Take a private tour if possible - the site and museum are rich in history, archaeology, and culture and more time is needed than available through the cruise ship tour. As you walk through the site, your appreciation for the ancient history grows. When you enter the ancient stadium, you can feel the excitement of others. The museum is filled with ancient treasures and you are kind of rushed through with a tour so miss absorbing some of the culture and sites. Very much worth a visit if you can only go on an arranged tour but I think it would be better experienced on a private tour.
We visited from a cruise ship. It was very easy to take the public bus from the port to the site. It did get a little touchy on the way back as a lot of people were trying to get on the 4pm return bus. It is $8 euro round trip so well worth it. The site is pretty amazing they are working to restore some of the ruins, this was an opportunity to see it. I did feel overrun by tour groups in the museum, they were basically wall to wall so it would be nice to have a few less tour groups in the museum at once.
Standing in the actual stadium where athletes competed over 2,700 years ago, walking through the ruins of the Temple of Zeus, seeing where the Olympic flame is still lit today — it connects you to something much larger than yourself.
I strongly advise to never use Viator if you are coming from a cruise ship or unless your local and know you will for sure make it to port for the exact date and time. Our cruise ship had to swap port dates due to a tug boat operator strike which we were told is a monthly occurrence by a local. Viator would not change the ticket date even though they were contacted 4 days prior. Ticket was no date change non refundable. When we went into town we were told that there was no reason they should not have been able to change the date for the ticket so we lost a total of $300 in tickets for the 2 ports that were swapped. No refund NOTHING. No trying to help just it is what it is attitude when I called. Will never use Viator again. Had I just booked it through the cruiseline our tickets would have been date switched as all those people and even other excursion companies helped their customers and they were able to see the sites.
Exceeded all our expectations! The site was within walking distance of our hotel. The ruins and grounds beautiful maintained an lots of shade. The temple of Zeus was fantastic , there were many beautiful views of the ruins including signs in English and Greek describing them. The stadium where the Olympic games were held was marvelous with hills surrounding it with seating for thousands, We spent several hours there and still did not see it all, Well worth the Trip. Go early as it did get quite crowded as the morning wore on. The museum had many fine items all lot of them complete. Sculptures artifacts you name it was there, On a trip filled with wonders this was by far our favorite place,
This was a nice experience and very interesting to learn about the history of the area. Give yourself ample time to walk around both spaces and be sure to protect yourself from the sun because there is not much shade outside. The museum is a nice excape from the heat and had beautiful artifacts to explore.
Visiting Ancient Olympia was like stepping back in time. The museum is packed with amazing artifacts. Everything is well laid out and easy to follow, with good signs and helpful info in English. The archaeological site itself is massive and really impressive. Walking through the ruins of the Temple of Zeus and standing on the original Olympic track was surreal. It’s mostly outdoors, so bring water and wear good shoes especially in summer. Overall, it’s a fascinating and memorable place. Whether you’re into history or just curious, it’s totally worth the trip. Purchasing the tickets via Viator made it one step easier.
It is an awesome place to visit. Paths are very easy to explore and have lots of people in the area to make sure tourists are not touching or climbing in the ruins. The museum was beautiful
Excellent site and museum. Enjoy much more than the Vatican. Beware when they scan your ticket to enter museum, it then shows used and you can’t get into archaeological site unless you go to ticket booth and stab in line to get a hand ticket after much wasted time.
We went very early. We were in the first group to enter and were able to avoid heavy crowds. Our tickets were purchased before arriving there. The site is breathtaking but is a moderate to heavy walking activity. The heat was a killer. Literally you are wringing wet when done. You must wear sunscreen, light clothing, a hat, and drink tons of water.
Olympus is great but these tickets are not good value. We paid more for the tickets than you would on the door. Plus they included an extra charge for an audio guide but there aren’t any at any of the site.
Used Grekaland tours they Viator, very confusing at port, had to walk a distance to find them, then further to the bus. Our guide was ok, older woman was very nice but she seemed to be struggling with all the climbing and walking. She needs a better way to ID her than the pink umbrella bc a few people had them. Seeing the ruins was awesome, my group was less than enthused at the amount of information given. I love using aviator to book tours but not necessarily this one.
