing a guided tour, our tour guide Gary was very knowledgeable and determined to look after all of us on the bus and throughout the day.
Great to learn new things about Japan. Very informative and once in a lifetime experience with lots of sunshine and lots of exercise walking around. Only cost about $66 USD not including the lunch which was about $15 with udon, eel and tempura.
I took this tour in May with Hari with a medium sized group. We had several opportunities to explore Himeji Castle and Arima Town. I had a good experience with this tour. Our guide Hari was a fount of stories regarding each site. I was impressed by the majesty of the castle built to defend against military attack. I enjoyed soaking my feet in the hot foot bath of Arima Onsen and wandering around the town. We finished the day with a spectacular view of Osaka from Mt. Rokko
It was a totally unique learning experience--one that widened my perspective on Japanese culture. Harid, our guide was a super duper nice fellow. He had a sense of humor and was so accommodating! I highly recommend this tour and Harid our helpful tour guide!
Gary was great. Very organized and knowledgeable. Himeji Castle was incredible. Unfortunately, traffic in and out of Osaka led to a very long day.
I guess it is a hit or miss with these tours. What you visit is amazing but sadly the command of English of the guides could be insufficient which leads to lots of confusion.
We had a very peaceful day enjoying this amazing castle. Gary, our guide, was very helpful and super considerate making sure we had everything we needed. Be aware that the stairs are very steep in the main keep. There are plenty of great vantage points for photos, such as the long gallery, and even along the pathway between buildings. We booked without a meal and were easily able to purchase food along the way. The mountain view was incredible as we could see all the way to the sea.
Everything was perfect, with the perfect and very clean Onsen topping it off. The guide was very professional, capable, and kind. The driver was very capable.
Although it was raining. The experience was was warm due to the kindness of the tour guide. She was patient and made sure the client made a choices and voted what to choose considering the situation. She made sure ( her name I think starts with B) , that clients were safe and no one was left behind . The hot spring experience although was short but great experience. I respected the Japanese culture indeed. Cherry blossoms was beautiful and worthwhile. Thanks a lot. From Lucia
Harid was great, although there was 44 people in the tour, he treated each of us so well, we might have mistaken it to be a private tour. His attention to all of us was that good. Kudos to Harid and the coach driver.
Our day trip to Meiji Castle, Arima Onsen, and Mt. Rokko with Gary was great.. Gary is an outstanding tour guide—attentive, thoughtful, and always looking out for every guest in the group. He made sure everyone felt comfortable, informed, and included throughout the entire journey. His passion for the destinations and for his work really stood out. You can tell he genuinely loves what he does. He was also well-prepared and organized. The itinerary flowed smoothly, and his deep knowledge of each location enriched the trip with meaningful context, history, and local insights. The bus was clean, comfortable, and provided a smooth ride, making it easy to relax and fully enjoy the day. Overall, this was a perfectly executed tour, made memorable by Gary’s dedication and professionalism. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a seamless and enriching day trip experience.
Himeji Castle is stunning…the grounds are huge, manage your time wisely. The garden is pretty, we went for cherry blossom season and the trees are gorgeous. The garden not quite “awake yet” with bushes and other flowers, but the pond areas are still beautiful. Luna was a great guide, and very attentive. We had a great time!
