Good small group adventure to the countryside. The mezcals were delicious and the guide was very knowledgable about the entire process.

Itinerary
Once we have gathered, we will begin with a brief explanation of the day ahead and toast with a fine mezcal to kick off the journey to Teotitlán del Valle.
We will begin our journey through mountainous landscapes, arriving at Santa María Teotitlán del Valle—a traditional artisan village—where we will visit a wool dyeing and weaving workshop to see the ancient Zapotec dyeing technique up close.
A journey through the agave fields: Upon arriving in the village, we will begin our tour by strolling through the agave fields, where the robust plants stand tall like guardians of Oaxacan heritage. Amidst a landscape of mountains, cacti, and agaves, we will immerse ourselves in their history, tracing their transformation from the earth's embrace to the nectar that graces your glass. And, of course, there will be plenty of photo opportunities.
Revealing Traditions Our journey continues at the doors of my family’s mezcal distillery, where the air is rich with the sweet aroma of roasted agave — a promise of the treasures that await inside. Guided by me and our maestro mezcalero, you’ll step back in time to witness the ancient process that transforms the humble agave hearts into the liquid gold known as mezcal. The highlight of our experience comes with a tasting of our finest mezcals, each one with its own character, story, and soul. As you raise your glass, the velvety spirit dances on your tongue, revealing flavors that range from earthy and smoky to delicate and floral. With my guidance, you’ll learn to recognize the subtle nuances in every sip — a journey that awakens your senses and deepens your appreciation for this remarkable elixir.
Taking a Piece of Oaxaca Home As the day comes to an end, you’ll have the chance to take a piece of Oaxaca’s magic home with you. Choose from our curated selection of artisanal mezcals, each one carefully crafted to capture the essence of our land. Every bottle carries a part of the story you’ve lived today — a story of tradition, craftsmanship, and the deep connection between the earth and this sacred spirit.
Oaxacan Feast & Friendship In the warmth of my family’s home, an authentic Oaxacan feast awaits. The table overflows with traditional dishes — each one carrying the flavors and stories of our heritage. As we gather to share food, laughter, and mezcal, bottles are uncorked and friendships are born in the joyful spirit of celebration. Here, cultures meet and connect, turning every toast into a living tribute to the magic of mezcal and the soul of Oaxaca.
Until We Meet Again As we make our way back to the meeting point, we carry with us memories that will forever flavor our hearts. The bonds we’ve formed, the flavors we’ve tasted, and the stories we’ve shared will continue to connect us long after the warmth of the mezcal fades. The drive from our meeting point to Mitla takes about 45 minutes, and the same for the return trip. Thank you for sharing the liquid culture of Mexico with us — until we meet again!

Leida was knowledgeable about family owned Mezcal making from start to the end. Took us to a Great lunch spot. Went out the way to drop me at my stay. I would highly recommend her and this tour to those interested in Mezcal
The description of this experience sounded so amazing: a very personalized tour with a mezcal maestro, a fabulous traditional family lunch with an intimate setting. But unfortunately this was not the case. Although the guide Leyda was extremely professional and knowledgeable and the trip to the agave fields was informative and fun, the food experience was not at all good. We were taken to a roadside eatery and given one dish (with a lot of meat, when I had told them I was vegetarian! They rectified this by giving me a dish of veg and taking away the cheese!), very loud music and no atmosphere. I wrote to Alvaro and explained my disappointment and he was very communicative and apologized, but for us this was a once in a lifetime experience and I’m afraid I can’t recommend it based on the price and compared with other tours. It did not meet my expectations.
Great experience when you are in Oaxaca. Our guide is very informative and speaks english fluently. Thank you!
Experience was amazing. Our guide Leyda especially made the day, she was incredible! Loved walking through the agave fields, and then seeing the whole process of how the Mezcal is made from start to finish. Tasting was great and the lunch they took us to was truly delicious- would absolutely do this again!
