Wow. What a day. Wandering the streets of Naples with Francesca is like walking with a friend. While the focus is on food there is also the Naples back story that Francesca shares with you. The pace is gentle and you don't cover a lot of distance, but the experience is brilliant. Napoli food favourites from vendors and providores that have been feeding the locals for years. My advice is to skip breakfast and come hungry because the food is plentiful and delicious. Dinner that evening was not required.

Itinerary
Naples is a city of striking contrasts, where opulence and working-class street life combine into an urban identity that is unique in Italy, if not the world. Here palaces and rooftop shanties share the same skyline, street performers and opera singers appear on the same squares, and exclusive fine-dining bastions on the hilltop overlook working-class quarters teeming with pizza ovens and buzzing with motor scooters. The physical differences between the breezy lookouts of Vomero Hill and the tight alleys of the historic Spanish Quarter are so dramatic it’s hard to believe they are both a part of the same city, separated only by a short funicular ride. However, as we will see on this day of eating and exploring, despite their differences, the people of this city are united around good old-fashioned Neapolitan cooking. From posh cafes to street food stands, Naples locals like a meal hot, quick, loud and delicious, just like their grandmothers and grandfathers before them.
We’ll begin our day the Neapolitan way, with a cup of thick, piping hot espresso and the city’s signature pastry, sfogliatelle, in a Neapolitan cafe up in Vomero Down in Montesanto, the working-class belly of Naples, we’ll get a feel for the beautiful chaos that characterizes local life. At a neighborhood fishmonger we will have a taste of marinated anchovies and freshly-fried fish and seafood, while at a friggitoria with more than a century’s experience we’ll get a bite of fried macaroni, a favorite local specialty. We’ll go behind the scenes at a producer of taralli, the simple yet bewitching crispy snack seasoned with black pepper, and then sit down to soak up some neighborhood life with a glass of crisp white wine from a vineyard near Mount Vesuvius, readying our appetite for a course or two at a classic backstreet trattoria.
We’ll continue into the narrow streets of the Spanish Quarter, shaded by laundry flapping in the breeze, to visit one of the neighborhood’s classic pizzerias on our way square dedicated to the legendary soccer player Diego Maradona, revered here like a saint after he helped bring a championship to the city. As we wind our day down with a limoncello spritz, we’ll decide if we should go for an artisanal gelato made from buffalo’s milk, or a final bracing coffee – or, better yet, both. After all, this day is all about doing and seeing things both ways.

Excellent and educational food tour. We sampled a wide variety of Neapolitan cuisines and roamed through two very different neighborhoods. Walking down the steps from one to the other really brought this home. Chiara was learned and passionate about the tour and her clientele. The only reason I wouldn't give highest marks is that I felt she spent too much time accommodating the couple who was an hour late.
This tour was a delight. Chiara was an excellent guide, informing us not only about the food but the history or the parts of Naples we visited. It also showed us neighbourhoods of Naples we may not have otherwise visited. The food itself was incredible. We had a great time.
My husband and I really enjoyed the experience with Chiara. She provided a well paced, friendly and informative tour filled with lots of typical Neapolitan food to taste.
Loved it! This was my 4th tour and you guys rock. So fun!
Exceptional food tour, with knowledgeable guide. We explored various area of Naples and tried many different foods.
We thoroughly enjoyed this tour from start to finish. It provides a fantastic overview of the city, perfectly showcasing its unique and contrasting neighborhoods. The food stops were an absolute highlight—every single dish was delicious and authentic. A massive thank you to our guide, Ilaria, who was incredibly knowledgeable, engaging, and just delightful to spend the day with. We highly recommend this experience to anyone looking to truly discover the city!
This was hands down the best food tour we have ever taken. Chiara was a wonderful engaging guide with a passion for sharing her love of Naples. Seeing the contrast between the upper and lower neighborhoods of Naples was an experience we will never forget. All of the food stops were well planned out and the food and drink choices delicious. At no time did we feel rushed or stressed. We have taken many food tours throughout the world and this is the second tour we have taken with Culinary Backsteets. You get what you pay for and this tour was definitely worth the cost. Bravo Chiara, until next time. Ciao. Bob and Melissa
My 2nd visit to Napoli and the 2nd tour I did there. Every friendly, knowledgable Chiara was my guide again. She showed me and 2 other people two very different neighbourhoods of a city I love. Culinary Backstreets never fails to bring you to all the special places that you would not find yourself. Their tours always give me the feeling that I learned unique things about the city. And I love to meet local people, the love they put in everything they sell, prepare for years. Lots of them are family businesses that can be so proud of what they do. I look out to explore more cities with CB
This was a wonderful way to experience two very different sides of Naples, from the “high” parts of the city to the lively, authentic backstreets below. Our guide was the best, she was excellent — knowledgeable, engaging, and able to bring together the food, neighborhoods, history, and architecture in a way that made the city feel much richer and more understandable. The food was delicious, the pace was perfect, and the tour gave us a much deeper appreciation for Naples than we would have had on our own.