Sometimes, in life, you make a mistake but things turn out for the best. This was one such day. My wife and I had booked a few trips for our Japanese adventure and this trip was the last. Only we hadn't booked with VIP Japan Tours. We were booked with a different company via our Klook app. We turned up at VIP Villas for our pick-up only to find no sign of our tour. There were, obviously, many people there for VIP Japan and a list of groups for their 4 buses. We were getting quite stressed and I approached a VIP tour guide. This chap turned out to be the legendary Gary. I was explaining our situation and he just took control. He got me to whatsapp him our tour details and said he would sort it out with them but we could go on his bus. WOW!!! So we hop on and away we go. Shortly after that I realised, whilst checking our original booking, that we had arrived a day early :-( Gary wasn't phased but enjoyed telling the rest of the bus of our.....er.....error hahaha He said, and followed through with it, that he would honour our booking and pay our entry fees into Himeji Castle and Gardens So, notwithstanding the embarrassment, we settled in. I don't really know what to say, really, other than Gary was brilliant throughout. His English is excellent and, boy, does he like to use it. Absolute diamond. He entertained us on the journey with facts and figures, Japanese custom and culture and made us all feel very much like "My guys" Very much a team player he looked after all the group. Taking particular interest in the welfare of an elderly Argentinian lady, travelling alone, and a young Taiwanese couple. At the castle he guided a large group, despite this being classed as free time, around and certainly knows his stuff. Very very informative. We thoroughly enjoyed the Castle then, also, wandered around the gardens next door. We grabbed some lunch from the convenience store and sat outside the garden entrance whilst the main group enjoyed the pre-booked restaurant. At Arima we chose not to take a bath but we did have a lovely wander around and took advantage of the free, community, foot spa in the town square. Have to say that was so so good. Local families, mums with kids all sat chatting away and our feet really did feel much improved ;-) By the time we reached Mount Rokka it was overcast a bit and cold so we couldn't appreciate the view so much. Definitely worth a visit. All in all, rescued by our Knight in shining armour, from being on the wrong trip on the wrong day and like Gary said himself, we now "have a connection" Great man, great trip. Obviously, no idea how good or bad the trip we were meant to be on was BUT we won the lottery. Book this trip 10/10, demand you get Gary's bus Some things are meant to be Domo arigato gozaimasu
Not the trip we anticipated. The guide mainly gave time slots of when and where to meet. We ended up having 4hours to ourselves to see Himeji Castle (there is nothing inside it really, you go through 6 floors of no displays, but if you're interested in interior architecture, then maybe it's worth considering). The Gardens are nice, but since nothing is blooming yet, you can only see the arrangements. The tour provider didn't inform us prior to the trip that Mt Rosso is unavailable, thus the guide extended the time in the onsen to 2h. It would've been better if the he asked how many people wanted to extend the time to 2h, because it seemed that most people didn't go to the onsen and were to wander the streets waiting for the very few who did. Now, we decided not to go to the onsen as many other people, thus ended up walking around the city and were told we can go shopping. It was also very cold. We did inform about not wanting to go to the onsen and ask whether it would be possible to even take another public transport back to Osaka so we could tick off a few of the planned things there, but that wasn't an option. The benefit of this trip, I guess, was being driven to Himeji.
I personally only went to the castle as I had unexpected business to attend to in Tokyo that came up mid tour, but it was incredible. Himeji castle is mind-blowing and worth visiting, history buff or not.
The main attraction Hijemi Castle and gardens well be worth visiting. The quality of the tour was very poor because Meeting place unsuitable Transportation ancient and uncomfortable Guide uninformative and misleading Second attraction - hot springs closed I was double charged for castle entry Lunch included pork despite being assured that there wasn’t any Third attraction facilities and shop closed on arrival Tour overran by two hours
Gary was wonderful throughout the tour. He was very attentive and accommodated for everyone during the tour. It was a small group of people and every stop along the way produced me with a wonderful experience.
The trip was wonderful. Our tour guide was Gary and his knowledge was amazing. He was very engaging and fun as well. One example is while we are at lunch not only did he assist us he was also assisting others in the restaurant that weren't even on our tour. Highly recommend.
Great day, wonderful castle and amazing view from Mt Rokko. Enjoyable look around the pretty Arima Onsen town. Thanks Mike!
The trip was great. Informative and full of great things to see. The lunch option was fantastic. But there is good food around if you choose not to. I’d do it. Food was great. It was a long day. But worth the trip.
Gary , our guide was kind , knowledgeable and friendly. Bus was clean , driver was so experienced. We had lunch that offered with tour, food was really good. I will recommend this tour to my friends and family .
The tour was well organized well priced. The guide “ Gary” is of great knowledge and explained a lot about the historic fact about the spots we’ve been to. I do recommend this tour for first timers like me.
To be honest, I was not that impressed by this tour. Our tour guide was someone who was simply taking us around. He was more concerned about managing time rather than providing a great opportunity for the group. Yes he obliged us by offering to take pictures but I think he needed to be more knowledgeable about the places he was taking us to. This is a Viator experience that did not impress.
The castle was amazingly beautiful. As lunch was booked did not have enough time to reach the top of main keep after seeing princess living quarters. Very steep steps can be very challenging for some seniors like me with knee problems. Arima onsen only 1 person went and rest of us didn’t have towel to take advantage of public foot spring. A little disappointed as not much else there except souvenirs and food. Stunning night panorama from Mt Rokko. Would give 3.5 rating if I could. Found it rather odd and a little offensive when guide repeatedly addressed the group as “My dear guys”.
