I had a great time exploring Oaxaca’s food scene with Oscar! This was a private food tour, which made the experience feel more personal and relaxed. We visited a local market, tried some delicious, authentic Oaxacan food, and walked around exploring the area. Oscar was knowledgeable, friendly, and great company throughout the tour. It felt more like exploring the city with a local than being on a typical guided tour. The experience was short but sweet and a great way to get a taste of Oaxaca’s food and culture. If you’re visiting Oaxaca and want to experience some authentic local food without spending an entire day on a tour, I definitely recommend booking with Oscar!

Our guide, Zaid, was pleasant and well informed on local culture and culinary locations visited. Great pace. Fun time and informative.
Diego was our guide. He was extremely informative, not only about the food, but about the history of the country and culture. The tour of the market was fascinating, with Diego educating us as to what was on display, including traditional beverages, sweets, coffee, mescal, cheese, fruits, herbs and vegetables of the region. We were truly impressed with his depth of knowledge and his passion for his country and its people. Along the tour, Diego also pointed out other places of interest worth visiting. We ended the tour at a quaint eatery which was able to accommodate a vegetarian diet. We would highly recommend taking this tour and feel we now have a deeper understanding and appreciation of Oaxaca, its culture and its people.
Great afternoon with Angel as our guide. Super friendly and informative - great choices of where and what to eat. We are STUFFED! Would recommend to anyone who wants to know their tacos from their tostadas and see parts of the City you probably wouldn’t see on your own.
Diego was knowledgeable about Oaxaca and was able to explain things related to the Oaxacan culture extremely well. He tailored the tour to meet our interests. We ordered some fruit smoothies at the market, but otherwise we mostly walked to many historical sites. It was an enjoyable afternoon and an excellent learning experience.
We had a good tour with Pepe. He was very knowledgeable about all the Oaxacan foods and expertly led us through the Nov 21st market and through mezcal tastings. There was zero pressure to buy anything which was appreciated. The only reason for 4 not 5 stars was we were clear about having a vegetarian in the group but everything came with meat. Would definitely recommend.
Had a great time with Yesi learning about the pre and post Colombian history of the city. Highly recommend this experience for anyone coming to Oaxaca for the first time! Oh and all the food we tasted was excellent as well!
Ruth was very knowledgeable & tailored tour to our needs. I was traveling with 2 seniors & she accommodated frequent breaks & shopping stops. Food she chose was representative of Oaxacan street food. Her recommendation of La Red was the culinary highlight of our trip!
The tour was incredible. Oscar, my tour guide, was so friendly, knowledgeable, and passionate about Oaxacan art and culture. He was also very funny :). This is a great tour for anyone who’s interested in exploring the parts of Oaxaca that appeal the most to them.
Oscar was our tour guide and did a phenomenal job. He's engaging, easy to talk to, and taught us so much about Oaxaca. He also has a lot of recommendations he's happy to share. Definitely recommend picking this tour to learn about the history and get to enjoy some great food!
Oscar was engaging, friendly, informative & his English is excellent. Doing it at 4pm was perfect for a happy hour timing with a meal followed by dessert with ice cream. Picked up some mole to take home too.
We booked this tour as a group tour but we got lucky since we were the only ones in the group therefore turned into a private tour. Our guide Pepe was fantastic ! He was knowledgeable, informative and most importantly passionate about sharing his knowledge and love for Oaxaca. It was far beyond the food tour - As we booked him on early part of our stay, we can take our knowledge and really enjoy what Oaxaca offers ! Strongly recommend requesting Pepe for the guide !
Sofia was friendly and knowledgeable. She had good relationships with each of the vendors we visited and the food was excellent. She responded quickly to messages.
I was part of a ladies trip to Oaxaca in early February. Our food tour with Betsy was clearly the highlight of our time in the city. She speaks excellent English, is quite knowledgeable and led us on a wonderful foodie adventure for almost 4 hours. We all loved our time with Betsy! We cannot recommend her more highly!
