The Halifax Farmers Market was created by Royal Proclamation in June of 1750, a year after the founding of Halifax. The Governor and Council designated a site for the Market – the present day Bank of Montreal building. For 50 years this flesh, meat or cattle market, as it was known, sold produce as well as livestock delivered from Acadian farms in the Annapolis Valley and from local farm production. In 1848 the City of Halifax was incorporated and the original City Charter conveyed the Country Market property to the city “for the public and common benefit and use of the City of Halifax according to the true interest and meaning of the original grant.” The Market has operated in several locations across the city since its inception in 1750, but moved to the Halifax Seaport in 2010 where it is now known as the Halifax Seaport Farmers’ Market – the longest continuously running Market in North America and proudly hosting over 250 vendors!

Occupied by British military forces in 1750, Georges Island’s strategic position in the middle of Halifax Harbour catapulted it to the heart of seaward defences for one of the principal naval stations in the British Empire in the 18th and 19th centuries. The island came under the command of Prince Edward in 1794 amidst tensions between the United Kingdom and the United States. Home to Fort Charlotte and later its two powerful seaward-facing batteries and underground tunnel complex, the island is also the site of one of Canada’s first fully automated lighthouses. Georges Island was also used as a prison in the early years. Between 1755 and 1763, during the deportation of the Acadians, known as Le Grand Dérangement (The Great Upheaval), the island became a holding area for large numbers of Acadians. Thanks to its complex of subterranean passages and tunnels, this mysterious island has been the subject of local folklore for generations.

Its distinctive star shape is typical of many 19th century forts built by the British military and gave the garrison sweeping arcs of fire. It was the largest man made explosion until the atom bomb. Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada It is on Fort Needham overlooks the area devastated by the Halifax Explosion of December 6, 1917. It commemorates those who were killed or suffered injury, and those who lost homes and family when the munitions ship, Mont Blanc, blew up in Halifax Harbour. It also honours the survivors, who rebuilt the cities of Halifax and Dartmouth in the years that followed. The ten original bells hanging in the tower were donated to the United Memorial Church on nearby Kaye Street by Barbara Orr, who lost her entire family in the explosion. That church, dedicated in 1921, took the place of two other churches that had been destroyed by the blast. Explosion survivors formed most of its early congregation. Later, four extra bells were added.
Following the Halifax Explosion, many of the wood-frame buildings collapsed on their coal stoves and furnaces and caught on fire, which was a concern when reconstruction was being planned. To minimize the danger of fire, Adams and Ross proposed the use of non-combustible hydrostone for the reconstruction of this area.Hydrostone was a concrete block that was finished with crushed rock (granite, in this case) to approximate the appearance of cut-stone construction. The concrete blocks and their faces were amalgamated through a hydraulic pressing process, patented by a Chicago firm. Manufacture of the blocks was done in a plant located in Eastern Passage, Nova Scotia and the finished stones were hauled across Halifax Harbour by barge.

If you love to learn about history and to hear fascinating stories, you’ll love this tour! Paul, our driver and guide, did an excellent job of taking us to not only the landmarks of Halifax, but to the lesser talked about, but equally interesting places. I am a retired teacher and life-long learner. So I really appreciated Paul’s enthusiasm and the way he conveyed his knowledge of Halifax and the surrounding area. He even took us to a great restaurant with delicious food, a beautiful view, and very reasonable prices! The van was roomy and spotlessly clean! We really appreciated the good communication prior to the activity. All of this would have been reason enough to book this tour, but he even picked us up and dropped us off right at the door of our hotel!
Paul did an excellent job guiding us on this tour! It was much more detailed and interesting than I had hoped. He thoroughly explained each place that we were going to see or visit before we got there. I never felt rushed. We got out of the van to get a closer look at many of the points of interest, and slowed down or stopped at others. I got to see, visit, and learn about all the items on my bucket list and more! I had wanted to visit the cemeteries where many of those who perished from the Titanic sinking were buried, to see the area where the Halifax Explosion occurred, to learn more about it, and to walk through the Public Flower Garden. We did all that and more! Paul even took us to a wonderful restaurant with fantastic views of downtown Halifax, the waterfront, and delicious food for a very reasonable price! Paul’s enthusiasm and knowledge of everything Halifax made the tour especially fun! We could tell he really enjoys what he does! I can highly recommend this comprehensive historical journey through Halifax!
