At the time of the dramatic eruption, Pompeii counted about 11.000 inhabitants, while Herculaneum had a population of some 5.000 people. A number of emperors and aristocrats had their holiday villas in these cities. One day, in 79 AD, several meters of ashes buried the whole area in a matter of few hours. Centuries later, in 1748, under the Bourbons government, excavation works started. The discovery was greeted with enthusiasm as it added great wealth to the kingdom and inspired the neoclassicism movement in Europe. Nowadays, the ruins of Pompeii are amongst the most visited archaeological sites in the world, while Herculaneum is renewed for its Villa dei Papiri containing a library of over 1800 papyruses. Visit of the excavations (approx 2 hrs) and if time permits also of a coral and cameos factory to admire the production procedure carried on by expert artisans

Great way to see both sites! You don't have time to see everything but you get the highlights, and having guides allows you to make the most of your time. Claudia, Maria and Aldo were all wonderful. Lunch was nothing fancy but it was efficient and filling. Don't hesitate to book if you're looking for a great overview of these two fascinating sites.
Aldo was wonderful and informative but was hard to hear the tour guide while at Pompei and Herculaneum. Disliked having to hear 2 languages on one tour.
Christian, our driver Pasquale, Pompeii tour guide Francesco and Herculaneum tour guide Maria (especially) were all really great.
A long day in the heat. Cristiano, the drivers and the guides, went out of their way to be helpful and solve problems. Site guides were excellent but as it was a busy day, changes were made.
We spent a lovely day doing the Pompeii and Herculaneum tours. Christian was a helpful guide between tours and pick up/drop off. Danielo was our guide for the Herculaneum portion and he was particularly patient with our young children who were present. He gave them time to get energy out and have fun. This made the experience very enjoyable.
Christian was great and explained everything and made sure we got place to place. Danilo guided our tour at Herculaneum. He was very knowledgeable and also helped our child stay engaged. The trip was an overall great experience and I would recommend it.

It was a beautiful day. Very smooth from my pickup to my drop off. Paky is an excellent driver. I really enjoyed the tour to Pompeii and Herculaneum as I love ancient history. A must see for history buffs. Our tour escort, Rebecca was a pure delight. Fluent in four languages she quickly switches from one language to another in order to accommodate everyone on the tour. She was prepared and quick to solve or/and answer any questions. A lovely young woman who sparkles with happiness. She will have you smiling all day.
Our guide, Maria, was very knowledgeable and answered all our questions in English and Spanish. And Christiano was helpful in organizing all of us for lunch and transportation.

Excellent experience despite extremely hot weather! Our driver Mario and Guide Aldo from NapoliCityVision were knowledgeable, friendly, professional and engaging. Also showed his lovely personality, engaging with everyone, speaking clearly and articulate in English (despite being a native Neopolitan) and he showed sensitivity to the group - noting how intensely hot it was. Both tours were great - very informative and interesting - and it felt like history was brought to life in an enjoyable and easily understood way.

Pompeii was interesting, but to crowded with too many visitors. Herculaneum was an excellent experience and much less crowded.
Aldo's support and guidance have been excellent, but the schedule change meant we couldn't join the group in Pompeii with a Spanish-speaking guide and the visit we did with an audio guide, which obviously isn't the same quality.

The excursion to Pompeii was phenomenal, with Maria as an excellent guide. We ate something simple there, but it was well organized and the waiters were very friendly. Then we went to Herculaneum; it is worth seeing because it is better preserved, but that is where I was disappointed that instead of a guide, they gave us audio guides, and that detracts from the excursion. I thought we had a guide, but it seems there were few of us, and with audio guides that do not filter, it becomes a bit chaotic to tour it. We were also tired, so a physical guide would have been better, but it was our mistake anyway that we thought we had a guide. Everything else was very good, very good service from the organization.
The excursion to Pompeii was excellent with Maria; she explained the most important things to us, and we give her a 10. The food was well organized, simple but everything was okay. The excursion to Herculaneum should have been guided; the audio guides are fine, but it is better with a guide who can filter and synthesize information for us, since it is very worthwhile but lacks that extra touch. I thought when I booked that it was also guided, but that it depended on capacity. Maybe it was my mistake.
Excellent excursion. Aldo was the lead guide (later in Pompeii we had a guide for the excursion itself and in Herculaneum an audio guide), very attentive, very pleasant, and he explained everything perfectly. We had a good lunch (as an appetizer a small lettuce and corn salad, for the main course an option between pasta with tomato sauce, pizza, and chicken with fries, and for dessert a small scoop of vanilla ice cream). The transportation was very comfortable. The timing was perfect. The point to improve is the assistance or guide in Herculaneum. There is no good signage, it has quite a lot to see because it is actually better preserved than Pompeii, but you get lost, it is not easy to follow a thread to keep to a good route.
