A really great tour. Alejandra was a knowledgeable and friendly guide who took us round a range of street food outlets, explaining both the food and the history of the stalls. In between she also gave us a lot of information about the city itself. Best to turn up hungry, as you get a lot of food. The information we were given about the start point was confusing; the correct meet was on Av. Morales at the back of Mercado del Merced. Highly recommended

Itinerary
Our Oaxaca food tour offers guests a culinary experience around the city's medina. It's a carefully curated food adventure, led by our team of Oaxaca tastemakers. Before we get started, our tour reflects the local cuisine, and the limitations of street food vendors and local eateries mean we cannot cater for every dietary restriction. Here's an honest appraisal for the tour, so no-one is disappointed: ✘ Unsuitable for vegetarian, vegan and pescatarian as the number of tastings would be very limited. ✔ Gluten intolerance, lactose intolerance, mild nut allergies, no pork diets and no seafood diets are possible, though some tastings do not have alternatives available If you are feeling adventurous for a foodie journey, read on!
This lunchtime food tour explores Oaxaca at its most vibrant, when markets and street carts are at their best. Known as Mexico’s culinary capital, the food culture is best experienced through its local dishes, prepared at market stalls and long-standing neighbourhood spots. With 15+ tastings, the tour offers a crash course into the essential flavours of Oaxaca. The experience begins with traditional favourites such as frothy chocolate de agua and a warm memela topped with pork crackling, followed by entomatadas and the ancient tejate. You’ll sample classic Oaxacan dishes, tamal de mole, quesillo cheese, and tender taco de cabeza. Further highlights include empanadas de mole amarillo, bold tostadas de chileajo, and tortas de cecina seasoned with local spices. The tour finishes with traditional sweets like crisp gaznate filled with meringue. This guided lunchtime walk provides an authentic and flavour-packed way to experience Oaxaca’s food culture beyond the main tourist routes.
The tour concludes after 3.5-4 hours in Mercado Benito Juárez . You'll leave not only full, but with a much deeper understanding of Oaxacan food culture and the confidence to continue eating your way through Mexico.

Alejandra was great, very knowledgeable wverything related to the tour and everything regarding Mexico. She was kind and nice to us through the whole trip. The food was great and we really felt like we went to the must authentic places that Oaxaca can offer
The variety and quality of our tastings were outstanding. Alejandra was both knowledgeable and entertaining. The tour was well paced. We did return to a couple of the street vendors later in our visit.
Guide was friendly and took us around to new locations I hadn't been to which was great. Only 4/5 because most of the food tried wasn't that good. I appreciate trying new things but places I ate on my own were much better.
Amazing tour, Alejandra was a fantastic guide. She showed us some true hidden gems and showed us how locals really eat. Not only that but she gave us history and provided us context with each stop we made. She also provided us with some great recommendations of things to do and see after the tour was over.
We really enjoyed this food tour! It gave us a good introduction to the foods of Oaxaca. Our guide Alejandra was great! We tried so many foods and by the end of the tour we were stuffed. The best part is that we found some really great places to eat where the locals eat for a great price that we have already gone back to. 😊 Highly recommend this fun and informative tour!
We had an amazing tour with Alejandra. She was very informative and took us to a lot of local spots. We learned a lot from her and she brought water bottles for all of us. She also provided recommendations for food and beverages for the rest of our stay. I would gladly take another tour from her.
Lots of walking through Mercados and you’ll eat some street food. You’ll be surprised by the different types of mole.
I really enjoyed the food tour! I got to try a lot of authentic Oaxacan foods and drinks that I had seen around Oaxaca but didn’t know where the best places to find them were. I discovered several new favorite foods and drinks that I’ll definitely be having again. I thought it was a great value, and the tour was both delicious and educational.
The depth of knowledge provided by our guide provided so much valuable context to the food we were eating.
************ Dora, Kia ora (may you be well/in good health). Mel and I thoroughly enjoyed all the tastings in Oaxaca today. Both the drinks and the food were truly authentic and delicious. And, above all, the fantastic stories about preparation, extraction, and production stood out, as well as the central role of family, gastronomy, culture, and politics, both locally and regionally. History and customs added great depth to the experience you offered us; it was truly enriching and unforgettable. We also appreciate the recommendations for supporting local artisans. We will leave you a very positive review—a 5-Michelin-star review! I hope Google Translate helps me express our gratitude! Nga mihi nui David and Melanee
Must see experience to learn about local food and culture. Ask for Dora, she was very knowledgeable and friendly.
This is an excellent tour that I would thoroughly recommend. I am so glad I picked it! Come hungry, as you certainly get to try some marvelous food across the city. Alejandra was a marvelous guide—she was knowledgeable, extremely friendly, and took the time to explain the significance of the different dishes. It all felt like excellent value for money. We tried food we wouldn't have found otherwise and learned so much about the city. Thank you, Alejandra, you were amazing!