Paul our tour guide was very knowledgeable and interesting and showed us some wonderful places on this tour. It was lovely to start with a little independent walk through the Public Gardens as the first main stop before heading to the Citadel to see them set off the Noon Day Gun. Quite an experience and definitely a time to put your fingers in your ears. The main highlight of the day though (on a day packed with highlights) was probably the final stop, which was at Fisherman’s Cove, with its multitude of colourful buildings-cum-souvenir shops. I definitely had to purchase the odd Knick-knack from there. Lots of thanks to Paul for a wonderful tour. Very much worth 5 stars.
Don't miss this tour guys. Paul is very knowledgeable, attentive, helpful. Couldn't do enough to make sure we all had a great time. I learned so much about Halifax and it's history. Best tour we did on our cruise. Also he really likes "Pay Day" Candy bars! Right Paul? LOL
Great tour if you want to experience the an insider view of Halifax. This was our second time visiting Halifax and we learned and saw so many things we had not seen the first time.
My husband and I spent yesterday with Paul in a 6 hour tour seeing many awesome sights! Everything from communication to knowledge Paul was awesome! We learned so much information and glad we booked the tour.
We had an absolutely fabulous day! We saw so much and learned a ton about the history of Halifax. It couldn't have been a better way to see this city.
The tour was very comprehensive and Paul’s use of photos and videos really enhanced the experience. He is very knowledgeable and shares a lot of the back stories that you won’t see or hear in a museum or in a book. He made sure to point out the nuances of various sites and suggested the best places from which to take great photos for your vacation memories. Great tour.
Paul is by far the kindest and most dedicated tour operator I have worked with! His attention to detail, swift action, kindness and knowledge surpasses all others. He offers an incredible product at great rates, and I will definitely use him for all my Halifax tours! Thank you Paul!
Paul really knew his stuff and made Halifax history come alive. We saw so many things we never would have found on our own, and I especially loved the views and shopping at Fisherman’s Cove, visiting the Titanic graves, walking through the Public Gardens, seeing the Citadel st the perfect time, and stopping at the Halifax Explosion Memorial. The tour lasted about 8 hours, which was a surprise for a “half-day” tour, but he packed in a ton and it ended up feeling like a full, memorable Halifax experience. Highly recommend if you want history, scenery, and local insight all in one tour.
Claudio Bennigno was our private tour guide. My husband and I have much experience with travel and tours. Claudio was one of the very best guides - outstanding in every way!
Paul was extremely friendly and knowledgeable. He knows his city’s ins and outs for driving and getting us the closest possible to the attractions. Highly recommend.
Paul was a great guide! Very knowledgeable and personable! We had a great time and learned a lot! Especially loved Fisherman's Cove!
Paul was very knowledgeable and we saw lots of the city. All of the Halifax explosion information was great! Also his van was very nice :)
This was probably THE BEST historical tour I've ever been on. Paul was incredible and knows all the in's and out's of the city so that his guests experience everything to the fullest. He augmented the tour with photos and 1 minute history videos on a large screen in the van. We also heard stories about and met some of the locals on our way. If you are thinking about doing a historical tour of Halifax, look no further!
Paul was one of the best tour guides we have ever had on a trip. Very knowledgeable and kind. Extremely helpful with my elderly mom. Would highly recommend Paul for any tours or rides you need while in Halifax.
Excellent tour! Paul is very knowledgeable and offers a very professional tour with photos, videos and plenty of historical stories! We truly felt that we saw every significant aspect of Halifax, and at Paul was quick to point out the best photo locations at every stop. Go ahead and book this tour, you will not be disappointed!
Lots of history. Small shopping break at fisherman's cove. Nice seafood lunch break with adequate time to enjoy.
Paul was fantastic! He was very knowledgeable about the history of Halifax. Not only did he explain the incidents of each location, it was followed up by a 1 - 2 minute reenactment video of that specific occurance. Paul was very helpful in assisting our friend with his mobility issues making sure that our friend was able to visit each location. Paul took us to a great restaurant for lunch at Halifax harbour. We give Paul our highest recommendation. It was an amzaing and informative tour.
Paul is a standup guy who can be depended on to do the right thing. He's a hard worker and a great representative of his city. You can trust and depend on him.
