Itinerary
Your tour begins in front of Little Canal Café, located at 26 Canal Street in the Lower East Side. This modern corner café with large street-facing windows is easy to spot as you arrive on Canal Street. Your guide will meet you right outside the main entrance, where the vibrant energy of downtown Manhattan sets the perfect scene for the cultural journey ahead.
We talk about the history of the surrounding area that was once a poor Irish community and before that a polluted pond. You get to see the building that is now most famous for being featured on most episodes of Law & Order
We briefly walk through this park on the edge of Chinatown and talk about what used to be here: the notorious neighborhood of the Five Points. We discuss the Irish immigration and show photos of what the neighborhood used to look like.
We walk through part of the neighborhood, discuss Chinese immigration, and visit a dumpling shop that is a local favorite. We also give tips on where else to visit in the large community.
We head up and around Mulberry Street and discuss Italian immigration. We get to see some amazing modern street art, hear stories about organized crime, and visit an historic local Italian food shop for a delicious tasting.
We cruise through one of the most trendy neighborhoods in New York today and discuss the changing neighborhood. This used to be Little Italy, but today it’s loaded with hip bars and restaurants and we get to see some of the best street art in the city.
As we walk through Nolita, you get a chance to see the original St. Patrick’s and learn about the hardships Catholic immigrants first suffered when coming to this country.
Learn about the history of this park, named for FDR’s mother, and take a quick stroll through the northern end. We’ll also stop at the M’Finda Kalunga Garden inside the park to discuss Latin American immigration and how this neighborhood has changed throughout the decades.
See the transformation of the neighborhood from an area filled with run-down tenements and poverty to one that is currently being gentrified. See lots of great street art and community gardens. Learn about Jewish, German, and Latin American immigration in this neighborhood and sample some traditional food.
We share stories about the founding of the museum and its important part in Lower East Side history. Our tour ends very close to the museum, and our guides can give you tips on how to get tickets and explore their excellent gift shop.

Joanne was great. Interesting tour
The guide never showed up. I’m waiting for my refund.
John was an incredible tour guide. Our daughter enjoyed all the food stops and plans on coming back with her friends in a few weeks. John, was insightful and made the three hour just fly by. He made NYC come alive. We highly recommend this tour.
Great easy going tour ! Love all the food stops from authentic spots and enjoyed learning the history behind each place!
Good tour with informative presentations of interesting local information. Food choices and amounts were great. Full three hours, plenty of walking. Reasonably brisk pace.
We had a great experience on this tour with Joanne! She was extremely knowledgeable and very friendly. As a native New Yorker herself, she really was able to give us an inside look at not only the best food in the LES but also all of the amazing history of the area. We are so glad we went on this tour. Highly recommend!
Unique food with ties to history
Oh what treats Joanne planned for us on this tour! It was full of history and tasty morsels of food! Well done!!
Joanne was Super Fantastic and she made the tour interesting, informative and worth every cent!! The tastings were perfect flavors of different cultures. The information on different landmarks was a great addition. Highly recommend this tour and Joanne as your guide.
For the tour price the food outlets visited are obviously very simple but appropriate. The guide was informative and tailored the route to take account of the fact that I had recently had surgery on my left leg.
Joanne was an incredible guide with a vast amount of knowledge! She tried very hard to keep us in the shade on a very hot day. The bites were yummy too!
Fun way to acquaint ourselves with the lower east side and taste bites of food from the cultures that made the area what is was and is. Joanna was so nice and we especially liked how she threw in more than the “required” information for the tour.
Brian is an exceptional guide: knowledgeable, engaging, and passionate about sharing the stories behind the city’s immigrant communities. The tour is so much more than a food tour. Through fascinating stories, historical context and delicious local food, we gained a much deeper understanding of the people and cultures that shaped Lower Manhattan. Every stop had a purpose, and every story brought the neighbourhood to life. Brian made the experience welcoming, interactive and memorable. Thank you, Brian, for such a fantastic morning!
Really enjoyable experience walking around the lower East side of Manhattan, visiting places we'd never have gone on our own and samping the local cuisine, experiencing a glimpse of life as a proper New Yorker. Very educational too - we learned about the history and cultural development of the area, including the impact of the various immigrant populations via their food. Brian, our guide, was fantastic - personable, friendly and knowledgeable, and very attentive to the group's needs. He has an infectious enthusiasm for everything and showed a genuine interest in us. He really enhanced the experience and we're very grateful for his knowledge and experience. Highly recommended.
We had a great experience seeing the Lower East Side and sampling food in each district with Johanne as our tour guide. She was knowledgeable of the area and showed not only showed us things on the itinerary but also places she loves in that area that are interesting and of note. I would highly recommend this tour for anyone who would like a local's perspective on this part of Manhattan.
Greg was a great guide taking us to little know foodie spots. He pointed out other nyc treasures to try. Great tour. We did a 6 person private tour.
