THE highlight of Salzburg! Built over 400 years ago, these are the world's best-preserved water features from this era. Experience "up close" how bored prince-archbishops surprised their guests... Open daily from 28 March to 1 November 2021. Ticket prices (2025): € 15.00 per adult, children (4 - 18 years): € 6.50
"Sixteen Going On Seventeen" - this famous movie hit was sung by "Liesl" and "Rolf" in front of the Gazebo in the garden of the "Trapp Villa" (the interior shots were filmed in Hollywood). Today you can admire the Sound of Music Pavilion in the park of Hellbrunn Palace, where it was moved after the filming.
Frohnburg Castle was built in the 17th century and today houses part of the Mozarteum University. SOM relevance: In the film it represents the front of Villa Trapp.
Leopoldskron castle is a former archbishop's summer residence from the 18th century and is now used as a hotel. SOM relevance: The building with its idyllic gardens and terraces on the Leopoldskroner Weiher represents the back of the Trapp-Villa.
Located in the south of the old town, on the historic Nonntaler main street, is the more than 300 year-old Erhard church. SOM relevance: Its Baroque façade and the neighboring house can be seen on a Sound of Music carriage ride.
Nonnberg Abbey was founded in 712 and is today the world's oldest Christian convent with an uninterrupted tradition. Outdoor shots can be seen at the beginning of the film.
By the end of 1920, the pedestrian bridge opened in 1903 was subject to a toll. Enjoy from the eastern shore one of the most beautiful views of the river Salzach, the old town and the fortress Hohensalzburg. SOM relevance: Or do a little dance here, like Julie Andrews did in the movie Sound of Music!
Admire the monument to the most famous son of the city here: the Mozart monument with baroque buildings and alpine peaks in the background is one of the most popular photo opportunities in Salzburg.
Sound Of Music relevance: In the pedestrian zones of the old town of Salzburg, some outdoor shots were taken: at Residenzplatz with the "most beautiful baroque fountain north of the Alps" and at the cathedral square. From outside free of charge! (optional): The interior of the Salzburg Cathedral was not visible in the film, but you should not miss a look into the baroque church together with your guide! Admission (2025): € 5.00 per adult
The Kapitelplatz offers great views of the fortress and the cathedral. Thanks to the baroque "Kapitelschwemme", once used as a water trough for horses, one feels transported to Italy! Market stalls in the square offer souvenirs and some sweets. SOM relevance: Julie Andrews can be seen here in one of the scenes.
(OPTIONAL --> if you have booked the 9.5 hour tour length please note: If you wish to visit this attraction, you may need to make time reductions at other attractions): From the 11th century Hohensalzburg is one of the largest and best preserved fortresses in Europe. If Napoleon had not come, it might never have been conquered. The entrance fee includes the ascent and descent with the funicular, a 30-minute audio guide and access to the spectacular Gothic prince rooms. Also spectacular is the view of the city and mountains. Prices (2025): € 18:00 per adult, children (6 - 14 years): € 6.80
If you look around the beautiful cemetery of the Archabbey of St. Peter (founded around 696), you will notice that the escape scene at the end of the movie was not filmed here (but in the 20th Century-Fox Studios in Hollywood). SOM relevance: However, one of the cemetery chapels was used for an interior shot.
This venue was hewn directly into the Mönchsberg in the late 18th century. It was used as an archiepiscopal summer riding school. With a capacity of 1,437 spectators, it is today one of the most important concert halls in Salzburg. SOM relevance: The famous "Edelweiss-" song was shot here. (optional and only by advance notification): The visit of the interior is only possible as part of a 1-hour guided tour (usually only once a day). Please contact us after your booking if you are interested in such a tour (admission approx. € 10.00 per adult)
This place, named after the famous Salzburg conductor Herbert von Karajan (+1989), is home to another baroque horse-back, and offers great views of the festival houses, the Peterskirche and the fortress. SOM relevance: This square was used for an outdoor shoot.
The Mönchsberg, which can be reached via a 30-second lift ride, offers fantastic views of the old town and fortress all the way to the Alps in the distance. SOM relevance: It was the beginning of the Sound of Music-"Do-Re-Mi-" scene. Prices Mönchsberg lift (2025): € 4.60 per adult, children (6 - 14 years): € 2.10)
"Mirabell" means "beautiful view", and hardly any view of the old town and its fortress is more beautiful than this palace from the early 17th century. Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau had it built along with its beautiful gardens for his secret wife Salome Alt as "Schloss Altenau". SOM relevance: Numerous singing and dancing scenes with 'Maria and the Trapp children' were filmed here.
