An amazing food market tour with Elizabeth! Informative, diverse, fun and delicious ( even the grasshopper!) Very different from previous food tours - we loved every minute!

A must-do tour while in Oaxaca, the foodie capital of Mexico. Alicia was an excellent tour guide, with exceptional communication, both before the tour as well as during it. She taught us so much about the food we were trying as well as life in Oaxaca. This tour is incredibly generous with tastings throughout the two markets plus a meal to finish off. We were absolutely stuffed so definitely didn’t need dinner later that day. Highly recommend!
Excellent tour with a great range of food to try throughout. Our guide was a huge help in steering us towards other places for meals after.
Excellent information about food, culture and history of Oaxaca. So many samples of food, I couldn’t eat dinner!
terrific guided tour of some of the traditional market sites. mole and mezcal tasting topped off with a meal that was very tasty. good way to experience the market and know where you want to spend more time. the street food we experienced was the very best of the eating experiences!!!!
What a great food and market tour! Elizabeth knows so much and made everything so easy. We tasted our way around two markets and tried things we’d never even heard of. I would recommend Oaxaca by Locals to anyone and everyone.
Coyote was an amazing guide who took into consideration our one dairy intolerant family member and ensured we got to see and taste the best parts of both big markets. There was the most delicious and nutritious drinks, fruit and bbq meats that we may never have considered eating. Thank you Coyote for your guidance and great communication.
Learned way more than expected, ate better food than expected, had more fun than expected. Coyote a great guide and perfect companion for us all. Great experience
As people who had not visited the region before, we felt a little overwhelmed navigating food scene here. This experience is an excellent crash course, and our guide was super friendly and enrhisiastic about answering all our questions about this beautiful and complex city. All of the food was excellent, and lives up to reputation!
This was such a great tour to take on our first day in Oaxaca. Our guide, Alicia, knows all the vendors and has it set up so you can sample everything. We learned about all the local specialties, including tejate, mescal, different types of moles and chiles, sausages, Oaxacan cheese, pink orchata, grasshoppers and worms, and then you sit down for a big lunch of grilled meats, tamales, chile relleno, and chicken mole tlayuda. Do not plan to eat dinner that day.
Great tour of the markets of Oaxaca with interesting and engaging stories about different local products and delicacies
Would give guide more stars if possible. We tasted local foods and drinks with interesting stories of their origins. Also shared what Day of the Dead meant to families and how they remember their loved in different personal ways. Made it so much more personal.
Fun way to spend an afternoon in Oaxaca! Knowledgeable guide and good food. Small group made the time go quickly!
Knowledgeable guide, good introduction to Oaxaca food, history, and markets. Be prepared to walk a bit.
One of my favourite tours in Oaxaca. The guide was very friendly and made me feel welcome to the country. All the food I tried was tasty. Thankyou
Myself and my husband had the most incredible experience with Alicia during our stay in Oaxaca. Alicia, who speaks excellent English, has a wealth of knowledge around food as well as historical and cultural information. We throughly enjoyed going through the markets with her, sampling food along the way before finally sitting down to a meal together. This gave us the confidence to try new foods and to have the know how when ordering on the street or in the markets, despite our very poor Spanish! Our only regret was that we didn’t do this tour on our first day.
My wife and I had a wonderful time! Alicia was a great leader and we learned much. What a great experience and would highly recommend!!
Definitely recommend this tour if you’re wanting to get your bearings of the city and where to eat and shop. Our guide Alicia was great - engaging, helpful and kind. We were able to get a good sense of the main types of dishes they have here, as well as mezcal and some bakery sweets ! Was definitely full after a few hours of eating so come hungry! We went to two different markets and they have everything - from produce, a butchery, juice bars, clothes, jewelry, and a bunch of food stalls. Great way to start off my trip here, will definitely come back to the markets for authentic cheap eats, a drink or some souvenirs. Ask for Alicia if you can - she was outstanding!
We had a wonderful time touring the markets with Alicia. She was friendly and knowledgeable and an excellent guide! Highly recommend for a fun way to explore the markets, learn about the cuisine and culture of Oaxaca!
Our tour guide Elizabeth was so knowledgeable and explained both markets, traditions and food. We tasted a very nice variety, learned a lot. She also recommended we visit the are next to church of Soledad to have some of the best nieve. We went there in the evening and really loved it so thank you so much for that recommendation, we went there again last night and we each ordered an even bigger size of nieve.
Coyote was an amazing Guide. Had fun, the Best Food and learnt some real history about oaxaca ;) would totally recommmend
Coyote has an in depth knowledge of Oaxaca foods and markets and way more. He even likes corona. Great chap to spend the time with.
Our guide was excellent. She used to be a teacher so she was clear and engaging. We took this tour on our first day in Oaxaca and it was so nice to have someone show us the basics of the food, as it’s very different from other parts of Mexico. We would definitely recommend this company. Our guide handled buying all the food, which was nice too. It starts out light with drinks and small tastes but gradually you eat more and more and near the end there’s a large meal. We were so full!
Elizabeth took us into the Oaxaca food world! She is an amazing host with great taste. Her English is on point. If you are into food and are open to learn a bit more about the life in Oaxaca and want a fun afternoon; go on this tour!
Alicia was an excellent guide, helped answer all our food questions and we tasted many many things. The market tour was great to do early in the trip so you can then shop knowing what is what. I would recommend to just taste the juice because drinking the whole thing you'll be too full for all the food yet to come.
Elizabeth was a super guide. She excelled at sharing the market with us and explaining the culture and food of Oaxaca. Answered our questions and there was so much to eat.
