From Grand Mosque on the way to the fish market we drive through the ministries and embassies area also we drive through the marvelous beach street, visit the fish and Vegetable Market, local peoples paying and selling fresh fish and seafood.
From the fish market, just a short drive to Mutrah Souq (Market) visit Mutrah Souq, Oman's largest traditional Souq, Mutrah Souq is one of the oldest marketplaces in Oman dating back two hundred years, it's located adjacent to the harbor of Muscat and has seen an immense trade in the age of sail, being strategically located on the way to India and China, it was named after darkness because of the crowded stalls and lanes where the sunrays do not infiltrate during the day and the shoppers need lamps to know their destinations, the name of the market has been drawn specifically from the part that extends from Al Lawatiya Mosque to Khour Bimba where the place is really full of stores and stalls and the narrow area of lanes does not allow the sunlight to enter, this ancient marketplace today features winding alleys of stalls selling antiques, traditional fabrics, aromatic spices frankincense, Perfume, silver, Omani sweet (Halwa), and fresh produce.
From Mutrah souq we visit Bait Al Zubair Museum, for a fine display of Omani culture and history and information about the Royal Family.
Continue your trip to visit old Muscat and see the Al Alam Palace, has a history of over 200 years, and was built under the watch of Imam Sultan bin Ahmed, the 7th direct great-grandfather of Sultan Haitham, the existing palace, which has a facade of gold and blue, was rebuilt as a royal residence in 1972, the inner grounds of the palace remain off-limits, but members of the public are permitted to stop near the gates and take photographs, the Palace is used for official functions and receives distinguished visitors, when you visit the main gates of Al Alam Palace, it's unlike any other capital you will ever visit, the palace itself is elegant but humble in design, unlike the grandiose structures of other capitals, elegantly designed, it features many highly polished marble surfaces, government buildings in the vicinity are white, with crenellated rooftops and wooden balconies in the traditional Omani style, though primarily a ceremonial palace.
Jalali and Mirani Forts, are forts in the harbor of old Muscat, the forts were built by the Portuguese under Philip I of Portugal in 1580 on an earlier Omani fortress to protect the harbor after Muscat had twice been sacked by Ottoman forces, it fell to Omani forces in 1650, during the civil wars between 1718 and 1747, the forts were twice captured by Persians who had been invited to assist one of the rival Imams, the fort was extensively rebuilt later.
From there we visit the Royal Opera House, he is majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said Al Said Sultan of Oman has been always a fan of classical music and arts, in 2001, the sultan ordered the building of an opera house, and it was officially opened on October 12, 2011, the Royal Opera House reflects unique contemporary Omani architecture, and has a capacity to accommodate a maximum of 1,100 people, the Royal Opera House complex consists of a concert theater, auditorium, formal landscaped gardens, cultural market with retail, luxury restaurants, and an art center for musical, theatrical, and operatic productions.

Excellent tour with a knowledgeable and friendly guide. Haroun was very professional and showed us the best of Muscat. Definitely recommended!
We did a half day city tour with Jafaar (he has a great sense of humor); He treated us to the best sites and is extremely knowledgeable about the city. He shared with us culture, tradition and gave us a greater understanding of Oman. How the country is developing and the beauty built out of a desert is amazing. All the sites we visited are well worth a visit
Haroun made a great job. As driver and guide, he showed us in a friendly and competent way the highlights of Mascat. Many thanks
Jaafar was an excellent and knowledgeable guide! We went to the Grand Mosque and observed the wonderful architecture of the buildings. In addition, we went to the fish market and fruit/vegetable market and by the Al Alam Palace for pictures. We adjusted the stops and he was very understanding and accommodating. His love for the city and country are clear. He was very warm and caring and helped us have an excellent t tour!
We booked this tour quite spontaniously and were not diasappointed. Our guide, Ali picked us up at the hotel, even earlier than scheduled and provided a cup of home-brew coffe and some dates as an icebraeker. We then went on the tour, where Ali took time explaining whatever we asked and even showing us additional things. In the Souk he made sure we got the best prices for our souvenirs. The whole tour felt like we were guided by a friend and not just a guide. 5/5 stars
Excellent tour with a knowledgable and helpful guide in Ali. Grand Mosque the highlight. Ali helped us with purchases in the souk. Highly recommended your and company. Covered everything we wanted to see in Muscat
We had Omar as our tour guide for a day and a half . You can’t see Muscat without a guide as all the sites are so spread out . Our highlights were a day trip to Nizwa the old capital and an amazing fort and great Omani restaurants. The city tour of Muscat included the largest and most beautiful and amazing Grand Mosque we have ever seen. The most beautiful Opera House. The Sultan'sPalace one of 4. We also went to a museum. Unfortunately the National Museum was closed. The embassy area along with a look at the lobby of the new Ritz Carlton al Bustan Palace For a local feel Omar took us to the seafood and vegetable market and the souq. A big thank you Omar who knows his history of this country and his culture. I can’t describe to you the topography you have to see it to believe it. Thank you Omar thank you Mazoon Tours and thank you Viator.
