Gaige House has attractive, well kept grounds, and the staff were friendly at check-in. Unfortunately, several details made our stay less comfortable than expected. The bed was very low, with a frame that extended beyond the mattress on every side. That exposed ledge made it easy to hit your shins getting into bed. The bathroom was the biggest issue. The tub’s sides came up to about thigh height, making climbing in to shower awkward and potentially unsafe. The glass panel covered only part of the tub, so water splashed onto the bathroom floor. A walk-in shower would have been much more practical. The walls also seemed thin. We could hear footsteps and bumps outside our room, so it wasn’t as quiet as we hoped. The floors felt somewhat sticky and could have used a thorough mopping. Breakfast was underwhelming, with an egg bite as the main protein option and mostly bread and yogurt otherwise. We were also disappointed to receive chocolate chip cookies instead of the advertised Japanese tea cookies. Complimentary alcohol might appeal to other guests, but we couldn’t drink, so it added little value for us. Overall, the grounds and friendly welcome were highlights, but the room design and breakfast left us disappointed.

Gaige House is a truly special place. The Japanese design of the rooms is wonderfully done. Our room's patio opened to the creek and it was so restful relaxing outside in the evening. We enjoyed lounging around the pool, which is kept at a perfect 84 degrees. Make sure to try the quiche for breakfast--so yummy that I had a second piece. And don't forget to indulge in a homemade chocolate chip cookie! I look forward to visiting again someday.
Came up for an overnight stay recently. Saw this come up on the Hyatt portfolio and thought we’d try a new place. The place gives you more of a bed and breakfast feel - and it def needs a refresh… peeling paint and loose boards at a few places on the property. There is a happy hour - decent offerings of wine and snacks. The house made cookies with the port wine and sake is a nice touch. The place closes down at some time in the night and there is no one on duty - so there’s a process for emergencies, late check ins and to come into the main house at night. We spent time by the pool side - decent sized and good number of loungers and chairs… the meditation room is close by the pool. Breakfast next day was fairly decent - fresh quiche, boiled eggs, pasties and Bagels and breads, along with overnight oats and yogurt. Can be a hit or miss according to a couple we spoke to- but there is a good pastry shop a quarter mile down the road. The town itself is also right outside - pretty charming and well worth the time to Walk around. The room itself is decent sized but no closets for your things so if you are planning to stay longer not sure where your stuff would go. There was a small table with a tiny fountain right outside our room. Japanese elements at peppered throughout the place - not really dominant as advertised.. One thing that honestly put us off right away- We had initially booked a room and we called a couple of days before to ask about a PAID upgrade to a suite and were told that they were completely sold out. Well, at the pool side, another couple was being offered a tour of the two suites to switch from their current one due to some issues - missed that part! We were only staying the night so didnt push the issue.
This is one of the very best ryokan style b&bs in the US. The architecture resembles a quiet, elegant ryokan in Kyoto... The suite is wonderfully designed - even with a zen garden and place to relax with trees and flowers. Every thoughtful touches were considered... from the room furnishings to the small touches - such as bottled water left in the fridge. Luxurious bath robes and simple kimono with Japanese styled slippers (wooden but quite comfortable). Evening reception and morning breakfast complete the wonderful experience. Just the best... Be aware though - while Glen Ellen has a few decent restaurants (we went to one of them... Search for a review elsewhere), Sonoma has more choices and it is about 7-8 miles from the facility. No matter, short drive
The accommodations here were fantastic to enjoy! Even in a winter storm! We enjoyed going out to the hot tub in the rain and enjoying the sounds of the trees and rain coming down. The pool is heated and while we don’t dip in it was definitely an option! The nightly happy hour hosted by local wineries was a great way to try wines in the area without even having to leave the house - the cheese board assortments were also delicious and well stocked. We followed each happy hour with a fresh baked cookie from the case on our way back up to the room! Our room met every expectation we had - we stayed in the Gaige Suite with the double soaking tub and were able to relax each night and unwind from the adventures of the day. The location in Glen Ellen was perfect for us - we enjoyed the amenities so much it was worth the 30-40 minute drive to our other activities. The local food was also superb making dinner each night easy to figure out! If we could’ve extended our stay we would have!
