My partner and I had one of the most incredible experiences here. Exploring the cave was an unforgettable adventure. You crawl, slide, and do a bit of climbing to make your way through, but everything was easily manageable thanks to the clear guidance from our guide, Alejandro. His explanations were fascinating and really enhanced the experience. We wouldn't hesitate to do it again

Amazing experience, amazing guide and amazing nature. Alejandro took care of us from beginning to end and provided us with a lot of informations and insights about the cave and the Myvatn area in general. The tour lasted around 4h30 and we particularly enjoyed the enthusiasm from the guide and from the other guests as well as being in a small group such as this one. (Only 6 people) We felt safe and instructed. The pick up and drop off was easy and everything/everyone was on time. I strongly recommend this tour, agency and guide if you want to mix adventure and knowledge.
Fantastic tour given by an outstanding guide! Once in a lifetime experience inside a lava cave with a very small group. Octavio provided an enthusiastic and educational experience on the geological history of the area and a genuine appreciation of the Icelandic culture.
Amazing experience, guided by Runar. The hole tour lasted arround 5 hours. We went to an unique ice cave where we had to crawl through narrow tunnels and got to see the ancient permafrost that covers the whole cave. It is something you will only do here, and this is the only company that will take you there. 100% recommended! Also special thanks to Runar, who kept the tour interesting, and thrilling with a lot of cool facts and information. Keep up the awesome work!
For me, exploring the ice cave was my most beautiful and fulfilling experience of our vacation. Alejandro is the perfect guide. Taking care of our comfort and safety while informing us on geology, wildlife and Iceland. I certainly appreciate his clarifying comparisons, his patience to answer all our questions and his enthusiasm to share his insights.
This was a very interesting tour....however, it will be difficult for someone to doif they are claustrophobic or in bad shape/lack mobility. This tour requires squeezing through a couple of tight spaces and sliding on ice. It was really fun....but something that we were not fully aware of when signing up. I had taken an expensive camera and backpack with me....only to have to leave my backpack in the trailer and have the guide help me navigating the ropes and my camera. I would have brought a small bag to hold my camera while on this tour....if I knew in advance. You are on your back a number of times during this tour. However, with that said, it was one of the best experiences that we had on our Iceland adventure and would not have wanted to miss it!
We really enjoyed this tour. Bo (for short?) was our tour guide and he was excellent. There is a 30-40 minutes ride in the Super Jeep followed by a short walk to the cave entrance. The walk to the cave was not difficult at all. Getting into the cave was a neat experience and also wasn't difficult. I was worried about pulling myself up a rope (not much upper body strength) but the ice makes it pretty easy. Make sure you wear rain pains/jacket as it is wet in the cave. We brought gloves, but didn't use them-it wasn't that cold in the cave. The ice formations were beautiful and much better than the other lava tunnels that we visited. The colors on the walls were very bright and colorful and the ceiling twinkled like stars from beginning ice formations. Absolutely wonderful! We had a great time and would easily do this tour again.
Very unique experience. Our guide was very knowledgeable. Need to bring waterproof gloves, shell, wear wool socks. I was worried that I would not be able to do this due to several tight spaces but it was very short and then cave opens up.
Unique exploration into iced cave with Alejandro. Very insightful explanation, incredible stalagmite views in un expected area, sufficiently challenging to get down to it, without being too difficult for anyone curious to see this amazing chamber of ice ! Plenty of tips during the tour, you cannot miss it if you are in Iceland !
We had an amazing time with Bo! My teen daughter puts this at one the best things we have done during our 2 week trip around Iceland ( And we did the whole circuit including the West Fjords) This should be in the list of must do for people who want a little adventure and a unique experience!
Thristy (sp??) was a tremendous guide with vast knowledge of local info. The cave is not for those with any physical disabilities but was so worth it to crawl, climb, and scoot down ice chutes. Our guide held his composure well with a family of idiots in our tour group….
We had a fantastic guided route through the Lofthellir ice cave today, getting to see amazing ice sculptures that are hundreds of years old! Our guide Steingrímur was just great, he knew all the details, was super clear and safe and also made sure we were having a good time all along. 100% would recommend. PS: you can find bookings for such tours a bit everywhere online but these guys are the OG ones and have the best offer imo
This was our "splash out" item for our stay in Iceland and it didn't disappoint, our guide was Birkir and he was fantastic. He'd spent the weekend rounding up his "sheeps" from the highlands. The drive to get to the lava field took just under an hour but he was explaining things all the way. We changed into our studded boots and put on hats. Make sure you have thick socks as this was the part that got cold. Waterproof gloves are useful because there are puddles on the ice in places and some crawling. There were 6 in our group so a nice number.
This was a geological WOW. Lava tube ice cave adventure. It was a great experience spelunking into another world. Our guide was fun and informative.
A wonderful trip inside the caves - truly an unique experience. Tip: wear two layers of wool socks and waterproof pants as there are some wet places. Ask for Birkir as your guide and you will have a blast!
Great experience - would do it again. Crawling through the opening wasn't as hard as we thought, but it was exciting. Our guide Bo was great - funny and knowledgeable. When he shone the light on the ice wall, it was truly breathtaking.
