We booked via viator and we had a great experience! We went for the whole day experience and our two guides - Miguel and Julian - were very nice and gave us plenty of time to take in Hierve el agua, get a cold drink after a needed swim before continuing the schedule of the day. A hike at Yagul, a local dinner in Tecutlan with a privat rug lesson and then directly return to our Airbnb. A lovely way to spend a day in Oaxaca ☀️

Itinerary
Hierve el Agua is a stunning natural phenomenon located 2 hours away from Oaxaca city, in the mountains outside Oaxaca’s Central Valleys. A petrified waterfall with spectacular views across the Sierra, the uniqueness of this place will blow you away. Imagine pools of water that are formed by natural springs from within the mountain, located on a natural shelf overlooking the valley below... Hierve el Agua is almost like a landscape from another planet.
After coming back down the mountain we head for Yagul archaeological site. A rare jewel that sees very little visitors, Yagul is full of wild cactus and agave plants growing among and on the Zapotec ruins. The place has a fascinating history and is incredibly atmospheric, and has featured in many books and films throughout Mexican history.
Nearby is Teotitlan del Valle, a town famous for its tradition of Zapotec weavers, whose designs and styles have become world famous. We will visit a household who acquire their wool only from their own livestock and give us a full tour of their production methods from start to finish. This is a wonderfully refreshing and interactive experience where we gain an understanding of the work and symbolism behind these textiles, with a family who have been weaving for generations. Our lunch is also prepared by the family and we eat inside their home, a real treat of traditional Oaxacan cuisine.
On the road home to Oaxaca, we will stop by Santa Maria del Tule, location of one of the largest and oldest trees in the world. A Moctezuma Cypress, considered to have the widest trunk in the world, this tree is a whole ecosystem in itself whose size is so impressive it dwarfs the church next door. At around 1500 years old, it is a wonder of nature and feels incredible just to be in its presence.

Our driver Jorge was a wealth of knowledge and also from Oaxaca. He was a great storyteller and made us feel at home. Yesenia (Jessie) provided us with so much history and cultural relevance throughout our tour. She allowed us to explore each stop to our liking and answered all 1,000 questions we had. I would highly recommend taking this tour and, if you can, get Jorge and Yesenia! They were an amazing team that allowed us a beautiful day!
This tour is packed with so many amazing sites from around Oaxaca, we enjoyed them all! Loved learning about the culture and meeting with locals from the region. Really heightened our appreciation for the places we visited. Our guides were super fun, friendly, and filled with lots of interesting information. Shout out to Tania and Pablo, hope we meet again! :)
This was the absolute best thing we did in all of Mexico. We had the best day. Mizael was the best guide and Jorge was so helpful setting up the tour. We found the price perfect for the full day of activities and tours. We would do a tour with Mexico Kan tours again!
This is a fabulous tour full of culture , history, great food and beautiful scenery. Lucas, our guide, shared a wealth of knowledge and was pleasant to spend the day with.
Misael was a fantastic guide, full of info and interested in chatting and answering our questions. The tour was a great way to see the sites and I would recommend it to anyone interested in an easy and enjoyable way to experience some highlights of Oaxaca. If you love nature you must visit the tule tree, it is incredible!
I booked this tour because we have a fantastic experience with this company during two trips to Tulum, but this time I was quite disappointed, especially considering the price we paid 330. The tour guide Michael was inattentive, spending most of the car ride playing on his phone, and he only answered our questions when we asked. I expected a brief intro at each stop, but did not happen. Also, when we reached the Hierve el Agua, he did not come in with us due to the legal restrictions, but he only mentioned like one sentence without further explanations when we about to get off the car, which should have been tell us earlier. On the positive side, the driver Isaac was wonderful! He was friendly, always smiling, and made sure the ac is on every time we got into the car. one tip for future travelers, if you’re thinking to buy the weaving products during the lunch stop ( which is held at a family owned weaving house), be cautious. The items are very expensive unless you’re good at bargaining. Overall, I don’t recommend this trip, especially given the price we paid compared with the service they offered.
Nice tour to Hierve el Agua with Miguel as our guide. The ride in the comfortable van was smooth all day, and the pickup was right on time. We enjoyed a breakfast stop at a local spot, which felt authentic and not touristy. The hike to Hierve el Agua with a local guide was a highlight—stunning views! We also loved the stop at the Yagul archaeological site—after visiting more popular spots like Monte Alban, it was amazing to have the place all to ourselves. Learning about the traditions of Zapotec weavers and having lunch prepared by their family in their home was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Miguel offered us mezcal throughout the day and even gifted us some complimentary pastries. What we really appreciated about the company is how it cooperates with the locals and supports the region, respecting its history, culture, and nature. Highly recommend!
Each stop on the tour was unique and memorable. Our guide, Micael, provided cultural insights during the ride, enhancing our understanding of the Zapotec people. This tour surpassed a mere transportation service, offering a seamless and enriching experience. Highly recommended and worth every penny.
Amazing tour! Explored and learnt so much whilst respecting locals at the same time. Highly recommend! - Thank you for having us
Amazing day with a very knowledgeable guide, Tania! Hope to use Mexico Kan tours if I'm ever lucky enough to return to Mexico again
This was the best tour I did over the course of two weeks and 10 Viator tours in Mexico. Mizael, our tour guide, was amazing. We had the best day and saw SO MUCH and also got to eat the most delicious meal. Book this tour!
