Herman was a wonderful driver. Shared lots of sights and local history. Only problem was the Fortress was closed for the season. Only two costumed interpreters in the fort and only a couple of the buildings in the village were open. Be sure to check Fortress schedule before you book.

Built in 1787, Cossit House is one of Nova Scotia’s earliest examples of neo-classical Georgian architecture. This one-and-a-half-story, wood-framed home was originally constructed with timbers from New England, assembled on-site in Sydney. Its exterior features a rubble-stone foundation, a gable roof, and six-over-six wooden windows, typical of the period. Inside, notable features include a central hallway plan and paneled walls in the front hall, reflecting its historic character. Though it has changed ownership and undergone renovations over the years, the house has been restored to its appearance during Rev. Cossit’s residence (1787–1800). Today, Cossit House and its surrounding grounds are recognized as a provincially designated heritage site.
St. George’s Anglican Church, situated at the corner of Charlotte and Nepean Streets in downtown Sydney, Nova Scotia, is a notable local landmark. Constructed between 1785 and 1791, this stone Gothic Revival-style church embodies a simple, elegant design that exudes dignity and strength. Both the church and its graveyard are protected as part of the provincial heritage designation.

Reviews
The tour to the Fortress of Louisbourg. Our tour guide shared with us the history of Sydney and also the life of someone leaving there. Our guide was personable and professional. Viator seems to always get it right.
Overall a great tour and this place is a for sure a place to visit. Tour guide was very helpful. Enjoyed the role players and such on this tour.
We enjoyed the freedom of walking around without a guide. The actors in period costumes were delightful to talk to and provided lots information. They were willing to answer all of our questions too.
Disorganised tour with no signage to find the operator. It was in a car with a driver with strong body odour and very little local knowledge, as he’s only lived there for 3 years. We were told the tour would leave half an hour after docking whereas the other 4 passengers were told 11.30am. Luckily they were contacted but there was time wasted. Allowed 2 hours to wander around the fortress which had no signage and no maps. There were 2 other stops at a lighthouse and at a pointless tiny train museum.
Not expecting a private tour but that is essentially hat we got. Very enjoyable. Jas was very knowledgeable about the fort and history of the region.
Nice drive to lighthouse and fort with plenty of time to explore. Railroad museum was closed unexpectedly, but didn’t take away from the excursion.
BEWARE! DO NOT BOOK WITH THIS TOUR COMPANY! Based on the TRIP ADVISOR tour we purchased versus what we actually experienced, it was a horribly stressful fiasco, so this is hardly worthy of a one star rating! We did not experience a GUIDED TOUR, as was advertised by TRIP ADVISOR, but an expensive UBER to Sydney area sites. This was a half day of miscommunications, itinerary changes and deletions that we never requested. Very good weather so none of this was driven by bad weather. We booked with Shuttle Tours. The name on the six-passenger van that finally showed up was Shuttle 24 Travels. We received no notification on the name change and who to watch out for at the pick-up point. Original cruise ship pickup time was 8-830am. Received text night before pickup which changed it to 930-10am. We were at the meeting point at 9am looking for Shuttle Tours. At 10am Shuttle Tours had not shown up so we exchanged texts and was advised pick-up would be in 5 minutes, but then 30 minutes later, a staff member, Jass, showed up, without a vehicle. Jass told us it would be another 10 minutes as four others had to be picked up at a different cruise ship. Finally, at 1130am the Shuttle 24 Travels van (with yet another driver) arrived with four others from another ship, who originally had a noon pickup time. So basically, we waited 2 hours to begin our “tour" with Jass. Jass advised us it would be a 10 minute drive to Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site. We arrived one hour after we departed the Sydney ship port. No traffic whatsoever and no stops. At Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site, Jass attempted to drop all six of us at the wrong entrance not once, but twice. We were thankful for the Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site staff which directed Jass to the correct entrance. It was then that Jass admitted to us that he had never been to the Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site as he lives in Halifax. We got out of the van and Jass left. No guided tour by Jass. At this point, we were very concerned that Jass would not return after the hour to continue the tour (can you imagine that stress), but he did. That left us with only one hour at the Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site, not two hours according to the tour itinerary we purchased. One hour is not sufficient time to explore Fortress of Louisbourg. Interesting Fortress and would definitely visit again. Fortress-provided guided tours were available for a fee, but we lacked sufficient time to participate in any. Next stop on the itinerary, the Point Lighthouse. Nice, but no entrance. No historical facts provided by Jass. Final stop on our itinerary before heading back to the Sydney cruise ship port, was the Louisbourg Train Museum. It was closed, which was unknown to Jass. Thankfully we were returned to the port in ample time to board the ship, but our “tour” was shortened by one hour. The van was making some unusual noises throughout the “tour” and Jass acknowledged it was probably a tire going flat, but there were no failures. Jass did not provide any information about the Sydney area, the Fortress, the lighthouse or any local history. I immediately texted and emailed Shuttle Tours, describing our fiasco with Jass and asked for a refund due to failure to provide a tour in accordance with the itinerary and they ignored me, so I disputed the entire amount with my credit card company and was compensated after two months.
Great experience! Load a map through Parks Canda. Be sure to go the Governors apartment,. The reenactment of muzzle guns were interesting.
