Nice dive with a guide experiences in driving on trusting mountain roads that are not well maintained in places. 5th generation family business in growing organic coffee. We had a hands on experience picking, washing the beans and saw many other tress and plants like guanacaste trees, cinnamon trees, banana trees along with ginger plants. A traditional meal was available for an extra cost of $300 pesos in added to the tour coast of $1,200 and the coffee was available to buy at the end. Nice and different change of scenery and views at three different levels of elevation.

The tour with Gustavo was excellent! It was fun and informative. He was very accommodating and kind, and we learned a lot from him. We would definitely recommend this tour to others wanting to see the beauty of the area and learn about the history and current coffee production. Also - Pablo and his family were amazing at the coffee shop and plantation! It was wonderful to have a home cooked meal and enjoy the gorgeous scenery.
We spent the day with Hector for this tour. We don’t usually do organized tours so was unsure what to expect. We had the best day! Hector was amazing - funny - knowledgeable - kind - we got picked up at our hotel on time, made some stops in the way to the coffee plantation - had some coffee and cookies along the way at cafe suprema - met up with another group at the plantation where Pablo and “Latte” took us on a great tour of the plantation. We learned a lot and had fun. The. We the. head back to cafe suprema where we enjoyed an amazing chicken and pasta lunch, more offer, juice and mezcal. After a little shopping we head back down the mountain! Hector really made the day great. Highly recommend! REALLY
We had a wonderful trip with Hector for 3 Levels of Huatulco. Having visited the area many times, we had yet to visit Santa Maria Huatulco or a coffee farm. It was really interesting. We are thankful that they chose a small, organic farm. Hector was a very friendly, knowledgeable guide. We look forward to doing other tours with him.
We had a fantastic private tour (at no extra cost) led by Archie from Homietours. He was very knowledgeable about the town and area and connected us to a good coffee vendor in Pluma Hidalgo. He made a short video as we went so we had a nice memento in the end. Archie grew up locally and helped us understand how the area evolved since the 90s. Really excellent tour group and a fun day long experience
The tour was fun to learn about the ways that they create and process coffee, and in general the eco culture of that area of Mexico, both our tour guide and the plantation owners were great !
Hector was an amazing guide. So knowledgeable about everything & so eager to take care of us in every way to ensure we had the best experience. Tour of coffee plantation exceeded our expectations. Family owned business, rich with tradition & hospitality. Tastings were great, food offered for lunch was perfect. Bring pesos as you will need to purchase the meal.
Great experience ! So informative and such a beautiful area. So nice to get up into the mountains. It is a long day. The lunch that is offered (you pay extra) is a nice end to the tour but the food was very bland. Everyone was very kind and our driver,Hector, was very informative.
Vincent was a fun, knowledgeable and easy to understand tour guide. Pablo, owner of plantation, gave us a great tour of all phases of growing and then processing coffee. Was great to see and visit some interior towns and learn a bit about economy of the area.
Excellent all around! Very educational. Cultural depth. Wonderful people. Will never forget the experience.
Thoroughly enjoyed the entire experience…it was a full day! The coffee plantation was amazing - they are passionate about their craft. Hector was our tour guide and he was very informative, a good driver (road up the mountain is quite crazy). The weather was cooler in the mountains but shorts and a t-shirt are perfect. We highly recommend this tour!
We enjoyed this outing very much. Hector is a great tour guide, and very careful driver on roads I’m not sure I would like to drive myself. At the coffee plantation, Pablo gave us a very detailed tour of his family’s enterprise and introduced us to the best coffee we’ve ever had. Pablo’s mom cooked a traditional Oaxaca lunch - very delicious. Well worth it!
Experiencing the three Levels of Huatulco was a truly interesting and informative Mexican Experience. Hector, our driver, was a very personable and informative guide. As wel, Pablo, our guide at the coffee plantation, expertly showed us through the processes of growing, harvesting and preparing the coffee beans. We highly recommend this tour to everyone.
Comfortable walking shoes & clothing are necessary. A wood-fired home-cooked traditional meal is not included, but provided. This long day began with ontime pickup at our acommodation. Hector was sociable & informative as we travelled along. His careful competence was appreciated as we were enthralled by the views ascending to the mountain community. We were greeted by Pablo, the 5th generation farmer of this farm, who provided an in-depth introduction to the many steps in producing organic artesional coffee. His knowledge & presentation were comprehensive. Our drive back to our accomodation was quiet, as we were all rather quite tired after a full day The experience was thoroughly enjoyed by us. Latte was an absolute delight.
