The house receives its name from marble statues of stags/deer found in the peristyle.
M. Nonius Balbus was the city's major benefactor restoring and building many public buildings. On his death he was made patron and feted with many honours, detailed in the long inscription on his funeral altar.
It is thought that the building was a centre of the cult of the Emperor Augustus and the headquarters of the Collegium Augustalium (or possibly even the local curia).
The house possibly belonged to one of the town's leading benefactors, Marcus Nonius Balbus and is somewhat unusual in that it has its own private access to the adjoining Suburban Thermae to the south.
It is very important house for the elegant wooden partition remained.
The House of the Skeleton probably the aggregation of three smaller buildings, derives its name from the discovery of human remains in a second floor room in 1831.
The Central Thermae were built around the beginning of the 1st century AD and were divided, as was then the common practice, into men's and women's baths, each with their own separate entrances.
The House of the Black Hall is one of Herculaneum's more luxurious mansions. The house has a monumental entrance which still retains the carbonised remains of the doorposts and lintel.
The house has an arrangement that was typical of the Samnites (an ancient people of the Sabine race who occupied this mountainous part of central Italy). The splendid atrium is skirted by a gallery with Ionic columns. The rooms are decorated with frescoes.
This is one of the most original houses in Herculaneum. It has a courtyard with a stairway and a stone balcony instead of an atrium.
Beautiful domus in the Centre of the archaeological area, with various environments, collonnati, frescos e-com everywhere at Herculaneum-charred remains of wooden parts.
Meet the guide at the main entrance of the archaeological site called "Porta Marina Superiore". The guide will be holding a sign with our company's name "Askos Tours" on the top.
Visit the most famous brothel in the ruined Roman city of Pompeii.
Walk through the main street of Pompeii.
Have a look of the ancient main square of Pompeii.
In the granary you will see marble tables and baths for fountains that adorned the entrances of houses and some casts of victims of the eruption as well as that of a dog and a tree.
Basilica was an open portico that gave shelter to merchants and other activities.
These occupy a vast area between the Brothel lane, the Holconius crossroads and the Via Stabiana. They represent the oldest thermal complex in the city.
The house of Faun was one of the largest and most impressive private residences in Pompeii.
The house of Menander is one of the richest and most magnificent houses in ancient Pompeii in terms of architecture, decoration and contents.
Visit the most important Theater in Pompeii
Have a look of the so called Teatro Piccolo of Pompeii.

We visited Herculeanum and Pompeii our guide was archaeologist Raphael – it was an exceptional experience. Rapheal was informative and insightful, delivering historical knowledge with charming dry humour that kept things engaging throughout. We learned far more and covered more ground, than we could have on our own thanks to this tour. The pace was perfect, allowing ample time for independent exploration, reflection, and photographs. We would recommend this tour – wonderful !
Giulia’s wealth of knowledge and enthusiastic attitude really made for an outstanding tour. She knows so much about both sites, as well as locations that are typically not on scheduled tours. Don’t miss the opportunity to have her as your guide!
Luciano Leone ( like the pope) was our guide who made the history come alive. We had a wonderful 2 hours in his company in our small group.
Gennar, our guide, was incredible with his depth of knowledge of both sites. He pointed out details that would've gone unnoticed or not understood by an average guide. He explained the why behind architecture and showed us how sophisticated these people were back then. It's all worth every penny to take this tour to get the most out of your experience.
Wow! Herculaneum and Pompeii exceeded my expectations! Even if you aren’t a history buff this experience will open your eyes to an ancient way of life. The preservation of the two townships are incredible. Our tour guide was Rosario and he is an archeologist with a wealth of knowledge. The tour was informative and Rosario was very pleasant and he answered any questions that we had. These sights are historic like no other and I can’t recommend it enough - and ask for Rosario 😀
Nicoletta was a fantastic guide. We were a group of 6. We found her informative, friendly and she spoke excellent English. She took the trouble to explain everything, making sure we didn't miss any small detail which we would have certainly overlooked by ourselves. A thoroughly enjoyable day.
