Diego is fantastic! He is very knowledgeable. I learned so much about the history of Oaxaca from thousands of years ago to the present, the different indigenous groups and their customs, art, politics, etc. It was a very enriching experience. He was one of the best guides I have ever had and I have had many.
Wonderful 3 hour walk through Oaxaca City. Highly recommended as soon as you arrive so you get a better sense of the city. Oscar, our tour guide was easy going, very informative and made us feel at ease and never rushed. I would do it again.
We took Diego’s walking tour on our very first day in Oaxaca, running on little sleep after an early flight, and it ended up being the perfect introduction to the city. Starting in the Zócalo, where a large teachers’ protest was taking place, Diego did an excellent job explaining not only the history of Oaxaca but also the different perspectives surrounding the protest. Rather than offering a one-sided narrative, he thoughtfully explained both the benefits and challenges of the movement, helping us better understand the city, its people, and its politics. From there, we explored many of Oaxaca’s most iconic sites, including the Cathedral, Teatro Macedonio Alcalá, Andador de Macedonio Alcalá, Centro Cultural San Pablo, Iglesia del Carmen Alto, Mercado Benito Juárez, and Mercado 20 de Noviembre. Navigating the city center and the maze of protest tents would have been intimidating on our own, but Diego guided us through it with ease. One of the highlights was learning about Oaxaca's vibrant street culture. Diego explained the meaning behind the murals, protest posters, stickers, and graffiti that cover many of the city's walls. What initially looked like random street art became a fascinating window into Oaxaca's history, social movements, and community identity. The markets were another standout. Diego introduced us to local vendors, explained the significance of many regional foods and products, and even helped us order fresh juice and a traditional Oaxacan breakfast when we were absolutely starving from our flight. That small gesture made us feel less like tourists and more like welcomed guests. To top it all off, we finished at a fantastic local coffee shop, the perfect ending to a morning packed with history, culture, food, and local insight. By the end of the tour, we felt oriented, informed, caffeinated, and genuinely connected to Oaxaca. If you're visiting the city, especially for the first time, I can't imagine a better way to begin your trip than spending a few hours exploring it with Diego.
Oscar was a terrific guide and Oaxaca would not have been the same without him. Very knowledgeable and willing to do anything to accommodate our tour
I had an absolutely incredible experience on my walking tour of Oaxaca with Diego. He was deeply knowledgeable and so incredible to spend time with. Throughout the tour, he brought the city to life. From the stunning art and architecture to the rich history, cultural significance, and activist spirit behind so many of Oaxaca’s landmarks. What really made the experience special was how explorative and natural the tour felt. We explored beautiful streets and important historical sites while also stopping for some amazing food along the way. Every recommendation was fantastic. It felt like a walk with a knowledgeable friend who knew how to bring Oaxaca to life. If you’re visiting the city and have the chance to tour with Diego, do it. It ended up being one of the highlights of my trip.
We had a great tour of Oaxaca Centro with Diego. He is very knowledgeable and passionate about the history and culture of Oaxaca and Mexico.
Oscar did a great job and was so very personable. We really enjoyed our tour with him! He’s is so very knowledgeable about the history of Oaxaca and the area region in general. He made the tour all about us and what we wanted to see and do. We really enjoyed our time with Oscar.
Zaid was an incredibly guide during our tour of Oaxaca. He was informative, kind and very enthusiastic about the city he loves. He took us all over to places he wanted to show us and to places we asked him to take us too. We enjoyed 2 markets and sampled great food. He took us to some incredible museums too. We were together for close to 4 hours. We loved every minute of the tour! This was one of our best experiences in the city. It gave us a guideline for what we wanted to do with the 5 and 1/2 days we had left there. Thank you so much Zaid!
We have been to Oaxaca 3 previous times but never had a city tour. This time with our guide Jose we could appreciate the history and culture at a much deeper level. We're very glad that we booked this 3 hour tour through Viator tours.