Hector is a skilled driver & we felt totally safe & comfortable as he drove through beautiful scenery & manoeuvred around some interesting roads getting to the coffee farm located in higher altitudes. Pablo’s comprehensive tour of his fourth generation family coffee farm gave us a greater understanding & appreciation of the intense labour required to produce a fine cup of coffee. Very worthwhile trip! Cecilia & Tom
A great day. Our guide and driver Hector was knowledgeable, attentive and a careful driver. Pablo explained the whole coffee process extremely thoroughly. It was fascinating! He’s mother’s muffins and lunch were also very delicious and the coffee was of course excellent! I highly recommend this excursion!
A wonderful day. Our driver Hector was excellent. Our first stop was an overlook of Santa Cruz and a brief history of the area, we had another brief stop in the town of Santa Maria to see the church and use the bathroom then we were on our way to Pluma Hidalgo. It was a beautiful drive, bit of a hairy road in spots. We walked the suspension bridge and had our picture taken at the Pluma Hidalgo sign. The village is so beautiful at the top of the mountains. The tour through the coffee plantation is fun and very informative as the process of coffee is explained. Our guide at the plantation was excellent as well. It was followed by lunch (which was a bit pricey) and an opportunity to buy coffee and chocolate grown on the farm. All in all it was a great day and I would definitely recommend this tour
Hector, our tour guide, was very knowledgeable, helpful & kind. We were pleasantly surprised what we learned of the region and the independent coffee industry. Awesome tour choice!!
My wife and I were met promptly by our driver and personal guide, Emmanuel. The transportation was clean and comfortable. Emmanuel was considerate to our personal needs, as I have mobility issues. After a formal introduction he showed himself to be very knowledgeable, friendly and kind. We felt totally safe with his driving abilities and he exhibited strong relationships with the local community, making our experience authentic and personal. His respect for the community, culture and environment was heartwarming. The tour itself was educational and we learned so much about the coffee making history and process in the region. The hospitality of the coffee plantation owner and his family was exceptional. We would recommend this tour to anyone who is interested in the culture and history of this region
This tour, led by Alberto and Homietours is a must do! The depth of knowledge of history, biology and Mexican society adds so much depth to this tour. Learning how this area grew from a sea level fishing village to the broad based economy of today is a captivating story best told by a passionate local. Learning how the coffee economy developed and grew is very interesting. Meeting local entrepreneurs and learning their history is amazing. Don't miss this one!
Great experience with Hector! Felt like we were with family. Great conversation in Spanish and English and we learned a lot about the area and coffee! Great day- would highly recommend- thank you Hector!
Our knowledgeable guide taught us about the precolonial, colonial, and current histories of Huatulco, Santa Maria, Pluma Hidalgo, and Oaxaca. From experiencing the traditional tortilla making experience in Santa Maria, to travelling up the scenic mountains, to walking through the streets of Pluma Hidalgo and touring the coffee plantation and learning about the botany of the area and the process of producing great coffee. This was a full day for us and worth every minute of our precious vacation time.
Hugo was an amazing tour guide. He was very knowledgeable and explained all kinds of history of Huatulco. The experience at the coffee plantation was incredible, and the views were breathtaking. This isa must do with Hugo if you are visiting Huatulco!
This was an amazing day! We cannot say enough good things about it. The tour guide, Hugo, was knowledgeable and made it fun and easy going. The family that welcomed us to the plantation was lovely and the lunch was the best food I’ve had in Mexico. I recommend wearing sneakers for this tour. If you are thinking of going, do it, it is worth every penny, and more!
What a great tour. Such great information. Hugo is very knowledgeable about the coffee industry. Thank you so much! ❤️❤️❤️
Wonderful trip, I loved every minute of it! I would highly recommend this tour to anyone that wants to explore the Oaxaca mountains a little bit

Review Hugo was an excellent guide who picked us up and dropped us off at our Airbnb. He has a wealth of knowledge of plants n the geography of the region. A very careful driver and spoke more than just about coffee on the way there and back. When we arrived, first had a leisurely coffee at the owner’s home. Next we went to the plantation where the organic coffee is grown. We highly recommend him to be your guide.