I did the maximum amount of tours that I could while visiting Halifax as a solo for a week; so, in this case, all three tours: Historic Halifax; Peggy's Cove/Lunenburg; and the wine tour of Annopolis Valley. Paul is a superb guide, and a lovely guy. The bus is great, and the TV addition is very clever. Tons of info to take in, so I lapped it up and learnt a lot. Also some great tiops about where to pick up nice coffee, ice cream and what restaurants to eat in. The days were nice and full, so I was thrilled with 8 hours; I could have gone 10, but I guess Paul needs a break too. Being a wannabe teetotaler, I tried a lot of different pops over the three days, though for some reason everybody seemed to refer to them as 'wobbly pops'? Strange lingo. But nobody seemed to mind having a non-drinking Irishman on board. The groups were great, btw. Any negatives? None that I can think of, though on the morning of the Peggy's Cove tour, it was a little bit cloudy and views weren't as spectacular as I had hoped (come on, Paul, can't you organise clear blue skies for every tour, please!).
I booked a tour with Paul for my family visit to Halifax (along with my mom). At first I was a bit nervous about the idea of a six hour tour of the city, but it was well worth it. This was one of the best tours I have ever had, even as an experienced traveler. Paul made sure we saw the highlights of the area and he was very thorough and engaging. I could really tell he had done his research extensively. We visited all but one of the Titanic cemeteries, sites associated with the Halifax explosion of 1917, and saw the noon cannon firing and changing of the guard at the Citadel. He tends to talk fast but the tour never dragged and its because he has a lot to say. I would say if you are visiting for a few days this is a great way to get your bearings and see things to go back to. But honestly I spent enough at each site I never felt rushed. Paul is very organized and its easy to tell he is an experienced guide. I cannot recommend this tour highly enough, it is terrific!
Paul was an excellent guide and driver. If anything, there was too much information and the tour was a bit longer than we had expected. We were picked up at 8:25 a.m. and returned to our hotel just before 4:00 p.m. We were very tired. The tour would have been better had it been about an hour shorter. But Paul was excellent and accommodating.
Travels are so rich when you have a knowledgeable and passionate guide to share their expertise and stories. We certainly experienced that with Paul McNeil and our half day tour of Halifax.
Paul was very passionate and knowledgeable of the history and story of Halifax. At times he was giving so much information that it was hard to follow when pointing out important historical sites. Was so glad to learn about the 1917 tragedy in Halifax. Only couldn't give a 5/10 because little OCD about were you sat in his van. Switching for someone to hear better or have more leg room really made him mad. Don't take if over 6' you will not fit comfortably in the seats. Otherwise, wonderful lunch and tour.
Thorough and professional. Very informative.
Paul was a great guide. Very knowledgeable and generous with photo opportunities. Covered a wide range of sites, and managed to avoid the tourist hordes. Candy and water was provided. A great way to get an overview of the city.
Best tour experience with Paul who is so knowledgeable and gracious! Highly recommend this tour and appreciated his creative use of short video clips throughout.
This tour with Paul was amazing. Paul is a thorough detail oriented tour guide providing military history in addition to the building, people, community, sports activities, universities, and even some political history. He even included Dartmouth in his tour which was great. Paul is organized and focuses on the local community and not just the prominent leaders. I had an excellent experience and would do the tour again as it was informative, interesting, and fun. Paul even shared details about the wildlife in the area. It was as the best tour I've experience in my world travels. A must do activity and select Paul as your tour guide
Wonderful experience! Paul loves his city and it is evident in his descriptions of events. Such an education. His knowledge and thoughtfulness throughout the tour were 5 stars.
This tour with Paul is very detailed and informative. All you need to know (and more) about Halifax is covered.
Paul was very knowledgeable and thorough. The screen with videos and pictures assisted in seeing the attractions and telling the stories. We went to areas that other tours may not have gone such as Fisherman,s Cove. Paul was very respectful of an everyone and the tour was not rushed.
This tour exceeded our expectations. It was a much more comprehensive tour of Halifax’s rich history than we expected, including touring all over the city as well as stops in Dartmouth. Paul’s knowledge is extensive, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves!
A very informative tour. Paul is a great guide. Very good communicator and very knowledgeable about Halifax. He takes you to the major attractions but also some places that are historically important but not a touristy. Comfortable van. You get back to the ship with time to spare. I would strongly recommend this tour.
Paul sent a message letting us know where he was parked, which was right outside the cruise terminal. He packed in a lot of great information. He took us to significant historical sites and provided context for what we saw. The lunch spot was very scenic. The van is spacious and you can even stand up inside, no issue.