Elizabeth was very knowledgeable and we were able to try many different things. The tour is a good length as well- it’s not an all day activity but not too short either.
Great experience and an even greater guide! Elizabeth was awesome! She explained the foods and the regions and ordered our food for us in the market. If you sign up for this tour, ask for Elizabeth. We highly recommend her!
The guide was easy to understand and friendly. The meetup instructions were confusing and she was late. The food was not worth eating. Therefore the tour was overpriced.
Coyote was a great and knowledgeable guide! He shared his love of the diversity of the food of the regions of Oaxaca with us. He tailored to tour towards our questions and accommodating a toddler. Totally worth it!
What an amazing experience! So wonderful to have Elizabeth as our guide. She not only shared with us the best of Oaxacan street foid, but told us so much about the culture of Oaxaca and Oaxacan food. I learned so much it was much easier to order at the restaurants after this tour.
The food, the knowledge, the atmosphere! Amazing. Elizabeth was excellent with her explanations and great personality.
It was a good start to learn about the local cuisine. We learned about different types of Mole, Mezcal, tejate and bread. A good for the trip
Elizabeth is very knowledgeable. I recommend this tour if you want to know more about the local culture, story and of course, food :)
Wow, what a cool experience. Our tour guide, Elizabeth, was patient and very knowledgeable as a true local. Answered all our questions and was easy to get along with. Tour included a stops at two markets that were next to each other. Tried their tejate, cheese, meat sausages, some main dishes, and some pastries. Would definitely recommend this tour and this guide.
Coyote was a friendly and knowledgeable guide who took us to all of his favorite vendors. We tasted different foods and beverages along the way. The lunch at the end was huge. Go hungry!
We enjoyed a wonderful, and informative, mercado tour with Coyote today. He’s a good guide and an interesting human. Because our group was very small, we were able to discuss more than just food and the market. The food and the market were the main thing, though, and we were thoroughly satiated, food wise and tour wise, when we parted ways. Recommend 👍🏽👍🏽
Our tour guide was very sweet and knowledgeable. Tasting local cheese and mezcal was especially interesting. The larger meal at the end was delicious with a variety of local items like cecina, chorizo, tlayudos. The walk to the market is 15-20 minutes so be prepared for that. I recommend the tour have an option of meeting at the market.
I took the food/markets tour with Oaxaca by Locals that visited the Benito Juarez and 20 de Noviembre markets. My tour guide Coyote was absolutely incredible. It was just me on the tour so i think I got pretty lucky in that regard. Coyote was super friendly, extremely knowledgeable and made the tour easy to follow and understand. This is a must do if you’ve got limited time in Oaxaca and want to sample some of the local specialties. Highly recommend this tour.
OK without being wonderful. Plenty of food and well explained but it is a long walk from the booking office/meeting place to the markets on a very hot day. A meeting place close to the markets where the tour actually is would be much preferred
Our guide Elizabeth was friendly, enthusiastic and well informed. The food was delicious, the markets authentic, fascinating and vibrant. It was great to go to markets serving the local but catered for tourists too. I highly recommend this tour.
Elizabeth was our guide. She shared a lot of interesting information. She was personable and friendly. We learnt so much about Mexican food and Mexican way of life. The food was much more than we could eat and we tried foods that we would not have eaten otherwise. Elizabeth also helped us to choose mole and Mexican snacks to take back home. It was fun exploring the markets with a local.
The tour was fantastic! I learned so much historical and cultural background behind the food and Oaxaca more generally. The tour guide was knowledgable and great all around.
Our tour guide Elizabeth was superb. She provided great historical insight, provided authentic food tasting, tetaye, mezcal, Oaxaca quesillo and ended w/local desserts. Everything was great, this tour is worth it!
This wasn’t bad but it also wasn’t great, a bigger tour of the markets would have been good and more food would have been better. When I went some of the stalls were closed and the last meal at the end didn’t quite hit the level of food that I had experiences else where in Oaxaca. I think for the price of this tour it should never been better.
The tour itself was great! Alicia was wonderful, explained things well. Tried cheeses, chocolate, mole paste, chorizo, grass hoppers and more. The market was crowded so best to go with a guide. One issue- the starting point was far from the market. Suggest a closer meeting place
We did this tour to get an introduction to Oaxacan food and a roadmap to navigate the markets. We got all that and more! Elizabeth was an excellent guide! She's from Oaxaca and very knowledgeable about the food, customs and history of the area. I am a chef, and I was amazed at the different flavors I was introduced to at the market! From fresh quesillo to the carne asadas and the chapulines, everything was delicious and a new, exciting culinary experience. And, we learned a lot about the history, ingredients and cultural significance behind these foods at the same time. We are so glad we went on this tour! Highly recommend, especially if it's your first day in Oaxaca!
The tour guide was pleasant and the food we ate tasted good, however we found it a little odd that we booked a Food Market tour and the guide is asking us what we’d like to choose rather than helping us discover new things. We were expecting to be more guided considering the price of the tour and the inexpensive options that were available at the market. Some parts of the tour were free samples and when we asked to try something else, it was suggested we share with others on the tour since it was a large dish. Overall, nice to meet a local but we didn’t learn much or get our moneys worth.
Our guides were very knowledgeable and friendly! They made sure to interact with everyone in our group and kept us engaged with history, culture and delicious food! Highly recommend!
Elizabeth was a great tour guide! We learned a lot about Oaxacan history, culture, and food. After taking the tour we felt very comfortable ordering and shopping for food and drinks at the markets by ourselves. Highly recommend this tour!
