We originally booked a different tour with a smaller group, but luckily it got cancelled and we ended up joining this one. Looking back, I couldn’t be happier about that because this was hands down the best experience of our entire trip in Mexico! Our guide, Leon, deserves a special mention because he truly made this day unforgettable. He’s one of those rare people who instantly makes you feel comfortable, brings everyone together and makes you feel like you’re spending the day with a good friend rather than a tour guide. His enthusiasm, humour, knowledge and genuine kindness made all the difference. He went above and beyond to make sure everyone was having a great time, and his passion really shines through in everything he does. You can tell he genuinely loves what he does. We initially booked a tour that would only take us to Hierve el Agua, but the mezcal tasting was included as well, and it turned out to be the absolute highlight of the day! Such an authentic, fun and memorable experience. Honestly, Leon made this tour what it was. We feel lucky to have met him and would recommend this experience to anyone visiting Oaxaca. If you get Leon as your guide, you’re in for a fantastic day!

Beyond amazing day. Start to finish. love Leon! Highly highly recommend booking this tour and enjoying all the sites. Hierve el Agua is fantastic! Would do it again!
This trip made for a very fun day away from central Oaxaca. We visited Tule briefly then had plenty of time at the falls and at a mescal palenque and tasting room. Leon was an excellent guide! Highly recommend him.
It was really fun. Had a great experience.
We went with this tour over others on TripAdvisor because it didn’t cram as many activities into the same trip, and we were extremely satisfied with the excursion. Steph was friendly, engaging, and hospitable on the ride between sides and we learned a lot from her. Otto drove us very safely and the van was cool and comfortable. It was great to have a full 3 hours at hierve el agua - the perfect amount of time to hike, swim, and have lunch (though the hike was more difficult than many of us expected due to the elevation and heat, so bring water and sun protection!). Steph kept us well-supplied with mezcal throughout the day, and the distillery tour on the way back was educational, delicious, and fun. The vibes were immaculate overall. I would definitely recommend this tour to anyone wanting to see hierve el agua!
This tour is excellent. Many other tours start at 08.00am and finish at 20.00, which is your entire day and too long. This tour start around 09.00 and you're back at 18.00 - still plenty of time for dinner and drinks. It focuses on two key things rather than try to fit in too many things, although we sti had some time for a quick pit stop at things like a local bakery! The tour guide, Leon is excellent. Really knowledgeable and friendly. He's very passionate about Oaxaca and its history and is more than happy to answer any questions. Overall, this tour is perfect. Informative, fun - a great day out.
We have taken a Viator trip before which included a Mezcal tasting, but this one was done very well and very informative in many different ways. Our tour guide was excellent, and we are looking forward to coming back next year. He went over and beyond what we expected, including two extra little stops, so tell him thank you.
This was a great day! Steph was a fantastic guide. The pools were beautiful and the mescal tasting was fun and very generous. Highly recommend - I'd do it again.
Our trip to hierve el agua was one of the highlights of our Oaxaca trip. Margarita was such a fantastic guide and had great information on history, local customs, geography and everything in between. It was the perfect balance of personal and professional. She was just the best. Our driver Hugo kept us safe, on time, and also joined in on giving us recommendations on further things to explore and places to eat for the rest of our time in Oaxaca. This trip gave us plenty of time to fully explore Hierve el agua (we hiked and swam), and gave us an insiders view of the mezcal distilling process. I would highly recommend this trip to anyone that wants a day trip that doesn’t feel rushed with excellent guides who really know their stuff. Excellent value!
I had a great experience. Leo was a great guide. He went above and beyond to help make sure that we had a great time. We had a great day.
We had an awesome time! Léon was the best guide. He gave us lots of information and extra stops to make the trip really special. The mezcal tasting with Santiago was great - we ended up getting way more mezcal than advertised (and they advertised a lot!). The hike at Hierve Al Agua is difficult but beautiful, and you can immerse in the cold water afterwards. Taking a tour is a little bit touristic, but we had a nice group so it was definitely worth it (instead of renting a car) and it was great value for money. Make sure you ask for Léon as your guide as he is truly the best and feels like a friend!
What a day! Hierve Del Agua is a spectacular place to visit, and our guide was exceptional - friendly, knowledgeable and fun. Seeing the process by which Mezcal is made was fascinating… and the tasting was positively intoxicating. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Great tour, with very knowledgeable guides. The hike was easy—we didn’t hire a local guide for that part so walked on our own. The pools looked nice and refreshing, but the weather was a bit too cold for us to fully swim so we just dipped our feet in after the hike. Others in our tour group were braver and went for a dip though. The mezcal tasting was generous—we had 10-14 samples and learned a lot about the distillation process along the way.
Had a fantastic day doing the Mitla, Tula, Hierve el Agua, Mezcal tour earlier this month (4 December). Good commentary from our guide and the size of the group was just right. For me, it was a last minute booking and I'm really glad to have done it. Especially enjoyed Hierve el Agua and of course the mezcal visit. Good value, too. Definitely recommend it.