Now we leave the city of Salzburg behind us and travel to one of the most beautiful areas of the Alps: the Salzburg Lake District ("Salzkammergut"). Look forward to an enchanting ride along numerous alpine lakes framed by rugged rock faces and lovely alpine meadows, which you know from aerial photographs from the Sound of Music. The crowning highlight is the Gothic-Baroque St. Michael's Basilica in Mondsee, where the wedding was filmed.
After just a few minutes' drive, we arrive at the first jewel of this enchanting area: The emerald green lake Fuschlsee, to be seen in aerial shots in the film, which offers excellent opportunities for lunch - not only for fish lovers; but you can also admire the architecturally outstanding building of the 'Red Bull' Headquarters from the outside.
Look forward to a stop at one of the most magnificent viewpoints of our tour: At our feet is Lake Wolfgangsee, picturesquely surrounded by the spectacular peaks of the Salzburg Lake District ("Salzkammergut"). Afterwards, you can enjoy a short walk along the panoramic promenade in the charming summer resort of St. Gilgen on the western shore of the lake, where also the birthplace of Mozart's mother is located. SOM relevance: Lake Wolfgangsee can be seen in the aerial photographs in the Filmintro.
OPTIONAL --> Please note: The visit of this attraction would be only possible when booking the 11 hour tour length, furthermore, you need to make time reductions at other sights of 2 hours (without cogwheel train ride), and approx. 4.5 hours (including cogwheel train ride!) The crossing by ferry to the tiny town St. Wolfgang with the world famous Inn "Weisses Rössl vom Wolfgangsee" will delight everyone. From here you can reach the valley station of the Schafbergbahn in just a few minutes' walk: Drive like 'Maria and the Trapp children' with the spectacular (steam) cog railway in 35 minutes to the 1,782 meters (5,840 ft.) high prospective mount Schafberg. Prices Boat trip (2025): € 10.60 per adult, children (4 - 14 years): € 3.60 Boat trip plus Cogwheeltrain (2025): € 63.30 per adult, children (4 - 14 years): € 18.60
On the scenic route from Lake Wolfgangsee to Mondsee, we drive along the shore of the lake of the same name, just like 'Maria and the Trapps'.
The Roman Catholic St. Michael Basilica replaces an earlier building from the early 12th century and fascinates with its gothic-baroque decor. Let yourself also be enchanted by the historic old town of the little town Mondsee! SOM relevance: The famous Sound of Music wedding was filmed here.
Relax on the way back to Munich in your comfortable leather seat and let the unforgettable impressions of this eventful tour pass through your mind again – your tour guide will safely take you back to your accommodation or any other address you want in the Munich area.

Karl was fantastic! The Salzburg Lake District was stunningly beautiful. Karl was extremely knowledgeable about the history and area gems! We truly enjoyed our conversation on the entire tour. The center of Salzburg was full of history, great places and fantastic food. We could not have had a better day exploring beautiful Salzburg, Austria! Thanks Karl... Danka!!!
A very worthwhile trip if you are a Sound of Music fan. Karl was an excellent guide, and he has so much knowledge about the history and culture of Salzberg. Also very accommodating when we asked if we could take a glance of the Eagle's Nest, and took a different route just for that! Make sure you ask for Karl when you book this trip.
Stefan picked us up at our hotel in Munich and drove us through the beautiful Bavarian countryside, the Austrian Lake District near Mondsee, St Gilgen, and Fuschlsee. He then took us to Hellbrunn to see the trick water gardens, the Sound of Music Gazebo, and all around Salzburg. He was kind, attentive, knowledgeable, and a wonderful guide and steward of our journey. He dropped us off at our accommodation in Salzburg as we had requested. This was by far the best way for us to see all that we wanted in a short amount of time on our trip!
Karl our guide was fantastic, showing us the historical sights, but also being flexible and taking us to a couple of Sound of Music locations not on the itinerary. We had a great time with Karl. We would recommend him and this tour.