Mena was an absolutely AMAZING tour guide and an archaeological expert. I highly recommend booking this tour. You will not regret it. I went on this tour with my family and we had the best time. Definitely a highlight of our trip.
Luigi was an excellent driver. He picked us up on time from our hotel in Sorrento and was driving us to Mount Vesuvius when he received a call informing him that Mt Vesuvius was closed due to rain. We then had to pivot and do the private tour of Pompeii. Luigi was very calm and very apologetic that we were not going to be able to visit Vesuvius but he offend us a lunch with wine tasting at a vineyard which we did after our tour at Pompeii. Luigi was very professional, informative and made sure we felt comfortable and that everything was O.k. The roads around Sorrento ere extremely narrow and there - are buses, cars and a ton of motor bikes. Luigi skillfully navigated these challenges. I highly recommend using the services of Askos Tours and specifically ask for Luigi!!!
We had a private tour of Pompeii and Herculaneum. Our driver Francesco Calenda and our tour guide Mena Gagliard could not have been nicer or more knowledgeable. I would ask for either of them by name. The whole day went seamlessly.
Sergio was an outstanding guide. His knowledge and enthusiasm was palpable. He brought his love for the past and brought it to life. Highly recommend.
We did a tour of Pompeii and Herculaneum with archeologist Sergio who was very informative without being too detailed. Good level for an introduction. The company provides bluetooth earphones connected to the guide's microphone that make listening so much easier. First through Pompeii ruins for about 2 hours, then a one hour break for lunch that we had down the road a nice garden restaurant, then by bus to Herculaneum for another 90 minutes with Sergio. We then could stay as long as we wanted and caught the train back to Pompeii. It was a 10 minute walk to the train station. It was much better than wandering around the sites by ourselves and it was great to see both sites as they are very different from each other.
Our guide, Teresa, is eminently qualified and explains archeologists’ findings on a level everyone can understand. She knew the sites very well and made the most of our time so we didn’t wait in line to enter a room.
We had Vincenzo has our Tour Guide for Pompeii and Herculaneum. He was simply fabulous! He was extremely knowledgeable on Pompeii and Herculaneum. We learned very much from him. It would be nice if EVERYONE could have Vincenzo as a Tour Guide!
Both Pompeii and Herculaneum must be seen. March was the perfect time incl. mild weather, and Sergio gave plenty of insights into the history and daily lives of the Romans. I can only recommend him, and just go with the train, everything is very well organized.
Sergio, our guide for Pompeii and Herculaneum was awesome!! Deep knowledge of the sights and history and explained things in great detail.
This tour was "Pompeii and Herculaneum Small Group tour with an Archaeologist Tour + Transport from Naples," and we went on Jan. 9, 2025, with Askos Tours. Raphael was our guide and he was terrific - very knowledgeable and entertaining and we all learned so much. We were picked up in Naples in the morning in a very nice van with 15 total people on the tour. We saw Pompeii and had lunch there (not included in price) and then toured Herculaneum, and we returned to Naple well before 5pm. It was a wonderful day.
Mena was our amazing tour guide! She walked us through both Pompei and Herculaneum. Her insights and explanations brought these sites to life!
Had an amazing experience on day trip from Naples to Pompeii and Herculaneum. Our archeologist guide, Paolo, was fantastic in every way. He is very knowledgeable, patient and has a great sense of humor. He knew just how to take us around at exactly the right moment to minimize crowding and showed us so many interesting details along our journey. With an experienced guide, you can really see a lot in just a few hours.
Really interesting tours in both Pompeii and Herculaneum. The tour guides were extremely knowledgable and made the experience fun. Luciano was fantastic, his illustrations helped the ruins come to life to get an even better insight into what we were seeing and how the people lived up until the volcanic eruption. He was also incredibly helpful in sourcing us a taxi back to Naples and went above and beyond. Thank you for making our holiday even better!
I loved the enthusiasm of our guide, Diego. He pointed out all of the highlights. It was easy to get a sense of what life was like in the Roman period as well as the damage done by the volcano because of the details he showed to us.