Jaafar was an amazing guide! Not only was he knowledgeable about all our questions, he made fantastic jokes and was very personable. The tour was fantastic and Jaafar provided us with water, recommendations and gave us time to wander on our own if we needed it. I highly recommend :)
Muscat is a city rich in variety - mountains and beaches on one hand and souq and malls on the other. The largest mosque in the Arabic peninsula, The Grand Mosque is majestic. A melting pot of many cultures in the intricate carvings, doorways, carpets and chandelier! Opera House is a tribute and a treat! The famous Muttrah Souq transports you to the Alladin's cave with its meandering walkabouts and rich cultural splendours. You will be spoilt for choice! Do indulge in spices, dates, perfumes, carvings and silver jewellery. A pleasant walk along the Corniche and the Sultan's ships in the harbour are it's other attractions. For a more local flavour, visit the Fish market or the Fruit and vegetable market. Get a glimpse of Oman and it's history in the Bait Al Zubair Museum. Visit the Al Alam for the royal experience and splendour. Round off your trip with walk on the beach, visit to the hypermarkets or indulging in local delicacies. Halwa and dates are a must..in whatever you may choose. A very very big thank you to Saeid for being extremely kind, generous and patient and making our day trip absolutely amazing!!! Kudos for the best recommendation for the shawarmas!
Me and my husband did this classic sight seeing in Muscat with Jaafar. We enjoyed it a lot and Jaafar was very kind and answered all our questions. We felt to get a little more insight in Oman and its society that day and reccomand the tour to every tourist visiting Muscat
Top trip. We saw everything and our guide gave us a lot of information about the country and it’s culture and people. I would recommend it to everyone. Nice way to get an impression of muscat.
This was a great tour and let us (my senior citizen mom & I) experience Muscat with a local. Way better than anything the cruise lines offered! Our guide answered all our questions and was incredibly kind. We don’t like shopping so we spent more time at the other sites. We highly recommend it! 5 stars plus.
We had a fabulous time on our private tour. Said was very knowledgeable and kind and was the best guide we could have possibly asked for. This tour is a must do (and if you can, request Said be your guide)a.
Our half day tour of Muscat was superb - but this was primarily down to our EXCELLENT tour guide - JAFFRA. He was extremely knowledgeable, spoke excellent English and made the tour incredibly interesting. Outstanding - thank you.
Our guide, Ahmed, was punctual, pleasant and professional. The vehicle was comfortable for our group of 4 adults. Ahmed told us about the sights and gave us ample time at each stop to explore and take photos. The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque was beautiful and worth the visit. We went to the Bait Al Zubair, a local cultural museum highlighting Omani life and history. Even though we toured the Mutrah Fish Market later in the morning, we were amazed at the variety of fish at each stall. The fruit and vegetable market in the opposite building was nice to wander through. Overall a nice tour.
Excellent tour and very friendly and knowledgeable guide. Jamal was our guide and showed us the highlights ofMuscat and got us bargains in the souk Mutrah too. Very knowledgeable and we were able to see places before the big groups came in.
My parents and I had a wonderful time exploring and learning about Muscat and its wonderful people with our guide. The tour stroke the perfect balance between cultural sights, incredible views and nature, and hidden gems.
Jaffar picked us up at the cruise terminal gate in a large, comfortable, air-conditioned, SUV - right on time. In fact, he was there when we arrived, 15 minutes early. He was friendly, personable, spoke English well, and had a passion for the area, so was an ideal tour guide. He took us to the Grand Mosque first. From there we went to the fish souk and the main souk. Plenty of time to look around. Then Jaafar took us to Old Muscat, where we toured a small museum and stopped for photos at the royal palace. There were some great views on the water as well. He also offered to take us to another museum (not scheduled on the tour). At the end of the tour, Jaafar agreeably dropped us off at the Muscat airport, where we parted ways. The tour was about 4 hrs, which was just right. We highly recommend this tour and Jaafar specifically.