It was easy to purchase tickets. We had a great time seeing the ruins and the museum! It was amazing!
User friendly website. The only issue we had was the weak internet connection in Olympia Greece, but it all worked out. Next time I will download the tickets in advance.
When we arrived there was a long line of people to buy tickets. The company that provided transportation for us to the site said that there was a senior citizen discount. When I finally got to the front of the line I said two adults and one senior citizen (76). She told me that only European citizens were eligible for the discount. I am not sure I understand that. Why are the elderly from other countries not treated the same. The site is nice. There is signage that tells you about some of the items. I saw no tour guides for hire.
I thought it was amazing - to walk through the ruins and connect with the history. I would recommend the archeological site first then the museum but either way is great!
The museum and the actual site are amazing but I did not think the app worked that well which was a shame as it would have helped to explain what we were seeing. We were also told there was no audio tours available to book which would have helped.
Be careful not to buy the wrong tickets! We thought this was a place in Athens and turns out it is 2 hours away!
There are no ticket machines at this site so you will not skip the line. When at the ticket office it took 3 members of staff to try and process the tickets. They couldn’t so we had to buy new tickets to get in. So all in all it took longer to get in and more hassle to get a refund Tickets are cheaper at the gate anyway
Saved a lot of money. Took a bus ride and bought this ticket saved a ton from what we would have paid from cruise prices
An amazingly full museum, with the most incredible layout. Life-size statues from the Temple of Zeus Facades are placed in the main room and is an amazing view of how it would have been at the time. Numerous bronze artifacts start the museum. Significant sculptures (Nike of Paenios; Hermes by Praxiteles; Nymphaeum) are beautifully lit and allow you to circumnavigate them to see all sides. The archeological site is outside, while the museum of the Olympics is also nearby and worth the visit.
There are signs that explain very well what the houses were built for, also available via mobile app as a digital guide, but it takes a lot of time to listen to everything, 1 guide approx. 5 min. Many "stones" that you don't really know what to do with... columns, although the Temple of Zeus and the bathhouses, training grounds are quite cool. There are free restrooms. Adults up to 25 years old are free of charge. The museum is worth stopping by - the statues alone are worth it! And it is also free with the ticket purchased beforehand. The two of us (he under 25, I over 25 years old) paid 20 euros on site.
It is a mistake to assume that the significance of this landmark, which is listed in the UNESCO honours list, is limited only to the theme of sport. The birthplace of the Olympic Games still hosts events related to it. But for the Hellenes, since the earliest, at least since Mycenaean times, Olympia has been primarily a holy, religious pole. When visiting, you should keep this fact in mind, even if you are just coming to run through the most Olympic of all Olympic stadiums. How to communicate with the Higher Powers? What is the right way to praise God? The ancient Hellenes came up with many ways to do this, weaving their own culture. For example, praying with athletic agony. Hercules and Pelops founded competitions were born in Olympia in mythical times, and now the entire planet honors itself as their heirs. Centuries and millennia pass by. Myths turn into reality, becoming religion. And we can touch that mystique on a pilgrimage to such a significant place of strength. Your Socrates by Greece
One of the most exciting archaeological sites I have ever visited. The experience is fascinating and causes indescribable sensations. Not to be missed...
It's a bit disappointing. There are no really old buildings to see there. There are a few columns still standing. And there are tons of old stones lying there that suggest old buildings. But it looks like the buildings collapsed after the two earthquakes and the stones were left lying there. It's not so tragic if you haven't been there. The Greeks have much more beautiful and interesting places of worship to offer.
Olympia town built on the ancient walls... from where the first Olympic Games started from which they take their name. Glad and grateful to have treaded on lands so rich in history. Local guide prepared and competent.
Nice site to visit in the early morning to avoid heat and crowds! The auxiliary museums are air conditioned very fortunately!
Grande sito archeologico, bellissimo e ben organizzato. Un tuffo nella storia. Molto belle le ricostruzioni e l’app