Had a great day with Harry our guide who was super knowledgeable and a great character . Loved the castle and gardens , arima was a nice to explore and my rokko views of osaka were fantastic. The pick up point VIP villa namba is not hard to find , bus was clean and comfortable.
This trip was very good. We had good amount of time to see everything. The only negative is the fluency of English of the guide.
This was a long day but totally worth it. Gary did a great job of giving a brief history and tid bits on what we would be seeing before each location. It made things so much easier to navigate with his guidance. Lunch waa amazing! Arima has tattoo friendly public baths so don't be discouraged if you have tattoos and think you'll be missing out.
The Tour is Fantastic for those who are wanting the history behind the castle. Our Guide Gary was Brilliant with lots of knowledge. Well organised and very helpful. The amount of time at each stop was perfect. Always make sure on any tour in Japan - always arrive early. Everything leaves on time from tours to trains. For those who do suffer motion sickness - take medication. It does get quite windy up the hill towards the Onson etc. Thank You Gary for all your kindness and thank you to a brilliant driver. Cheers
Directions to meeting point incomplete and missed the trip. Directions not clear to meet at office 2 blocks away.
We are getting pretty experienced and taking one day tours in Japan. This was a good one. We had a great guide., Harry. He was knowledgeable, focused on making the tour a successful for all of us, his English was good and he was pretty well organised. Meiji Castle was impressive. The little spa village of Arima Onsen was interesting to visit and the views from Mt Rokko were vast and it was a clear day.
I'd go again, good organisation, comfortable bus, good value, wasn't rushed. Plenty of time at the places. I would have liked more local information about the places we went to.
Our guide, Harry, was what made the trip better than I expected. I was so looking forward to seeing Himeji Castle, and Harry didn’t disappoint. Harry is a history buff. He gave context to the castle, the occupants especially Hideyoshi, the invaders, and how it weathered through wars relatively unscathed. The lunch was good too!
The tour was well organized Our guide Gary was great. He was very knowledgeable and made the trip very amenable
I’m giving this a mixed review. First— the tour guide (named Taka) was great—he gets five stars. He was friendly, fun, informative—tops. The sites we visited also get five stars. The castle is beautiful. The onsen was relaxing. The scenery great. But the bus was very uncomfortable—old worn out seats that made your butt sore—because there is a lot of driving on this tour. Also the company that ran this did not advertise accurately how long this tour would take— it takes much longer than they said. This resulted in us missing our Shinkansen train that evening. And finally, I contacted the company before the tour to ask a question about Whether we could bring our luggage with us and they never responded. So the company needs some improvement in terms of their communications and their equipment. But the people on the ground are excellent.
This is a worthwhile trip, and Harry our guide was excellent. Himeji castle is breathtaking, not to be missed! The lunch (5 course) we added was very good and kept us going the rest of the afternoon. Stops in Arima and Mt Rokko were really enjoyable - we wouldn't have gone to Arima and had the panoramic sight of Osaka otherwise. While in Arima, do the onsen bath if you're up for it, it's truly invigorating. Arima is one Japan's most noted (and oldest?) onsen, (natural seawater makes it different from other hot springs) and a lovely town to walk as well. Recommend!
This tour was great. Gary was an excellent tour guide. He had a lot of knowldege and he made sure everyone in the tour knew where we had to go and the meeting points. Strongly recommended.
Harry, our tour guide was very kind and providing lots of information was knowledgeable and experienced and was fun and understanding and enjoyed himself as well as we all did.
The organizing of the trip requires some work. We arrived at the meeting point and it was chaotic. Which bus to take, when it will leave. Some of the bus tour operators in Tokyo can serve as a good example to streamline tours. Our tour guide, Gary, was great. He provided background knowledge about the Himeji Castle and Arima Onsen. He was friendly and respectful. Unfortunately, it was raining the whole day, so walking outside was more cumbersome. Anyway, Gary did a great job. The organized lunch was fantastic as well.
It is the nicest of the castles we visited, and the botanical park is excellent. Allow 4 or 5 hours to see it. If you lije bonsai, they have some fine and very old examples.
This was a nice, mostly self guided tour. There is A LOT of walking & stairs!! Make sure the people with you can maneuver many stairs & inclines. Beautiful gardens, great pictures.