The Fortress of Louisbourg tour was an amazing experience! The historic setting, knowledgeable guides, and fascinating buildings made history come alive. Shuttle Tours provided excellent service, with friendly staff, comfortable transportation, and great organization throughout the trip. We truly enjoyed the experience and highly recommend Shuttle Tours for this memorable adventure!
Visiting the Fortress of Louisbourg from the Sydney cruise terminal was completely stress-free. Shuttle Tours provided seamless pick-up right at the pier and a comfortable ride. The 18th-century fortress is massive, filled with costumed re-enactors and rich history. We had ample time to explore, watch the cannon demonstrations, and take great photos without feeling rushed. Excellent local service, fantastic historical insight, and guaranteed on-time return to the ship. A must-do shore excursion!
Highly recommended! The tour was smooth, enjoyable, and professionally managed.
Had a fantastic experience with this company. Everything was easy and well organized.
This was a small group tour (3 people total) to Fort Louisburg. The driver/tour guide barely said 10 words on the 40 minute trip from Sydney to the Fort. I was expecting a local tour guide to fill us in with local history on the drive, some history of Louisburg, and some interesting local attractions. We got a lot of very quiet time. I spoke more with the other guests than the guide did, and I had just met them. I would not recommend this tour if you want to learn about the area you are travelling through.
Amninder was an amazing guide and driver for our trip to Louisbourg. He was early at the cruise terminal, had a clean and comfortable car, and drove us through town, pointing out and explaining the multiple historical sites of Sydney before driving out to the Fort. He remained at the Fort while we toured for 2 hours. He then brought us up to the lighthouse, despite the pouring rain and winds! Then we stopped by a small rail museum before headed back to the terminal. It was about 4 hours total and he was very friendly and helpful the entire time. Highly recommended for other cruisers!
My goal was to learn about the location and conditions my French ancestors lived in after being removed by the British from Newfoundland ~1715 to Louisbourg. Driver Jass was prompt at the cruise port and helpful throughout. Being at the Fortress was thought-provoking, as I imagined life for transplants and chatted with several very realistic historical recreators. If this phase of history interests you, this tour is well worth the visit.
I had an outstanding experience with Cabot Trail Cab! The driver was punctual, professional, and incredibly friendly. The vehicle was clean, comfortable, and the ride was smooth from start to finish. I really appreciated the safe driving and excellent customer service, which made the journey completely stress-free. If you’re looking for reliable transportation in the Cape Breton area, I highly recommend Cabot Trail Cab. I will definitely use their service again. Thank you for such a wonderful experience!
Small group, max 7 guests, but only 6 adults fit in the small minivan - driver made 7. Three were squashed in the back, and would have been next to impossible for less limber folks. Impossible for those in middle and rear seats to hear driver speak. Driver was very nice young man, but somewhat passive about keeping the group on time. Whole Fortress experience was wonderful! Lots to see - no tour gives enough time, IMO.
I booked this tour as a part of my cruise shore excursions. When I originally booked it, it says to disembark as soon as the ship docks and the driver will wait for 30 min. so I chose it thinking I will have some time to spare after the tour. When my ship arrived I realized they messaged me the night before to meet 10:30-11am (our ship was leaving at 3:30pm and this is 4 hr tour), but I couldn’t get the message because I was on the cruiseship with no connection. Long story short, the tour started at 11am we came back 20 min before the ship departure time which I didn’t like it at all. Also the person who was driving us was not a guide, he was just a driver who’s an international student. He tried his best to do his job, but he was unable to provide us with any knowledge or commentary for the area. I think the lack of proper guided tours in Sydney is somewhat understandable seeing how little the town of Sydney is. Fortress of Louisburg was definitely worth to see. I really enjoyed 2 hrs that I spent there. Despite of unprofessional behaviour of the tour company, I would still recommend it to anyone who wants to spend a little time in Sydney as long as you consider this tour as just a convenient transportation.
Interesting history - it’s not the original fortress, was rebuilt by Canada, but interesting exhibit - driver “Jaz” was fun
To describe this as a tour is very misleading. The title should be modified to say “shuttle” instead because all the driver does is drive and has little/no knowledge of the city or its history. In addition to this, the train stop was closed and the driver stated that it’s “almost always not open.” Very disappointed to have spent this type of money for a taxi service.
We booked this company for a four-hour private tour from the Sydney cruise terminal to the Fortress of Louisbourg and the lighthouse. There were nine people in our family group, and we paid more than $1,200. The package was sold to us as including transportation and a professional local guide. Unfortunately, that is not what we received. Our driver was pleasant enough, but he clearly stated that he was only a driver, not a tour guide. He did not provide any meaningful information about the area, the fortress, the lighthouse or local history. When we arrived at the Fortress of Louisbourg, he simply dropped us off and told us he would see us in two hours. This was extremely disappointing. We expected a professionally guided local experience, especially given the price. Instead, we received basic transportation that we could have arranged ourselves for much less. I would not recommend this company to cruise passengers looking for a real tour. Based on our experience, the service did not match what was advertised or what we paid for.
Extremely professional and friendly. Amazing service. Reliable and lovely customer service . Won’t be disappointed if travel with Shuttle 24