Wonderful value for a private tour that provide Huatulco history, flora information, great views and the tour of the coffee plantation. Also visits to Mexican villages. Excellent guide. Highly recommended.
Great fun, very informative , wonderful coffee! Enjoy the fresh mountain air and the great views along the way.
This was an amazing tour for our family of three, including a teenager! Hugo was a great tour guide and picked us up promptly from our hotel in the morning. We got to see some of Huatulco and hear some of the town history, see a historic church in the town of Santa Maria, and spent the majority of our day in Pluma Hidalgo touring the coffee farm. Don Pablo, the owner of the coffee farm, was so hospitable. We enjoyed an amazing home cooked lunch, got to sample the coffee and the mezcal, and see the process for farming, harvesting and roasting the coffee beans there. Pluma Hidalgo is beautiful and our tour guide Hugo was able to tell us so much about the entire region. After we were done in Pluma Hidalgo, Hugo was able to transport us to our next lodging in Puerto Escondido instead of Huatulco for an extra fee. It was a great trip and very relaxing and fun for our family. We could tell that Hugo was passionate and very knowledgeable about Oaxaca, and we get very safe and cared for the whole time. 10/10 would recommend! It was one of the highlights of our trip.
Amazing, was a great tour! Our guide Antonio was professional, engaging, intelligent, insightful. Also very respectful of local culture and traditions. This was the very best introduction for us--all of our questions were answered thoughtfully and without prejudice. We wanted an authentic experience, and this tour hit it in all the right places for us.
We booked two tours with Homietours - the 3 Levels of Huatulco and the Waterfalls. Both tours were amazing (the landscapes and the coffee - just wonderful) - our guide Javier was very knowledgable about the region and took so much time for us! We enjoyed both trips a lot and can only recommend to book a tour with this operator. We hope to come back again soon and do another tour with them.
Edgar was an amazing guide. He was casual, friendly and an open book. We enjoyed his down-to-earth approach and willingness to take his time. He was especially careful on the winding mountain roads. His driving skills are impeccable-- probably the best driver we have ever been in a car with in a foreign country. The mountain village and coffee growing plantation were absolutely beautiful and unique. It definitely felt like we were going beyond the typical tourist hub and getting to see a stunning side of Mexico that most tourists never get to see. Also, the day was nicely paced. We left around 9am right from our rented condo, picked up another couple, had a driving tour of the town of Santa Maria Huatolco, started up the winding mountain road, stopped at a coffee plantation/peaceful oasis-like mini-resort with a museum-type space, walked around surveying and learning about local fauna and coffee plants, relaxed in hammocks overlooking the vast mountain ranges, ate a simple, freshly prepared lunch, then drove a few mins further into a tiny mountaintop village to taste and purchase coffee beans and see an old church, and were delivered back to our rented condo around 3pm. Our guide offered to stop at a Mezcal factory where we could see how if it made but nobody in our group desired to make another stop. It was a generous option though. Overall, we highly recommend Edgar and this tour!! You won't regret taking a day to go "off the beaten path"!
We would like to thank Javier Gomez for the great time and the really good experience we had during this tour, First we appreciated that the tour wasn’t cancel even if the other couples canceled, so we were lucky to get a private tour with our guide, Javier. He is really a passionate person who was able to provide a lot of history details during the Santa Maria town visit and even during the 1.5h one way drive which we loved. We had great conversation about the environment and the Oaxaca culture, very interesting. Second, Arriving to pluma hidalgo, Javier took the time to explain all the coffee process from the seed to the drink, making sure we understood all the steps and take advantage to be in the plantation to show the traditional process used but also some special trees such as banana trees, canela tree, vanilla, etc. During this tour, he “proposed” a lunch with the local family, it was really great experience and the food was typical Oaxaca tamales, but the point too improve was this lunch was pretty expensive for just tamales. In conclusion, we highly recommend to take this tour with Javier as a great guide. You learn a lot with him. Just the surprise aspect of the lunch was more expensive than what we expected.
