We had the best experience in Osaka because we had a fantastic tour guide. Hugo was very knowledgeable and extremely friendly. Hugo is from Paris but has lived in Osaka for the past 11 years. His English is excellent and his tour suggestions were amazing. If we hadn’t been a bit exhausted from our travels we would have happily increased our planned tour from 4 to 6 hours. We were skeptical about using tours outside of our Ritz Carlton cruise ship selected tours but we decided to try Viator in addition to some Ritz tours as we wanted tours in the 4 hour range instead of large group tours that were longer and much more expensive. Turns out we made a great decision with Viator and our guide Hugo. We have 2 more tours planned with Viator and are definitely looking forward to them. There’s no question if Hugo lived near us we would definitely want to be friends. He was fantastic!!

Itinerary
We will start going to Osaka castle, as the park surrounding the castle is huge and can be tiring to walk, please note that it is possible to take a shuttle to go directly to the castle (there is usually no shuttle service the first Thursday of every month). You will learn more about the rich history of Osaka Castle, intimately linked to the history of Japan. If and only you wish, we will go inside the castle which serves as a museum on the history of Hideyoshi Toyotomi, a man who changed the destiny of Japan.
We will discover the Dotombori district and the famous "running man" in the entertainment district. You will discover in detail what this place has to offer so you won't miss anything from your Osaka experience.
The Shin Sekai district, a very unique working-class district in terms of its history and architecture, will no longer hold any secrets for you. If and only you wish, we can stop to taste some of the local specialities (no English menu guarantee!) and eat some food where the locals go.
Your guide will make himself a pleasure to explain you what you can see in this atypical street food market. From local specialities to fugu (poisonous fish) and shellfish stalls, this visit is sure to whet your appetite. As this is a personalized tour, you will be able to stop to eat some japanese specialities according to the recommendations of your guide.
An American district in Osaka? Let's explore together this trendy neighborhood very popular with local youth. We will go the "triangle park" a constantly lively place where people like to meet. We will stroll this contrasting district between modernity and discreet sanctuaries.

Hugo was an excellent guide from the start with great communication of meeting up, and asking our preferences of what to see beforehand to prepare a bespoke tour for us. On the day he was friendly, knowledgeable and interesting, giving us a clear idea of how the Japanese culture works and helping imus experience all the unique dishes and places of Osaka. Whilst flexible, he also suggested some ‘must sees’ which were definitely worth it. Thank you Hugo for the best tour we have had since the start of our trip. 👏👏👏👏
At first we had no plans in Osaka but fortunately we changed our minds and our tour with Hugo as our guide made the visit so worth while. He gave us tons of useful information as we went about our first visit to Japan. He was able to answer any questions we had ( and we had lots) and went above and beyond to give us an amazing experience within the 4hr tour (plus 30mins) that we will never forget… thank you Hugo!
We had a great day with Hugo! Transportation was a breeze as we just followed along, and he was able to guide us to additional spots that fit our interests like Super Potato.
Francisca our guide was a lovely person who wad very knowledgeable of Japanese history and culture she guided us through the 5 hour tour at our pace visiting all the places on the itinerary We loved the castle the visit to the Doronbori area the markets and she arranged for us to do a ride on the canal after our tour had finished
We had a great time with Hugo. He answered all our questions and we enjoyed the subway rides and particularly enjoyed the Japanese pancakes for lunch
Our Osaka guide was HUGO. He was excellent: very knowledgeable, kind, patient. Definitely a wonderful experience!
We had a great tour with Antione. He was very knowledgeable and friendly. He showed us so much in the time we had with him and we found ourselves in places that we would never have been able to navigate on our own. Highly recommend!
Hugo is a great guide fits in around what you want to see and adjusts the pace to suit the clients. We learned so much about traditions and culture . Only wish we could have him asa guide every day highly recommend
Ami was an amazing tour guide. She was super knowledgeable, kind and engaging. She catered to our varied interests and was always excited.
We had a great day with Armand…he met us at the cruise port on foot and off we went. There is a lot of walking on this tour, it was too much for some of the people we were traveling with, however, my husband and I enjoyed all the sites and felt we received a great overview of Osaka. Armand helped us navigate the subway system and made sure we were on the correct train to return us to the port. Great day!
Wonderful tour of Osaka. Kalid was the best guide. He took us to so many amazing places like tallest building, food market, kitchen market, Osaka castle and more. We learned a lot about the city and having a private guide was the best!!!
Khalid was an amazing tour guide in Osaka and made our first day in Japan such a great experience. We arrived by cruise ship at our first port, and it took much longer than expected to get off the ship and begin our tour. Khalid had no problem waiting for us and was very understanding. He adjusted the itinerary so we could still fit in a great day while making sure we were back in time before the cruise departed. I was able to make specific requests for things we wanted to see and do, but since it was our first time in Japan, I mostly left it up to him. He did a great job putting together a fun and memorable day, and it felt like we were able to experience Osaka without having to worry about the logistics. Khalid was also incredibly helpful when I wanted to buy custom Japanese knives. He knew exactly where to go and helped point me in the right direction, which made the experience even better. We had a great time and would definitely meet up with Khalid again on our next trip back to Japan. I highly recommend him to anyone looking for a knowledgeable, flexible, and friendly guide in Osaka!
