Our family of 4 did a 6 hour walking tour with Mico around Osaka. The experience was excellent. Mico collected us direct from our hotel and gave us a complete tour of Osaka, including a gastronomic adventure, full of stories behind the facade. We all had a wonderful day and we would highly recommend this experience to anyone visiting Osaka.

Itinerary
Dive straight into Osaka's vibrant youth culture at America Mura (or Amemura as we locals lovingly call it)! It's more than just a neighborhood; it's the heartbeat of urban fashion, street art, and hip-hop vibes. Here, we'll stop for a mouthwatering takoyaki tasting—because you can't truly know Osaka without savoring these sizzling bites!
Prepare yourself for the dazzling lights and endless food stalls of Dotonbori! Home to the iconic Glico Running Man sign, it's the ultimate selfie spot in Osaka. We'll navigate the mouthwatering chaos of street food—think takoyaki, kushikatsu, and so much more—as you soak in the dynamic atmosphere that embodies the city's motto, "Eat till you drop!"
Shinsaibashi isn't just another shopping street—it's the lively pulse of Osaka nightlife, buzzing with energy from dusk till dawn. As we stroll through, I'll reveal a hidden secret spot right in plain sight, a fascinating place that even locals often miss, adding a layer of intrigue to our journey.
Step into Hozenji Yokocho, a charming lantern-lit alleyway that feels untouched by time. Here, we'll dive into an authentic and uncensored look at Japan’s spiritual traditions, right next to the moss-covered Buddhist statue at Hozen-ji Temple. Feel the history beneath your feet on the cobblestone path, a quiet escape from the city’s modern buzz.
Kuromon Market, affectionately known as "Osaka's Kitchen," has been serving hungry locals and visitors for over 200 years. We'll head straight to my favorite okonomiyaki spot, where you'll taste the savory pancake that defines Osaka comfort food. It's a sensory feast of sights, smells, and flavors, capturing the true spirit of this culinary capital.
Enter DenDen Town, Osaka’s electrifying district for all things anime, gaming, and quirky gadgets! This buzzing otaku paradise is packed with colorful shops and energetic streets. Whether you're a tech enthusiast or just curious about Japan’s fascinating pop-culture scene, there’s always something intriguing here to captivate your imagination.
Tower Knives is a small knife shop near Tsutenkaku Tower that specializes in high-quality Japanese kitchen knives. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable, and you can often see a live demonstration of how the knives are used or sharpened. It’s a great place to learn about Japanese craftsmanship and what makes these knives special. Whether you’re into cooking or just curious, it’s an interesting and authentic local stop.
Wander through Shinsekai, a delightfully retro district that transports you back to vintage Osaka. Its vibrant neon-lit streets, nostalgic eateries, and the iconic Tsutenkaku Tower offer a glimpse into the city’s charming past. Here, every corner whispers stories of a bygone era waiting for you to explore.
If the group insist: Finally, experience Osaka’s raw authenticity in Nishinari, a neighborhood that locals refer to as the city's underworld. Here, you'll truly feel the pulse of real Osaka—edgy, genuine, and unapologetically itself. This is where stories come alive, offering a rare glimpse into the heart of the city that most tourists never see.
For Private tours only: Rising proudly above its massive stone walls, Osaka Castle once symbolized the ambition of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the man who nearly unified Japan. Built in 1583, it withstood wars, fires, and time, standing today as a testament to Japan’s samurai past. Walk its historic grounds, hear the echoes of battles fought, and take in breathtaking city views from the top.
For Private tours only: This small museum in central Osaka features original Japanese woodblock prints from the Edo period, known as ukiyo-e. One of the highlights is an authentic print of The Great Wave off Kanagawa by Hokusai — one of the most iconic images in Japanese art. You’ll also see prints of kabuki actors, daily life, and landscapes. It’s a quick, quiet stop that gives you a glimpse into traditional Japanese art and culture.
For Private tours only: Abeno Harukas is the tallest skyscraper in Japan, standing 300 meters high. It has an observation deck with panoramic views of Osaka — on a clear day, you can even see all the way to Kyoto and Nara. Inside, there’s also a department store, restaurants, a hotel, and an art museum. Whether you want to shop, relax, or just enjoy the view, it’s a nice mix of local life and city scenery in one place.