The sites alone are breathtaking; like nothing you will see anywhere else in the world, but what made this tour so special was the attention to detail our guide gave us. It was all the moments in between that made it feel so authentic. You cannot properly appreciate these places on your own. To truly experience these places you need Jorge’s knowledge and connection to the community. He knows the hidden gems and has all the local intel. He treated us to so many delicious foods and sweets. You will remember what you saw, heard, tasted, and experienced for the rest of your life. This tour is a true treasure.
Jaime was a great guide, very friendly and knowledgeable. I really loved eating lunch prepared by the owner of Corazon de Lana, it was her wool weaving studio where we ate lunch and learned about (and tried ourselves) the weaving of woolen rugs in the area. Jaime showed us all the "animals" you can see with your imagination in El Arbol de Tule. Yagul was great, wonderful ruins and not as well known - we were the only ones there!
Miseal our tour guide was amazing. The landscape was gorgeous & the textile demonstration was fascinating. Miseal went above & beyond to ensure we were comfortable & enjoyed ourselves. Highly recommend.
I rarely bother to write reviews but I wanted to give a shoutout to our guide Misrael who gave us a really enjoyable day. We went to Hierve el agua and Yagun, enjoyed a surprisingly good lunch and Misrael was a great guide - he spoke great English, had heaps of knowledge to share but he was also laidback and knew when we just wanted quiet time to chill. I would totally recommend this tour to anyone.
We had a wonderful experience with Jorge and Ivan! They're extremely professional and we recommend their service to anyone looking for an authentic experience in Oaxaca.
Before coming to Oaxaca I didn’t even know the landscape was so diverse. I admit I should’ve researched it better, but I just wanted to be surprised. In the end I am so glad we stumbled upon this tour company. The guide was amazing and the views.. Oh man the views. Book this tour, you’ll be amazed!
Dagen var rigtig godt struktureret og vi havde tilpas med tid ved hvert stop. Husk badetøj til Hierve el Agua. Hyggeligt stop hos Doña Maria, der viste væve-håndværket. Mizael var en behagelig guide!
Excellent tourist team, the guide really good, all the staff very friendly. The route was very good, on the way we arrived for chocolate with bread so as not to bring an empty stomach, likewise the team brought water, fruit, amaranth bars. The places we visited were spectacular. Without a doubt I recommend them 100% since they were always very well organized and they were quite punctual.
Thank you for this well-organized excursion, which allowed us to discover the true treasures of Oaxaca: the nature (Hierve el agua was simply splendid), the culture and the people, who are incredible and have transmitted to us their rich heritage, which we can only admire . We really enjoyed our time together in contact with nature and the local population. Thank you for this authentic experience, without forgetting our guide Axel, who accompanied us at all times and whose explanations were invaluable throughout the excursion.
Incredible, a route different from the other routes offered, the incredible guide. The views are beautiful, the hike in Hierve el Agua is very satisfying, the water is delicious for swimming, the route is beautiful, snacks included and the food was the best of all.
The hike to Hierve el Agua, not far from the Mixtec town and the impressive landscapes of Oaxaca, with mountains, cacti and agaves as far as the eye can see, will be etched in my mind forever: I felt like I was on another planet, it was! a real change of scenery! In addition, we were able to enjoy these landscapes in a small group, with our guide Neo who was more than up to the task, making the experience magical and giving us a quality introduction to the culture of the Zapotecs. We saw a lot during the day: boil water, the archaeological zone of Yagul, Teotitlan Del Valle, Santa Maria Del tule... I was left speechless throughout: thank you Mexico Kan tour for this excursion that I will never forget.
We loved this tour, well organized and rich in activities and learning. The walk to Hierve al agua was incredible, especially since we arrived early which saved us from the horde of tourists and allowed us to observe the agaves and cacti as far as the eye could see... Moreover, I particularly loved the local meal followed by the visit to the Zapotec textile studio where we were able to learn weaving techniques and see the different processes at the source.
The excursion was perfectly organized: the guide, Maria, was pleasant and showed us all the particularities of this extraordinary region. The itinerary was very relevant: starting at Hierve el agua in the morning to enjoy this natural phenomenon without the horde of tourists was very pleasant and calming. Afterwards, Yagul and its landscapes of cacti and agaves as far as the eye can see will be etched in my mind when I think about this region and, more generally, the magnificent country that is Mexico. Furthermore, the food that a Oaxacan family prepared for us was incredible, a true moment of conviviality and sharing... I loved it! Finally, to finish on a high note, we finished the itinerary in Santa María del Tule to admire the largest and oldest trees in the world: an inexplicable and magical moment. Thank you México Kan Tours for reminding us that nature is a jewel that must be preserved at all costs
“We will never forget this spectacle that nature offered us during this excursion with our guide Axel: we observed the Hierve al agua phenomenon, being able to enjoy this moment alone with our group while we listened to the guide tell us more about the place. We also saw Yagul, a magnificent place surrounded by cacti and agaves so typical of Mexico and Oaxaca. In addition, the food was delicious, which allowed us to make the most of our subsequent visit to the Zapotec textile workshop. In short, a real dream.”