We really enjoyed our walking tour with Antoine, though we definitely felt it the next day from all the steps! If you book this tour, be prepared for a good amount of walking. Antoine shared the history throughout our time together and did an excellent job answering all of our questions. It was also great getting to use the subway system—Osaka’s is especially efficient and easy to navigate. In just five hours, we were able to see so much, and we truly appreciated his time and expertise. I’d highly recommend this tour—just be ready to get plenty of steps in!
We had an amazing tour in Osaka with Hugo! He covered so many great places in a short time and made the whole experience smooth and enjoyable. Hugo is incredibly knowledgeable, friendly, and patient, and he shared so many interesting stories and insights along the way. We truly appreciated his professionalism and warm personality. Highly recommend Hugo to anyone visiting Osaka—he makes the city come alive!
Our guide, Hugo, was a champ - knowledgeable, courteous, flexible, and understanding our needs. He not only took us to the sites we wanted to see, but also filled us in on many unique aspects of Osaka.
Read the description wrong and didn’t realize this was a walking tour. However, our guide Hugo was great and we were able to see highlights of Osaka, including the castle and various entertainment districts. Our guide made it as easy as possible for the folks in our group that needed more time for the walk etc. He even recommended a fantastic place for dinner. Would do it again if everyone in our group was ok with walking :)
My husband and I were able to take a 6 hour walking tour of Osaka with Calum. The tour started out with a trip to Osaka Castle. Calum was lovely and was willing to customize our experience by taking us Shinseki then onto Dotoburi! We highly recommend this tour and felt like we found spots in Osaka we would have never seen without a personal guide.
During our most recent Celebrity Cruise on May 16,2025 through Japan, one of the highlights was our stop in Osaka, a city renowned for its vibrant culture and countless attractions. Wanting an authentic and personalized experience, we chose to book a private guide rather than joining a large cruise excursion, and it was the best decision we could have made. Through Viator, we connected with Hugo, a fantastic guide who took us on an unforgettable journey through Osaka’s historic and local gems. He led us to the iconic Osaka Castle, shared fascinating historical insights, introduced us to hidden local eateries( so good), well Known places to visit famous Dotombori, Shinsekai The retro charm destination, with its colorful signs and bustling streets, created a unique atmosphere. Sampling delicious food hidden spots that only our guide took us to which we indulged ourselves!hands down the best local eatery was one of the many highlights, as well as the iconic Tsutenkaku Tower adds to the character of the area. Truly one of a kind experience. We also visited “ Ame-mura” also known as American village /District(really hip area) and did so much more …he gave us an insider’s view of the city’s daily life. Hugo’s warmth, patience, and deep knowledge made our day exceptional—even extending our tour well into the evening hours not expected at all...ending it at a lively karaoke bar!! So much fun!! In the beginning of our journey He provided us train tickets and helped us navigate the city’s efficient train system, and when time was short, we organized taxi rides so we could make the most of our limited hours to head back n the ship before our 3am departure. Though we wished we had another day to explore nearby Kyoto with him, our time in Osaka was truly special. I wholeheartedly recommend Hugo for anyone seeking an immersive, memorable experience in Japan—he exceeded our expectations in every way, and we can’t wait to return and explore even more with him as our guide and now a new friend in Osaka! Arigato! Enjoy the “real” unforgettable experience thank you so very much Hugo we will definitely plan to return soon and spend few more days in Osaka! Thank you again Sagina &Joey
What a wonderful way to see Osaka. Hugo was an exceptional guide. He picked us up at the port and the time with him was great. Very knowledgeable of the city. Never a boring moment. Very professional and personable. Highly recommended!
Hugo was an absolute Gun tour guide. He worked out within about 5 min what kind of things we would like to see on the night tour (some of the more underground, less Main Street stuff) and quickly worked out an itinerary that showed us all the less well known parts of Osaka. He was awesome to hang out with too, brilliant with languages and was able to show us a few places we would never have found on our own. 10/10, highly recommend.
One to one experience, meeting on time and guide easy to find. Had to pay extra for train fare unexpectedly
It was a pleasure to meet Hugo for a short tour of Osaka. As a resident of Japan it was particularly interesting to hear his experiences and views on life with his family in Osaka. Thank you !
Great walking tour of Osaka with our guide Arnaud. If you are looking for a great tour of Osaka this is the one. We traveled by subway and foot to the Osaka Castle, Osaka Market and all the popular areas including Dontobori Street. Arnaud was very accommodating and geared the tour to our wishes. He also helped communicating in the knife store when we purchased a carving knife. Don’t hesitate to book this tour.
Hugo was amazing. Great communication beforhe tour, he contacted us to letvis know where to meet. He was right on time, very knowledgeable, did everything at our own pace and he was flexible with the itinerary. He lnew all the local places and recommended where to get lunch.