This is the second food tour I have done with Culinary Backstreets. I did the Two Markets, Two Continents in Istanbul, and this time I did the Highs and Lows Tour in Naples with my wife. Our tour guide was Marina, and she was fantastic. It was very easy to meet up with her. We connected via WhatsApp and the meetup went smoothly. She was friendly, outgoing, and easy to get along with. She took us to eight different spots and helped us choose what to eat, offering her own recommendations along the way. Sometimes, street food can be intimidating and I don’t think I would have found any of these specific spots on my own, nor would I have know to try some of this traditional Neapolitan cuisine without her guidance. Beyond the food, Marina is also an expert on Naples and can speak at length about its history, why the food is the way it is, how things came to be in Naples, and how Neapolitan culture spread across the world. I would say this tour was the highlight of my time in Naples and worth every single dollar spent on it. I would highly recommend a tour with Culinary Backstreets in any city where they operate.
Myself and my partner recently did this tour with the fantastic Chiara and it was an absolute highlight of our stay in the city. Chiara was brilliant; engaging, friendly, very informative and happy to answer all of our questions about the city, food related or not, plus she possessed a treasure trove of local places to go to away from expensive tourist traps. Every place we were taken to was special (particularly the busy local trattoria for lunch), and by the end we had to ask for smaller portions as our stomachs were full! It was great also to see the many faces of Napoli - we were based in and around the busy and bustling Centro Storico, so it was a real revelation to us when we began in the airy and (relatively) peaceful Vomero district to sample the 'high' life before dropping down (literally, down the funicular train) back to the old town. We love a food tour and this is easily the best and most comprehensive we've ever done. If we are ever in a city hosting another Culinary Backstreets tour we will be booking with them, and if you are in Napoli and lucky enough to have Chiara as your guide, please tell her Jimmi and Lucy say 'Ciao'.
Marianna was our guide for this tour. She did a fantastic job. She welcomed all questions, and being a native of the area, was able to provide a lot of various interesting details and pointed out numerous areas of interest. Our group was a full group of seven. There were three people in my party. The group size was very manageable and four different countries were represented. This allowed for insight into other perspectives. We were not rushed at all and and the places chosen for food tasting were perfect. Such a wide variety of foods and all were . Enough food was made available so if someone wanted seconds of something, they could have it. My brother said that this was the best food tour he had ever been on and he could not have imagined such a great time. Everything was so good, we went back the following day to hit some of the high points again! I look forward to taking another city walks food tour in the future!
We booked a private tour with Mariana for our family of 4. It was the perfect way to see quite a bit of the city while enjoying foods that we might not have tried on our own. Mariana was a great guide, and I would love to tour with her again!
Great food walking tour of Napoli. As the tour name suggests, you start on top of a hill and work your way down to the Spanish quarter. All along the way we made approximately seven or eight food stops. Each stop the food was excellent. our tour guide guide,Chiara was amazing. Very knowledgeable of the area, gave us history of the different neighborhoods. We were in and enjoyed spending five hours with her actually she was so nice. It was closer to six hours. would definitely recommend taking this tour if you’re in Napoli.
A wonderful introduction to Naples history, culture and FOOD!! Francesca was the perfect hostess. A great first event. As we knew what to listen and look for the remainder of our long and amazing visit! Best of all, we discovered the traditional Easter foods and sampled the numerous time over the next few days. And a good immersion in the culture and the history that drives it. Highly recommend.
Our guide Marianna was truly a treasure, taking us to local spots away from the Instagram crowds and sharing the history of the various neighborhoods. The best way to experience Naples areas outside of the Centro Storico. Would come back just for this!

We had a wonderful time, despite over sleeping the morning of the tour, our host arranged to meet up with us for the later stops on the tour. Very accommodating! I love the Culinary Backstreets Tours (we also took one in Istanbul last year) they are a great value for money. Lots of good information about the area as well as awesome food.
Francesca was absolutely phenomenal!!! She drove us to the most delicious places in different districts of Napoli. We took the metro and the cable railway. It was not just about food, there was also culture, a lot of history and by the end of the day we had a clear vision of Napoli. We enjoyed the whole tour even though we were so full before the end 😅 you know what they say “there’s always room for ice cream” and the gelato at the final stop was delightful! Don’t miss the opportunity to go on a Culinary Backstreets tour.
Mariana was an excellent guide. We tasted so much food and will be especially spoiled by the mozzarella. Pace was perfect and we were grateful to try many local things.