Great organizer and great tour. I didn’t want all the other fuzz that other organizers offer and I wanted to get to hierve el agua early so this was great for me! I definitely recommend going with Oaxaca by locals. Stefi was a great tour operator and made the ride so much more interesting and fun! :)
Our guide Margarita was very friendly and knowledge and fun! We had plenty of time to.enjoy the water pools and explore on a 1 hour hike. The Mezcal tour was also wonderful, super cool to see the entire cultivation and distillery process of the agave and to try the different Mezcals. We definitely recommend this tour
Great tour - also included a quick stop at a bakery to sample local breads. Our guide, Margarita was excellent and extremely knowledgeable and the Mezcal tasting included 14 varieties!
Boil the water is a poor translation of "Hierve el Agua" that makes it sound unsanitary. It actually means "boiling water" and reflects the beautiful bubbling and swimmable calcite pools. Its a really pretty place and worth the trip. You can buy a swimsuit or whatever you need there. If you have your own transportation considering going back to Mitla over the mountain, its steep and gravel but you can do it, and at the top is the lovely mezcal distillery "Portal al Cielo" - Entrance to the Sky (or Heaven) - with lovely views back where you came and on to the Valle Central of Oaxaca. The road turns up the hill from another distillery as you pass through nearby Roaguia,
It was beautiful to experience the nature out in Oaxaca, plus the mezcal tasting! Leon was an excellent tour guide. Jose the driver was also great! With Leon's vibrant personality and insightful information, we were able to make lovely memories together but, also with our fun group. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Oaxaca.
My time with Stephany was great, she was very kind and informative. She made us feel like family during our visit to Hierve de Agua, also the mizcal tasting was the best that I’ve been too. I definitely would highly recommend this tour and Stephany as your guide. Looking forward in all the recommendation she gave us around the city.
Well organized. Plenty of time at Hierve. Friendly tour guides. Comfortable minibus. We also stopped at a cempasuchil farm as it was week of Dua de Muertos
Fantastic tour. Everything worked to perfection. Great tips for the Hievre bike and ample time to complete the hike and enjoy the waters. Mezcal distillery tour was really informative and such nice staff at the distillery. Plenty of time to sample and enjoy the mezcal. Got to mention it guide Marguerite. She was fantastic. So full of life and enjoyment. Looked after everybody do well
This was a blast. Our guide was super fun and very knowledgable. Hierve el Agua is a stunning formation you cannot miss while in Oaxaca, and the three-hours the tour leaves you there is more than enough time to do a quick hike, swim in the pools, and grab a bite to eat. The mezcal tasting and plantation tour was also fantastic with deeply enthusiastic, passionate staff that love what they do. Our tour, however, ran two hours over the allocated time. That was partially because our Mezcal tasing went over, and also because there were protests in the area that caused a traffic nightmare to no fault of the tour. We would highly recommend this experience.
Love it ! Estefania was the perfect guide, funny and knowledgeable. The nature at the cascade is beautiful and the swim such a nice addition. The degustation of Mezcal was also such a fun moment. We leave this tour with a lot of precious memories.
Great trip and well organized. Waterfalls were amazing and the taste test were great fun. Look forward to the next trip.
Great excursion and the mezcal tasting was a Very interesting! Margarita has been really nice as well and very knowledgeable:)
Fabulous tour—Rodrigo was incredibly informative and interesting about Oaxaca and its history, as well as very funny and good-humored! We enjoyed everything we did and appreciated all the information and recommendations on food and mezcal, as well as the actual scheduled stops. I was a bit apprehensive about the hike as I hadn’t thought through shoes when I was packing, but the very gentle hike we did (around the side of the falls) was fine in decent, secure sandals. There are much more aggressive hikes available, I believe—next time! The mezcal distillery tour was also fascinating. I was really interested in the whole process and the different types of agave, and how wild agave differed from cultivated agave. They are very generous with the sample pours, so definitely have something to eat before you get there 😵💫 My Spanish isn’t up to following that much information, so if yours is the same you’ll be happy to know that Rodrigo is really bilingual.
Absolutely amazing experience. Our guide was Rodriquez and driver was Eduardo. They went every extra mile to make this experience memorable. From explaining the history in detail to ensuring we are really enjoying the experience, he left nothing on chance. Distillery experience followed by mezcal tasting was great too We probably tasted 10 different variants and learnt a lot about the drink. Highly recommend!
Fantastic day trip from Oaxaca! Hierve el Agua was beautiful and we loved being able to swim in the pools. Hike down was a bit too steep for us so we stuck to the elevated portion via the stairs. Still had amazing views of the falls! Mezcal distillery was very interesting, delicious samples and well priced. Our guide Rodrigo and our driver Eduardo were fantastic! Would recommend!
The tour and the guide was great. For sure worth the drive. So much information was given. The hike then the dip in the water was so rewarding. Then the mezcal factory and agave farm was a great way to end the day.
This was an amazing experience. The guides were incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. Hierve el Agua was spectacular and some amazing photo opportunities. The mezcal distillery tour was amazing. Lots of different mezcals to taste, learning about how mezcal is made and also seeing the mezcal fields and learning about different type of agave. Would definately recommend this tour.
