Gary does an amazing job!! This tour is in-depth and very detailed. It’s not just a history of the NYC subway- it’s a history of NYC and all the various factors that made the subway system what it is today. Our tour was 3 hours long and was so informative and interesting!! I would highly recommend this tour if you want to dive in depth into NYC and the subway system!! Gary is very funny and so knowledgeable it is crazy!!

Gary is the best! His knowledge is nothing short of incredible, and he made every minute of our tour interesting with amazing details and colorful storytelling. His knowledge of the history of New York and every aspect of the subway system is truly amazing.
Gary was an amazing tour guide! Fascinating tour!! Would definitely recommend. I went with my brother, mother in law and 21 year old daughter. Kids and teenagers may find it not quite as interesting.
I really enjoyed Gary's guided underground New York subway tour. Whether you have a lot of experience and knowledge of the subway or this is your first experience, Gary knows a ton. He has pictures, engaging questions and a really fun show-and-tell experience including seeing an abandoned station on the Lex Avenue line (that was my favorite part of the tour). Plus Gary is not only passionate about his subject but also funny. Would highly recommend.
Great experience. Guide knowledgeable and attentive to our needs and questions. Filled with many little facts unknown to us
Gary is amazing! He steeped us in the history of the subway/train system before we even set foot in the subway itself. His knowledge and visual aids on his tablet made for an engaging and enlightening tour. We will definitely be looking him up again for some of his other tours. There were just three of us on our tour so it felt extra personal and intimate. If you live in NYC or are visiting, don’t miss out on this fabulous subway tour with Gary!
Gary was a great tour guide, with lots of information. The use of the photos on his ipad added valuable context to what he was talking about. Our group of five ranged in ages 18-55 and he ensured everyone was engaged throughout, through jokes and TV/Movie location references. Highly recommend this tour
Gary my guide was very knowledgeable and funny .. we are New Yorkers and learned a lot of things I never knew and it was very interesting.. I would definitely suggest it to tourist and people from New York if you wanna know the history .. I did think we were supposed to see areas that the public doesn’t go too but he explained that from the beginning that those are completely different tickets
A few weeks ago, I signed up for a subway tour; sounded cool. Well, let me tell you that it was great! Gary is a wonderful tour guide,He is knowledgeable and engaging. the tour was just the right amount of time. After this morning, I will see the subway in a totally different way.
Guide Gary was very knowledgeable and did a great job!!!! We enjoyed it very much. Kids with me….ages 12, 16, 17. We all learned a good bit about the subway.
Great pictures Gary did a great job -I really enjoyed the tour and learned a lot -it was a lot of fun -I’ll definitely do it again
Gary was unscripted and his knowledge of the city and the subway system is amazing. I was not bored for a second. I recommend his tour highly and might do another with him soon.
I was very disappointed in this tour. We all were really looking forward to seeing parts of the subway system most people don’t usually see or pay attention to and towards the end we did finally see some unusual artwork. The problem is that for half of the 2.5 hr time we were with the tour guide all we did was listen to him talk ( standing ) about the evolution of the subway cars. He had a prepared speech and no matter how load the noise was around us he proceeded weather we could hear or not. Gary is a very personable man obviously knows almost everything there is to know about the history of the NYC subway system but it would be so much more enjoyable if he would ask “ is there something in particular you would like to know about on this tour “. To me the evolution of the subway car should have been a small part not the main part of the presentation.
This tour is one of the best tours we've ever taken! Gary was extremely knowledgable about everything New York subway. He provided pictures to accent the stories he told. I'd be willing to bet we have seen and know more about the subway than most New Yorkers. I could have listened to his stories all day. I highly recommend this tour. You won't be sorry.
We really loved Gary, my twelve year old learned a lot from him. He is fun and is funny, with great knowledge in addition to all of that.
Gary was our tour guide for a 5 day trip so we got in a lot of good quality Gary time. He’s funny, interesting, so knowledgeable. Gary helped us get everywhere we needed to go safely and kept us entertained in transit. Ask lots of questions because Gary’s got lots of great answers. Definitely a great tour guide!!!
This tour was a great way to learn more about the NYC subway. It was a private tour with Gary. He was great and shared lots of interesting details. If you have an interest in the NYC subway and its history, I highly recommend this tour! I plan to book another tour with Gary on our next visit to the Big Apple!
