Halifax Essentials: Peggy’s Cove, Citadel Hill & Titanic Cemetery

We came in on a cruise ship to Halifax. We were a little nervous if it would be hard to get to the meeting point with our tour guide. Nav, our tour guide and driver, was very good at communicating with us. He came right to the pier where we disembarked into Halifax. Because we were a small group, Nav was able to take us on a scenic route to Peggy's Cove. He told us lots of interesting facts and history about Halifax along the way. He gave us as much time as we wanted to explore around Peggy’s cove area and gave us suggestions where to get the famous lobster roll. Because it ended up only being 2 people on the tour Nav was able to take us to see few extra things not on the schedule in addition to the scheduled Citadel & Titanic Graves. By the end of the tour we felt like we were friends with Rav.

Perfect tour with an Awesome & Amazing tour guide. Jay was very knowledgeable, he was kind, helpful, considerate, caring and friendly and respectful. Jay made our tour picture perfect. Jay made certain we got all the best angles for pictures. His driving was excellent. He provided bottle water and gave us a history lesson on the area. JAY was the best!

Rana was an excellent tour guide. He knows the history with Peggy’s Cove, Citadel Hill & Titanic Cemetery. Picked us up on time & the ride was enjoyable. We were a small group of 5 which made it more intimate not just a number. Recommend this tour. Will not be disappointed.

The places we went were very enjoyable and meaningful and we highly recommend them. Guide was moderately experienced being a recent immigrant so not too much local insight but nice chat about India. More of a private taxi experience than a guided tour.

Jessica was a fantastic guide. Very knowledgeable and articulate. Small group of 6 total on our tour. Just enough time at each stop to see and do what was needed.

It’s a great tour but seemed excessive to be at Peggy’s Cove for two hours.. it seems like there should be some interesting sites not so far out of Halifax. .. next time we will research the historic sites and neighborhoods closer in That being said the tour was interesting!

My experience was sweet and sour. Was nice to be in a new place full of history but the weather condition don’t let admire and enjoy or take pictures specially in Peggy’s Cove as well.

We booked this tour last minutes. Our guide Jay tuned up on time and communicated with us immediately after we booked. This tour is very good because it’s fie small groups up to five and we were lucky enough to get it all to ourselves just to us.! Highly recommend it!

Our driver was an hour late picking us up and then crammed 4 of us in a small suv. Not enjoyable at all.

Our driver (tour guide) Iqbal was a really nice guy, very polite, knowledgeable and a very safe driver. He picked us up earlier than expected as our ship was leaving 4 hours earlier due to an impending storm, we had to arrange a 3 hour tour instead of 4 hours. We thus ended up as the only couple in a very comfortable car. We loved Peggy's Cove, and the scenery during the drive, including the luxury houses. Unfortunately there was not enough time to see Citadel Hill, or visit the Titanic Cemetery. Maybe next time? Thank you Iqbal, from Jeff & Sue.

We had a perfect day with Iqbal in Halifax! When he found that we were on our way to the meeting place, he offered to meet us at a different location to better accommodate us. He immediately made us feel comfortable and like part of his family. We especially appreciated his knowledge of the area and his willingness to share that knowledge with us. He is not originally from Canada, and the fact that he dedicated so much of himself to learning Canadian history for the sake of being great at his job was impressive, and we genuinely appreciated his passion and intelligence. He shared so many interesting stories with us “from his belly”. He took us to the Citadel, Peggy’s Cove, and the Titanic Cemetery. He even shared with us his best recommendations for snacks to try in Peggy’s cove and we were not at all disappointed! We have not stopped talking about our day in Halifax, and it was largely due to Iqbal and his hospitality. We’ve taken a lot of cruises and booked many tours, but Halifax and this tour especially may be one of the best yet. It’s definitely going to be hard to top! Thanks again for a day we’ll never forget!

Our group tour turned into a private tour with Nav. He was amazing! So friendly and engaging. He shared lots of local history and many personal highlights. Very knowledgeable and accommodating.

Enjoyed a wonderful and relaxed excursion with our guide, Dal. Pick up right outside the cruise ship with complimentary water. We drove up to the citadel for views over Halifax, then headed out to Peggy’s Cove, a very scenic drive past forestry and multiple lakes. We had over an hour and a half to ourselves to visit the lighthouse, walk around the village and have a coffee at the gift shop. Then Dal accompanied us to the cemetery to visit the Titanic graves and Halifax explosion memorial providing us with background on the events. My husband enjoyed chatting with Dal about their shared love of cricket!! A throughly enjoyable and relaxed excursion.

We were excited to go on this excursion. The evening before, at 10:35 pm I got a text from our 'driver' I had to ask several questions to confirm pickup, pier #, time and location. Turns out our tour guide was a young man who spoke broken and at times too fast to understand with his accent. He was kind, courteous but hard to hear in the backseat of a the vehicle. He did not have the depth of knowledge we've experienced on other Viator tours in other countries. The tour was advertised as up to 6 passengers. Our friends and us totaled 4. We assumed at least a 6-7 pax van. We were picked up in a 5 passenger Hyundai ( included the driver), it was dirty and not the comfort level we assumed. Recommend a 6 hr tour- which include going inside the Citadel, the explosion of 1917 which killed 1600 people in Halifax and more time to reflect on the Titanic victims burial cemetery. Viator should vet their local guides/drivers better for a quality experience. We have 2 more tours with Viator and we hope they are better than this experience.