We had an amazing afternoon on the Mezcal and countryside tour. The first stop to the textile factory was very informative and interactive. Alvaro was a great guide with tons of knowledge about Mezcal and Oaxaca. We toured the beautiful agave fields, practiced using a machete, and learned the entire Mezcal production process from the field to the bottle. The Mezcal tasting was fun and informative, and the Mezcal all tasted great! Finally we shared a traditional Oaxacan lunch at a beautiful restaurant. Highly recommend this tour for a wonderful experience, and thank you so much Alvaro!
Exc experience w Leida & Alvaro - so knowledgeable. Lots of Mezcal, fabulous lunch, really enjoyed learning about the rug/textiles. Would give them 6/5stars.
Other than the ride from Oaxaca to Mitla (the car was a tight fit for 5 guests) it was a great trip. Fun, entertaining and very informative, followed by an amazing lunch. The work that goes into each bottle of Mezcal is insane!
Very informative and enjoyable. Pick-up point was a little confusing, but Alvon’s generosity sincere desire to provide a n exceptional experience overcame any difficulty. Lots to taste! Excellent lunch!
Oh man what a treat. Alvaro was so kind, passionate and had a great sense of humor. He truly cares about making your experience the best it can possibly be. He cares so deeply about his craft and wants to let you in on it. This was THE highlight of our trip. If you see this tour available book it, book it, book it!
This tour went beyond our expectations! Our tour guide was amazing and the stop at the textile co-op was a fantastic treat. The mezcal tour was very informative and the mezcal was delicious ! We feel educated and lived every minute of it! You won’t be disappointed!!!
This was truly a 10/10 experience! Alberto and Gustavo picked us up at the meeting spot and immediately made us feel welcome and comfortable. Once we arrived, Alvaro gave us a tour of his family’s palenque From the agave fields, to explaining the cultivation process and walking us through the distillation step by step. We had the opportunity to sample 10+ different mezcales, including some very special ones they produce at the palenque. The experience concluded with a lovely lunch, which was the perfect way to end such an incredible day. From start to finish, everything was thoughtfully organized and genuinely special. We learned so much and had an amazing time. The small group size was a huge plus, as it allowed for more personal interaction and plenty of time to ask questions. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting the area. Thank you again to the wonderful team! Elena and Andy
This tour was a highlight of our trip to Oaxaca. Alvaro was incredibly kind and knowledgeable — we learned a ton, tasted some wonderful mezcals, and had a great meal together. Would highly recommend!
This trip was so fun and informative. We walked the land and saw the many varieties of agave, with a chance to machete the leaves! We tasted the different mezcals highlighting the different notes; almost like a wine tasting. We saw how the agave was processed and made and had a delicious lunch. I highly recommend this trip and Alvaro was wonderful.
I do enjoy a good mezcal and this tour helped me to better appreciate the process of making a truly good mezcal. I wanted to experience all of the steps of going from farm to bottle and I was not disappointed. Our guide was a third generation family member and his presentation clearly demonstrated his knowledge, passion, and pride in the product and the industry. The tasting session brought the whole experience to a wonderful end (at the distillery) followed by a delicious lunch off-site. I highly recommend this tour if you are looking for a similar experience.
So cool to see the process from the maguey fields, to fermentation, to the bottle. We tasted 10+ mezcals and had a delicious lunch. Our guide was fun, knowledgeable, and passionate about his family distillery.
This was a fantastic experience and we highly recommend it. Alvaro did a wonderful job of educating us on all things related to Mezcal growing, harvesting, and distilling. The tour provided opportunities to visit the fields to see the various species of Agave used, including some of the rarer species that the family harvests in the nearby mountains. The distilling process and the array of different Mezcals produced provided an in-depth education, and being able to taste many of them expanded our horizons on the spirit. The included lunch was incredible and far beyond what we expected. This was the most memorable distillery tour we have ever done - and we've done quite a few!
