Basically, it's just like a taxi although we're given a limo which is cool. However, there's no guide. The driver just brought us to various points of interest. The pick up arrangement was a bit messy. We had to look for the car for quite a while.

You’ll be in a personal vehicle with other tourists so it could be “close”. Our tour guide, Ahmed, was very good. The views from the lighthouse and cliffs were breathtaking! We were in off-season for the fortress but still plenty to see.
Our small group had an incredible day touring Fort Louisbourg, all thanks to our fantastic guide, Jesse. From start to finish, he tailored the entire experience to fit our needs perfectly. Here is why we highly recommend him: • Excellent Driver & Host: Jesse was very polite, accommodating, and a highly skilled, safe driver. • The Perfect Pace: He let us wander and explore at our own comfortable pace, yet seamlessly guided us right to the most picturesque views and locations of deep historical significance. • Knowledgeable & Engaging: His English is excellent and very easy to understand. He speaks with a wonderful accent that adds to the charm of the tour. • Culturally Connected: What we loved most was how deeply he has embraced the local culture and history. Instead of just reciting facts, he spoke with genuine pride, saying things like, "We established this..." which made the history feel truly alive and personal. If you are looking for an informative, accommodating, and culturally immersive tour of Louisbourg, ask for Jesse!
I have mixed feelings about this tour. Overall we did see wonderful sites, especially the Louisbourg Fortress which is a must see. We also made a stop at a beautiful lighthouse where our driver was very good about helping us with photos. However, I should emphasize that we had a driver, not a guide. He spoke very little to us. Also, the car provided for 6 adults was too small. We were really packed into a smallish SUV. In sum, we saw interesting sites, but we learned nothing about the area from our driver.
The Fortress and the lightouse were great to discover and see. The guide was interesting. It would have been nice to do the trip on a minivan.
Although there were several tour guides from City Heart Tours outside the port area for our cruise ship, ours was not there. One of the other guides called and our guide eventually showed up with another couple from another cruise ship already in his small sedan. Three of us were crammed in the back seat making it uncomfortable. We did not see several things that were on the itinerary such as the Big Fiddle, and Albert Bridge. The things it said we would pass by such as 2 churches and a park, our guide barely slowed down. We had time at one light house and the Louisbourg Fort. Some of the exhibits at the fort were already closed for the season. Our guide was from India and had learned the script about the places we went but it was not the same experience as we had with guides that had lived in the area we were visiting for a long time.
Great tour with Suri! Highly recommend! He was very enthusiastic and knowledgeable. We had time for a tour of the city, and loved the lighthouse! Just gorgeous! Suri gave us a personal tour of the fortress and we loved every second!! Thanks for a fun day!
I would strongly caution cruise passengers against booking with City Heart Tours in Sydney, Nova Scotia. TERRIBLE experience. The evening before our excursion, the company texted asking if we would change our tour time and squeeze five adults, including the driver, into a Toyota Camry. We declined. The next morning, our cruise ship was unable to dock in Sydney due to weather. We had absolutely no control over this decision and obviously couldn’t take the tour. City Heart Tours refused to refund our $200, claiming they had already committed their vehicles, guides, and expenses. Funny, considering they were still rearranging passengers and transportation the night before! Viator was no help either, confirming that the operator wouldn’t authorize a refund. Meanwhile, passengers who booked excursions through the cruise line received full refunds. I deliberately booked with a local operator to support a small business. Lesson learned. I’ve since canceled my remaining Trip Advisor booked Viator excursions and rebooked through the cruise line. We didn’t cancel. Our ship couldn’t dock. We received no tour and lost $200. Cruise passengers, consider yourselves warned. Ask about missed-port refunds before booking. City Heart Tours? The name couldn’t be more ironic.
Excellent day trip with Vishal as our driver and guide. He is very enthusiastic and we felt well taken care of throughout. Originally I signed up thinking this was going to be another big bus tour with a tight schedule, but it's actually a small group private tour in a comfortable sedan. You can set your own pace and explore the whole town of Louisbourg as much as you want, just let your guide know if you need anything.
Was a taxi. And not clean. Driver didn’t speak much English. Pickup point was not clearly communicated.
A really enjoyable tour . The guide was easy to find when we left our cruise ship , we were ready to leave in a fast and efficient manner . Our guide Suri was polite, pleasant , informative . All was explained very well , we really had a lovely day out. I would recommend this tour to other cruise passengers .
Beautiful scenery. Interesting stops. Knowledgeable guide. Small group. Lots of time to engage with historical sites.
Great time learning about the area with Sandeep. We were placed with one other couple, and he gave us a personalized experience. The car was compact, which we didn’t expect, so three of us squeezed in the backseat. Sandeep was very friendly and well-informed. In the end, this was one of our favorite days and we really enjoyed our time!
Great tour with a lot of knowledge of the area. The fortress was great. Workers in costumes playing the roles of characters from back in the day. The light house was gorgeous on a beautiful day.
Enjoyed the trip very much. Our guide, Jesse, was very knowledgeable and considerate of all our needs. He made the trip special, and the fortress is definitely worth the visit. The lighthouse is a bonus. I would recommend.