Was very professional,friendly and knowledgeable
Tour guide had no training and very little knowledge of art, did not bring much to our own interests in the group. I guess you get what you pay for, it was free If you have no idea of what you’re looking at just book a professional tour maybe, inform yourself there’s plenty on the internet, otherwise enjoy the walk
Our tour guide was Zaid, and although he was very pleasant, he didn’t seem to have been trained by professional tour leaders. He had his own plan for our tour, despite our having asked for other locations. He did not provide an overview of history of the town; rather it seemed he was getting commissions from the various galleries he took us to. He also didn’t lay out the complete plan in advance. We were disappointed.
Diego was very informative and knew about the history of Oaxaca and its people. We had a great time.
The booking process was great - using trip advisor and then WhatsApp. Communication and coordination with our private guide , Diego was very clear. He was very know about the history and culture of Oaxaca and gave us a great overview. He pointed out lovely spots that we would not have found on our own. We thoroughly enjoyed and highly recommend.
We had such a lovely time on this tour! Our guide, Verónica, was amazing. She met us at our hotel and took us all around the city, tailoring the tour to our interests. We got to have some delicious meals at the markets too, which we were happy to let her facilitate. She was very generous with her time, attention, and knowledge; I'd absolutely recommend this tour to anyone seeking a warm welcome to beautiful Oaxaca.
Our private, three-hour walking tour of Central Oaxaca, led by Zaid E., was undoubtedly the best part of our four-day stay in Oaxaca. Zaid was an exceptional guide—knowledgeable, personable, and instantly likeable. He truly personalized the experience, asking about our interests and incorporating them into the itinerary. He also provided excellent recommendations and helpful tips for the rest of our stay. The tour itself was a delight. Zaid took us to his favorite, peaceful, and somewhat hidden coffee shop, as well as to vibrant mercados where we savored tlayudas made by timeless abuelas. Prompted by Zaid's impish goad, we sampled chapulines, toasted grasshoppers, and washed them down with fruit-flavored agua frescas. We also visited museums and galleries, marveling at the craft and unique style of the local art on display. We're very seasoned travelers but our time with Zaid ranks as one of the most enjoyable and memorable tours we've ever taken.
Yesi is a fantastic guide who has deep knowledge of the city, its history and its people. She shows you a lot on this tour - cultural landmarks, local markets, artisans and colourful neighbourhoods. We went on our first day in the city and it was an excellent way to get oriented. If you can go with Yesi as your guide it will be even better
Great walking tour. Ample time to see the city at an enjoyable walking pace. Angel was very knowledgeable and took us to the market for a great lunch
Friendly knowledgable guide, showed up on time. Lots of local knowledge. Helpful and thoughtful and recommended
Oscar was an excellent tour guide. He explained everything we wanted to know, took us into little shops, museums and courtyards we wouldn’t have found on our own. We felt so much more aware and centered within the city after our tour. Oscar is super knowledgeable and makes time to make sure you are getting what you want out of the tour. I would highly recommend booking a tour with Oscar.
Oscar, our guide, was great. He was both professional and friendly. He checked with us several times to see if we wanted to vary the tour in any way, but the sites he chose and the pace were both perfect. His knowledge of Oaxaca was impressive.
Our guide Yesi was professional and knowledgeable. We thoroughly enjoyed all of our stops throughout the tour. She made our first day in Oaxaca fun.
This is an excellent tour to do when you first arrive in Oaxaca to give you a sense of the City and the different areas. Yesi was an excellent guide as she was born and raised in Oaxaca but educated in US! She was fun to tour the City with and we also did some excellent food tastings along the way! Highly recommend!
Loved the tour, expert tour guide and loved the sites. Would recommend to any travelers wanting to know the city by foot.
This tour is an excellent way to get your bearings in Oaxaca, learn a little history of the area, and see the amazing colors and sites of the city. Our guide was friendly, knowledgeable and very helpful with advice for spending the rest of our time in Oaxaca.
I asked for someone who was English speaking. Leslie was a very nice person. She said she had only been taking English lessons for 6 months. She spoke limited English. She knew very little history about the areas she was taking me to. She couldn’t answer my questions about the areas we were visiting.
Pepe was an excellent guide. He knew so much about the city and was excellent at in sharing his knowledge. He was also great at tailoring the tour to our interests. Highly recommended!