The tour was fantastic!!! I would certainly go on the tour again when I am next in NYC. Garry is extremely knowledgeable and articulate, also great with kids
The original art/tile work in the subway. Plus the restored ceiling in Grand Central vs the unrestored piece.
Gary was fantastic providing us a great review of the history of the subway, and a better understanding of how to use the subway. His has enabled us to make much better use of the NY Subway!!!! This is a highly recommended tour!!!!
As born and bred New Yorkers, and users of the NYC subway system, we were excited and amazed to learn so much about its history, from the 19th Century to present time. Gary, our guide, made the tour fun and informative. He talked about: how it got started, who were the men behind it all, how the NYC government played a part in it, what countries and states influenced them, and the different types of engines and materials used to make the train cars throughout the decades. Plus, other interesting tidbits and newsworthy facts about the subway stations and tunnels. This tour brought back fond memories of us traveling the different trains and subway lines of our youth. Gary instructed us to look up, down and around the subway stations to see the beautiful craftsmanship, murals, art and tiles that is and has been part of its history. Which is easily missed when you are rushing to get to your train. Whether you are a born New Yorker or new to the city, this amazing tour is one that shouldn't be missed. The time just "speeds" and you don't want it to end. Thank you Gary for an enjoyable experience! by R. Festa
Gary deserves more than five stars. He gave us the background and rich history of what has lied below our feet and what we had taken for granted for so long. the tour was great value.
Best tour with the best tour guide! Gary was a wealth of knowledge on the NY subway system, it's history and workings.
Gary was incredible!! I don’t know how he is able to keep such a depth of knowledge from memory. His tour was informative and super interesting. I’d definitely recommend him and this tour.
This tour was excellent. If you are interested in the history of New York City and/or the history of the elevated/subways of New York, this is the tour to take. Gary is a wealth of knowledge on both and is able to tie them together so you understand the progression of both the city starting at the tip of the island and moving uptown and how the transportation system grew as the city did – along with all of the problems and obstacles that were put on the companies building the elevates and the subway. Gary spent nearly 3 hours with us and I wish that we could have stayed with him for another 3 hours as he knows so much and you want to know it all.
This tour was EXCELLENT!!!! And so reasonably priced. Gary is just a wealth of information on the New York City subway system and he loves to share it . He talked nonstop for three hours and gave us such a history of the subway system . He was personable , pleasant and answered all of our questions and listened to.our comments . I would highly recommend this tour to anyone . There were a group of six of us and the only issue we had is that at the beginning , because he had to give us so much history , we stood in one spot for about 40 minutes , which was very tiring . It might it may have been easier if we were walking around a bit instead of standing in one spot . Once we started touring the subway system itself it was easier.
We were a group of four on a Saturday morning and we grew up, lived, worked and have played in NYC, yet this tour still taught us things we didn’t know about what is right under our noses. Informative, entertaining, and hilariously funny, Gary, our tour guide, made three hours disappear! The tour starts in front of City Hall downtown and ends in Grand Central terminal. You do need a metro card for getting on the subway, which you can buy in any subway station. I highly recommend this tour, even for locals.
Gary is a great storyteller and his knowledge of NYC and the subway system is impeccable. Re-kindled my love for the subways even after having lived here for more than two decades. The tour is long, so be prepared to exercise your standing muscles. But totally worth it if you have the fortitude.
Interesting tour. Gary, our tour guide was excellent. Very knowledgeable about the history of the subway system. Loved that we ended up in Grand Central Station.
enjoyed it. nice small (private) tour. Gary knows his stuff and was feeding information for a full 3 hours. If you want a history of the subway system including the political gossip as to the "how" or "why" this is the tour.
I travel a lot and have taken many tours. I think this was the best I've ever taken. Gary was an amazing storyteller. He brought his ipad and used visuals to enhance his stories even more. He knows so many facts about NY history, people, and places. He is passionate about the info, not going thru the motions or dialing it in. He was so kind to my teenage son as well. I will recommend this tour to all friends and family going to NYC. It is so worth it!!!
This tour was one the best things we did in New York. It was entertaining, informative and interesting and our guide Gary was fantastic! I cannot recommend this tour enough!