It was great to have our own private city tour of the capital city. Tour guide was amazing took pictures like a pro explained everything and the best part that he was also our tour guide for a long day trip to the forts and to the Grand Canyon.
The tour operator communicated very well so we could be picked up right at the port. Jaafar was a wonderful guide for our short tour of Muscat. The vehicle was great and he spoke great English and gave us information as we went from site to site, telling us about facts and at each stop. Enjoyed this tour would recommend if you only have 3-4 hours.
The guide, Jaafar, was very knowledgeable and helpful. I enjoyed the tour. It was a great start to my visit of Oman because organising my own transport etc. would take a long time. Thank you! P.S. Make sure that you have suitable clothes for the visit of the mosque (women should have the whole body and head covered).
The tour was incredible, our guide Abdullah was extremely knowledgeable and welcoming. He answered all of our questions about the history and geography of Oman. He even suggested another trip with him to Nizwa and Jebel Akhdar which was perfect from start to finish. I highly recommend this activity.
Our tour guide, Said was knowledgeable and proud to share the history and beauty of his beautiful Muscat. We were very happy we chose a private tour as it gave us comfort and the flexibility to stay longer at the sites we wanted. The Qaboos Grand Mosque is extraordinary and it's architecture and symbolism fascinating. Said encouraged us to explore Mutrah Souq at our own pace. It was nice to not feel hurried! We visited the Palace, the Marina, as well as other landmarks for photo and exploring opportunities. Thank you, Said for sharing your amazing Muscat! We hope to visit again. This tour is highly recommended!
I have written hundreds of reviews and believe in the power of feedback: I hope you find my review helpful. This is the perfect first-day introduction to both Muscat and Oman and our guide, Salem, was the personification of hospitality, kindness and excellence. The best part of the tour for us was the views atop the Mutrah Fort. Just spectacular views and well worth the stairs to get there. We personally skipped the museum as was our choice. The Grand Mosque was amazing. Stunning. I cannot say enough about Salem. He was the perfect first-day ambassador as a tour guide. He put us at ease and allowed us to go with the flow. Well done, Salem! 1/2 day tour is perfect for your first full-day in Muscat.
This half-day city tour of Muscat was simply perfect – with our guide Abdullah we had the best guide you can imagine and actually booked two more tours with him (2. Nizwa and Jabal Shams and 3. Whadi Bani Khalid and Wahiba Sands). Already when clarifying some open points ahead of the tour Abdullah was very responsive and answered questions in no time. On the day of the tour he was already waiting for us in the lobby at the appointed time. Everything went well and according to plan and we got to see all the beautiful sights as listed on the itinerary. Abdullah even built it some extras. Abdullah is truly an excellent ambassador for his beautiful country, very friendly, courteous, open-minded and pleasant to talk to. Next to this he is very knowledgeable and shares a lot of information which made the tour a most enjoyable and valuable experience. We saw and learnt a lot on Muscat and Oman on that tour and can most warmly recommend Abdullah and Discover Mazoon Tours Oman to anybody.
Overall, a fantastic experience from start to finish. Our tour guide (Abdullah) was very friendly and welcoming from the beginning. His knowledge of the city of Muscat and the country of Oman, in general, was top-notch. A highly intelligent man. I can not recommend his service enough. The tour was very interesting and it really is the best way to see Muscat and learn about its history and culture. The price is also very reasonable for the quality of service that you receive. We even ended up booking another tour (Dolphin watching and Snorkeling tour) with the same company, which was also excellent and I would highly recommend.
Our guide for this half day tour was Salim. His local knowledge was amazing and made the tour. From the outset we were contacted by Abdullah to clarify everything and it just got better from there. Salim turned up exactly on time and he gave us an overview of his counrty on the journey to Muscat. Visited the following. Grand Mosque, Market, Souq, Sultans Palce & Fort. Very happy and would highly recommed. Best and most welcoming part of the middle east I have visited.
Excellent Informative guide. He was kind and patient. We learned so much of the customs and their government. Beautiful city, Enjoyable tour. Always a great tour arranged by Viator.
