Intrepid Museum will host free public viewing parties for more than 50 World Cup matches on Pier 86, providing a dramatic and unique setting to cheer on your favorite team. Multiple large screens will be set up throughout the Pier, with food, beverages, and merchandise available for purchase. Please note, while the viewings on the pier are free, tickets are still required for admission into the museum. See the Intrepid Air Craft Carrier, the Space Shuttle Pavilion, the Growler Submarine, plus watch an 8-minute film entitled 'the Story of Intrepid' and a 15-minute film called 'Kamikaze: Day of Darkness, Day of Light.' Launched in 1943, the former aircraft carrier USS Intrepid fought in World War II, surviving five kamikaze attacks and one torpedo strike. The ship later served in the Cold War and the Vietnam War. Intrepid also served as a NASA recovery vessel in the 1960s. It was decommissioned in 1974, and today is berthed on the Hudson River as the centerpiece of the museum.

Amazing Warship to visit and walk round seeing all the different planes and helicopters on board also has the space shuttle on board which was good to see the history about the ship is really good so give yourself plenty of time to walk round and the added bonus was having The Concorde at the side of the ship which you could visit that as well.
Intrepids history starting in WWII is daunting and a reminder of acts of service during wartime. It’s also an incredible archive of aviation history which allows you to get up and close with some of the most famous military aircraft in history. The Blackbird and Corsair were highlights from the warbirds. Seeing a space shuttle up close and personal is like a childhood dream come true. Growing up with this program in full swing, the highs and lows of the successes and failures felt like we were also so connected to it. We loved this and it’s great to be able to do it at your own pace. Take lots of photos!
Great visit at the Intrepid! We spent almost 4 hours and the time flew by. The Intrepid Museum consists of the Intrepid aircraft carrier with maybe 20 or so aircraft, a submarine, the Enterprise Space Shuttle, and a Concorde supersonic transport. Visitors can walk throughout the hangar deck, flight deck, gun batteries, and several other decks on the Intrepid and there are signs and displays explaining what you see. We took an hour long "Highlights Tour" for an extra charge (our tour leader was Christina, she was great!) and the tour provided a much better context and explanation for what you are seeing. I highly recommend the Highlights Tour. We also saw the outside of the Space Shuttle and got a good explanation of why the Columbia blew up on re-entry, and we walked through the submarine. The submarine walk-through only took maybe 15-20 minutes but it was well worth it (you need to be able to walk through some tight doorways. On the Hangar Deck, every hour on the half hour is a set of movies/videos with smoke special effects describing how two kamikaze planes hit the Intrepid during WW2, and that was very good too. Overall, this is an excellent experience and very highly recommended. You get a discount for being a New York City resident (proof required). There is a separate charge to see the Concord, which we did not do. There are also several 3D and 4D "Experiences" that we did not do, and we don't think we lost out (they looked wildly overpriced and not necessary IMHO).
Eldest son wanted to go to this whilst visiting NYC as he loves naval & aircrafts. Very easy to get to, especially due to the subway. We attended on a wet day & sadly the submarine wasn’t open which was the reason we attended as my son is a submariner himself. Unfortunately this wasn’t communicated on their website but we did enjoy seeing the rest of the displays. We ended up spending about 2 hours here then going to Chelsea Market nearby for lunch. Overall good experience & would recommend for anyone who wants insight into the history of the Intrepid.
Yes this is a great carrier to go to
The Intrepid Museum was a fantastic experience and definitely one of the places I enjoyed most during my trip to New York City. I wasn’t sure what to expect before visiting, but I ended up spending much more time there than I had planned. Walking aboard the Intrepid itself was incredible. Seeing the aircraft on the flight deck up close and being able to explore the ship made the visit feel much more exciting than a traditional museum. I also really enjoyed seeing the different aircraft and learning about their history. There are so many interesting details throughout the museum, and I found myself stopping often to read the information and look around. The submarine was another highlight for me. It was fascinating to see how people lived and worked in such a limited space. Everything was presented in a way that made the history easy to understand, and I think both adults and children would enjoy this museum. Highly recommended if you’re interested in history, aviation, ships, or military technology. A memorable experience and definitely worth adding to your New York itinerary!
Really very historic and great collection of aircraft many additional displays with great VR experience
Real life military retired aircraft
Lots to see and learn, very informative. A lovely way to spend a few hours by the water. A good experience for all.