Fantastic! Our guide Yesi was super knowledgeable, spoke amazing English, tailored our tour to what we were interested in, and took us to some great spots that we wouldn’t have found without her. She sent us a WhatsApp in advance of the tour so we knew all was arranged, and asked for our preferences so she could make sure the tour covered what we wanted. Highly recommended.
Unfortunately, the tour guide cancelled (very nicely) the day of as he had a plane that was arriving early. It was my only day free for a tour and no one could cover, so I was left without a tour. I think a guide shouldn’t agree to a tour unless they are in the city!
Zaid gave us a wonderful private tour full of art, Day of the Dead traditions, and local color. His English is excellent, and he knows all the best snack stops and hidden corners. Such a fun, personal way to start our time in Oaxaca — everyone seemed to know him!
Oscar was a great tour guide and showed us all of the highlights and some secret places too. He was friendly and knowledgeable and we would recommend him!
The best experience!, Highly recommended . You will discover the beauty of Oaxaca historic center . We would like to go back and explore it more with TripAdvisor.
Yesi was a wonderful tour guide. Knowledgable about the city, its districts, history and inhabitants. I learnt lots of interesting facts and all while eating delicious local foods that all felt like ‘hidden jems’. I’d recommend this tour to anyone coming to Oaxaca and wanting to learn more about the region and try all the great food it has to offer. The tour was tailored to my own food preferences and Yesi gave me many suggestions of other places to visit and things to see during this trip.
Oscar provided a comprehensive and enjoyable orientation to Oaxaca that helped me to enjoy the rest of my stay in the city. Due to a recent medical condition, I needed to go at a slower pace, and Oscar accommodated my needs while still providing an complete tour. Enjoying a local coffee shop and a delicious market meal were delightful enhancements to the experience. Oscar is an excellent guide whose English skills, local insights and thorough knowledge of Oaxaca made for a full and memorable tour. He is a capable guide whom I would recommend for any individual or group
We had a wonderful time touring the museum with Pepe. He was extremely knowledgeable on Mexican history and anthropology. We walked around the ground floor of the museum and covered a lot of interesting topics from agriculture to medicine to social structures. Highly recommend. The tour was a highlight of our trip to Mexico City!
My guide was amazing. I learned so much more about the local culture, history, foods and Oaxacan subtle treasures. I would have missed so many wonderful aspects of the beautiful city if I hadn't taken the tour.
Our guide Oscar was engaging, informative, warm, friendly & spoke excellent English. Since he had lived & worked in the US, he could apply & compare his experences with us. Highly recommend this food tour with Oscar.
Rolando was a great host in his home town! It was amazing. Rolando was outstanding with his knowledge, humor, kindness, warm personality and sincerity. His English was perfect. We learned so much and was introduced to many new things culturally. His knowledge of the history and architecture allowed us to gain insight into the many aspects of what makes Oaxaca City so special.
Ruth was an excellent guide and provided not only a comprehensive review of the city, but also great recommendations and interesting commentary. Wholeheartedly recommend!
Oscar was a fill-in for our original guide. I am SO glad he was able to be our guide. He was awesome!!! His knowledge and passion for the city of Oaxaca was so transparent in his presentation. He was so thoughtful and considerate. Asking if there was anything we needed to make the walking tour better. This was definitely one of the best tours we have been on and highly recommend Oscar as your guide.
This was our first time to Oaxaca and a private historical and food tour was the best introduction. Our guide, Yasmin, was fun to be with, informative, and showed us the historical architecture and markets. We were so grateful for having a fun and informative experience. This set us right for our stay.
Our tour with Yesi was excellent! She showed us parts of Oaxaca that we would not have seen. She was very knowledgeable of the history and culture. We also thoroughly enjoyed the food she introduced to us. We highly recommend this tour!
Vero was amazing she was very knowledgeable, friendly and patient! Tejate was a very interesting drink yet yummy! Thank you Vero :)
Sensational, know the corners and special places of the city. Very friendly treatment!! Food places dominate them.
Very good guide, adapts to your needs and knows the city very well. If there's anything you're interested in seeing a lot, it's worth telling them at first.
Ruth was an amazing guide! It made our tour very enjoyable, recommended many places and was super friendly. We would certainly repeat
