Mont-Saint-Michel is the most visited site in Normandy. The first construction on the rock was built in 708. The decision was made by Bishop Aubert from Avranches who created the first sanctuary in France dedicated to Saint Michel. Few decades later, it became a major pilgrimage site for all the christians in the world. Thanks to the work of the religious community on the Mont, the site was seen as an intellectual reference in Europe where thousands of books, manuscripts and charters were written or copied. The building suffered from the lack of maintenance during that time and almost disappeared. Fortunately, it was saved from destruction and many architects renovated it from them until the present day. Discover 13 centuries of history with our experienced guides. We did two full day private tours. One to the WWII beaches and American cemetery and the other a full day to Mont Saint Michel. Both days were phenomenal! Mickael was extremely knowledgeable about everything! He is an amazing story teller and could answer all of our questions. The Normandy beaches and Mont Saint Michel have been on our bucket list for quite some time. Had we known we would have the extraordinary good fortune to have a guide like Gwen we would have visited sooner. His knowledge of “the big picture” and as importantly the obscure facts and details literally made history come alive.