We went on the Lofthellir tour in October; the lava fields were already snow covered and the whole area looked like a real winter wonderland. Börkur, our guide, gave us interesting insights during the 45 minutes superjeep drive. We spend around 1 hour in the cave, and Börkur made it both a fun and educational exploring of the cave. Geo travel takes great care of the cave and keeps the human impact on it as low as possible in order to preserve this beautiful piece of nature. Highly recommended!
An excellent tour to visit a cave filled with ice "sculptures". Be prepared for a bumpy 30 minute drive to the start of the hike. Bring your headnet because the bugs were really bad as we tried to gear up for the hike. Also bring waterproof rainpants and gloves. I wore soft shell pants and got really wet! I would suggest being in decent shape to be able to do the tour. You will need to be able to pull and lower yourself with ropes while sliding on the ground to get in. The guide will light up the ice once in the cave and it was magical. Verify with the company where the pickup point is. It is listed correctly on their info page (Hike and Bike center ) on TripAdvisor but their webpage still has the wrong location (Myvatn Information Center). There were four of us sitting at the wrong location and it meant the tour guide was sitting waiting for us, and we were waiting for him, before one of us called the company to ask where they were. Not a great way to start the tour .
The Lofthellir Lava Tube Ice Cave tour was the highlight of our Iceland vacation! I don't want to say too much about it because you just need to experience it for yourself. I'm sure all the guides are great - but we felt lucky to have Thor as our guide. Again, I don't want to say too much, but request Thor if you can (especially if you are a Game of Thrones fan). Thor's family is from the Lake Mývatn area and he spent summers there growing up- so he can tell you all about the local area, people and history. On the drive to the cave, you will see rugged lava fields and learn about the incredible volcanic geology. When you arrive at the cave, you will be given a helmet, headlamp and studded boots for better grip inside the Ice Cave. It's all very well-organized. You will then be led slowly and safely into the cave by your guide. The entrance to the cave is the most narrow part- you need to crawl through- and there is lots of crawling, crouching, sliding, and walking on ice throughout the cave. As you move through the cave, the space gets bigger. This is a fabulous, unique cave experience. If you like caves, I cannot recommend it enough! HELPFUL HINT: Bring warm gloves (water-resistant if possible), waterproof pants, waterproof jacket, etc. Dress in layers, wear warm socks. You are going to get cold and wet. After all it's an ICE cave : )
First of all: Shout out to our guide Alejandro! Querido Alejandro, you do a super job and are an absolute highlight as a guide! Keep it up! Muchos saludos from "The German Bunch," as you called us :) A super great experience with you; the cave is definitely a mega highlight of our Iceland trip! Alejandro is a great guy who accompanied us throughout the day in a likable way with lots of humor and wit. As a trained geologist, he humorously told us many interesting facts about the volcanic landscape through which we drove to the lava ice cave. He also didn't leave out a single detail at the cave and enthusiastically answered all our questions about it. The cave is truly impressive, with a pool that you wade through to the entrance in appropriate rubber boots with spikes on the soles; then the entry through a hole in the rock. You have to crawl—still with enough space for people who feel anxiety in tight spaces but don't have claustrophobia per se (like me, for example). Additionally, exciting short slides over ice hills, all within a safe framework, of course. Alejandro helps every single person work their way safely through the cave sections. At this point, I would like to note that as a guide, he is not responsible for the correct clothing equipment. Please inform yourselves in advance about what clothing is recommended in a wet cave with icy temperatures. Do not take it out on him (or whoever your guide is) if you are pointed out on-site that you are not dressed correctly. Please inquire with the organizer in advance. Certain other participants in our group appeared in fabric pants and, unauthorized, walked around partly barefoot on the icy floor of the cave. They blamed him for it. Although he was not responsible for the unpleasant situation, he resolved it confidently and apologized to us dozens of times because it is very important to him that we have a great time. Thanks for a super great day!
Please be aware that this is not a standard tourist tour with comfort, lighting, Service or similar. Access to this cave is not easy. You have to climb, slide and walk carefully during the tour. But it's a real experience. Our guide, Runnar, explained a lot and took good care of us. In the end you are also a bit proud to have made it.
It was a very good experience! It was worth all the money to see the only real ice cave in Iceland. I have been in the ice caves by the glacier but this was much heavier! Alejandro as a guide can only be recommended. He had a lot of expertise and humor. 10/10 from here.
We had booked this tour a month in advance for our honeymoon. Tour cancelled by a simple e-mail the day before without explanation... totally disappointing and unprofessional.
Were in Myvattn for 5 days and stayed at hotel Laxa. Have visited the Myvattn highlights, snowmobile, northern lights, geothermal baths and ice caves. The guides of Geotravel are very enthusiastic, passionate about the area and give you the real Iceland experience. Each guide is very friendly and welcomes all tourists with a lot of passion about Iceland, have a good dose of humor and are happy to share all the facts about the area. During the trips get stuck 2x with our bus / jeep. Then the boss Anton was called who arrived with 10 minutes with a giant jeep to get us back on track. Make sure you have warm clothes and listen to their advice (some were wearing jeans!!). For example, they immediately tell you that Iceland is determined by the weather, and due to snow it may well be that they are sometimes 15m later than planned! Was a great experience, this is a holiday you can not do yourself (bad conditions due to snow, wind etc). You need good equipment and special transport for this!!
