About Activity
Munich is a city of beer halls and baroque churches, but it is also the place where one of the twentieth century's darkest movements took root. On this private three-hour walk, you'll get to know the Bavarian capital in all its dimensions, from its medieval origins and royal splendour to its role in the rise of Hitler, guided by a local expert who can put it all in context.
On your private 3-hour walking tour, you will:

- Find out about Munich’s origins and the events and people who have shaped the city from the 12th Century to the present day;
- Begin in Marienplatz, the historic heart of the city replete with impressive buildings, including the New Town Hall with its famous Glockenspiel;
- See the impressive Odeonsplatz, and find out how it served as the focal point for National socialist rallies in the 1930's;
- Make your way along Viscardigasse, the small, narrow street that would become a symbol of quiet resistance once the Nazis came to power;
- Pass by the Residenz Palace for a crash course in the Bavarian Monarchy;
- Visit the famous Hofbräuhaus München, the historic brewery integral to Bavarian beer culture;
- Uncover how this iconic beer hall was also a regular venue for NSDAP (National Socialist Party) gatherings in the early 1920s;
- Discover Viktualienmarkt, Munich’s beloved traditional food market.
Your walk begins in Marienplatz, the city's central square and its civic heart for nearly nine centuries. Here you'll see how Munich grew from a modest medieval market town into the seat of Bavarian power, and how the square was devastated in World War II and painstakingly rebuilt. The neo-Gothic New Town Hall dominates the scene, and if timing allows, you'll watch its famous Glockenspiel put on its daily show, with life-size figures re-enacting scenes from Bavarian history.
From there, you'll make your way to the twin-domed Frauenkirche, the city's cathedral and most recognisable landmark, before continuing to the elegant expanse of Odeonsplatz. Framed by the Feldherrnhalle and the yellow façade of the Theatinerkirche, the square was the site of the failed Beer Hall Putsch in 1923 and later a focal point for Nazi ceremony and rallies. Just steps away, you'll slip down tiny Viscardigasse, the narrow lane where Munich residents once ducked out of sight to avoid being forced to salute at the Nazi memorial nearby, a small but telling act of quiet resistance.
Passing the Residenz, home to Bavaria's Wittelsbach rulers for centuries, you'll get a crash course in the monarchy that shaped the region's identity before arriving at the world-famous Hofbräuhaus. Founded in 1589 as a royal brewery, it remains the city's best-known beer hall. You'll learn about its royal roots and its place in Bavarian beer culture and also uncover its darker chapter as a regular stage for the Nazi Party's early rallies, beginning with the 1920 gathering at which Hitler announced the party's program to a crowd of thousands.
The walk winds down at Viktualienmarkt, Munich's beloved open-air food market, where the aroma of fresh bread, cheeses, and sausages offers a delectable glimpse into Munich's thriving beer scene and seasonal events. Your guide can adapt the route to the day's conditions and your interests, making this a flexible, conversational introduction for travellers who want both the highlights and the deeper story behind them.
