We were too late to book onto a walking tour so chose this self guided tour instead. Saw things we’d have missed if we didn’t have it. Stunning views. Takes an hour. Medium walking route - steps and some hilly bits - fine for us. App itself sometimes froze or said we were lost so you need to be a bit tech aware to use it. Very glad we did it, thank you.
A fabulous audio tour of Durham. Intimate and flexible. Well worth it as you can do it at your own pace.
lovely tour around durham great to see all the sights
The app download was problematic. Unfortunately the pathway at the second part of the route was closed for repairs (16th September at 11:00am) which threw the walking plan so after only a few minutes we were unable to complete the tour. The path closure was not the fault of VoiceMap tours so they cannot be blamed for the situation but it was zero value for money as it transpired.
A nicely paced audio tour with interesting facts along the way. Excellent weather added to the experience. The GPS tracker wasn't always accurate so the tour didn't automatically kick in at all the landmarks but not a problem as you can play each landmark manually...and not the fault of the tour!
Really great app and tour that knows your location and stops and starts as you walk. Really great content and really enjoyed it. Well recommended
My friend and I really enjoyed this tour and the interactivity worked like magic! It was So clever how the app knew where we were and started and stopped so we could keep our phones safely in our pockets. The guide was very informative and knew lots about the city and the place where we started and the cathedral where we finished were exactly what we wanted.
Audio guide did not do justice to the magnificent cathedral and it's history. Clearly out of date as referenced by mentioning "Covid restrictions."
Couldn’t log on to site so missed the tour. Really disappointed and cost £6.70 too. No one to call to tell me what to do. Such a shame.
Was in Durham for two days but no walking tours running on a Friday so took up the self guided option. It was actually really informative easy to follow the directions and we would never of found our way around with out it. Took just over an hour, a pleasant walk with history details but at a nice pace. Well done would recommend. (You do have to go down steps to the river)
While the storyteller was very good, there was too much quiet - I was unsure that I was going the right way several times, and my husband actually did go the wrong way, because he was having a lot of problems with the gps getting his location right!
I was impressed by the knowledge of the audio guide. Also with the VoiceMap technology that allowed the description to know where we were so the commentary was appropriate for the location.
Easy to use self guided tour. Easy to understand and to navigate and a great insight into the area. An economically way to transverse the area. Highly recommend.
Technology worked well and gave good structure to our walk around Durham. I found the delivery lacked dynamism and for me the structure was a bit confusing, leaping about between centuries. It is good value for money however.
Really informative tour taking in all the main sights. Great to be able to do it in your own time at your own pace
Very interesting tour. Able to to it at your own pace and to stop longer at certain places if wanted. Slight downside: There were 4 of us, but the audio didn’t always sync at the same time, but not a big problem.
Glitchy. Constantly stopped working, resetting. Had to jump between things manually and it would still mess up. Can't really recommend.
Beautiful landscape, impressive buildings and the audio guide completed the day. Everything was outstanding.
Easy to use and able to repeat info which turned out to be useful as husband had to share my headphones as his hearing aids wouldn't connect. Good tour, interesting info lovely walk along the river and bridges
Very clear and informative. An excellent introduction to Durham. To be recommended. We would have a lot without this guide.
I made a booking error and booked Durham, UK instead of Durham, NC, USA. I was not able to change the tour, nor get a refund.
The walking tour was excellent and very informative. The GPS system worked very well. Would definitely use VoiceMap again.
Great little gem of a place for a few days visit. Everything is within walking distance and the cobbled streets, castle and cathedral are a joy to visit and amble around. The castle was a guided tour which I would recommend. Also had a 2.5 hour river walk which was very pleasant. All the restaurants and pubs we visited were excellent. We stayed at the Radisson hotel which proved convenient for access to town. Great little trip and would definitely go back again.
I found the audio tour was easy to follow and informative. Unfortunately, for some reason, my husband's tour lost the auto-tracking and he got frustrated that he had to keep manually selecting each section. We would, however, try another audio tour in future.
The tour was really easy to follow and really interesting. We were disappointed we couldn't book a guided tour but this tour was worked out better as we had all the information we wanted and it was a lot cheaper!
Solo today while husband was working. The audio tour was great and easy to follow. Loved the historical information to explain the beauty I was seeing. Durham is a gem and the interior of the cathedral was incredible. It is a massive building.
Excellent tour - very informative and interesting. A little guidance on where to go to get back to the start would be helpful
An easy to follow tour that introduces you to the history of Durham and its’ famous people and landmarks: Cuthbert Castle Cathedral and some surprises!
This was my first tour with the App. I enjoyed it. It was interesting and informative. I would definitely use the app again
The tour was brilliant. Lots of interesting information and brilliantly organised (so easy to use through your phone/headphones). It's a great way to tour a place at your own pace and was excellent value.
VoiceMap worked really well, so we enjoyed a great tour of Durham with a very knowledgeable local guide. We will definitely use Voicemaps for future city tours and are already recommending it.
Excellent tour guide. So easy to use and perfect for those of us who like to take our time and enjoy the sights and sounds. We saw sights that we would otherwise miss.
This was a great little purchase for the walk around Durham with lots of facts about Durham, its history, its buildings and its inhabitants. I saw a lot of people walking around aimlessly with maps but this phone guide explains where to go and what to look at. Brilliant and money well spent.
Added extra interest to the trip - would definitely do for other places we visit. Was about an hour long but went really quick.
Excellent self guided tour with very easy to use technology. The Durham commentator was clear in both walking directions and information. Just the right mix of history, legend and anecdotes. Highly recommend and will be looking for more guides in other cities.
Really enjoyed the Self guided walk. Nice to take my time and listen again when I wanted to. Also able to linger and look at the view as long as I wanted to. I will use again when I visit other cities.
I absolutely loved this experience and would 100% recommend anyone to try it! I have been to Durham a couple of times before but I've never experienced it in such a way. The narration is great, the GPS location and direction is spot on, and you have the option to listen to it again if you missed something unlike in in-person tours. I went by myself but felt like I had really great company. One thing I struggled with is payment through the trip advisor page, for some reason I wasn't able to do it through my phone even though I've tried to multiple times and I was sure its not a network issue as I've refreshed the page several times and it works until I have to pay then it just glitches. I had to ask someone else to try it through their phone which worked for them. Overall this experience was great value for money, super fun, and I would definitely try it again.
Had not come across this concept before searching for things to do for a short break in Durham on Tripadvisor. Very reasonable priced, so decided to give it a go, and very glad I did. I struggle to absorb much information from guide books, but hearing it whilst walking and looking at the buildings etc. really brought it all to life. Having a guided tour also encouraged me to go places I otherwise probably wouldn't have, and I could do it in my own time. The author / narrator was engaging with his enthusiasm. Only negative was that the app was a little glitchy - when my phone was locked it sometimes stopped playing, then didn't automatically re-start at last place heard. Bit fiddly to find again, however I managed. Overall great product and will definitely try again.