Guide and content of tour was first rate. Food portions and number of stops were meager. It was a light tastings cultural and history tour.
Our guide a was EXTREMELY knowledgeable filled with history info that was relevant to our stops to current events hire the neighborhood was shaped around the Indy he was giving us and it wasn’t just here’s a landmark with facts it was impactful info and unique info such as the hook building and the term hookers coming from it with sailors coming to visit needing a lot of services from the ladies not just the obvious. And a tattoo museum and info about the first electric tattoo machine as it being illegal due to Hepatitis until the 1990s!!! Just so cool. The food was the slight let down for me. I had put down I don’t eat meat but still there was a lot of meat products and a lot of sharing portions with everybody. We had pork dumplings like 9 or more in the same container and everyone was eating out of it to get their allotted 3. Knish same thing 2 large ones in a bag for people to pull out and split and share dipping in mustard they were good but seemed rushed for us very hot still very soft not quite set. Our group voted on tamales which were chicken and I seemed dry cut into two pieces on a same plate. Every time myself or someone else didn’t eat something our guide was very eager to finish it, no coaxing needed. Our pizza slices were definitely not New York slices unlike another Viator tore I did on Greenwich village food tour where food was great and very filling and pizza slices huge. All in all fun day. Learned a lot pinned a lot of places to go back to on our own!
Tour guide was a NO SHOW!! We were at the location 10 minutes ahead of time and waited 35 minutes after it was supposed to start (along with 2 other couples who had the tour booked). Tour guide NEVER SHOWED UP. I tried contacting the operator while we waited, and they didn't respond.
Great tour! Brian did an excellent job of educating us, feeding us, and entertaining us. I thought it was a cultural walking tour with some food…there was a lot of food…all so good. We also stop at Ferrara Bakery for a bathroom stop…if you do, buy some pastries…they were delicious! My only complaint was that two people on our tour were smoking…I think smoking should not be allowed on the tour.
A LOT of walking. Great history. Only four food stops but all yummy. Greg was wonderful. There were four if us and one had a few mobility issues and he was great.
Brian was absolutely phenomenal as our tour guide. He was very knowledgeable about the area and gave us great recommendations for things to do beyond the tour. We would definitely book another tour.
Great experience. Brian was an amazing guide who knows a lot about NY history. I loved seeing the city. Highly recommend this experience got a lot more out of it and had great food along the ways
So fun!!! Brian was so friendly and knowledgeable!!
Brian was amazing! Truly the best tour guide we could have ever had -- very knowledgeable and sweet, learned a lot about NY, and tried a lot of great food. Would recommend!!
My partner and I booked this tour for our anniversary and we enjoyed it so much! We had Greg as our tour guide and he was so kind and knowledgeable. We absolutely loved learning about the history of immigration in the local areas. The food was absolutely delicious and true hidden gem spots that you would not otherwise find. I highly recommend this tour to anyone that loves history and loves yummy food. Thank you Greg for such a wonderful and memorable experience!
We had an incredible tour with Bruce, covering a ton of ground, learning a lot of history and tasting a great variety of food. Our 7yo kept up and was entertained and tried a little bit of everything!
Our guide for 11am Mon. April 13,2026 was absolutely amazing! I can not remember his name but far the best guide we have had so far. His knowledge and places he took us to were amazing! Food was great as well.
Fantastic tour. Our guide Greg was very knowledgeable, providing a great historical background and loads of interesting stories. I have lived in NYC for decades and still learned new details about the history of this fabulous city — and discovered a hidden spot for great dumplings.
Bruce is pretty great, knows about his stuff and knosw how to move around the city. He's got patience and makes an great effort for you to understand even when you don't have the best english. So, if you have got the chance to make one of his tours, just take it, yo won't regret it
We loved the Iconic Eats Lower East Side food tour. Our tour guide was knowledgeable and easy to communicate with. There is a lot of walking, so wear comfortable shoes! There is a lot of history on this tour. And not as much food as I expected. There were four bites. However, the price and the deal was so affordable. So I can kind of see it. We loved the dumplings.
We were toured by Bruce today and his knowledge of the specific neighborhoods was infinite. We loved the food that we tasted thanks to him, not only the taste but the history around it. Thank you Bruce for everything ! We loved it !
Excellent tour, covering a wonderful mix of history and fabulous food! Greg did a great job taking care of our group and providing fascinating stories - I learned so much!
I had a fantastic time on the Taste the American Dream / Lower East Side Food Tour with Bruce. Bruce is an incredible guide who knows the neighborhood inside out. He explains the history of the Lower East Side in a way that is both fascinating and very easy to follow. You really feel like you’re discovering the true story of the neighborhood, not just walking through it. The food stops were excellent and very well chosen: Fu Zhou Wei Zhong for dumplings, Nolita Pizza, the legendary Yonah Schimmel Knishery, Mia’s Cocina at Essex Market, and The Pickle Guys. Each stop had its own story and added something unique to the experience. Bruce is friendly, knowledgeable, and passionate about New York and its history. This tour was one of the highlights of my stay in NYC. Highly recommended, especially with Bruce as your guide.