This tour was wonderful in many ways. Alvaro was so kind and very knowledgeable and wanted us to really experience what a working agave/mezcal farm and distillery is like. We walked the agave fields, learned about different varieties, tried our hand at trimming the leaves with a machete, tasted several varieties after witnessing the distilling process from start to finish. Ended with a lovely lunch. Way better than our expectations! Thank you Alvaro!!
We had such a great day with Alvaro. He was incredibly welcoming and knowledgeable. It felt special to visit his land and learn about the different agave plants growing there.
What an amazing experience! Alvaro is so kind and knowledgeable, he went above and beyond to make sure we had a pleasant time. The tour was interesting and the mezcal delicious. Make sure to check it out.
We had been in Mexico for two weeks, and Oaxaca for one week, by the time we took a tour of Álvaro’s palenque. We both agreed that it was undoubtedly the most special day of the trip thus far. It ended up being just me and my partner on the tour as there were some last minute cancellations. Every aspect of the tour was wonderful, from the exploration of the agave fields to the detailed walkthrough of the distillation process at the distillery, and then the tasting of many excellent mezcals. The care and consideration Álvaro put into his explanations really demonstrated his passion for his family business. We finished the day by sharing a meal together before he drove us back to the city. My partner has many very severe food allergies and Álvaro made sure that he had safe food options to eat during the meal which we really, really appreciated. We learned a huge amount from Álvaro, and have a newfound respect and understanding for this art of mezcal production, and for Oaxaca itself. We would definitely recommend this tour, you’ll love it!! Thank you, Álvaro!
We had a phenomenal experience! Super knowledgeable guide and delicious mezcal with a small group. Highly recommend!
A truly unique experience to spend time with a member of a the family owned mezcal distillery. The walk through the agave plants was fun and informative and the tasting experience was a blast. Closed it out with a fulfilling and delicious lunch. Alvoral was kind, funny and informative. His family has built something beautiful and you can tell the passion will extend to future generations. This authentic experience is a “can’t miss”. Transportation is easy and comfortable.
We absolutely loved our tour today! It was so immersive and our guide was super knowledgeable, passionate and friendly. It was wonderful to visit the fields and the distillery for tasting and our lunch was insane! Definitely recommend.
My husband and I had an amazing time on this tour and would absolutely recommend it to anyone! We usually don’t commit to scheduled activities when we travel and prefer to do our own thing, but we’re SO glad we decided to go for it on this one. The day we spent with Alvaro was a highlight of our trip! We loved getting to know him and visiting his family’s agave farm and palenque, learning about different plants and traditional mezcal-making, then being able to compare that with a larger operation. The tasting was very generous, and we learned a ton; we feel much more confident choosing good mezcal now (and of course brought a few bottles of El Discipulo home with us). We also really enjoyed the other couple on our tour, the delicious traditional lunch, and getting out of the city to see the surrounding area, including Mitla. This felt like a truly authentic experience and a great way to connect with Oaxacan culture. Highly recommend spending the day with Alvaro! Thank you so much!!
We loved this experience. My fiance loves Mezcal and Alvaro was super nice and knowledgeable. The views were incredible and the mezcal tasting was so much fun. The little restaurant we went to eat was perfect after the mezcal tasting. We would definitely recommend this to anyone.
Amazing! We couldn’t recommend this more. From pick up to drop off it was a pleasure to spend the day with Alvaro. Learned so much, saw the beauty of his family’s ranch, enjoyed so many mescal flavors and profiles (all with fun and facts) and a delicious lunch. If we could give 10 stars we would. Don’t miss this one!