The tour was wonderful, loved seeing all the docents dressed in period garb. The only problem was our wonderful driver had a thick accent, so it was difficult to understand him. It did not in any way take away from the experience, however, because all of the docents were primarily the purpose we were there.
Very informative and knowledgeable guide.
Arrangements clear. Met at the port as agreed. Small group of 6 in our vehicle. Our guide/driver KV was very good. The tour offered a good mix of history and scenic. Only thing would be if had longer at the Louisbourg Fortress as a lot to see but we were limited by cruise ship times. KV not only knowledgeable of the history of the area but also talked about life as a resident in Cape Breton
We really enjoyed visiting the light house and the fort. The fort was very nice. The displays and presentations really gave us insight into living in the fort during the period of time when it was occupied.
Amand was the perfect tour guide. He was very knowledgeable and friendly. Lots of detailed history even though her has only been living there for 3 years from India. He was very accommodating to our groups needs. The fortress was so much larger than expected and provided a fun experience for the day. We would recommend this tour to others.
Aman with City Heart Tours was an excellent tour guide. Not only was he a good driver, he did a good job showing our group around the fortress. He was also very flexible with our drop off after the tour. Thank you, Aman.
Aman was a fantastic driver and tour guide. He told us all about the history on the drive over. We stopped at the Louisburg lighthouse along the way which was awesome. He stayed with us at the fort and basically was our own personal tour guide. He was very knowledgeable and knew all about the fort. Highly recommend this tour and ask for Aman.
A very nice 4-5 hour guided tour of Louisbourg Fortress with guide Jessie/Jaswarti. We were picked up right at the cruise terminal and driven to the light house by the fortress and then had a 2-3 hour tour of the Fortress. Jessie was very knowledgeable about the history of the island and the Fortress and we learned a lot. It was just the 4 of us and Jessie in one vehicle. We had a chance to ask a lot of individualized questions and Jessie knew a lot about the history of the island, including about the native people, the French settlers, and the later English settlers. We got a short tour of Sydney at the end and had a little time to walk around before heading back to our boat.
Buyer beware - this is essentially an Uber service. We arrived via cruise ship and met our driver near the Sydney port. Car was an older Toyota Camry with some scratches/dings. After leaving the port, we picked up 2 more passengers at a local hotel (now driver + 4 adults). We were driven to the Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic site. Admission to the fortress was included (although currently waived by Canadian government). Description suggests that the guided tour was included. It was not - an additional charge would have been incurred for a guided tour. The Fortress itself is very interesting - good for all ages as long as there are no mobility concerns. We were then taken to the Louisbourg Lighthouse. The lighthouse isn't open for tours but is beautiful and well worth a stop! Driver, while friendly, is not a local of the Sydney area. Hiring local guides would enhance the tour.
the tour was really fantastic and full of info..they are very considerate with regards to time not in a hurry..clean modern cars. I would highly recommend this company..very honest and we got the value of our money..I would say they are less expensive than the other company i used before..my 2nd time to Fortress of Louisburg
Our guide was wonderful! I highly recommend!
Almost gone to year 1744 fortified town the staff members were playing character roles from 18th century which was very interesting and moreover best thing was dressing like soldier and firing the ,1744 musket with my own bare hands
The driver picked us up from the cruise port on time. The tour was really nice. We first went to the lighthouse. Then we got dropped off at Louisburg Fortress, which was a really big place, need to spend more than 2 hrs there. We were given a time for pickup, our driver was slightly delayed because he was doing another tour group apparently. Not a big deal but I wish we were told so we didn't leave our stuff in the car. Value for money is ranked low because if we just got a cab at the cruise port, the price would have been 1/3 the price I paid for this tour.
We expected a guided tour but this was more like a taxi ride to the points of interest. Driver was friendly but difficult to understand.
Fort and lighthouse was a great experience. Going in a small group like this allows you to get ahead of the buses so we had the lighthouse all to ourself for quite some time for great pics. Driver timed everything perfectly!
A wonderful experience that included more than the ship’s excursion for half the price! The guide was very knowledgeable and helpful!
The driver was waiting and holing their company name card just outside the cruise terminal. We were lucky that only 4 persons took this trip so we had amber space in the Doge SUV. The first location is the light house which is beautiful. I wish we could stay longer to take pictures. The second location which is the Fortress also good. The driver offered a choice for us that was a guided tour or visit on our own. We chose the second one. By the end of the trip we also asked the driver dropped us off near downtown which we could walked through the town and back to the ship.
Our tour guide was kind and very knowledgeable. He showed us the lighthouse, fortress, and city historical sites.
It was a great tour! The Fortress was big and there's lots to see. The lighthouse was beautiful. Driver was ready waiting for us at the port when we disembarked. Two comments, getting a taxi tour at Port would've been 1/3 the price so it depends if you want to chance it by just getting a tour there. (seems the tours were widely available) And another thing, I don't know why the driver pretended to get tickets at the fortress when the tickets were free. No need to pretend... Otherwise, it was an excellent tour albeit expensive. There were 5 of us so we were paying per person vs getting a taxi tour at Port was per vehicle.