For Private tours only: This museum lets you step back in time and walk through life-size recreations of Osaka streets from the Edo period. You can see how people used to live, shop, and dress centuries ago. There are also seasonal decorations and occasional kimono rental options for photos.

Mico was meticulous about planning and helped us navigate priorities for our first trip. We also engaged him on two tours and it turned out to be better than we could have hoped for. We saw the tourist spots and also the locals and learned a lot about the cities. He was flexible in changing routes and was thoughtful about planning around the heat. We had a great time and will look for Mico on our next trip.
Outstanding Guide for Large, Diverse Groups in Kyoto & Osaka! We had an incredible time exploring Kyoto and Osaka with our guide Mico, and we cannot recommend him highly enough! We were a large group of 11 people, ranging from teenagers to adults. Managing a group of our size with different energy levels is no easy task, but Mico handled everything flawlessly with patience, warmth, and excellent organization. What impressed us most was how accommodating he was with our food preferences. Our group included strict vegetarians as well as passionate sushi lovers. Mico went above and beyond to find fantastic dining spots that made everyone happy, ensuring we all experienced authentic Japanese cuisine safely and deliciously. Thanks to his deep knowledge, navigating the busy sights of Kyoto and Osaka was smooth and stress-free. He brought the history and culture to life in a way that kept both the teens and adults fully engaged. If you are looking for a guide who is organized, knowledgeable, and highly adaptable, look no further! Thank you Mico for making our trip unforgettable!!
Mico was wonderful! He engaged our children and gave us a great tour of Osaka. We ate at local restaurants and he showed us an authentic side of Osaka! Highly recommend!
ABSOLUTELY BOOK Mico @ Yamamoto travel for a tour! You will not regret spending a day or two with him! We toured Kyoto and Osaka with him over two days. He started the days on time. He had a plan and provided guidance, but was also flexible with accommodating family needs. But most importantly, the thing that stood out to our family the most, was how easy he was to talk to. He could chat with my 9yo about her hobbies, then jump right into anime or pop culture with my teenagers, then have these important and deep conversations about societal differences and life and religion with my husband and I. We just loved getting to know him, and look forward to meeting him again one day. BOOK THIS TOUR.
My family of four, including 2 teen boys, had a unique experience in Nara and surrounds today. Our guide Mico was professional, warm, engaging, and knowledgeable. After hanging out with the deer in Nara and visiting the impressive Todai-ji temple, he took us on a lovely primeval forest hike to a waterfall where we ate lunch and relaxed in a beautiful natural setting without seeing a single other person! It was the perfect change of pace from the rest of our activities in Kyoto. I cannot recommend Mico enough! Guaranteed hit with your family.
Mico is friendly and warm, and his enthusiastic energy was a breath of fresh air. He was invaluable in guiding us through delicious food tours, and showing us the highlights that the city and local culture had to offer. Mico had already come highly recommended by close friends, and he did not disappoint!
We did a bike tour with Mico for a family of 5, with kids ages 16, 14, and 5. Mico was an amazing guide and we biked all over Osaka and saw and ate things we wouldn’t have otherwise. It was like hanging out with an old friend. Do not hesitate to book a tour with him. He is phenomenal.
So lucky to have Mico show me, my husband, and our 18 year old son around Kyoto and Osaka!! He provided invaluable advice and resources even while planning our trip, and we all enjoyed the intimate and extensive tours of both cities. He is incredibly personable, and his English and intellect is superb. Highly recommend!
Mico was our tour guide for our days in Kyoto and I specifically wanted to highlight his curated day trip to the mountains north of Kyoto. This included a world heritage UNESCO site village in Kayabuki na Sato with a great experience exploring a remote village and walking through some of the homes; Amanohashidate, bridge to heaven, a unique experience overlooking Sea of Japan with fishing and beach time; Ine fishing village with a boat tour. He’s super engaging, friendly, knowledgeable, makes it a fun experience for kids and adults alike and on city tour days, he took off-beaten, less crowded paths, interesting scenic hikes and made it a memorable time for the whole family! He was definitely our favorite guide of all we hired exploring various cities as we traveled through Japan. Recommend him wholeheartedly 100%!
Mico led us on an excellent tour of Osaka, hitting highlights all around the city. His fluent English, friendly attitude, and story telling abilities made the experience feel like meeting a local friend. Highly recommend!