Javier was our guide. There were five guests, two Spanish speakers and three English speakers. Javier did a good job providing the information in both languages. He picked us up on time and we set off for Santa Maria Huatulco where we visited a beautiful church and a municipal building with a large mural depicting the history of the region. Then it was time to begin the trip up into the mountains to reach Pluma Hidalgo. The road was damaged in recent years by a hurricane and resulting landslide, and is currently under repair. Javier was a careful driver and his van was up to the challenge of the steep and winding road. We reached Pluma which is a picturesque town of about 5000 people. Tuk-tuks were everywhere! Just on the edge of town was the hillside coffee plantation owned and operated by Pablo and his family. Pablo is a young man with impeccable English, and he and Javier walked us through the plantation and taught us the life cycle of the coffee plant. Then it was time to visit Pablo’s home/cafe where we tasted their coffee and enjoyed delicious snacks made right then and there by his mother. It was a very relaxing visit, with lots of time to enjoy the conversation and refreshments, and purchase ground or whole bean coffee to take home. We then piled back into the van and Javier took us back down the mountain and back to our hotel by late afternoon.
Fantastic day with our guide, Javier. It ended up being a private tour in his very comfortable and clean vehicle. He added local stops to provide us more history of the region, giving us more context to appreciate this beautiful area. And the coffee plantation he chose to show us was excellent: local, friendly and meaningful! Pablo and his family gave us a tour of their plantation, made us a local lunch and furnished us with us a coffee tasting - very smooth and delicious. Overall fabulous way to spend a day and I recommend Javier and Pablo to anyone who wants to spend some time with them!
Alberto from Homietours does the 3 Levels of Huatulco tour for more than 15 years. His enthusiasm shows and his knowledge is phenomenal, especially everything plant related, as he has a background in biology. The first stop (1st level at sea level) of the tour is at a Vista point overlooking Santa Cruz Bay and the harbor. Here, Alberto explained the Huatulco National Park and the restrictions it puts on the land development in Huatulco. The next stop (2nd level at 300m) is at the Zocalo in Santa Maria Huatulco. Here you will visit the central plaza, the church (closed on Mondays) and City Hall where Alberto will explain a beautiful mural. The 3rd level of Huatulco at 1500m has multiple stops. First, Alberto will pick and peel a coffee berry to expose the beans, then you will see how they are dried. Next is a stop at a land parcel that Alberto owns and where he used to roast coffee beans. The land and his oven were damaged during the last hurricane and he is rebuilding it. This part of the tour involves hiking down a short but steep and narrow dirt path. If you can't do this, then you can stay back. During the hike, Alberto's biology background comes to shine when he shows young and not yet mature plants of ginger, avocado, grapefruit, licorice, lemongrass, banana, and vanilla that he has planted and he invites you to smell their leaves. The views of the mountains from here are fantastic. The next stop is at the Zocalo in Pluma Hidalgo, where the famous Pluma Hidalgo letters are. There, he will bring you to one of the roasters, where you can see the roasting equipment and learn how the different roasting levels influence the color and flavor of the beans. And you will understand why people in Oaxaca prefer mid-level roasted beans over the dark-roasted beens that we consume in the US. I have come to think of it as a medium vs a well-done steak. Of course, a free tasting of the mid-level roasted and ground coffee is included and you can buy coffee beans or ground coffee. The last stop will be at the famous Finca Don Gabriel where you can eat a late lunch. There is a small exhibit room and the views from here on the mountains and the ocean on the horizon are breathtaking. Alberto is very communicative, knowledgeable and speaks excellent English. I had booked a group tour, but as another couple had canceled last minute due to illness, Alberto honored our reservation and gave us a private tour for the agreed-upon price. Our tour took about 7h and we were very happy with it and strongly recommend Alberto at Homietours. You can book a tour via his homepage or Viator. I contacted him via his homepage and he always responded within a few hours. Definitely 5 stars.