Amazing tour !!! We had a great tour with Hugo and it was our best tour all around japan We highly recommend this tour and had the best experience Thank you again and we will see you soon !
We highly recommend this tour and especially the guide, Hugo! It is a great option for cruise ship passengers who only have a day in Osaka but who want to see the most of what the city has to offer. Hugo met us at the cruise terminal rather than us having to find someplace in the city to meet him, which was very convenient. He took us to many sights, focusing on what we wanted to see while at the same time making sure we knew about the multiple sights of the city and the stories behind them. His English was very good, and he also speaks French and Japanese (maybe more) fluently so he was very easy to understand. We were keen on seeing the castle, which we did, as well as other key areas of the city. Hugo made sure we saw it all. One thing that was extra special was when Hugo took us to very local, very Japanese little restaurants where we were the only foreigners. One was so small it didn't have a place to sit, you ate at the counter - it was very good and a very local experience. We had a wonderful day and we highly recommend this tour!!
An incredible experience! I've been in Japan for a while, but I realized how much I didn't truly know about it. Thanks to this amazing team, I was able to rediscover the beauty and depth of what was right in front of me. The experience was both immersive and Eye Opening an unforgettable journey that left a lasting impression!
It was fantastic! Hugo is the best guide I have ever met. He took us to the most exotic places in Osaka. It’s essential to have good eyes—no wonder his company is called Local Eyes! One day there may feel like a week if you truly take it all in.
We absolutely enjoyed this tour experience!! It was our first time in Osaka and we had only one afternoon to spend there but we felt like we knew the city after we went back to the port. Our guide was really flexible and adapted the tour according to our wishes, which was extremely important for us. We wanted a private tour as we are not big fans of large groups and especially wanted a tour where we could take our time without rushing constantly. We learned a lot about the city of Osaka, things that we would be able to learn only talking with someone living there for years. We definitely recommend this tour which was one of the best stop we had in Japan!
Great tour , We Saw a lot and the service was great . Espacialy the little restaurant in one of the side street. loved the recommandations.
Hugo is a fantastic tour guide. He has a great personality and knows Kyoto and Osaka very well. Before we left for our cruise we booked Hugo for a private tour for 2 days in Kyoto and Osaka. He met us at the Osaka pier and we took off and had 2 wonderful days. We saw everything we wanted to see plus more. Kyoto, Osaka and Hugo were a highlight of our 18 day trip to Japan.
Hugo was waiting for us as soon as we arrived at the port, he was friendly and polite. He asked us if there was anything in particular we wanted to do/see but we let Hugo lead the way, the tour was excellent, taking the train, seeing the castle, fish market, mini America, temple, lovely wee back streets. Greet to meet you and share a couple of beers, & making sure we got back on the right train haha Thank you Hugo
Our experience with guide Hugo was particularly positive. He was present at the agreed pick-up location on time, so the day could start smoothly. The tour was completely private and used public transport (subway), which gave the whole thing an authentic character and at the same time was efficient to reach the sights. Hugo gave clear explanations of both the customs and peculiarities of Japan and the customs of the inhabitants. His knowledge was remarkably large and extensive. Hugo spoke very good English, which made communication particularly pleasant. A highlight was the typical Japanese lunch at a restaurant where many locals also ate – a unique experience that added authenticity. Finally, Hugo brought us safely and timely back to the cruise ship, allowing us to return with peace of mind.
Tour fully met our expectations, varied, fully organized according to our wishes, Hugo also gave one or the other insidertip.
It was an exciting trip with so many great impressions, stories and tips from our tour guide Hugo. Highly recommended as he has inquired about the wishes beforehand. We were first at Osaka Castle, then conquered the streets of the American Village and then went to Dotonbori. We had told him we were into cars, so he showed us some cool car spots! We saw exactly what we wanted! Strong!
We spent an absolutely amazing evening in Osaka. Hugo our guide adapted extremely well to our group. The highlight was really to personalize the tour, we wanted to see the most unusual places in the city but we also wanted to taste local food and keep the freedom to stop where we wanted. Thanks again to Hugo for his kindness and professionalism that made this visit memorable!
If you aspire to a total and authentic immersion in the vibrant city of Osaka, enlisting Hugo’s services is a must. His expertise and passion for Japanese culture turn a simple visit into an adventure After a briefing class, questions to refine our expectations, Hugo made us discover Osaka as if we were with a friend. Castle , history and anecdotes of the city, traditions, culinary discoveries, parks,.... We also took advantage of this moment to ask him for gift tips, we were even able to chin a little. In short, we had a pleasant time, and left with lots of memories. If you really want to discover a city I recommend you to go through Hugo.
Osaka modern and traditional city. Its castle is splendid view from the roof top Blues birds (entrance near the castle) . The kuromon market where you can eat. . The city is a great carnival day and night. A big thank you to Hugo our guide who took us to see all these places and unlikely galleries off the beaten track and discover the best okonomiyakis. I dream of going back. Merci Hugo.
Excellent guided tour, very complete and entertaining. We took very good advantage of the hours we had available from the cruise. I recommend it 100%