Mico is very sophisticated yet down- to-earth, fluent English, shared so many cultural insights. very candid and kind, very insightful- highly recommend for families
Mico came highly recommended by several travel-savvy families, and now we completely understand why. Visiting Osaka for the first time with our family of four (including two young kids) felt overwhelming at first—the options for food, entertainment, and activities are endless. But with Mico guiding us, the experience became smooth, seamless, and genuinely enjoyable. He created a thoughtfully curated itinerary tailored to our family’s interests, and every food stop was outstanding—some of the best we’ve had anywhere in our travels. Mico kept a great energy throughout the full-day tour and did an amazing job keeping our kids engaged and entertained. Beyond the tour itself, he went above and beyond—helping us check into our accommodations, offering guidance on where to stay, covering food and snack costs during the tour, and making the subway system easy to navigate. He also gave fantastic recommendations for dinner and ideas for the following day, which turned out to be excellent. We wouldn’t hesitate to book Mico again on future trips to Osaka and Kyoto.
Mico took great care of us on our half-day Osaka tour. He showed us a great mix of popular as well as lesser known attractions that we definitely wouldn’t have experienced without him. He’s very knowledgeable about Osaka and Japanese history, which gave us great context in understanding our experience. Can’t wait to see him again on our next trip.
Mico took exceptional care of us and made our time in Japan truly memorable. He was incredibly flexible with our needs, deeply knowledgeable about Japanese culture, and helped us confidently navigate the train system with ease. What really set him apart was his ability to show us hidden gems and local spots we never would have found on our own. We covered an incredible amount in just half a day in Kyoto and Osaka, and it never felt rushed. Mico is kind-hearted, thoughtful, and passionate about what he does — truly a fantastic tour guide. I couldn’t recommend him more highly.
We had a great time exploring Osaka, hitting all the highlights going beyond the usual tourist spots. Mico introduced us to this wonderful city on our first full day in town. We learned so much about Osaka, and Japan in general. We discovered some hidden gems that a lot of tours usually leave out. We couldn’t have asked for a better way to get to know Osaka!
We had Mico give us a Tour of Kyoto! Mico is super friendly and knowledgeable! We covered a lot in a one day tour and learnt a lot! Very helpful!
My partner and I had an amazing time in Osaka thanks to the self guided itinerary that we got from Mico. I can’t wait to visit again and to recommend Yamamoto tours to friends!
My wife and I were visiting Japan for the first time across 3 cities for a 2 week stay. Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto. Needless to say we felt overwhelmed at the idea of planning everything ourselves and figuring out how to best optimizing our time there while still enjoying things at our pace. We hired Mico to plan out a self guided tour in all 3 cities for multiple days and he meticulously created a customized plan for us for each day that accounted for traveling to parts of the city, what to do in that region and what to eat while also providing instruction on how to get there. Mico takes his work seriously and I appreciate how professional he was during the entire experience. Also his English is A+. Felt like I was talking to an American so that was very very helpful in planning. Highly recommend Mico to meet you where you’re at in terms of what you are looking to get out of your trip. Thanks Mico!
I reached out to Mico before our trip to Japan and he was amazing from our first email. I feel like we are well seasoned travelers, but there is so much to do and see in Japan I just got a bit overwhelmed trying to plan it all on my own. We talked about what my options were and he crafted an itinerary that fit. We met with Mico in Osaka and Kyoto on different dates for walking tours of both cities. He took us to really cool shopping spots, to eat delicious local cuisine, and taught us about Japan’s culture as well. We visited temples and shrines and castles and Mico shared with us the history of each place along the way. On top of that we went to some places where we were the only tourists in sight and it really felt like we were seeing a part of Japan that no visitors get to experience. We had a third day planned with Mico and had to pivot because of inclement weather. He offered us the chance to get out of the city and into the mountains around Kyoto for a day trip that took us from the forrest to the seaside and it was something I never could have done without his help. His demeanor is laid back and friendly and he was a stark contrast to the huge group tours you see all over with mobs following around a local holding up an umbrella so no one gets lost. It truly felt like the time was ours. The flexibility and feeling of not being rushed around was just what we needed. On top of all that, Mico was available before we arrived in Japan to answer questions and make reservations at restaurants. He gave me his direct number and when we parted ways he let me know if I need anything during my stay I could reach out for help. He even crafted a self guided tour of Tokyo for us for the second leg of our holiday. I feel like we did not just get a great tour guide, we made a friend. Arigatogozaimasu Mico!