One of the best tours we've ever taken. Karl was an amazing guide, from start to finish. He had water for us in the van, but that was just the start. He had so much information to impart, even on the drive, but it never felt boring. He did an incredible job pointing things out along the route, and tying them to either history or even his own personal experiences. After talking to him for a while in the car, he told us he thought we'd enjoy a short detour to the Red Bull Museum (yes, it's real) and he was right. What a cool place to see with all the planes and cars and things related to the company. Then off to the SoM wedding church where Karl again had lots of details about it. After that he took us to this absolutely gorgeous lake town where some scenes were filmed and may be one of the most scenic places we've been. And then it was off to Salzburg proper where he spent some time guiding us around to get our bearings, then left us to wander and shop and have lunch and see some of the SoM sights on our own that he had pointed out. And don't miss Mozart's house. When we were done there Karl took us to where we could visit the "back" of the house from the movie right along a lake and get pictures, and then to the park where the 16/17 gazebo is located. And though it was a long drive back, Karl was so entertaining and funny the time flew by. I wish I could give this tour 6 stars. Truly a great day.
Our guide Karl was excellent! My wife and I had allergies/colds and he made us feel welcome in any event. This was greatly appreciated. The tour was packed with sites to see including Sound of Music and old town sites. We loved them all. No regrets of any kind. Highly recommend
All the history was wonderful and then add SoM sites. We had a marvelous time. The food was awesome and to have a small group of just the 4 of us was nice. We paid for the private tour. Our guide was so knowledgeable. Learned alot.
Austria is beautiful, between the mountains and the lakes. This tour was very much worth it for just the view, but the additional history and sites were an added bonus.
Carl was a great tour guide. He showed us numerous sites from the movie. Salzburg was beautiful with good food. Great tour.
Stefan was an absolute tour guide. Very courteous , patient and knowledgeable of history and architecture. You must book this tour with him
This tour was the highlight of our trip to Europe in April 2024. Our tour guide was most certainly the most knowledgeable person on the Sound of Music and an exceptional guide. We spent four hours hearing about the moving and the making of the movie while he drove us from site to site in a lovely car. I highly recommend this tour to anyone who wants to learn more about the movie and Salzburg.
We had the most amazing day. Stefan was wonderful—accommodating and knowledgeable. And Salzburg was worth the drive.
Had a wonderful excellent day with our guide Maria. She not only introduces the places of where SOM were filmed but also gives us an insight history of the city Salzburg.
It was a wonderful tour of Salzburg and nearby lakes. Many Sound of Music landmarks were included. We saw the highlights of Salzburg and had free time to shop and have lunch. Recommend the "trick fountains" at Hellbrunn and the showroom at Red Bull as well. Stefan is very knowlegeable and was flexible with our itinerary. The van was clean and comfortable. It was a perfect day!
We had a wonderful time with Boris as our guide! Enjoyed seeing the sights from “The Sound if Music” as well as many other things along the way!! Boris even made sure to point out all of the Mozart sites in Salzburg since my 6yo is kind of obsessed with Mozart and made sure to leave us time (and good directions) to see both of the Mozart museums in the city while exploring on our own for a bit! Thank you for a wonderful day!!
What a great day with Karl seeing Salzburg and the Lake District. Karl was such a great guide and so much fun- we even stopped by the Lake District for a swim! I highly recommend Karl and this tour with this group- it was a highlight of our trip. We saw the Sound of Music stops and got insider tips on some great chocolates from Karl. Do yourself a favor and if you get Karl- ask him to play some music for you on the ride home!!!
The most memorable parts of the experience were Mozart’s birthplace, the SOM wedding church, gazebo, the Von Trapp’s home, the lake views and the tree lined roadway.
Our guide, Stephan was training another person. Stephen left us with this untrained guide (that had never even seen the movie, The Sound of Music before!) and he failed to point out important landmarks from the movie - the whole reason we went on the tour! We missed photos of the wedding chapel due to this! We were left on our own several times and we were afraid we would get lost - not exactly what you’d expect on a private tour! Stephen was very knowledgeable but his English was very difficult to understand, thus we missed things. Overall, we were disappointed in our tour.
Karl was a fantastic tour guide. We traveled Munich to Salzburg and then other spots of interest. He is personable, full of knowledge, fantastic driver. We were able to see Salzburg in a day, full of fun facts and neat spots. Definitely recommend this tour!!!
Karl was an amazing guide, providing a personalized, energetic tour of Salzburg and the surrounding area. Sausages, chocolates, and Sacher torte made the day extra special. We’d do this tour again in a second!
