Itinerary
Let us explore together the Archaeological Park of Herculaneum, a UNESCO site and one of the best-preserved ancient cities in the world. Ancient Herculaneum was buried during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD and is a true place of memory: although less extensive than nearby Pompeii, unlike the latter it still bears most of its urban and civic structure. Houses, doors and bedrooms, workshops and objects of all kinds are still perfectly visible. Walking along the paved streets together with your guide will be a unique experience: you will immerse yourself in the daily life of the ancient Herculaneum civilization. You will enter their houses, with still unchanged the warm colors of the frescoes; you will visit the gymnasium and the baths, where the ancients gathered to talk about everything, even politics and business. You will feel as if you can sense the smells, sounds and colors of the ancient city! The use of wheelchairs must be reported 24 hours before the visit.
The ancient beach: the only waterfront of an almost entirely preserved Roman city.
The terrace of Marco Nonio Baldo: The ancient city of Herculaneum wanted to honor Marcus Nonius Balbo , its most prestigious citizen and patron, with a terrace overlooking the sea at the time.
House of Deer: It is the richest and finest residence so far found within the excavation area, and owes its name to the two marble groups depicting Deer being attacked by dogs
The House of the Wooden Partition: is so named because of the discovery of a folding wooden structure designed to separate the splendid atrium from the tablinum i.e., the homeowner's study.
House of Neptune and Amphitrite: It belonged to a wealthy merchant where there is the beautiful mosaic of Neptune and Amphitrite his companion.
The Samnite House: it is one of the most popular archaeological remains in Herculaneum, as it is considered one of the oldest dwellings on the site
The decumanus maximus is the main street of Roman cities and therefore also of Herculaneum, and for this reason it housed the most prestigious houses on its sides.
The Sacellum of the Augustals is a building from Roman times used for the rites of worship of emperors, tended by augus priests
Casa D'argo: It owes its name to a now-disappeared fresco that decorated the peristyle depicting Argo Panoptes, the giant with a hundred eyes,
boat pavilion: In this unique exhibition site, a charred boat that was found along the beach of Herculaneum during excavations in 1981 is preserved.

Remarkable!! Herculaneum is a hidden gem that gives you insight as to what Ancient Roman life was like in 79AD. Our guide, Luigi was incredibly knowledgeable, funny, and helped us understand the magnitude of the discovery.
Ornella was brilliant. Really knowledgeable and made the whole tour fascinating and seemed to enjoy answering all our questions.
Very enjoyable. Our guide was very engaging, informative and fun. The site is compact and easy to get around. You can pick up a free map at the kiosk at the entry to the park. Lovely little restaurant on the left-hand side of the road across from the park. Best meatballs we ever tasted ! The tour was easily the highlight of our trip to Italy, and that includes Pompeii, the Colosseum and Rome.
Great day touring this site with a Archaeologist, which made the experience very interesting, a must do with a tour guide and not self guided.
Our guide was a wealth of information and knowledge. So informative with a little humour thrown in! Very easy to understand and open to questions. Be sure to check in correctly prior to the beginning of the tour as we were kept waiting for almost 20 minutes for a small number of people who didn't do this, which was a little frustrating. Wear good sturdy walking shoes and be able to walk up and down steps/stairs.
It was a nice small group tour lead by a very knowledgeable archeologist. His knowledge really added to our experience. He was a little soft spoken so my husband had trouble hearing some of the talk.
The best part was our very knowledgeable guide Riccardo, who made everything come to life. We did wait around a bit as we were a small group of 6 and we were waiting for 3 to arrive. It was a great value tour for the information received! Thank you Riccardo!
Really enjoyed Walking around the archeological site and guide explaining the findings with detail. Amazing discoveries. Museum has original collection of various objects. Preservation of Part of original boat and story behind it was very fascinating. Place must visit.
Such an amazing tour, so insightful and answered any questions we had. The tour guide managed to provide humour to the history and tour, making a real effort to engage everyone.
A great tour, our guide was very knowledgeable about Herculaneum and its past. She also provided info about the differences between Pompeii and Herculaneum. She had a lot of energy and was very passionate about her job. We really enjoyed our tour. Xx
An absolute must do when visiting Herculaneum ruins. We had Arcangelo as our guide and he was extremely knowledgeable, friendly and attentive. It was very easy to find him and without the information he gave us, we wouldn't have a clue what we would have been looking at. I would highly recommend this to anyone.