First our guide failed to show up. They rescheduled for the next day after we waited the better part of the afternoon. We got a discount but still believed it to be overpriced. The tour didn’t include any food from the street. We tried two dishes at the market and a drink each. We were hoping to understand more about the amazing cuisine in Oaxaca. We didn’t seem to have anything that was uniquely oaxacan. The guide didn’t give us options or explain local produce and couldn’t wait to leave. Utterly disappointing.
Elizabeth was a fantasic host and very knowledgeable about the food and history of the area. I would definately recommed this tour
The guide was very personable and knowledgeable about the local market and food. She went out of her way to make us feel comfortable and welcome.
Elizabeth spoke very good English and gave us a lot of information about culture and food in Oaxaca. We were given the opportunity at our cost to try any of the food and drink she discussed. The two markets we visited were close together. We also visited a Mezcal shop and a chocolate shop. We recommend this tour.
We booked this tour literally on the morning through email, very quick response time! Elizabeth our guide spoke PERFECT english & explained all the food and its preparation clearly to us and was patient as we asked questions and took notes... the tour ended up as a private tour and went onto 2.5h instead of the 1.5h. We stoped at 2 food markets & ate soooo much food! Definately go without eating breakfast... the flame cooked meat was my favourite & we will go back to eat there again during our stay. We brought our baby in her buggy which was not ideal for the narrow crouded market streets but we managed, i would suggest a baby carrier would be easier... Absolutely would reccomend to friends and family!
We booked a street food tour with low expectations. We were lucky that we were the only 2 booked on the tour. We are one vegetarian and one pescatarian. Our guide, Itzl, did not know our food preferences ahead of time, but quickly adapted the tour to suit us. She is a local woman and took us to spots that we wouldn’t have known about via online blogs/guides- including long-standing institutions with history. She gave us information about the history of Oaxaca in relation to food and was a wealth of knowledge about culture. She seems very happy to answer questions- and we had many. She gave us ideas for future places to eat in Oaxaca, too. She was so smart and friendly- she spent extra time with us, past the official end of the tour, answering questions and talking. We were very pleased with our experience and highly recommend Itzl as a guide!
You have got to arrive hungry for this! The group visits two lively markets and samples drinks, barbeque, tamales with mole negro, chile rellenos, desserts and more. Friendly, fun and informative.
Took the food tour that cost $15 per person last week of October of this year 2019 and was disappointed. The tour was not run well or at all informative. It was myself, my sister and a group of 5 others that were a friends. The tour guide did little except walk us around the city. We stopped at Mezcal store, Mayordomo chocolate shop/ restaurant and large Benito Juarez market. Most of the places/ stalls we stopped at gave free samples to try but would have done that even if we were not on a tour. Guide provided little knowledge and insight. Literally guide did not teach us one thing. Guide just was wandering around the market and let the group of 5 people take over by letting them run the tour, go off to buy things, stand around and talk etc. guide had no control nor actually ran anything. Tour was supposed to be 1.5-2 hours. At two hours I had to leave as I had been sitting there for a half hour waiting on other people to finish their beers. The guide just led us around the market blindly and kept asking us where we wanted to stop to eat- no guidance at what stalls were good, no inside info, etc. We finally sat at a stall in the market to eat and the stall was not even a good one- in fact it was a steal crowded by tourists and busy. Definitely not an authentic spot. Guide lost total control of group and it stunk as people like myself were subject to the large group whims. I did not pay to sit there and watch other Americans just stand around and drink beer. Didn’t get to complete tour as it went way over. The two hours I did spend on the tour was a waste of time and money. There is literally nothing on the tour that I couldn’t do, try or see alone. I should have just done free tour. Oaxaca has such rich culinary heritage I was very disappointed.
Beside the great tour and tour guide (Elisabeth), what I like the most is that food is not included, so you can buy whatever you feel like trying!
We thoroughly enjoyed the tour. Our guide, Jacob, was friendly and informative. We learned a lot about the markets, and the various foods and drinks within. Our two kids (9 & 5) also had a good time. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Oaxaca.
I was hoping to get an insight into different dishes and try different things. However, we were guided to 3 different stands in a targeted manner and did not have much choice or opportunity to try or get to know the things that would have really interested us. All in all, unfortunately disappointing and not what I imagine a street food tour to be.
Highly recommended, the places visited during the tour have really Oaxacan and quality food.