Joined a tour with Miko a few months ago and wow! I can't believe how amazing and deep the tour was. I thought it would just be a simple food walk, but it turned out to be something really special. Miko showed us cool local spots, told interesting stories, and made everything super easy to enjoy. The food was great and nothing felt rushed. It honestly felt like I was exploring the city with a local friend. Definitely recommend!! Would love to do it again next time I’m in Osaka. 😊
Had great experience with Yamato travel. Got so much funs trying lots of foods and drink spots in the downton. will recommend to everyone who visit Osaka to try explore with Him✨
Mico was amazing, we learnt so much about Japan, we booked again with him as well. I would highly recommend Mico for his service was 100 percent His knowledge was outstanding
My family spent 2 days with Mico during our recent trip to Japan- one in Kyoto and one in Osaka and it was a 5 star experience all the way. Mico spent time ahead of our trip to get to know our family and find out what our interests were, so that he could tailor two days of itinerary for us. We spent 8 hours together in Kyoto on an incredible walking tour that took in all the sites we wanted, plus some special surprises from Mico. We sampled the most delicious food in the Nishiki food market including tempura crab, wagyu, mochi, fish cakes and matcha sweets, along with saki. Throughout the day we stopped at quaint coffee shops, enjoyed temples and shrines, samurai shops, museums, and we finished the day with an epic walk up to Fushimi Inari for sunset. Nothing felt rushed and Mico shared the history of each attraction and experience. In Osaka, we jumped on electric bikes and with Mico leading us, we cycled to the Osaka castle, to museums and beautiful shrines and gardens where there was not another tourist. We ate more incredible foot at the market including yakitori, okonomiyaki, oysters and so much more. We can't recommend Mico enough. He was a well-informed, educational guide, who is also a lot of fun, with so much love and enthusiasm for Japan. He was open and generous with his time, recommending places for us to shop throughout the rest of our trip. Mico made our trip to Japan truly memorable, and for that we thank him.
If you’re looking for the best private tour guide in Kyoto or Osaka, we highly recommend Mico Yamamoto from Yamamoto Travel! We spent a few days exploring both cities with Mico, and it was honestly one of the highlights of our trip to Japan. He took us to all the must-see spots — famous temples, the 1000 Torii Gates, local food and flea markets — but also showed us hidden gems we never would’ve found on our own. Think peaceful backstreet shrines, off-the-radar markets, and authentic local neighborhoods that gave us a real taste of Japanese culture. Mico’s super knowledgeable and clearly passionate about what he does. He shared tons of cool stories, cultural insights, and history in a way that was easy to follow and super engaging. It really helped us connect with the places we were seeing, rather than just snapping photos and moving on. He’s also just a great person to spend time with — friendly, professional, and speaks perfect English, which made everything smooth and stress-free. If you want a fun, authentic, and insightful tour experience in Kyoto or Osaka, reach out to Mico Yamamoto. Can’t recommend him enough! Thanks again, Mico — you made our Japan trip unforgettable!
We had the incredible opportunity to have Mico Yamamoto from Yamamoto Travel as our guide during our trip to Osaka and Kyoto, and it was truly an unforgettable experience! Mico took us on an amazing journey through the most iconic temples, flea markets, food markets, and even all the way to the 1000 Gates Shrine. But what made the experience truly special was that he also introduced us to hidden gems that we would have never found on our own. From quiet, tucked-away shrines to local markets with authentic flavors, every stop felt unique and off the beaten path. His deep knowledge and engaging storytelling gave us not only historical facts but also a profound insight into Japanese traditions and culture. He explained the symbolism, rituals, and customs behind what we were seeing, making us appreciate the experience on a much deeper level. Beyond being an excellent guide, Mico is also a wonderful person—friendly, sociable, and extremely professional. He speaks excellent English, which made communication smooth and enjoyable throughout the tour. Thanks to him, we were able to experience an authentic and immersive exploration of these beautiful cities. If you’re looking for a top-notch guide in Osaka or Kyoto, look no further—Mico Yamamoto is the best choice. We wholeheartedly recommend him! Thank you again, Mico, for an unforgettable experience!