We visited the Intrepid Museum on September 3rd with the family and had an absolutely amazing experience. The exhibits are incredible, and there was something for every one of us, from the aircraft carrier deck to the space shuttle. It is one of those places where the kids are wide-eyed the whole time and the adults are just as impressed. But what made the day truly special was Nicolas at the front desk. He was warm, friendly, and genuinely happy to welcome us. My son is also named Nicolas, and the two of them looked so much alike it was uncanny. Nicolas laughed and said, "It's like looking into a mirror," and my son absolutely loved it. He talked about it for the rest of the day. That small, kind moment turned a great visit into an unforgettable one. Nicolas, if you ever see this, we just wanted to say hi and thank you. We didn't take a picture, but we won't forget you. You made a family's day. Kudos to you and to the whole Intrepid team. Five stars, and we will definitely be back. If you want a shorter version for a site with a character limit, here's a compact one: Amazing family visit on September 3rd! Great exhibits, but the highlight was Nicolas at the front desk. My son is also named Nicolas and they looked so alike that he joked, "It's like looking into a mirror." My son loved it. Nicolas, if you see this, thank you for making our day. Kudos!
Wow!!! So informational and interesting!! My entire family loved this educational and well displayed museum! Touring this ship was worth every penny! We had not planned to do this excursion and so very glad we did!!
My son is an aerospace engineer and he absolutely loved this. We enjoyed seeing all of it. Would have been nice to see the Concorde cockpit!!
The Intrepid Museum completely exceeded my expectations. We were able to get tickets through Culture Pass from the New York Public Library, which made an already great experience even better. There is an incredible amount to see here. The flight deck is packed with different aircraft, and seeing a Concorde supersonic jet up close was a definite highlight. The exhibits throughout the museum are excellent, including an interactive video experience with immersive elements that was really well done. Being on the Intrepid itself is fascinating, and you also get some fantastic views of the New York City skyline from the deck. There are good cafes inside as well, so it’s easy to spend several hours exploring without needing to leave. I could have spent much more time here. Lots to see, lots to do, and far more interesting and extensive than I expected. A really fun day and definitely worth visiting.
This was a brilliant experience. How often do you get to step foot on a WW2 aircraft carrier? This history of the ship was probably more interesting than the aircraft on display, but that’s no criticism. Looking around the inner workings of the ship was fascinating and eating on board was decent value (for America) and my hot dog was okay. This is well worth a visit.
The size of the aircraft carrier was huge with so much to explore. For anyone who is interested in the sea and planes, this is a good visit to do.
Seeing the exhibits at the Intrepid Museum was one of the highlights of my trip to New York. Having staff that actually served on the Intrepid that you could talk with added to the experience. Some of the exhibits you need to go to first as they may have long queues or need a booking. Visit the submarine and the concord first. My only negative was that some of the staff manning the entrance to some exhibits were quite rude. I understand they need to manage a lot of people but a please and thank-you goes a long way.
Was ok. Nothing else really. Bit underwhelming and staff not very friendly and very pricey. I like planes but was a bit bored if I’m honest. Very nice aircraft ship. Space shuttle was ok.
This was a 10 out of 10. My husband has been wanting to visit this museum for a long time and it did not disappoint. So much history to see.
Thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience but I was lucky enough to go with a father and daughter who had lots of knowledge and were happy to share. On my own it might not have been as productive a visit. Everything was open and we spent most of the day there. There was plenty to see and do and although it was a Sunday, it wasn't too crowded.
We booked our tour directly with the Intrepid because my husband is blind and we were wanting a touch tour. I would highly recommend booking with a guide whether it be with the Intrepid or with TripAdvisor. While you can certainly enjoy this museum in a self-guided format, I was amazed at all that I learned by being with my husband and a knowledgeable guide. This museum is fascinating. There is so much to learn and out of all of the whirlwind tours we took in our 3 days in New York this was the tour that I did not want to end and never checked my watch once. Our guide was so knowledgeable and kind. He answered every question we asked and gave us so much information I would have never even known to ask as well. There are discounted ticket prices available to individuals with disabilities and one companion, so it is worth researching and definitely worth a visit with or without a discount. PS absolutely do not miss the Space Shuttle Enterprise. It’s worth the price of admission alone! PS this is a great museum for kids and tween boys.
