Two friends and I did the Gilded Age Walking Tour on Sunday, October 25th 2026. Ross Horowitz was our tour guide. He was knowledgeable, engaging, and brought the history to life. Many of us on the tour are fans of The Gilded Age tv show, and he related aspects of the tour to the show. I highly recommend this tour to anyone interested in history, beautiful architecture and a peek into New York’s glamorous past. A fun way to see the city.
Ben was an excellent tour guide - very personable, welcoming and engaging. He was extremely knowledgeable about the history (people, places, events) of that time in New York City. Note that there is only one building in which you go inside to see an interior space (all of the other stops on the tour are exterior only)
I booked this tour for a group of 55+ empty nesters which I run for several affiliated synagogues in Nassau County. The people at Untapped (primary contact was Justin Rivers) were extremely efficient, polite and flexible and accommodated my needs (of which there were many) completely. Questions and requests were handled extremely quickly. And our tour guide, Richard Soden, was very personable and knowledgeable. Not only did he share thousands of facts and stories but he also came with a laptop filled with great old photographs of interiors and exteriors of many mansion. AND, when we asked numerous questions which were not directly related to the Fifth Avenue mansions, he answered every question so thoroughly that it seemed like he had a microchip implanted in his head or that he had an AI feed. I cannot say enough about this tour and every single person in my group felt exactly the same way. Thank you Untapped for a really great experience.
Great experience. Highly reccommended.
An intriguing and facinating tour about the not so long ago history and wealth of powerful families in NY. The tour is fast paced and full of fun facts. Richards is extremely knowledgeable on the subject. Highly recommend!
What a great tour. Laura our guide was fantastic and well versed in the complex content of the tour. And she was a trouper given it was sooooooo cold. I think there has been a renewed interested of late of this period so it is popular and I would HIGHLY recommend whether you are coming after seeing period movies or televisions shows or simply enjoy the history and architecture of NYC, Thank you fou hosting us. It was a treat!
We were a group of 5 women who took the Gilded Age tour with Ro as our tour guide. Ro was engaging, very knowledgeable and kept our attention for the two hour tour. I highly recommend this experience.
Took the Gilded Age Mansion tour with Richard. Very informative and friendly. He's an NYC resident and has some good personal views. Easy meet up location and good pace. Richard was always asking for questions and happy to answer them. Enjoyed this tour. Thanks Richard
Enjoyed our guide Rose very much. She was very knowledgeable and very personable. We learned a lot about the moneyed people during the guilded age.
Richard did an amazing job leading our tour of the Gilded Age Mansions in NYC. He was knowledgable and made our tour fun and interesting with lots of little tid bits of gossip, bad behaviour and society news sprinkled in. We had a tour of an exhibit at the Met first and Richard did a wonderful job of reversing the typical tour which heads north on 5th Avenue - to a tour that led south so we could start from the Met. It was a great way to spend the afternoon.
Enjoyed the tour of the mansions on fifth Avenue and learned a lot of interesting facts. Our tour guide Richard was full of information and very knowledgeable.
Richard gave a great tour. He was extremly knowledgeable and anticipated all the interesting facts that we might want to know.
A truly unique and eye-opening tour. As a fellow NYC tour guide, I can appreciate our guide Cullen Brown's professional expertise and passion for his subject, as well as the effort required to make his sometimes demanding content so accessible and entertaining. Cullen's enthusiasm is contagious, and I know my friends and I will henceforth look at the city's energy infrastructure -- and its shoreline -- with fresh understanding and appreciation. Thanks, Cullen!
Though none of the buildings on Fifth Avenue were used in the filming of that series, we got to hear how these rich people lived. Our guide was so knowledgeable and patiently answered all questions. Hearing who lived where and on Fifth Avenue was so interesting. He pointed out the architect and the styles of many beautiful buildings. He gave a history of how Fifth Avenue became occupied and when by wealthy families in large homes built just for them. We also stopped at two places I wouldn't have thought of or known about even though I live in the city. The first was a statue along the Park of Richard Morris Hunt, the architect of the Metropolitan Museum of Art among other important buildings, and the 2nd building was part of the French Embassy which once housed an original Michelangelo sculpture (replaced by a copy).
This tour was exactly what we were looking for. Some of us were fans of the HBO series “Gilded Age,” some are just interested in the history. This tour had an excellent balance of both leaning toward the actual history. Richard was a superb guide: knowledgeable, friendly and extremely well-prepared. The pics he had to show what was in buildings we couldn’t enter or which are no longer there were essential to our understand. The tour length (2 hrs) was just right, too.
This was an interesting tour with a difference, learning about the Gilded Age Mansions of yesteryear along 5th Ave, built by the city's ultra-rich founding fathers, many of which no longer exist. Rhiannon, our guide, did a great job and knew her subject very well. We walked from site to site where the mansions used to be, where she'd explain the history, but rather than a building to look at, she would show us period photos on her tablet. The photo selections were good and brought the topic to life. Having done similar tours in other cities where what you went to see was still there, this felt a little odd to begin with. However, Rhiannon was very engaging, made the topic intriguing and interesting, and soon the whole group was hanging on every word. Fortunately, there were several buildings still in existence that gave us a great sense of what has been lost in the others. We were able to enter two, which are now repurposed, and the small inside glimpse we got helped us appreciate the grandeur that once existed in these amazing homes. Rhiannon supplied each of us with an earpiece so we could hear her, and that made a big difference, given the noisy New York traffic. My wife and I and another couple attended this tour, along with about six other people. We all enjoyed it, and judging by the number of questions Rhiannon received at the end, people were keen to know more. I would heartily recommend this tour to anyone interested in the city's earlier history.
Richard was amazing. So knowledgeable, friendly and approachable. Always asking if we had any questions and checking how people were.
This is a two hour walking tour of the area that was part of the era called the Guilded Age that spanned from 1880 to 1910 in Manhattan. Richard was our guide and he was knowledgeable about so many details of the people who inhabited these fabulous homes such as the Vanderbilts, Astors, etc. The tour was a history lesson as well as a unique experience.
Great tour! Our guide Richard was great very knowledgeable and great stories! I recommend this tour and ask for Richard if you do!!
Richard was a knwledgeable and very engaging guide who brought the gilded age to life. Despite the very cold weather, the tour was fascinating, and we learned so much about mansions that were gone and a few still in existence. The guide's iPad had many photos and maps that illuminated his explanations.
We loved the tour. Our guide was very knowledgeable & interesting! The walk included stops at various spots where gilded age mansions once stood.
The tour was excellent. Alexis knew her facts and the history of the mansions was pretty amazing. In spite of the street closures we managed to walk around and find the sev=crets that lay between the modern buildings.
The tour, which lasted two hours, began at the Plaza and ended 15 blocks north near the Frick museum. During our walk we learned much about the Astors, Vanderbilts, and other families who owned mansions along fifth avenue. We heard interesting and often humorous stories about the intense and often petty social competition between families. We learned about two of the architects, Richard Hunt and Stanford White, who built many of the homes. Our tour guide, Bob G. was knowledgeable and friendly and answered all our questions. He really made the tour. It was a thoroughly enjoyable and we highly recommend it.