This was an amazing tour! We loved getting to try more local spots that we wouldn’t have known about otherwise and learning about the rich history of food in Oaxaca from Ale and Dora, who were incredibly knowledgeable. The tortas stop was our favorite!! The amount of food was also thankfully manageable if you’re a good eater.
Fantastic tour. My partner and I were lucky to be the only 2 people on the tour so had hosts Dora and Ali(?) to ourselves. They were both were super friendly and knowledgeable and gave us a great introduction to Oaxacan cuisine, enabling us to really eat like locals and visit places we would otherwise have missed, especially market and street food stalls. Absolutely delicious and highly recommended.
Hands down the best food tour in Oaxaca. I was lucky to be the only one that booked for the day, so I got a personalised experience! I don't know where to start - every part of the tour was excellently thought out, from explaining the methods of cooking to the history of the dish (Oaxaca has a very rich history which is reflected through their food!). The guides were so friendly and hard working, making sure all my questions were answered. They ensured I always had water, and anytime I had to go to the bathroom they'd point me to the right direction. The variety of food was extremely good for the price paid, it wasn't just bites, it was full on street food portions. We went to a market that is more popular with locals than tourists, then even a small mezcal tasting which taught me more than the standard tours that go to the mezcalerias as a day trip. If I could rate this more than 5 stars, I would. Honestly what made it so special were the guides. Thank you for teaching me things about your culture!
We had an awesome time on this tour with Dora. She was very nice, polite, and informative. The food she took us to was delicious, and we got to try things we wouldn’t have ordered on our own. Highly recommend if you’re visiting Oaxaca, especially for the first time!
Such a great food tour in Oaxaca. Everything was super well organised and there was *so much* food, we were completely full by the end. Our guide, Dora, was amazing, really knowledgeable, friendly, and made every stop more interesting with her insights. Definitely one of the best ways to understand the local food scene and history
Dora was very friendly host. She was patient to explain many things and answer all questions very enthusiastically. She provided us a very deep experience of the Oaxaca cuisine! Definitely recommend taking this tour!
Dora was amazing, we tried some fantastic local cuisine. She shared some history about Oaxaca and their traditions. Id 100% recommend this tour!
It was a great tour. We got a little bit of all the different types of foods that Oaxaca has to offer. I would definitely recommend this tour to anyone visiting the area
Dora our guide today was very knowledgeable and led us through 3 hours of tastings, explainations and visits to places we would never have tried without her guidance. Delightful food tour!
This was a wonderful experience. Not just the food which was amazing but food that was totally unfamiliar to us. It was nice to hear the stories of the families running these street and market stands. Dora helped put these foods into a local Oaxaca context.
Dora and the food tour was amazing. It was well organised and well thought out. We tried so many delicious foods we would not have found on our own. It was fun, tasty, and we learnt a lot also. Great value for money.
Dora was really fun and knowledgable. We went to two markets, a bakery, and stopped at 2-3 food trucks. It was a delightful experience. The first market is just local and it’s where Dora grew up going with her family. This tour is special in that it is truly authentic vs tourist authentic. I was traveling solo and felt very very comfy cozy and safe. There was only one desert I did not like so much. It was for sure the highlight of my trip! Dora even helped me do a little shopping for chocolate, chilis and a straw bag. Sign up! It’s a great way to see the city and experience local life off the tourist path. 🌞🙌🥘💃 Erin from Oregon
Amazing way to see the city and eat very authentic traditional food of the locals. We went to two markets, a bakery, and street food! I even tried a baby cricket. Dora was my guide and I absolutely loved her. We laughed and had so much fun. I can’t wait to do it again.
The food tour exceeded every expectation. It was a wonder of cultural and artistic significance. Dora and Rogelio our tour guides were highly knowledgeable sharing history, culture and stories. The restaurants and food stands we went to were numerous, delicious and varied. The night was magical. We started as strangers and left as friends. Highly recommended.
New to Oaxaca or seasoned veteran, you will enjoy this “tasty” tour. The traditional foods and beverages of the region are represented in a well executed, walking tour. Oaxaca is famous for its food and drink and you will experience chocolate, molé, breads, tacos, empanadas , Mezcal and more! Traditional preparation and multigenerational offerings make this tour an authentic journey through the culinary delights of this magical city. Our guides, Dora and Pepé, were Oaxaca natives that filled the day with local knowledge of the sights and sounds, and childhood memories of the food and the places we visited. From markets to street vendors, this tour has everything you would want in a taste of the city.
This was a fantastic tour! Our guide Dora was extremely knowledgeable—not just about all the ingredients in everything we tried, but about the cultural and historical significance of each of the traditional foods. I live here in Oaxaca, and I have had a LOT of good food, but we went to so many places I hadn’t tried and now plan to frequent. I even liked the cabeza (cow’s head) tacos! But if that’s not your jam, you certainly won’t go hungry. I highly recommend this tour to any travelers or residents who want to get a real feel for Oaxacan food.