The Intrepid Museum is a fantastic place if your main interest is standing on a giant aircraft carrier and thinking, “Wow, this is very large and very American.” The ship itself is impressive, the planes are cool, and the whole setting has plenty of visual drama. It is basically impossible not to be a little impressed by the hardware. Where things get less impressive is the historical storytelling, which feels about as subtle as a brass band in a library. The war exhibits lean so hard into patriotic heroism that you start wondering whether anyone was allowed to say the word “war” without first saluting it. Nuance seems to have been left somewhere on the dock. The suffering, moral ambiguity, and wider context of the conflict are treated with the kind of attention usually reserved for the gift shop. To be fair, if your goal is a museum that makes everything feel bold, brave, and emotionally uncomplicated, then mission accomplished. But if you were hoping for something that also grapples with the messiness of war, you may leave feeling like you just attended a very polished recruitment ad with excellent lighting. So yes: great carrier, great planes, great spectacle. Historical depth? Let’s just say it arrives with all the force of a politely delayed ferry.
Enjoyable. Kids were kind of into it for the first 1-2 hours and then started losing patience. Overall they had enough there for everyone. VR experience helped out with the little ones. Better than an ice cream museum.
It was interesting to learn a little about the history of the Intrepid, including the World War II Japanese kamikaze attacks that resulted in the deaths of many sailors who were buried at sea and the ship as out of commission for about 3 months before returning to the war. I also was not aware the Intrepid was the recovery ship for early NASA astronauts.
It was a great thing to do on vacation. My son loves airplanes when we got to the location there's parking lot near by. But the boat tour was great lots of things to see and experience. Would definitely recommend this.
It was a wonderfully informative visit. The staff was well informed and very helpful. I would recommend visiting this ship to anyone.
I visited the Intrepid Museum using my Go City card and honestly couldn’t wait to leave. This place could be amazing — the history, the ship itself, the aircraft — but the whole experience feels like a museum frozen in time, and not in a charming way. More like something that hasn’t been updated since it opened in 1982. The layout is confusing and badly thought out. Instead of feeling immersive or educational, it’s just a series of disconnected spaces that don’t flow or tell a story. Everything feels cluttered, dated, and strangely boring for a museum that should be full of energy and excitement. The top deck was very slippery in the rain. Even the signage and displays look tired. To make matters worse, the place felt dirty and worn down, like it hasn’t had a proper revamp in years. With the right investment and imagination, this could be one of New York’s standout attractions — but right now it’s just a missed opportunity. I left disappointed, underwhelmed, and honestly relieved to leave. If you’re using a Go City card, there are far better ways to spend your time.
Fantastic value for money and a wonderful opportunity to look around intrepid!! The military aeroplanes on display have been restored to stunning condition and the chance to visit the submarine was the icing on the cake! Would definitely recommend.
Great history and a lot to see. plan a few hours. The good: We were all seniors and one of us lives in NYC; therefore, we were able to get significant admission discounts. The museum is on and in the Intrepid. The presentations inside give a great history of the ship and its functions, as well as its contributions to history. As an aircraft carrier, it also doubles as an air museum with displays of many aircraft including a space shuttle. There is a snack bar below decks with basic fare. there are a couple of gift shops if you are so inclined. The not so good: It can be crowed at times especially is some places like the climb to the bridge. Take your time, go with the flow. Worth the trip is you are in Manhattan, particularly if you like the history.
We visited on memorial day and attended the ceremony to honour the fallen. It was very moving and educational with great speakers including the NYC Mayor. The scale of the ship is unbelievable with the bonus of a Space Shuttle, Concorde and Submarine on site to compliment the many aircraft and exhibits, with detailed narrative / signage. So many opportunities for great photos. I should also say that the staff on site were very approachable and helpful. Enjoy!
It was interesting. The experience could be as short (just walk through) or as long (if you stop & read every plaque) as you want. We got to get pictures sitting in a MASH helicopter or sitting on a military barber chair. My husband enjoyed the submarine the most especially talking to the retired veterans inside who were able to answer questions about the sub. I felt very small on the deck of the Intrepid but very tall when going through the bulk heads in the sub.
Terrific venue right on the Hudson. Great history, loved the aircraft. The Enterprise shuttle was awesome.
The museum is spectacular. From the entrance, the service is excellent with a warm welcome, including the security checks, which are very friendly. The museum areas are beautifully maintained, and the attractions are enjoyable for both children and adults, especially the G-Force simulator. The experience of being on an aircraft carrier is incredible. Highly recommended.
Our family had a great time checking out the entire museum. Great interactive exhibits and history. Very well done
This experience was so cool! Went through the submarine tour, explored the aircraft carrier, saw the space shuttle Enterprise, and spent a few hours just taking everything in. Walking through the submarine was probably one of the craziest parts of the experience because it really puts into perspective how people lived and worked in such tight spaces for long periods of time. It also really makes you appreciate those service folks to are willing to sacrifice for us. Def a must see if you’re visiting NYC.