Francesca was extremely well organised & well informed - also very good company from 09:30 to 15:00! The fact that she is also an accredited tour guide was additionally helpful. We were introduced to many Neapolitan gastronomic treats - and in fact would advise a very small breakfast! The tour was excellent value, very professionally managed from ore-booking discussions to when we said goodbye. Highly recommended.
When the day starts with coffee and pastry it is already festive! and when it start in Naples, it's doubling the happiness :) though it was rainy day our guide Francesca made it unforgettable with the selection of food, history and stories behind it. If you want to discover the variety of the districts of Napoli, this tour is for you, highly recommend! you're no tired and enjoying every bite of the city!
-Interesting and excellent conversations -personable and informative -cognizant of human needs- toilet -excellent eating tour - lots of new discoveries
This ended up meeting a private tour with Marianna and we can tell you not she and the tour were absolute perfection!! E got so much history, more amazing food than we could imagine and it was the best day of our trip! We we be using this company in Istanbul as well. We highly recommend both the tour and Mariana!
We had a perfect food tour experience with Francesca. She took us for some great bites that we wouldn't have thought to try on our own and helped us with plenty of recommendations for the rest of our trip. Culinary backstreets know what they're doing.
My husband, 21 year old son, and I did the High and Low tour with Chiara while in Naples. What a great way to see parts of the city and learn a bit of their history! Chiara gave us quite a bit of background on the areas we were in and also the food we were eating. We loved the food and also the context provided by our guide. Nothing felt rushed, we had plenty of delicious food, and it was like walking around the city with a new friend! Highly recommend!
Best introduction to Naples. Insight with culture, history and FOOD! A Naples resident, Sophia Sophia shared 5.5 h in this beautiful city.
Francesca was amazing. The food, the history, and the tour was so wonderful. We had a wonderful day of exploring and learning. Thank you!
We LOVED our tour of Naples with Chiara! She was so engaging: sharing her own experiences with Naples and giving us so much history and culture. Every bite we had was delicious, and things we hadn't and wouldn't have found ourselves. We had terrific guests with us on the tour as well, which is almost always a given with people who choose Culinary Backstreets tours! Wish we had had time to do the other Naples tour with them - a reason to come back soon :)
Stefania was a great guide. We enjoyed the places she showed us and getting to know the city by spending time chatting with a local.
My husband and I took the Naples High Low Tour with Stephanie. It was excellent. She was charming, fun and very knowledgeable. We ate delicious food and visited areas of the city we might have missed.
What a great experience! We learned all about Naples and its culinary traditions and ate our way from the top of the hill to the streets below. We were able to experience foods and food shops that we would not have discovered ourselves without considerable effort. Our guide, Francesca, was very knowledgeable. The group was small so there was ample opportunity to discuss food and ask questions. No one walked away hungry. We would highly recommend the tour to others. A great value.
Our tour guide, Chiara, was knowledgeable and friendly! I learned and ate so much! I hope I can go on another tour some day
Chiara was an excellent guide and this was a truly memorable experience. There were just three of us and Chiara on the tour - a world away from the usual size of these types of tour. I'd definitely do another Culinary Backstreets tour.
A fantastic experience! The guide was fun and knowledgeable. We learned a lot about the people and culture of Naples, as well as a lot about food. Everything we ate was delicious. We ate a lot, but the guide was careful not to overwhelm us with sheer quantity. Having the dual “high” and “low” experience was terrific.
Chiara was an excellent guide and even answered some questions I had days after the tour was over. The day was well paced, not too fast nor too slow, and the food tastings were spread out so that I didn't get too full.
This is a fairly new tour for Culinary Backstreets in Naples and we highly recommend it. You start off in the Vomero neighborhood (easy to get there on the metro), a really charming, residential neighborhood with plenty of retail shops and merchants in a hilly part of Naples. Some of the streets were closed for pedestrian-only access, so it was lovely to walk through while we were sampling food. We did not eat breakfast, so come hungry, as you will be tasting lots of food over the next 4-5 hrs. We had leftovers wrapped up to take home from some of our stops. On top of the tastings, we took the funicular down to Montesanto, to continue our tour. Our transit tickets were included, and it was super fun to get the aerial view of the city as we descended. From coffee and traditional pastries, amazing cheeses, traditional sandwiches, Naples fried/stuffed pizza, Neapolitan pastas, fried seafood, artisanal coffee, gelato, everything was tasty and we were stuffed. Local artisanal purveyors and family-run businesses. Friendly folks who are proud of their food. We never would have discovered these places had we not done this tour. Francesca was a warm, wonderful guide. We felt like we had a friend showing us their town, pointing out highlights of some of the neighborhoods and a beautiful metro station while we walked. We went back to one of the shops that evening. The owner was so helpful suggesting a bottle of wine and letting us have a taste so we could pick out some salami. Then we enjoyed them with our leftovers for dinner. The next night we went to a restaurant in Vomero from their pocket guide called Buatta. It was an intimate spot on a quiet little street and the perfect way to end our time in Naples. And we just received a postcard from Culinary Backstreets today, (a photo of us from the tour)! What a thoughtful touch to remind us of our visit. Thank you to Francesca and the team for welcoming us to Naples.
