The description online is close but not complete Located in the Naramachi section of Nara about 10-15 min walk from the deer park and temple complex The experience begins with a tasting of 5 different types of green tea, then nearly a complete tea ceremony with each of us making our own matcha tea and learning the history and techniques of matcha Our instructor spoke English very well and gave us suggestions on how to spend the remainder of the day Would recommend for teens and adults, not really for small children. Would be great for families with teens and couples

Itinerary
Compare five Nara-grown teas side by side, then move into the ceremony itself - from knowing tea to whisking a bowl of it, in one line. You do not simply learn the etiquette; you taste your bowl knowing the thinking behind omotenashi and the utensils. Nara makes Japan's tea whisks, and you take that home too. 1. You step into a machiya in Naramachi, where a host in kimono welcomes you into a tatami room lit through shoji. 2. Five Nara-grown teas are laid out side by side. Tasting them in turn, you explore each through aroma, flavour and roast. 3. Next, the basic etiquette and the thinking behind it - how to bow, how to handle the utensils. A seasonal wagashi (traditional Japanese sweet) is served, enjoyed by eye before tongue. 4. Your host whisks a bowl for you; take time with the scent, colour and finish. We then talk about the culture tea has shaped, and omotenashi at the centre of it. 5. Choose the bowl you like, warm your hands with hot water, then whisk your own matcha. 6. We show you how a chasen is made in Takayama in Nara, the source of some 95% of Japan's handmade tea whisks. 7. If you like, your Nara-born host will point you to shops and lanes no guidebook lists.

This was really interesting experience Mike was really knowledgeable. My son and I enjoyed the tea ceremony and learnt a lot. Thank you Mike
"Mike" was an excellent teacher of "tea." We learned so much. Doing the side by side tasting was very good in understanding the different teas. Mike was very patient in answering our questions. We now have an appreciation of the nuances of Japanese tea ceremony. It was fun trying to whisk our own macha.
I couldn't recommend this experience enough if you're a tea/matcha fanatic! The tutors were incredibly knowledgeable and friendly. They teach you the origins and significance of a traditional tea ceremony. The entire experience was very calming, a welcomed change from the hustle and bustle of Tokyo! At the end of the experience they give you insider tips on what to do/where to eat/bars to visit in Nara - because of that I highly recommend starting your day in Nara with this experience - all of the recommendations were fantastic. If you want to immerse yourself in Naras scene and culture, book this experience!
Mike is very sweet. He is very knowledgeable and he was great with kids. He really tries to make it a very personalized experience.
This was awesome! My host was super informative and helpful when it came to discussing different tea options and traditional tea ceremonies! He was also just super fun to chat with! I would highly recommend this tour to anyone who has the chance while visiting Nara!
The best tea ceremony experience I have ever had! I never expected to have a friendly and knowledgable senpai! The activity was fun and enjoyable! Highly recommend!
Really great experience. Mike was knowledgeable and very kind. We had different type of teas in a traditional setting and had the opportunity to make our own matcha tea. Also Mike was very nice to give us some giveaway. Also, he was super helpful in getting recommendations around the city Highly recommended for a relaxing day with informative conversation
You can enjoy Japanese tea and some traditional sweets! The guys working there were nice and kind. They taught us where should we visit in Nara.
My husband and I had a great time doing the tea tasting! It was really interesting to try the various types of tea. I would highly recommend it.
This was an absolutely wonderful experience - I wish we did it at the beginning of our trip! We were greeted by the most kind and welcoming host, Mike, and he gave us a really nice tasting experience and explanations of the tea’s we tasted, how they’re made, what they’re eaten with, and all the social Japanese background of it all too. We took back with us great suggestions for places to visit, the tea we loved the most, great stories/conversation, and wonderful memories. We were very pleased with it all - def recommend! :)
An amazing personalised experience. Mike was a wonderful host and spoke excellent English. The tea was fantastic as was the dessert. Mike was very knowledgeable about tea and really elevated our experience, and sharing Japan’s history with tea. Mike also provided us amazing recommendations for where to visit in Nara, what to eat (he was right about the best Ramen). We purchased a few extra items as everything is locally made and was so beautiful. I wish we had more space in our luggage to take home more. Our baby was having a great time too, even though he can’t drink tea yet. This was the highlight of our trip. We would 100% do this again and again. Thank you for an awesome afternoon. We loved every second of it.
Amazing experience, learnt so much about Tea. Sake and Japanese culture, all in a friendly and authentic environment. Got so many great recommendations for other places to visit too. 5 stars! Would recomend to anyone.
This was one of my favorite experiences in Japan, I learned A lot about tea and what goes to the conservation and got some awesome recommendations for things to do for Mike later in my trip. He even let us try some sake. All this wonderful experience and I recommend anybody who finds themselves in Nara
This tea ceremony was exceptional! Our guide picked us up at the Nara station so we did not need to search which was extremely helpful. He was helpful and patient since we arrived a little late. The place is private in a small house close to the station, lovely decorated and gave us a very home feeling. The guide explained everything very detailed and went out of his way to answer all your questions. It was an amazing experience. He does sell products from his place but there was no pressure to buy something. He told us a lot about Nara and the history of the town. At the end he gave us detailed recommendations what to see in Nara. I can highly recommend his place for a traditional tea ceremony!
My boyfriend and I are from LA and we attended this event on a very cold day in Nara and it was just what we needed! We were able to sample so many teas and the snacks were great too! The hosts were incredibly funny and so accommodating which was so nice.
Exciting experience with having to try the different tea variations and experience the difference between them. When the master brewed the selected tea, it became even better and got a creamy taste.
I had a wonderful experience of meeting various kinds of tea that I cannot touch every day! The staff are friendly and enjoy the tea. He also told me about many Recommendations for sightseeing in Nara. Don't miss out on this opportunity!
You could feel the particularity of each tea. The comparison of tea drinking was very interesting and I learned a lot from each taste and flavor. I highly recommend it.
I was able to have a relaxing experience in a relaxing space and had a wonderful time. The cost performance was also excellent considering the service provided.
I tried comparing different types of tea in the afternoon. I was able to try five different types and discovered some new teas for the first time. The place was a Japanese atmosphere that suited Japanese tea, and it was relaxing and fun. I'd like to introduce it to my friends when I go sightseeing in Nara!