I only booked a few hours before the tour started. Iqbal - my guide - picked me up at the cruise terminal which worked smoothly. He is an excellent tour guide who made the whole trip very enjoyable. I learned a lot about history, geography and culture. Happy to reach out to Iqbal when I’ll be back!

Our guide, Iqbal, was very focused on delivering an experience that exceeded our expectations. He was very informative and delivered the information with enthusiasm and a sense of humour. As we were cruise passengers, he ensured that there was no time pressure to meet or departure deadline.

We were docked in Halifax for the day, and extended hours due to change is our route. We found this tour on Trip Advisor, and we had the best experience, and highly recommend taking this, and we definitely would do again with this team. Nav was our guide, and he was excellent. Nav was very professional, vehicle was clean, excellent driver, and shared so much history of the area of Halifax. Ask for Nav, as your guide you will not be disappointed!!!

Tour was very good. Enjoyed the places that we went. Had a little difficulty with the tour guides accent. Biggest complaint is the vehicle was not suitable for five adults. The backseat was made for children not adults. The adults that had to sit in the back struggle to get in and out. Would not recommend that vehicle ever be used for adults again maybe people with children would be fine, but not adults.

Thank you for the Amazing tour. We had a great day with our tourguide Iqbal today in a mini van So only 5 people. He had a lot of advise for us and we could visit Citadell Hill for free. The tour was appr. 3h hours.. but times flew so quickly. We wish we could stay the whole day with you. Thank you for the lovely day and if we visit Halifax again..we will definitely book a tour again with you.

Jay is nice to accept my last minute change of pick up location due to heavy rain. He told us stories about Halifax as well as our destination Peggy’s Cove. It was fun listening stories in the car and the view is nice at Peggy’s Cove. If you are here for a day. This must be the first and only choice.

We hit the jackpot with Nav as our tour guide! He was knowledgeable regarding the area and provided an amazing/personalized tour of the Citadel, Peggy’s Cove, and the Titanic burial site. Honestly, we were pretty disappointed in Halifax, which appeared to be more of a concrete jungle than the quaint Nova Scotia we pictured, but Peggy’s Cove was the picturesque escape we hoped for! Nav even made sure to bring us to the look out point required to get pictures of the view of the lighthouse we had seen so many times. Talk about someone who loves what they do and takes the time to be sure others enjoy the area as much as he does. 10/10 recommend - definitely request Nav if you can!

This was of the best tour I have ever done, and I travel a lot. The ride was great. We were two passengers, shut out to Jeff. The guide Nav was amazing. Fun, attentive and knowledgeable. I would recommend this tour company. Also, Peggy Cove was beautiful. Wear good shoes.

Our tour guide, Nav, was extremely knowledgeable and friendly! He went out of his way to give us the best possible experience, telling us a thorough history of the area, answering all our questions, giving us great recommendations, and being very friendly and personal the whole time. He was also very patient. I never felt rushed at all. He even told us stories from his own life, and conversation with him was very easy. I fully enjoyed my day!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I had a wonderful experience with our guide, Jai. He was punctual, friendly, and made the entire trip enjoyable from start to finish. Although the drive was about an hour, it never felt boring because he shared so many interesting stories and facts about the city. It was clear that he is very knowledgeable and passionate about the area. Jai was also incredibly thoughtful—he even helped take some great photos for me, which I really appreciated. His kindness and attention to detail made the experience even more memorable. I highly recommend this tour, especially if you have Jai as your guide. Thank you for such a fantastic day!

Overall, this was a decent tour with a knowledgeable guide, but there were some trade-offs that kept it from being a higher-rated experience. Our guide, Jai, did an excellent job explaining the history of Halifax and the places we visited. He has a great sense of humor and shared plenty of interesting facts along the way. One thing to be aware of is that he is originally from India, and his accent and pronunciation of some words may occasionally be challenging, particularly for non-native English speakers. My husband, for example, had some difficulty understanding everything, but Jai more than made up for it with his enthusiasm and knowledge. Peggy’s Cove itself was honestly a bit of a disappointment. It felt very much like a tourist trap, and there isn’t a great deal to do once you arrive. That said, the drive out there was beautiful and provided a wonderful escape from the city, with some scenic coastal views along the way. If you’re visiting Peggy’s Cove, dress for the weather. We experienced dense fog, strong winds, and temperatures that made it feel like we had stepped into a freezer. Fortunately, once the fog lifted and the sun came out, it warmed up considerably. I would also recommend bringing sunscreen and a hat, as the conditions can change quickly. The Titanic Cemetery was easily the highlight of the tour. Standing among the graves of Titanic victims gave me goosebumps and was a genuinely moving experience. I only wish we had spent more time at the Halifax Citadel. We basically drove by and stopped briefly for photos. The views were nice, but I would have enjoyed having enough time to actually go inside and explore. The biggest disappointment, however, was the vehicle. Don’t expect a spacious full-size SUV. Our tour used an older, smaller Hyundai SUV, and the middle seat in the back was especially uncomfortable for a four-hour tour. That lack of comfort significantly impacted the overall experience and is the primary reason I’m giving this tour 3 stars instead of 4 or 5. If you’re mainly interested in seeing some of Halifax’s highlights with a knowledgeable guide, this tour delivers. Just go in with realistic expectations about Peggy’s Cove and the vehicle you’ll be riding in.