I'm not sure what the rave reviews are about. We have the same tour guide. True Gary is very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the subway history in NY and shared very interesting facts. The tour starts at the Brooklyn Bridge. He shows the 115 year old subway tile and a couple pieces of artwork. I thought this is going to be good, it's exactly what I thought it would be. That's where it stops. He takes us down a hallway and stops in an open area under ground. It has got to be brutal in the summer. There were three mural type displays on they wall. I thought he would explain what those where, nope, not even a mention. We stood in that spot for 45 minutes listening to him speed talk his way through a 100+ years of history and showed us pictures on his ipad. If you could keep up and where close enough you would have heard a very rich history of the underground. I wanted to see more of the hidden artwork and architecture. Because of that 45 minute stand still history lesson, it put a big wet blanket on the rest of the experience which was very underwhelming. We paid $40 each and I'm glad we didn't pay more or I would have asked for a refund.
Gary had great information on the history of the subway, and was able to answer questions I had as well.
Our guide Gary was terrific - so knowledgeable and passionate about the history of the NYC underground! It was so interesting. We could have spent another 1/2 day learning more!
Gary was a tremendous guide and a wealth of knowledge. His knowledge and the pace at which he shared was perfect. the photos coupled with what you were looking at right in front of you gave not only a history lesson but in some way helped connect you with the past. Tthere were places we pass through every day that now have a whole new meaning. It was a great experience and well worth it.
Gary is the MTA's greatest ambassador, he loves the subject and it really comes through in his presentation. He brings you through the history of the formation of the subway and how it all came together to create what we have today. We really enjoyed this tour and highly recommend it!!
Gary, our tour guide was very knowledgeable and super passionate about the city and the history. Would recommend him every time.
We paid Gary unproven in advance via Paypal, so we did not have to deal with cash. Meeting point easy to find, super punctual. Gary showed us the Metro with a passion - history not too much, just right. Extraordinary stories, architecture, hidden stations, art and closed access. One of the highlights of our New York trip!
Gary’s passion for New York and the subway system shines through on this tour. We went over a lot of information including the why, where and who made the NY Subway what it is today. Armed with pictures from the past and a wealth of information Gary helped the subway system come to life. We learned a bit of history, saw some of the original art that was carelessly destroyed to make improvements. There are still secrets that the subway holds, and I was glad to learn a few of them. Gary has a delightful personality, informative and he kept us wanting more. We were a small group, a mom and two twenty something kids. I believe Gary is great for all ages and can make any tour fun and interesting. The tour was easy to set up online and the communication organizing tours, times and dates was extremely easy. (We also did the Central Park Tour.)
Gary gave huge insight, information and history of the subway system. He has a great personality and makes it a lot fun even for a 14 year old. Lots of fun stories mixed in. I highly recommend it! Thanks for a great tour, Gary!
Grear tour guy! Gary was very informative and an awesome guide. Great tour to learn about the trains and how it all got started.
This tour exceeded my expectations....Gary was beyond knowledgeable -- a true historian! He was witty, engaging and was able to answers questions about the subway and everything in NYC. My whole family thoroughly enjoyed this tour. Gary had pictures that went along with his explanations which really did help communicate the progression of the subway system. We would all take another tour with Gary!
My sister surprised me with this tour for my birthday. Gary had numerous pictures of and a wealth of knowledge of the history and archeticture of the NYC subway. He guided us into and on various subway stations including the Shuttle & Grand Central and 42nd Street. He held our interest throughout the tour. I would highly recommend this tour & plan on other NYC tours with him. As his card said - Gary is a authentic New Yorker.

Fabulous tour guide. Deeply knowledgeable about the subways and NYC history. Engaging manner. Tailored tour to our group. We had lots of fun and learned a lot. Book this tour!!!!

We expected to be doing a lot of walking in the old subways only to find out that it is illegal. There was a lot of time sitting on a bench while the guide very knowledgable went over pictures on his computer. Would have been better walking and looking, that's why we booked the trip.

Still had a relatively good time despite not being what we signed up for.

Great tour! Gary took time to answer our questions and provide history and background. I would highly recommend this tour for rail fans, history buffs, and those interested in getting some background about the system that moves the city.

Gary is spectacular!!! Highly recommend for tourists and New Yorkers alike!

If you are into train and or NYC history this is a wonderful tour.