We did the lower East side food tour. It was a freezing cold day and yet we thoroughly enjoyed our adventure. Greg is such a knowledgeable and friendly tour guide. I learned more on this tour than any tour I have ever taken. And I have taken quite a few in different places. We learned about the history and the architecture and of the cultures of the people who settled in the area. I’ve actually taken another tour of the lower East side and never learned most of what Greg had to share. He was kind enough to recommend restaurants for us and things to do. It was a wonderful experience and one that we look forward to sharing again with Greg. Some of the other tours that he mentioned to us sounded wonderful and we hope to book again with Greg as our tour guide.
Love love love our guide!! So informative and such great food!! It was amazing!!! Learned so much!! !
We were the only two who showed up the morning of our tour so we got a private experience filled with history and tasty treats. 10/10 recommend Greg!
We enjoyed the tour of Little Italy and Chinatown! Erik was a great guide and possessed LOADS of patience. We were late to the tour and it took a while for us to catch up. He was kind enough check in on us a few times and we were very appreciative. He shared a wealth of information and tooks us to different restaurants and markets to sample treats (like dumplings, knish, italian meats and cheeses). It was very interesting and I highly recommend him. You can tell that he loves what he does and it was a wonderful tour. We hope to run into him again when we book other tours the next time we are in NYC.
My family of four had a great time with Mickey learning all about NYC’s immigrant history and tasting several different foods. It was great having such a knowledgeable and friendly tour guide to introduce us to NYC on the first day of our little vacation from home in San Francisco.
Our walking tour with Bruce was informative and delicious. We delved into the history of NYC from the Five Points neighborhood to Chinatown, the Lower East Side and Nolita. Everything was well organized and Bruce was a never ending font of knowledge about the neighborhood. If you’re looking for a local tour with a hyper local guide this tour is for you!
The tour was very informative and interesting. Micky led us through Chinatown, Little Italy, Soho, and the Lower East Side, telling us fascinating facts about the different areas. In each area, we made a short stop where we were given something to eat. Although it was very cold, the tour was captivating.
Had the great pleasure of having the Intrepid Urban Adventures Tenements Tales and Tastes walking tour with Bruce. He was engaging, SO knowledgable, interesting as well as interested (I was on the tour with locals who learned a great deal about the city they live in) and all with good humor. He also gave us other great ideas of how to experience the city on foot and on ferry. I highly recommend taking this food tour with Bruce. You learn so much not only about NYC but the early history of the U.S. and the immigrants who shaped it.
Overall the experience was great and a little more than anticipated. Tye communication from the tour guide at the beginning was great. His name was Eric. He sent an email night before, then followed up morning of, then checked in when we were running late. We got lost on the subway and managed to get ahold of Eric and he was able to direct us to where the group was so we could link up with them and finish the tour. We got tons of history of NYC with picture visuals of the past and tried 4 different cuisines. He then recommended some other places to try after which were not a disappointment. We also got the most bang for our buck at each of the places and NYC being so expensive, we were ballin on a budget and getting a great experience. Highly recommend!
This is a great tour! Mickey made it completely amazing and rememorable. She had so much knowledge of the history of all the places we visited. Highly recommend!
A unique, informative gastronomic walking tour of the Lower East Side. Bruce was a terrific guide -- extremely knowledgeable, has lived in the neighborhood for decades, has a passion for the food and culture, made it fun and interesting. He was incredibly generous with his time and all of the history and culture that he shared. The food was awesome and such a wide variety -- from fried dumplings at a local 'hole-in-the-wall in Chinatown to cheese & salami in Little Italy...and knishes, empanadas and dill pickles on the Lower East Side...tons of really good food, a great value!
I actually got switched to another tour because no one else signed up for this one. I was sad I wasn't able to do this one, but I went on the Brooklyn tour instead. The Brooklyn tour was fun, but I was hoping for a little bit more of unique foods found in Brooklyn instead of the standard bagel, pizza, etc. I enjoy going on these tours though so I can get a lay of the land and the tour guide was great! I hope that I get to go on the Lower East Side Food Tour another time!
We had an incredible tour with Bruce, such great food and a great way to begin or continue a trip to NYC. Great food and a great time.
Bruce was the perfect tour guide. So knowledgeable, so friendly. The two hours flew by. We saw neighborhoods we had never been to before and probably never would have ventured to without an expert guide like Bruce. Likewise, we had food experiences that were new to all of us. It doesn't get any better than that.
The Lower East Side Food Tour was great. Listening to the guide's stories of old bakeries, churches, and historic sites made it seem as if NYC's American Dream came alive before our eyes. Empanadas, dumplings and Italian delicacies at the four stops - everything tastes great. Being a small group, I got personal attention. There was only a little more walking, so comfortable shoes should be worn.