A correction of my mistake in my previous review. The wonderful, professional and most lovable guide, of whom I recommended in my previous review, Ramiro Paz from the Azori Islands, is from Faial (and not as I wrote by mistake from Terceira).
This tour was absolutely wonderful. Our tour guide for the day was amazing. He had so much knowledge of the area and its history. We enjoyed all the incredible sites we got to see. The drive was very relaxing. The whole day was just so much fun. Thank you again. Would highly recommend using this service!!!!!
This Day trip to Austria was amazing. Armin showed up dressed in lederhosen and asked us what would we like to see from the list of 20 places. He then started driving and explaining about things on our way. Armin speaks 7 languages and was translating to my wife to spanish and speaking english with me. Armin was super accommodating and attentive to all our requests. Armin brown is the best tour Guide.
Salzburg is an absolutely beautiful city filled with charm and history. The old city is amazing, lovely shops, Mozarts birthplace, places where the Sound of Music was filmed and great food. Armin was an exceptional tour guide. We talked about my interest in the movie The Sound of Music and he took us to all the places where the movie was filmed. A thoroughly memorable tour experience with an outstanding guide.
The back roads drive to Salzburg was so relaxing and Stefan gave good commentary that added to the trip. He was mindful of me needing to use a cane, and his willingness to take photos of me and my friends was kind.
Magnificent scenery through the Austrian Alps. So very exciting to be there at the spots where so many of the Sound of Music scenes were filmed. Can't say enough good things about our expert guide, Stefan. We had high hopes and even higher expectations, based on Viator's reputation. Stefan exceeded all of those really high goals. He was so knowledgeable, clear in his communication, helpful in getting us on foot beyond what he should have felt minimally obligated to do to allow us to see everything, extremely safe in his driving and helpful in explaining nuances of things we encountered like languages, geography and historical reasons for what we were seeing and experiencing. We listed the places we wanted to concentrate on from the Viator description when he first picked us up and he was confident and accommodating of our wishes. At one point there was the real risk that we would miss a lake ferry ride and he heroically got us there with some extra effort and advanced planning along the way to ensure we made the ferry. Just amazing effort. Don't hesitate to take this tour. You absolutely will not regret it!
Our extended family group of 7 adults had the pleasure and great fortune to have Stefan Rieg as our guide on a day long excursion from Munich to Salzburg and return. I had sent inquiries regarding such a tour to 3 guides on 26 May 2021, and Stefan replied on 27 May, the very next day. I knew immediately that he was the guide for us! Over the course of the next year, until our tour on 16 June 2022, he quickly and kindly answered each and every email question I sent him. When we finally met in person, it was truly as if we had been friends for a long time. Because we were a group of 7, Stefan had to secure a larger van than he usually used. He went right to work on that, and we knew we are all set before we ever finalized our reservation with him in June 2021. Our van was spotless and very comfortable. It had long been our adult daughter's wish to take a SOUND OF MUSIC tour in Salzburg, and Stefan truly came through for us. He had the movie soundtrack playing softly in the background in the van. He took us to every site that was featured in the film, and we always had a photo stop, not just a "drive-past." He even drove us all the way to Mondsee in the Lake District so that we could tour the Basilica of St. Michael, where the wedding of Maria and the Captain was filmed. Our tour was completely directed by us, as Stefan would ask if we wanted to see this or that, and then made it happen. We had as little or as long a time at every stop as we desired. We truly saw it all, and at just the right pace. Stefan is so knowledgeable about Salzburg, and we learned so much. We were joining our Insight Vacations tour the next day, but Salzburg was only a brief stop on that. Thank goodness we had arranged for this day with Stefan, as we would have missed so much of what we wanted to see. There are so many good things to say about Stefan as a guide and as a gentleman. I knew I had a big responsibility in choosing a tour for our extended family, and after our day with Stefan, we all agreed that he fulfilled our wishes. We all highly recommend him, and we are grateful to him for a wonderful day.
Great all day tour visiting Salzburg and surrounds. Our tour guide was not a Sound of Music expert, but was great with Salzburg and providing a tour just for us. He even took us to the German city of Schellenberg where my friend's mother was born. Certainly personalized service!
We had a lovely day in Salzburg and saw all the SOM highlights and more. This was our second day touring with Armin and it couldn’t have been better! I suggest that you try all of his recommendations!