We loved the experience we had touring the agave fields and visiting the distillery. Alvaro provides an exceptional amount of knowledge and is a suburb guide. We started the day with an easy ride to Mitla exploring the fields first, seeing several species of agave. Next we went to the distillery and learned the process and sampled lots of mezcal. We finished the day with a nice lunch before heading back. I highly suggest this mezcal tour over others as the distillery and agave fields are a small business, family owned and operated and they are still producing mezcal the artisinal way. Thank you my friend for such a memorable day and experience
What an awesome experience with Alvaro on his family’s mezcal farm and distillery! If you want to learn about the process of making mezcal, see it in action, and then taste various agave versions in the beautiful setting of Mitla, I’d highly recommend this tour. A delicious lunch was an additional bonus. Of course, I couldn’t resist buying some bottles to enjoy later. Salud!
It ended up being just the three of us so it was a “private “ tour. Our guide was so attentive to our every need and worked in extra things to see and do that were not on the original itinerary.
This tour was incredible, we loved our experience! Far from the big agencies tour that will give you a taste of marketing, here you’ll find an authentic, deep and fun experience! Alvaro our guide, is part of a family business here in Oaxaca, in guided us through the history of artisanal mezcal. We went first to Mitlà to visit the forteleza, the place where they grew the agave. We learned about the history, varieties and the differences between species. The. We went to the family Mezcaleria - it was so beautiful ! We tried many different mezcal (they have so much but if you dare you can try it all 😅). Everything is artesanal - meaning they don’t add additives or refined sugars as they do in the industrial brands - they have the best kinds!! Alvaro will guide you through your preferences to taste the ones you may like the most 🩷 I’ve even tried one mezcal distilled with turkey! (Yes it’s a thing and very rare to find!!). Then we went to the Mezcaleria Mal de amor to eat a traditional lunch 🥙 and went back to town with the best bottles and the best souvenirs !!

Alvaro was an attentive and super knowledgeable guide. We felt we made a great choice going with him instead of a large group. He was very generous in the mezcal tasting! We purchased several bottles of mezcal because they were excellent and we gained an appreciation for the process. We are vegetarians and were able to enjoy a nice lunch as well.
It was a great experience getting to know the world of Mezcal and our guide, whose family has been working the land and producing Mezcal for generations!
If you have any second thought or hesitations, just don't. This is the only tour you need to book to know everything and beyond about mezcal. Alvaro was professional, courteous, knowledgeable, and accommodating. No usual tourist traps. Straight and authentic experience. Highly recommended! Thank you, Alvaro for hosting us.
This tour was better than we ever could have expected! Alvaro was so informative and nice! We got to see his family agave farm where he showed us all the different agave plants and told us how it’s grown and harvested. We got to taste a ton of different mezcals and then ended the tour with a great lunch. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone and I would definitely take it again with Alvaro!
Fantastic educational tour! Alvaro was our guide and he was able to answer all our questions. Loved it. The mezcals we tried at the end we're delicious and covered a wide range of agaves. Bottles prices were great. We started at the agave fields, learned a bit, made our way to the distillery, learned some more and tried different mezcals. Then we made our way to a restaurant to end the day. Perfect.
We had such a great time getting the tour with Alvaro. Not only was he extremely knowledgeable on the process of making mezcal, explaining it, and mezcal itself, but he was also such a joy to hang out with him. Our group was filled with great people who enjoyed mezcal and Oaxacan food. Highly recommend this tour!
Our host was phenomenal. He was very knowledgeable about the entire process of the mezcal distillation. He also shared his knowledge about the native cactis' benefits.
What a fantastic experience, and Alvaro was a wonderful host and person! Being able to see the rows of agave and different types was breathtaking (and great for pictures). But trying out the machete and drinking mezcal from one of the spears!? A unique and unforgettable experience for sure. And then after learning and seeing the process from agave to mezcal, we had the mezcal tastings - so many! Even as someone who doesn't love mezcal, I appreciated trying them and even liked a few. Somehow, the one with the scorpion in the bottle tasted good!? We were a small group (5 of us) and Alvaro answered all our questions, took pictures, and was such a kind and gracious host. Note this wasn't a "get drunk" tour, this was a "appreciate how this complex liquor is created, meet the people and process behind the scenes, and find a mezcal (or two or five) you enjoy sipping." The perfect tour!