My wife and I took this tour in September, 2024. The tour guide was very good and informative. During the tour my wife fell on the cobble stones and hurt herself. The tour guide was very helpful in getting her help from the onsite medical aid station. In addition, the tour guide, although continuing with the tour, sent someone from his office to the aid station to act as interpreter for us. We were very impressed!
Paulo was an amazing guide, so knowledgeable and personable, highly recommend the trip and Paulo as a guide. It is a long day with lots of walking and on a hot day take lots of water and a hat/sunshade. Fascinating tour, we wouldn’t have learn nearly as much without Paulo.
Mena was amazing as a guide! It was the right choice for us to choose a private tour instead of a group tour. We felt we had it all to ourselves in the first hour or so and got to ask all the questions we had. Highly recommend
Our guide’s background with a PhD in Classical studies meant all our questions were answered thoroughly and many links to other aspects of the region were identified. Her grasp of both sites meant we avoided crowds and saw newly available exhibits. She personally assisted us with unanticipated transit issues between sites, going above and beyond to ensure we were able to have this once-in-a-lifetime experience
The views of Pompeii and Herculaneum were amazing! It was so surreal. Our tour guide Sergio was so knowledgeable and knew answers to all our questions. He was a great guide and increased the experience for us.
Paolo was great! It’s a long tour but he kept us engaged and answered a lot of questions. I learned a ton and had a great time!
The tour was comprehensive and stimulating. I feel as though Herculaneum isn’t well known enough for what we saw. The frescos were exceptional and the tour was amazing. Was caught off guard by the skeletons; apparently they were just made available to the public for the first time. Sergio was the best tour guide I’ve had in Italy. He was truly enthusiastic about the subject, and it showed. 10/10 experience. Would most certainly do another tour with him.
Julia, our guide, was top rate - knowledgeable, fun, personable. She was a gracious host to this marvelous site. She truly enriched our understanding, and appreciation of Pompeii. The little hearing devises worked quite well too. FYI - there are water fountains throughout to refill your water bottles, wear sunscreen cause very little shade.
Askos Tours was AMAZING, and IVAN, our archeologist, is the real deal! We could not have asked for a better tour of both incredible sites. There were seven of us on the tour, and we give it 14 thumbs up! Askos was great about communicating with us all along the way and even accommodated us in switching the two sites around according to the direction we were driving. Ivan took us off the beaten path of the crowds and gave us insight into the engineering and culture of these cities. He's engaging and a wealth of knowledge!
Phenomenal! Anna's expertise brought the sites of Pompeii and Herculaneum to life. No stone was left unturned, no question unanswered. A true credit to her profession and an absolute delight, she went above and beyond to ensure this was a highlight of our trip. Highly recommend. Thank you so much Anna!
We booked a private tour with Anna which was incredible! The sites of both Pompeii and Herculaneum were brought to life by her incredible knowledge & explanations. Anna was so friendly and even took us to Herculaneum with her own personal vehicle. Anna's service was excellent and thank you again for an unforgettable experience!!
This was a memorable day, much anticipated and lived up to all expectations. A huge success factor was our guide, Diego, from Askos tours. His knowledge of and passion for the sites was combined with spot on accuracy (my husband is a classicist and vouches for that) and a real desire to share his insights. Our interest never flagged because of Diego's input and we all left feeling moved, uplifted and very grateful that we had had such a splendid opportunity. I would highly recommend Askos tours and particularly Diego.
Sylvia was a fabulous guide and our family group of seven had a truly memorable experience touring both sites. We all got so more out of our visit with Sylvia as our guide. She was very knowledgeable, personable and engaging with all ages of our group. Her expertise as an archeologist working both sites led a depth to the tour that we are grateful to have experienced. Aksos Tours and Sylvia were also very helpful and gracious in assisting us when we messed up our train directions. 😜 Highly recommend.