Loved our tour guide, Raffaele was knowledgeable and friendly. Would highly recommend Raffaele as a tour guide. He brought Herculaneum back to life. Would book this tour again.
Ornella was a fantastic tour guide, very knowledgeable and made it all very interesting. There were only 6 of us tour so made the experience more personal.
Herculaneum’s buildings and artifacts are incredibly well preserved. Being a “resort” town much smaller in scale than Pompeii, it is also a manageable visit that does not require hours of walking to see fascinating points of interest. We took the high speed train from Rome for the day and thoroughly enjoyed the visit. Finally, our guide Riccardo was extremely knowledgeable (being an archaeologist) and was passionate about sharing his insights with us.
Our guide Raffelle was very knowledgable and interesting. Herculaneum is a fascinating place to visit and explore. So different to Pompeii but just as interesting
The guide was fantastic - Raphael was charming, knowledgeable and made our visit so worthwhile and memorable. I couldn’t recommend him more highly
Corrado was excellent! As we wandered through Herculeum he was able to transport us back in time and bring the town and its residents to life
Fantastic tour. The guide spoke excellent English and was very professional with a great sense of humour. All well organised. Our tour was pre booked without entrance tickets at 1600 hrs. We arrived at 1550 and there was no queue at the ticket office.
Annarosa our tour guide was very helpful, knowledgeable and enthusiastic! Herculaneum was wonderfully preserved. Without a tour guide, it would not have been such a good experience. Annarosa told us the history of the ancient city in a very interesting way, Highly recommended.
Corrano was absolutely wonderful. We learned so much about the site and it was all presented with interesting facts, funny stories, and fascinating anecdotes. I’m so glad I booked this, it was one of my favorite parts of my trip!
Corrado was an excellent guide. He did a wonderful job explaining the life and times of the people. Corrado was knowledgeable and had a great sense of humor.
Herculaneum is a must-see archaeological site, and it really gives you a feel of what Roman life was like in 79 AD. Rafaelle was an incredible tour guide that has a true passion for history and archaeology, and he taught us so much in a short time. We really enjoyed him as our tour guide- He was the best! I would highly recommend this tour!
Very interesting tour and the guide was super : knowledgeable and friendly. He showed us some things that we would never have seen by ourselves & he explained everything : the history, the effects of the volcanic eruption, everyday Roman live, …
The history of this place is amazing. I still can’t get over how much they found when they dig through the rock and earth and how pristine the mosaics were and even seeing paint still on the wall! A great tour with an expert guide who’s very passionate about his field of archeology. Raffaele was great!
Teresa was an incredible tour guide. Kind, knowledgeable, and funny-she really made the tour. Though Herculaneum is much smaller than Pompeii, it is worth the visit as there is so much more preserved. Teresa walked us through the site and really gave us great perspective on what life was like in Herculaneum before the eruption. Highly recommend this tour!
They canceled our appointment the night before. No explanation or other info. Fortunately, there are other more serious organizers
Very beautiful site, well preserved, very clear map, it was a great discovery! Parking spaces quite hard to find. The train is a 15-minute walk away.
We first visited Pompeii before making Herculaneum. Firstly because it is too much to do in 1 day, and secondly because the site of Ercolano gives a lot of meaning to the visit of Pompei. The site is smaller but very rich too. And especially better preserved which allows to better project in the buildings and the Mood of the time. The shop on the site is richer in reference works than that of Pompeii. Surprising!
The recurring question of "Pompeii or Herculaneum" does not arise. It is obvious that Pompeii by its expanse, its frescoes and above all the publicity it is made is more "interesting" than Herculaneum. But the latter town, therefore smaller, is complementary because it has in particular two-storey houses (not in Pompeii), a lower part (sea level). The "non-passionate" might get bored. But for all, I strongly recommend the Virtual Museum which offers for 6€ a 3D film on Vesuvius and especially an interactive reconstruction of the site as found by the first researchers: films that reconstruct the life of the forum, a villa, the noise of water in the atrium, the scents of gardens. These 2 films immerse you in the life of these 2 cities and when you visit them you better understand what you see. Early June: there were 2 of us at the museum and the entrance to Herculaneum was immediate. Tickets are 13€!! Those sold on the internet are therefore very expensive. The Mood of the new city is completely different from the new Pompeii: truer, less touristy, cheaper.