Perfect for the family, especially for kids that enjoy military planes and ships. Kids love how interactive it was; even had some virtual reality experiences. We spent about 3 hours but could easily have spent longer. So much to see and so much to learn about the history. There was the air craft carrier. But we didn’t even have time to see the submarine or the space shuttle. Well definitely come back again.
Lots of interactive displays. The static aircraft are great to see. The Apollo 11 VR experience is so awesome. A must do. Overall well worth the trip.
Has a gift shop. Interactive simulations that you pay for. Submarine. Cafeteria. Concorde and a Space Shuttle. Family friendly. Clean and smelling good restrooms. There is a parking alot across the street but you need to reserve it. Can be accessed by pedestrian line or a skywalk. See images for reference.
It was a very interesting experience, and the staff was great. The submarine was the highlight of the visit. One thing to improve: the aircraft are very old. It is time for some newer models
I found buying the tickets online as overly complicated.Having arrived hungry we went straight to the cafe.I feel they were missing a trick here as the cafe is really underwhelming.I can only eat dairy free food. The only thing I could find to eat was a hot dog sausage without the bun and chips. It wasn’t great. They really need to do a vegan/ vegetarian offering. The big ship was well laid out and informative. We had chosen to self lead and we enjoyed some of the inter active things. We had paid extra to go on the Concorde which we really liked and was quite an experience.
The museum is fine, but their ticketing policy is absurd. I purchase tickets for my family (husband, kid, grandparents), but wasn't planning to join them. The museum wouldn't let them use the tickets because my name is on the tickets. Aside from air travel there is no other business / venue / museum that has such a nonsensical policy of named, non-transferrable tickets. On top of that they give you only a half hour window for entry.
This can only be a 5 star review. The intrepid is a sizeable beast that thank the lord someone decided many moons ago to save and make into a floating museum The museum allows people to touch try and enjoy some of the items within the museum. We spent about an hour and 30 minutes. The add on for photos are expensive. Mike the true “English man in New York” amazed us with his knowledge but also his real life experience within the “forces”!! Fantastic venue, a must do if in NYC
Oh my goodness save your money. I am a retired military veteran and it’s an embarrassment what they have done here. The price of admission is ridiculous for what you get to see. I have toured many Navy ships and this one is the worst by far. You get to see a tiny fraction of the ship. Anyone with have a brain can see that some of the areas are staged and not real. The “mess hall” The officers quarters, The junior enlisted bunks. They haven’t used racks like that since it was built. If you want to see a great museum ship. Go to San Diego and get the Midway Museum. That one actually shows you the ship. Not some made up crap. The flight deck is mostly taken up by the space shuttle. So you go into the area and they want you to buy more crap.
You climb 3 very steep ladders/stairs to get to the carrier control rooms; then you get out by going down one ladder BACKWARDS!
Was looking forward to this museum. Highly recommended by a tour guide, looked great from the street. Booked tickets online night before for 11am. Arrived at 10.50am to be told the top deck was closing at 11am - no explanation - just yelled at to leave top deck as deck was closing. Top deck was going to be the highlight for us to view the space shuttle Enterprise. Security staff extremely rude. Would've been great if we had been able to view what we paid for. Rip off - watch out all.
Was very educational for me my husband was excited was his first time in New York city. Bring your children I regret not bringing my 7 year old son
We took the 1 hour tour to help us navigate some highlights. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable and interesting. We arrived 1/2 hour early and did the flight deck first not knowing what the tour covered I wish I had gone up to the bridge in my extra time because that wasn’t covered. Also, the gun batteries on the side of the ship looked cool but weren’t included in the tour. You did get access to ride the plane elevator which was cool to experience. There is no charge to see the space explorer, and you only view the outside but the pavillion is cool and interesting to see We didn’t add submarine or virtual experience s but people seemed to enjoy them. We planned a two hour visit and we could have stayed much longer. Clean place, well organized, nice bathrooms and food options , parking is a challenge as the convenient parking across the highway is closed for renovation. The bridge across the highway is helpful and great views from that height.
Inliked it no stroller parking difficult for younger kids. Loved tonsee veterans working there
Great place for someone with interest in military, American History or airplanes. It was kids week so there were a lot of extra activities for smaller children. We made it through (sans kids week activities) the ship and submarine in about 3 hours. Due to the time of year and crappy weather (cold heavy rain) and no lines we didn't have to wait more than 5 mins for anything. We will go back again as several family members mentioned interest when we got home. Its clear that better weather brings much much larger crowds and with it longer lines.
Great museum with lots of planes. We also got to visit during kids’ week and there were so many hands on activities which were fab.