We enjoyed a tour today of both ancient cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum with our guide Sergio Pisco. The history combined with the sense of being in and out of another time was amazing. Sergio has deep knowledge and an obvious love of these special places. He shared so much with us and answered questions as they came. He really made the day. It takes a lot of talent to keep a group moving happily through monuments so large and complex. The cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum are moving - so many perished and at the same time marvellous. Well worth the time and attention.
Very organized and responsive team. From the time I booked they were always quick to answer my queries. Giovanni our driver was very accommodating and professional. The guide was very knowledgeable and knew many facts about the archeological site. A bit expensive but worth it.
Both our driver Giovanni and our guide Vincenzo were wonderful. So much to see and understand and we all felt that the day was perfect.
We went to the Pompei and Herculano tour and our driver Francesco was really nice and always taking care of us. We had a fantastic day!!!
The tour was a good balance between 1) geeking out on what we know about the sites and how we know it and 2) the awe of stepping into a 2000 year old site and imagining what it must have been like to live there before the eruption and on those few days that destroyed their cities.
Informative and interesting tour by Paolo Very knowledgeable and set the information all in context Hot day but we got around the highlights of both sites
Our tour guide (Marilee? Marili? Marie-lee? sorry) was SO knowledgeable, informative, and friendly. We learned a ton about the disaster, the homes/ businesses, the materials used, the styles of decoration, the victims, historical context, etc. I also really recommend the private tour if you can— there were many people and groups around, and it helped so much to have her to ourselves. Loved seeing both the sites and got much more out of it than I might have with just a map or audio tour.

Wonderful guide and driver. Loved being able to learn in depth in a small group abour Pomeli and Herculaneum.
Fantastic day walking through Pompeii and Herculaneum. Our tour guide Sergio was incredibly knowledgeable and informative. We learned so much that we Wouldnt have if we were by ourselves. See photo of Sergio in action
Our driver, Giovanni, was wonderful and our tour guide, Rosella was incredibly knowledgeable. Giovanni picked us up from our hotel in Sorrento, offered us water, and asked what music we preferred. He was so polite and kind. After Pompeii he dropped us for lunch at a gourmet restaurant and waited while we enjoyed a break. Rosella made Pompeii and Herculaneum come to life with interesting stories. Pompeii was overrun with tourists, and we greatly preferred Herculaneum in terms of the level of preservation. Such an incredible experience.
Absolutely incredible day visiting Pompeii and Herculaneum with Askos. From the moment the day began with our driver Giovanni arriving half an hour early to pick us up wearing a jacket and tie, in a new minivan, our day was amazing. Giovanni smoothly navigated through some impossible roads, playing music of our choice. He gave us bottled water and coordinated our arrival at Pompeii with Nicoletta our guide for the day. On arrival at Pompeii we met Nicoletta and hit it off immediately. Bubbling with enthusiasm and knowledge from the outset, she took us round the best sites many off the beaten track away from the crowds. Nicolettas experience as an archaeologist was evident from the outset as she spoke knowledgeably about the different opinions of archaelogists on the finds. I learnt so much about Pompeii and Herculaneum. Then as soon as we were done Giovanni was there to whisk us back home, stopping on the way to buy us a Lemon Granita to finish the day. An absolutely unforgettable experience thank you so much Askos I hope to use you again next year for another tour!
Great tour with Alfredo . explanations , answers , pace; it was all just right . Recommended. You will learn and remember !
Really enjoyed the tour thanks to the excellent driver Francesco and excellent and insightful guide Diego
Giovanni picked us up in Sorrento and skillfully navigated the traffic all day. He even found time to give us water, stop along the way for pictures of the coast, and gifted us two postcards of the sites. Nicoletta was our tour guide and braved the rain and hail in Pompeii with us and the sun in Herculaneum. Her in-depth knowledge of the sites she walked us through was captivating and she was able to tailor the tour to what we wanted to see, which was amazing! So greatful we had these two as our guide and driver for the day, it was such a memorable experience couldn’t have asked for a better one.
Maria was a fabulous tour guide. Very knowledgeable and friendly. I would greatly recommend this tour.