This was a small group tour so it was perfect. The driver was great and explained a lot about the area. The fortress was amazing and you can easily spend an entire day there. The tour guide did tell us about highlights to see in the fortress which helped because I would have missed some of the interesting things like musket shooting. Loved that we had time to spend on various stops and could kinds take more or less depending on the needs of the group. Since we were all on the same ship it worked out well. Definitely recommend when in Sydney.
I was excited to take an excursion that visited both the lighthouse and the old fort. There was a little mixed messaging regarding the exact time to meet upon disembarking our cruise ship but the operator guaranteed he will be waiting for us, and he was there, as promised, and was easy to find. I knocked the rating down because he arranged for six adults to be stuffed into a Dodge Durango SUV where two people had to climb into the third row, and three people squished into the middle seat (and one up front). Our group agreed to rotate seats, but a lot of people, especially strangers, aren’t always that cool. Our driver and guide was professional, gave a lot of historical narrative about the area, and was very we versed in local information. He recommended a great lunch spot for after our tour and even dropped us off there as we returned to the port. I would use this company again if we had a more spacious vehicle, so if you’re concerned about comfort for the price you’re paying, please ask questions before you reserve your seats.
This was the most disappointing Viator tour we’ve ever had. There were 3 couples on the tour. The tour we booked was different from the other 2 couples. Our tour was advertised as having a guided tour at Louisbourg Fortress. We were just dropped off to self explore. When I asked the driver about it, he asked a colleague who told him they changed the description of the itinerary a couple weeks earlier. We should have been notified of the change. The other couples had a stop at a railway museum on their itinerary. We stopped but it was closed. The vehicle was a standard minivan so 3 adults had to sit on the back bench. The only reason I gave 2 stars was because our driver tried very hard to make the tour as pleasant as he could.
Had an amazing time! Easy to locate van and meet the guide. Enjoyed seeing the city on the way to the fortress. Enjoyed the stop at the lighthouse beforehand. Had the option of guided tour or not at the Fortress. Timing was perfect. I recommend as it was definitely cheaper than doing the cruise excursion and nice having a small group.
What an interesting place to visit, and so well done. We paid for a short introductory tour which was helpful later as we toured the fortress. The in-character narrators we met along the way were excellent, full of interesting information about the people who once lived there. We spent three hours here and were never bored.
We had the most amazing day! Our guide (I am sorry I don’t have his name) was very informative and very friendly. The lighthouse stop was fantastic and the fort was a must see! My only complaint was that it was never made very clear what time to meet and because of that we held up the tour a few minutes which we felt bad about.
Loved seeing the lighthouse and fortress. Much cheaper than the cruise line and a better, smaller-group experience. Learned a lot as we toured the city beforehand and as we traveled to Louisbourg. Car was comfortable. We had enough time at each spot. (only thing I would recommend is a bit more communication ahead of time about start time.)
That was amazing experience with brand new vehicle and lighthouse is wonderful sight in louisbourg..recommended
Absolutely fantastic small group tour you could ask for. Jessie was waiting for us at the pier. Total of 6 of us in a van plus him. He took us to the lighthouse and then to the fortress. He stayed with us the entire day. He was very knowledgeable and a very kind gentleman. The fortress experience exceeded our expectations. It’s truly magnificent and we were lucky for a gorgeous weather day. The day was truly magical and I don’t hesitate to recommend this tour.
Beautiful scenery with fall colors. The Fortress was quite interesting, well restored and the staff was informative.
Thorough trip back in time to Expansive Fortress! Walking & interacting with costumed interpreters for a look at Ft Louisbourg throughout history. Fa exceeded our expectations!
This company either hires or combines similar products into one service. Our particular van had three groups (2,2,3), one of which didn’t book with the same company name that the other two did. All that is good. The problem is that the same guide is servicing multiple trips on multiple ships. We were his 2nd group of the day. His first group, it seems, was delayed getting off their ship, which meant our guide was late starting his route and our group was 30 minutes late getting started (we were all at the port looking for our guide about 30 minutes prior to pick-up). Once picked up, our guide was friendly and provided some information along the way. So, the tour was fine and worth a few hours visit. It’s a shame that the schedule got messed up and communication was non-existent.
Everyone in our group thoroughly enjoyed this excursion. Jassie was very knowledgeable about the entire area, and was very accommodating ( even stopping at a pharmacy for us to get some supplies. He brought us by the lighthouse and cliffs and through the Mik a maw area as well as a very thorough tour of the fortress. The fortress was staffed with costumed role playing enactors that further presented facts about the Fortress and its history. Thanks, Jassie for a very enjoyable experience!
Our guide, Manny was knowledgeable and very friendly . We enjoyed our time at the fort and the reenactment people were great. The musket fire demonstration with explanation of a French soldier's life was excellent. This was an great tour that we would recommend to anyone.
Jesse was an awesome guide, we enjoyed our day well got to see some nice scenic views falls colour lighthouse and a lot of history for small town Sydney n Louisburg.
KV was excellent. Very nice drive down with an on the way stop at a beautiful overlook. Couldn't have been better. At this time of year about 1/2 of the town is closed, but what is open was worth the time.