This tour was the highlight of our recent trip to Huatulco. Alberto was a phenomenal guide and provided tons of insight and interesting facts not only about the towns we visited but about all the flora and fauna of the area. We went to Santa Maria first and visited the government building, and a beautiful church that was still decorated for the Celebration of Our Lady of Guadalupe. We got to learn about all different kinds of plants native to Mexico, and plans that were native to other areas but the story about how they got to Mexico! He took us for a hike on his private trail and pointed out all kinds of plants that are predecessors to modern plants we know today (like licorice, lemongrass, anise, etc). After the hike we went into Pluma Hidalgo and got to visit a coffee roasterie. Alberto is friends with the owner so it was a very personal experience! We learned all about how coffee goes from growing on a bush to the caffeinated drink we all love. We got to try some freshly ground coffee and a lot of other products that the roasters make the beans into. We had the opportunity to buy coffee beans and other products. (We packed half a suitcase full!) He then showed us around Pluma Hidalgo a little more and drove up to the mountaintop to a phenomenal restaurant that overlooks the start of the Sierra Madre mountains and the ocean. The views were breathtaking, the coffee was phenomenal, and the guide was second to none. Would 1000% recommend this trip to anyone interested in learning about the rich culture of this area of Oaxaca, and trying some new foods!
This tour is really good value for the money. Alberto picked us up in his A/C van in time for a 9:00am start and we drove out to Santa Maria Huatulco, then on up into the cloud forest in the mountains. He dropped us off again at our place late afternoon. We saw beautiful views of the coastline below, had a super lunch at a restaurant with gorgeous views, peppers roasting on a fire outside. We saw vanilla and coffee growing. Alberto offered tastes and smells of native plants on a small plot of land he owns. He is university educated, speaks perfect English, is interested and interesting. Loved the tour. A highlight and a nice way to catch some cooler Sierra Madre air and learn something about Oaxaca.
If you love coffee and Mexican culture or want to learn about it at all, take this tour. You won't be disappointed. Our tour guide, Manuel, spoke goid English and was full of knowledge concerning the places we went. The route on the website appeared as if you only saw the coffee plantation but there were a couple of other stops as well. Very fun and educational!
Very knowledgeable and friendly guide. They took us to various local places and showed us gorgeous views
An average experience compared to others on Viator. I think Hugo arrived asleep and then we went to a food cart and a restroom (for him). Hugo is very friendly and somewhat knowledgeable. It’s just we’ve experienced much better.
Our guide and driver, Ricardo, was a joy to be with. The tour included a village in the mountains where we were able to watch and try out hand at making tortilla's and then sample them as well as walk through a non tourist trap market place. Next we were taken higher in the mountains to a hotel/restaurant that was also a coffee plantation where we had a lunch with fantastic views of the mountain side and took a walk through the area where the coffee plants were growing. Finally we went to a mountain town and stopped at a the shop of a coffee grower and sampled their product. The tour consisted of two couples from the cruise ship and Richardo. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone wanting to see the non beach area of Huatulco.
An experience everyone should enjoy: a comprehensive tour of three areas: Santa Maria, a coffee plantation site, and sampling coffee in the town close by. Richard I, our guide and driver was most congenial, pleasant, informative, and a Grm! I highly recommend the tour! There were two couples with Ricardo.
Seeing the micro climate. Interacting with the locals and seeing their culture. It was value for what we paid.
My girlfriend and I went on an amazing tour up into the mountains to see a different part of the area. It was just the two of us and Hugo was our guide. Hugo was awesome....knew so much about the area, including the flora and fauna, and was so nice and very articulate. We saw small villages and a coffee plantation and learned a lot about growing and harvesting coffee, and also learned a lot about other plants and animals of the area, like vanilla. Also went for a great lunch at restaurant up in the hills. would absolutely recommend this tour to everyone, and feel fortunate if you get Hugo as your guide.
Our group of 8 had a wonderful 3 level tour that finished with the coffee plantation tour. I don't normally drink coffee, but learning about the process was enlightening and the coffee tasted great. Our guide, Alberto, demonstrated his passion for ecology and sustainability. He was very informative about the history of the area and shared his love of the culture. He showed us many things that are probably not on other tours. His enthusiasm was delightful.
As a coffee lover I could not be happier with my tour with Emanuel who is extremely knowledgeable about the region. It was a wonderful day and the coffee is spectacular.
A must do! Alberto our guide is certified and biologist by background. He is very proud to explain the biodiversity of Huatulco and how this world class gourmet coffee comes to be. And he is supporting the local people by bringing you to Doña Alfonsina who plants, grows, picks, and roasts this coffee. Unlike any other experience. The Sierra Madre setting is unbelievable and the coffee out of this world. So happy to have met these people and see a glimpse into their artesanal work and passions. The breakfast option after the coffee plantation tour was also stellar! Muchas gracias!!!!