Fantastic experience from the very beginning. Not only was the entire tour informational, but it gave me a true respect for the art of mezcal making. Alvaro was perfect, very friendly, sharing many details about creating mezcal. Then putting it all together in the tasting when we got back to the main spot where we tried quite a few different mezcals. He answered all of our questions. Afterward, we went to a nearby spot for some food, which was also excellent. Normally I would not go back to a tour after I've done it before, but with Alvaro, I 100% would want to come back with friends for this experience.
As a wine enthusiast who has studied wine for years, I approached this mezcal tour with an open mind—and it was an unforgettable experience. Spending the afternoon with Alvaro, I gained a deep appreciation for mezcal, its parallels with wine, and the pride Oaxaca’s people have in this spirit, which is deeply woven into their culture. Alvaro’s passion was evident as he welcomed us into his family distillery, sharing his expertise and stories about mezcal. Learning about agave and the intricate production process was fascinating, but the real highlight? Tasting far too many bottles! I left with two to bring home to Singapore—perfect for sharing with friends. If you’re visiting Oaxaca, this is an experience you can’t miss!

We loved this Mezcal experience and highly recommend!! It was great getting to see the entire process from beginning to end and met so many great people as well. We felt truly immersed in the Mezcal journey and our guide was so attentive and detailed. 10/10
We had to meet across town at 9am, I received an email at 12:15am to say our guide had stomach issues! Had to rebook for the next day with assurances I would be contacted by early evening the night before. No contact, I reached out twice to ask if it was still on, no responses. At 5:46am the day of, the guide txt to say he was in hospital. Don’t use this company!
Alvaro is a fantastic human and so passionate and knowledgeable about every part of the process from farming to distillation. We sample roughly 14 mezcals from many diffeeent species of agave and had an amazing Oaxacan meal following it all. He was patient and honestly just a pleasure to spend a day with. The ranch was spectacular and the distillery gorgeous. If you're considering a Mezcal tour, I can't say enough good about this one!
Intimate and extensive knowledge of,and access to, both the agave fields and the Mescal distillery with this family business made for a great trip. Add a fun group in multiple languages and a delicious lunch and a terrific day was had by all. Xxx
This tour exceeded all of our expectations. Alvaro and Oscar showed us the world of mezcal through a visit to the farm, the distillery and topping it off with an amazing lunch. Alvaro was knowledgeable, fun and simply a delight. Highly recommend … well worth it!!
The distillery itself is a marvel of rustic charm and authenticity. The copper stills, wooden fermentation vats, and stone tahonas (mills) are all integral parts of the mezcal-making process
I cannot recommend this mezcal tour with Alvaro. I intentionally booked it, because of the good reviews and authentic experience. However, the night before the tour, Alvaro messaged me to see if we could start 2 hours later. I let him know that was fine. However, when my husband and I showed up, Alvaro wasn't there and we were part of a different tour, the Mezcal Journey (also available on Viator). Alvaro never mentioned this, and when I messaged him again to ask, he said he runs this tour together with his cousin. While we made the most of the tour, it was not what we signed up for and I felt like it was deceiving of Alvaro to bait and switch the offer. The tour description says there is a limit of 10 people, but there were 15 people on our tour, which made it sometimes difficult to hear and less intimate than I expected. The tour also lasted 6 1/2 hours, instead of 4-5 hours, which caused us to be extremely rushed for our dinner reservation. When I messaged Alvaro afterwards, he agreed to a partial refund, which we both thought was fair (50% of the fee he received from Viator). After several messages back and forth, it's now been a month since the tour and I've yet to receive a refund. This all could have been avoided if Alvaro followed through with the tour I signed up for or better communicated ahead of time that the change in plans was more than the start time. Overall, I feel like I didn't get the experience I expected and paid for. Charging tourists a hefty price and not delivering is fraud, so I can't recommend this tour.
