I joined a sushi-making class in Nara that went far beyond the usual tourist experience. Instead of simply shaping sushi, I was invited to step into the chef’s working space — to hold the knife myself and learn how to slice the fish under the guidance of a professional sushi master. Even the wasabi wasn’t the typical green powder. I got to grate it fresh from real wasabi root, releasing a fragrance and spiciness that felt completely different from what I had known before. Every step was handled with care, and the chef’s explanations were clear and patient. It truly felt like learning from a real artisan rather than just taking part in a short class. Compared with other sushi experiences I’ve joined before, this one was much deeper and more genuine. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to learn the true spirit of Japanese sushi craftsmanship — not just make sushi, but understand it.

Authentic sushi-making class with friendly and attentive instructors. You will put on a Japanese traditional festival coat called “happi coat” as you make your sushi. The ingredients are super fresh, delicious and not fishy at all. It’s beginner-friendly and you will make wonderful memories there.
My husband and I had a wonderful private sushi making class today, taught by Tossy. He was fun and informative and really made the class a pleasure. We got to eat our sushi creations and everything was delicious! Thank you, Tossy, for this unique and special experience!

I loved the energy of the employees! Such a lovely vibe, and the steps to make them were easy and fun. I also love how we got to wear the cooking attire.
Delicious sushi and so much fun! Everyone was very welcoming and kind. They give you a jacket and hat, which makes it fun. They also provided us with udon soup and miso soup to join our sushi. Definitely come to have a memorable experience!

We got to put on special Sushi chef costumes for the sushi lesson. The hosts/ teachers were super enthusiastic and fun and made sure we all had a really great time!
Had an amazing time making our own sushi! Great atmosphere and teachers! Everyone was super pleasant and very helpful!
This was a fun night. It was a class with only our group. Teacher was very knowledgeable and excited for us to learn. We had fun and learned a lot, including Japanese names for fish we made sushi with, and also had udon soup and drinks (alcoholic ones with dinner available) with our sushi. Fun extra was dressing up in kimono and getting pictures. Our class was in Kyoto. While a bit outside of town, it was only a 25 minute car ride and we walked to the subway (15 mins) to get back to our hotel. Enjoyed seeing what we imagine was a much more residential and quiet part of town. School was very clean, fish superb, and we are glad we did it!
Very friendly staff, fun photo shoot, detailed lesson, and delicious sushi. Highly recommend! Would absolutely go again
Super good time!! The people were very kind and had great energy, and the food was very yummy! I highly recommend, it was a really fun experience. It will definitely be one of the most memorable parts of my Japan trip. Thank you Umemori Sushi School!!! :)

Toshi was amazing, super patient, knowledgeable and kind. We learned about sushi rice, the proper measurement, how to cut the fish and make rolls and ngiri. Super fun experience - Thank You. He also waited for our car to arrive in the rain as one of us didn't have an umbrella <3
Full meal and very informative. It was family event with both understanding the ingredients and the methods. The kids enjoyed it.

Excellent experience. Team was really good and make us very well come. Tought us how to make Sushi 🍣 we tested after and really enjoyed it.
What a great experience learning how to make different types of sushi! Okashi made the experience lots of fun! Dressing up in traditional Japanese clothes and learning words and actions to make traditional sushi. I would recommend for anyone no matter what your cooking skills are!
Making sushi was so much fun and we learned a lot. Our teachers were knowledgeable and spoke enough English to answer our questions and guide us. The location was easy to find and the directions provided were very helpful.
Very good experience. I liked the enthusiasm of the teachers and the atmosphere was good. Everyone is dedicated to making sushi, sushi is fresh, paper pot is delicious, and the purple leaf and leaf roo in Tianjin Lo is also very delicious, not to eat elsewhere. But the food portion is a little bit, I and my friends can't eat out 🙏🏻 Thank you for the welcome, a nice day. ra-shya!
The experience was great. The chef we taught, Ogo, was very attentive and funny, learned how to make a lot of sushi, provided fresh and varied ingredients, couldn't eat a whole eel, harvested a lot, and gave us sake.