Book this tour with Margarita. Margarita was our tour guide, and she knows how to have fun, and ensure everyone had a great experience. She is algo really knowledgeable about the places we visited, so you’ll learned a lot about Oaxaca’s history and the culture. I title my review false advertisement because it was beyond my expectations. Definitely book this tour if you like hiking, swimming in mineral pools, drink mezcal and enjoy traditional artisan bread.
Had a great time on this tour. The view at Hierve el Agua was amazing! Pools were cute but didn't spend too much time in them as the rocks were a little slippery. Had a good time at the Mezcal Distillery Tour. It's a short tour but had a great time with the tasting. Braulio and our driver were amazing! So fun and really showed us a great time. They stopped at a vendor on the side of the road when we expressed interest in seeing some of the insects that were in the mezcal.
Loved the tour guide Margarita!!! She was so funny! Favorite part was the Mezcal tour, she really took of us and was super knowledgeable! And the bakery actually had GOOD food. Usually the tours take you to some expensive bad restaurant. But the bakery was cheap and delicious! Gladly got a Tamal with a hot chocolate.
The hike was great. An hour and 15 mins for the 'long' variety. Waterfalls are great, but the real treat is the ponds for swimming with a view. Maguerita, our guide was awesome and super fun to hang out with. The distillery tour was fun and they sent above and beyond for the mezcal tasting. We tasted 7 different mezcals (some more than once) and a handful of cremas as well. Let's just say that we got our moneys worth during the tasting. 10/10 will recommend. Salud.
Hierve el Agua is not to be missed if you are visiting Oaxaca. I think we really lucked out with this tour, there was plenty of time to hike and cool off in the pools, and our tour guide Margherita was extremely knowledgeable, friendly, and fun. This is a great experience for people who like to travel independently but want a reliable way to visit Hierve el Agua. We also really enjoyed visiting the distillery and learning a ton about mezcal. They were incredibly generous with the tasting and we had so much fun!
Hierve agua was amazing, the view was beautiful! Wonderful experience! Mezcal tasting was fun and educational!! Our tour guide Braulio was friendly and fun!
Margarita was a super fun, very knowledgable guide! She explained both hierva de agua and the process of distilling mezcal in great detail, plus she could answer so many additional questions. The tour was a ton of fun!
Great tour, this is a must do when visiting Oaxaca! We did the ~1.5 hour hike around Hierve el Agua with a guide, and then took a dip in the pools. You can change into a swimsuit if you want or just on the ledge like I did. We grabbed a quick lunch there and then visited the Valle Oaxaca mezcal distillery for a tour and mezcal tasting. We got to learn about the 7 types of mezcal and taste all of them plus other variations. You should ask them to give you just a small pour of each one, otherwise they'll give you a full pour of each which is too much!
The tour guides were amazing! Fun, knowledgeable , and very full of energy. Honestly, they made a better experience than the destination itself.
A great way to see Hierve de Agua! We first stopped at a bakery to try local bread and then drove to the park. You get 3 hours to hike, swim, and eat, which is enough time if you time it right. We liked the free structure, rather than having guided time. However, you have to keep track of time to get back to the meeting point to leave. There are changing rooms and showers and a variety of food stands selling traditional dishes. Afterward we went and learned about mezcal and tasted some varieties. Our group was very lively and fun and the ride back was a mini party! Overall a very fun and solid experience, with fun guides and an easy itinerary.
We had a great time visiting Hierve el Agua with Oaxaca by Locals and our guide Braulio. We enjoyed visiting the bakery, and then we had plenty of time to explore hierve el agua on our own once we got there. The trip to the mezcal distillery was very informative and fun! Highly recommend!
This tour was the best tour ever! Such a great deal for everything you get to do. Braulio, Leon, and Eduardo made the experience so much fun!
This was an amazing trip. Margarita and Carlos were so sweet, fun, hilarious, and overall made the trip amazing. Our guide we found once we got on the mountain, Francisco, was amazing as well, if you meet him, go with him. He was AWESOME. Core memories were created, and I cannot recommend this tour enough!!
This tour is great! You get about 3 hours at Hierve el Agua, which is just the right amount of time, and then you get to taste about 10 different Mezcals at the distillery. Our guide Margarita was knowledgeable, friendly, and funny! Highly recommend.
The tour was excellent and very informative. Hierve de Agua was interesting. The elevation is higher than Oaxaca. Margarita was our tour guide. I learned a lot about Oaxaca and mezcal. I especially enjoyed the mezcal tasting.
Stephanie was an amazing guide that had energy, warmth and great knowledge. The trip was a complete pleasure and I learned, did and saw so much! It was just a perfect day!!
Staff is professional and personable, hierva de agua is stunning and worth it! Complimentary mescal was also a good experience
Estefania’s friendly delivery & detailed instructions helped create a good group vibe. The day progressed as described.
Stephanie was an incredible guide, we learnt so much about Oaxaca and the rest of Mexico. We also made some great friends along the way.