Francesca is amazing! We were the only 2 joining and got a private tour therefore. She took all the time to guide us through the city, show the best places and food. I can highly recommend food tours from Culinary backstreet. Much higher quality than cheaper tours! This tour is great if you want to get the insides from 2 neighborhoods. If you want the traditional food, you might like the other tour. We liked the uniqueness from this tour, because we got an insight to local places.
Francesca, our guide, was fantastic. We enjoyed seeing the two sides of Napoli very much. All of the choices were fantastic and very tasty and very authentic. The fried fish, pasta genoves, pizza fritta, and of course the sfogliatelle were highlights.... but everything was great.
I can not say enough about this excellent tour. Sonia was so knowledgeable and showed us secret places that we never would have found even with months of Googling. We had only a short visit in Naples and wanted to get a feeling for this ancient, vibrant city. Sonia was exactly the person to guide us. Seeing the difference between elegant Vomero, up on the hill above the fray, then the busy and dense Quartieri Spagnoli, was the perfect combo. I’m sure there are other tours possibly less expensive but having a smart, worldly native Neapolitan was truly precious. She knows her stuff and, once again hats off to Culinary Backstreets for knowing how to curate the best possible tours. And find the best tour leaders!!
We had a great time and ate lots of wonderful food while learning a lot about the city! Chiara, our guide, was perfect - attentive to what interested us and answering our many questions about both the food and the neighborhoods. We highly recommend this tour!
This was our second tour with Culinary Backstreets, and it did not disappoint. Our tour guide, Deborah, led us on a flavorful and colorful exploration of two very different feels of Naples. As a Neapolitan herself, she combined her food knowledge with her personal knowledge of and love for the city. Of course the food was wonderful - it's Naples, how can it not be? And it was plentiful. We even had to pass on one stop because we were getting too full. Fair warning - this one has a lot of walking, though you literally start high (on a hilltop) and end low (by the water front). Good for working off the calories and rebuilding your appetite for dinner.
This was a truly fantastic tour. Great food and a really fun was to explor the city. Sonia was a fantastic tour guide and very knowledgable
We had a wonderful tour with Sonia. We had a great group of people and Sonia made everyone feel at ease. She has a history background, which was a wonderful addition to the local food knowledge she shared. Loved every food stop and especially wandering around the Spanish Quarter. Thanks again for another great backstreets moment! We thoroughly recommend them for a unique perspective in your travels.
I did both the Culinary Backstreets food tours in Naples (a city that has an amazing diversity of fab food). This was my favorite of the two. Got to see the “high” (aka richer/newer) part of Naples—Vomero AND the older section (including the Spanish Quarter). Francesca, a true “napolitana” was a terrific guide who provided all sorts of insights and advice. You won’t be disappointed!
Our tour with Chiara was an immersion in Naples, with food as a starting point. We visited a small, family-run restaurant where we were the only foreigners, a cheese shop with a selection from regional cheesemakers (imagine, for example, five types of ricotta), a shop that has been specializing in the must-try classic fried food of Naples, and much more. Chiara also shared with us her native, discerning perspective on history and contemporary life in Naples - architecture, street art, cultural and social initiatives in various neighborhood, etc. This is a unique tour of life as it exists in Naples, with special foods, and the pleasure of Chiara's company. We took Chiara's other food tour of Naple's last year, and enjoyed it so much that we decided to take this tour as well. We highly recommend both.
Very friendly, excellent guide, very good food! Skip breakfast, you'll get more than you can eat. Nice contrast between uptown (Vomero) and downtown (Spanish Quarter).
We had only one full day to spend in Naples and this was the way to really enjoy it! Our guide Francesca was superlative and took us to over a dozen places--none of us believed we were really able to eat (the best) gelato and all the previous stops...but we did! An astounding assortment of foods and a great way to see a good amount of the city.
The tour was amazing, with such a wide variety (and huge quantity) of food to try! I felt we had a great spread of authentic Naples cuisine. Throughout the day, our Tour Guide (Sonia) was incredibly knowledgeable, not only regarding the food we were trying, but also on the city in general. Every neighborhood, dish, and view had an explanation and history, and no questions from us went unanswered. Due to our time in the city, we only had a chance to do this one food tour, however, based on our experience, I can't imagine any other tour could be as great as this one!