Paul was amazing. He is extremely knowledgeable of Halifax and has a passion for his city. I went with 3 friends to Peggy’s Cove, Lunenburg and Mahone Bay. We had a fabulous time. Paul recommended a restaurant and the lobster roll was the best ever. I would highly recommend Paul for a tour of Halifax. Thanks Paul for a memorable experience.
If you’re ever going to do anything when you first arrive to Halifax, it’s this tour. We arrived Friday via Paul’s car service and the experience was so pleasant. Clean car, was waiting for us when our plane arrived and confirmations via text. The next day we did the tour. We saw and learned so much. Also gave us a complete lay of the land which enabled us to plan out the rest of our week. We saw and learned all about Halifax and Dartmouth. We got great restaurant and landmark suggestions. He even brought us to a great seafood place for lunch. I highly recommend this tour. My husband is a history buff and talked about all the things he learned all week. Can’t wait to go back and take another tour with this company. Also highly recommend their airport to hotel car service.
If you are looking for a limousine chauffeur and tour guide who truly cares, look no further! Paul McNell went above and beyond, even returning a forgotten purse after hours and adjusting a tour when I felt unwell. He is incredibly knowledgeable, uses great videos to enhance the experience, and even added a special military museum stop for my husband. 10/10 experience!"
A great experience. The tour was informative and interesting. The guide was very knowledgeable and entertaining. Saw so much over the course of the tour. I would recommend printing off the itinerary to keep track of all the sites seen.
Paul was a very knowledable guide. We all felt we had a complete tour of the city of Halifax. It was a verywell planned tour.
Amazing tour of the Halifax area. We learned so much about the history and landmarks around the city. Paul was so knowledgeable and organized, with videos and pictures to assist with the tour! Highly recommend
At first we weren’t planning to do any tours but as we walked around the city we could tell there more to the city than just beautiful buildings and views. We are so glad we took this tour. Paul (aka God Father of Nova Scotia) knows everything about Halifax, it’s forgotten history that many locals don’t even know and after the tour we had such an appreciation for the city, the people and culture. Highly recommend you take this tour with Paul!
Paul was a great guide. His knowledge has to be unmatched. We never know anything about the Halifa explosion. We had no idea of Halifax's connection to the titanic. Highly recommend this tour. We came to Halifx in March and was not disappointed.
Paul has a great passion for his city. You can tell he has lived every inch of it and wants to share that pride with you. Make sure you have a good base of Halifax history before you head out with him to get the best experience. Recommended.
The tour we had with Paul was incredible and we are so grateful we could learn from his vast knowledge and personal experience of the city and area! Paul is extremely well versed on the history of the area, and is able to explain detail on various landmarks and events. His tour is very well planned! I would say this is a must do for anyone visiting Halifax!
Paul, the gentleman who runs the tour just literally made my day. Very organized, very friendly, trustworthy just in time person with an incredible expertise in Halifax history. I spent a day with a group of other people with Paul. It was incredible. Strongly recommend this tour for everyone. BR, Andrey
Trip was fantastic. The higher roof van was great, easy to get in and out. Paul gave such a great tour all over Halifax, Dartmouth and Fishermans Cove. Lunch was very good in Dartmouth. We learned so much of the history of the city, the ship explosion, Titanic history and the gravesites. His presentation of videos and talking told us so much more than we had ever learned from being in Halifax before on a different tour. We would highly recommend this tour to anyone
Paul does a wonderful job and is very passionate about his city. He was very informative and told us many things we did not know. I would have given a 5, however because our cruise ship was leaving at 3:30, he said that wasn’t enough time to do everything. He cut our tour short even though it said 6 hours when I booked it. Where we were dropped off was 1-1/2 miles from our ship (even though he said it was only a few blocks) and we had to walk back to our ship in the rain. If I would have known all of this I definitely would not have booked this excursion.
Paul was informative without being overwhelming. He showed us an amazing amount in a short period of time. We had a tight time table, as our ship left on the early side, so we had to leave out on stop. He gave us the options and let us choose. (We made a great choice). In addition to having a microphone in the van with speakers, he had a large tablet mounted on the dash so that everyone could see it on which he showed photos and videos of some of the history he was talking about. To show you how much we liked him and his tour, this was the second time we had done it with him. We learned many things on this that we hadn’t learned the first time. I would rate him a 6 out of 5 if I could.