My tour of Oman was one of the highlights of my recent cruise. The reason why is Afaf Al-Abdullatif. She is one of the brightest smartest tour guides I have ever had an any tour overtaken around the world. She has a masters degree speak multiple languages in her English is perfect. She has a passion for country and she shows it he becomes infectious. My wife and I were absolutely overwhelmed by the quality of knowledge and dedication and going the extra distance that she did for us. She showed us the basic tour items but went the extra distance showing us more. I plan on coming back to Oman just because of her. Anybody to have her as your guide has just won the lottery.
We arranged this tour for our second day in Muscat. We were pleased when it was Abdullah who met us in our hotel lobby as we had read good reviews of him and his tour. The reviews are all accurate - he's a super friendly, easy going tour guide; he showed us what we wanted to see and filled us in with all the info we could need to properly appreciate what we were seeing. We did a half day tour starting with the mosque and ending at the Al Alam Palace and seafront with the souq and Bait Zubair in the middle and it was just right time-wise for us. I highly recommend Abdullah and Discover Oman tours for this short, fun, interesting intro to Muscat and Oman.
After flying in late the day before this was a great introduction to Muscat city and we received a lot of additional local information for our upcoming road trip through Oman. Abdullah is very knowledgeable and friendly and he explains the sights well. The mosque is spectacular, one of the 4 greatest mosque sights around the Arabic world and Muscat is beautiful. What a change from the hustle and bustle of Dubai’s commerciality and the crowdedness and many other problems of Egypt. (Not trying to be critical - we enjoyed out time there, but Oman and Muscat are very different. High recommend taking the tour with Abdullah at discoveromantours.
To really get to know a place, it is best to see it with a local. We were told Abdullah was the best, and he did not disappoint. He greeted us on time and showed us all the major highlights of this fascinating city. The Grand Mosque is an especially stunning gem!
Oman is a beautiful country. Throughout the tour, I noticed the unique beauty of this country and learned so much. The tour guide, Abdullah, is very knowledgeable. He is like a walking encyclopedia. He told me about things that you probably won't find in a book or online. The tour is well worth the money! I'm glad I chose it :)
We had a great time with Abdullah. He was on time, took us to all the places we desired and expected to see. Provided a good commentary about the city, the people and the country. Very well done.
Ali is a fantastic guide who speaks excellent English and knows how to explain everything about Muscat, Omani history and culture. It was a very valuable experience. I think I've seen more in half a day than most people have seen in two days. This tour is highly recommended.
We made a tour led by guide Haroun! A very friendly man who also taught us a thing or two about the customs of his country!
We had a half-day private visit with Haroun who proved to be a good guide and a kind person. With us there were our children of 4 and not even a year and the latter was not very cooperative for the duration of the tour but Haroun was never impatient and indeed was really cooperative even helping us in the management. All the stops were beautiful and interesting, I recommend the trip absolutely!
We had a wonderful tour with our private guide who told us everything we needed to know about Muscat and Oman! We would recommend the tour at any time and book again!
Our guide Haroun picked us up on time at the ship and led us to the highlights of the city. Informative and cheerful
Our guide was in good spirits for the first 10 min., then quiet afterwards. You can save the tour and prefer to take the taxi to everything. Saves 80% of the cost.
Our tour guide Jafaar was waiting for us on time in the lobby and accompanied us very competently and friendly through the individual stops of the tour. His English is very understandable and it's a nice balance of information, fun and also rest to enjoy the scenery. We felt very comfortable, I can only recommend the tour (even for Germans if you are a bit fit in English).
Tour complet de la ville très intéressant Mosquée magnifique guide sympathique qui ne regarde pas son temps
Salim picked us up at the hotel punctually at 8.30am. He then told us that I had to wear your scarf and a long-sleeved top to the mosque. The mosque is really worth seeing, Salim explained to us the building and customs around prayer and also the Koran in a very excellent way! Then we went to the fish market, which is impressive in other ways, as well as the Muthra Souk, where we bought incense and spices, Salim being an excellent guide and advisor. The tour also took us to the Sultan’s Palace, which can only be admired from the outside, and finally for lunch in a very excellent Omani restaurant. A tour you should definitely do!
Muscat, the capital of the Sultanate of Oman, is a fishing town but at the same time modern and cosmopolitan. We scheduled this tour and were very competently guided by Saleem, who led us to know the main points of interest of the city, including the view of the two forts built by the Portuguese who, unfortunately, cannot be visited because they are facilities occupied by the Oman military forces. It was a very well spent half-day, in a city facing the future, by the vision of its former governor, Sultan Qaboos bin Said Al Said who had died just a few days before our visit (in January 10).
