This tour was unforgettable. As I have read and studied a lot on the holocaust, it was important that I pick the right tour for this visit. It was my first visit to a concentration camp. It was certainly a sobering experience. Our tour guide, Sam, was phenomenal. He had an excellent handle on the subject matter. He also presented it in a tactful and sensitive manner. I appreciated when a couple of kids with a school group were loud and their moderator wasn’t doing anything about it, that Sam asked them to keep it down. It was obvious how serious he took the job he had to do that day. Walking through the gas chamber and crematorium, left me with an inexplicable numbness. It’s something I’ll never forget. No matter how much you read/study on the matter, nothing prepares you for that. I also picked this tour because I wanted to get a sense of the town of Dachau. The town is actually quite charming which is hard to grapple with knowing what lies behind just 10 minutes away. Sam took us to the memorial spot where 6 men - 3 of which were former prisoners and 3 locals - were executed by the SS for participating in a resistance group toward the end of the war. As much as you read and think you know about the holocaust, there are still so many stories yet to be told and heard. I’m grateful to Sam for sharing all the information that he has studied and learned in such a poignant and thoughtful manner.

Itinerary
At the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site, travelers follow a careful, educational route led by your guide who is officially certified by the memorial. After arriving by public transport, guests enter the former camp grounds and learn about the camp’s establishment in 1933, its role as the model for the Nazi concentration camp system, and the experiences of those imprisoned here. The guided visit includes key areas such as the former roll-call square, the barracks grounds, the perimeter and watchtowers, the religious memorial chapels, and the crematorium exterior. Throughout the tour, the guide provides factual historical explanation, personal stories, and opportunities for reflection, ensuring the visit maintains the dignity and seriousness of the site while giving travelers a clear, contextual understanding of its history and lasting significance.
After visiting the memorial site, travelers explore the historic town of Dachau on a guided walking tour that reveals a side of the area many visitors never see. Led by a certified guide, the walk covers Dachau’s medieval origins, its former role as an artists’ colony, and the everyday life of the community before 1933. Guests learn how the town was affected during the Nazi period and how it has confronted and commemorated its past since 1945. The route includes key historic streets, the old town center, and notable landmarks that illustrate Dachau’s long cultural history. A lunch break in a local Bavarian tavern (à la carte, not included) provides a calm moment to decompress, reflect, and gently transition back from the emotional weight of the memorial visit before returning to Munich.

This experience was one I’ll never forget. The trip out to Dachau was a sobering experience.Dachau and the history of the concentration camps is in most peoples conscious but most cannot relate what happened there to what we experience in our current geopolitical climate.Sam our amazingly knowledgeable guide was able to weave the experience and give such a good understanding of what happened in the past and how we can never forget how easy it can return if we don’t stay aware. The lunchtime break to Dachau town and Sam choice of a great Greek restaurant was exactly what was needed after such a sombre and emotional experience. The town and its history was beautiful.Im so glad we booked this particular tour out of the other offerings. Highly recommend the day and if you happen to get Sam you’re in for a treat! Thank you for such a sombre but great day. Never again to anybody.
Markus was a great tour guide, everything went smoothly and he made sure we all had a great experience getting to know this historical landmark, do not pass this opportunity up 100% recomended.
This was a sobering, but very informative, experience. Sam did a great job as our guide. We learned a lot and being at Dachau in person really made the history all come together. We really appreciated that this tour included a short visit to the old town part of Dachau as well as lunch together at a local restaurant.
The meeting point was easy to find and our tour guide Markus was outstanding. He provided a history of Germany post ww1 and his knowledge of Dachau was again excellent. It goes without saying that visiting Dachau is sad and could be overwhelming but Markus was quick to give us breaks and time to look at the exhibits. Go and you won't be disappointed.
Our guide, Sam, was fantastic - he made the whole trip super easy, and was extremely knowledgable and great to be around.
Very impactful, educational tour of Dachau Memorial Site w/Sam. Rest of tour in Dachau was fun, too! Sam, our tour guide, was very patient, as my husband and son have some mobility challenges. His insight, compassion and empathy were very much appreciated.
We just experienced a vertical formative tour of Dachau memorial site with Sam, who was incredibly knowledgeable. He delivered the information in a sensitive manner and the entire time felt like we were in very capable hands. After the tour of the memorial site, we took a bus into the old village of Dachau and had lunch (not included) at a delicious Greek restaurant. After lunch we walked a bit through the town into the old palace area where there are lovely gardens with a viewpoint of the entire surrounding areas and the Alps in the distance.
Sam was very knowledgeable about Dachau and provided lots of details for the tour. He also gave us some perspective about the current political climate, which was interesting to hear when compared to the climate during WW2. Lunch was great and the walk through the gardens was nice after the tour at Dachau. 10/10 would recommend him and this tour.
This tour was outstanding, the best one of my 12 day vacation. Our tour guide Sam was wonderful. He was extremely informative, kind and had the right temperament when describing the subject matter. I would highly highly recommend this your.
Sam was an extraordinary guide. He was knowledgeable and extremely helpful to our group which included two with mobility challenges. I learned so much about German history generally and Dachau specifically. We had lunch at a Greek tavern that was excellent and he even gave us other tourist tips. I highly recommend this tour.
Well experience on the history of Munich city and Dachau
Better than expected. Sam was exceptionally prepared. Not only provided a lot of statistical information (which as a history buff) I really appreciated, but helped us understand the how and why of what happened at Dachau during and after the war. I had a former co-worker who was a prisoner at Dachau (Max Steinmetz who wrote a book "Determined To Survive ") so this was insightful and poignant. Sam also went the extra mile after the tour to help us get to our next location Thank you Sam.
Great info and nice lunch. Sam was amazing and very knowledgeable, would highly recommend him and this tour.
Sam, our guide, truly made this an enjoyable and educational tour. The site is full of information, and Sam lead us through an easy way to absorb it all. Highly recommended tour!
We had a very impressive and informative tour of the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site. Our guide Markus was friendly, knowledgeable and explained everything clearly and respectfully. He gave us plenty of background information and took the time to answer our questions. Everything was well organised, including the journey from Munich by public transport. We would definitely recommend this tour and Markus as a guide.
Our tour guide Sam had extensive knowledge of the history of Dachau before, during and after WWII. The visit would not have been as meaningful without his detailed account of the Dachau concentration camp story. It was extremely helpful the way he planned the travel from Munich to the site. An extra bonus was having lunch in the town of Dachau. This tour is highly recommended.
Tim with The Local Experience was awesome‼️ He was right where we needed him to be at the train station. He and Sarah delivered our luggage to our hotel, so we could make the Dachau tour with Keith. Thanks to them, our tour was made possible on Sat. May 2 due to a Dachau schedule change for the original Sunday tour. This change was out of all of our control. The whole event went perfectly thanks to all of them. Jim & Alice 🫶🏼
Sam was an amazing guide! His knowledge of the subject was beyond deep, both on a technical, spiritual, and neutral political level. I would encourage anyone that wants a historical perspective with wit to choose Sam or any Guide from The Local Experience.
Our tour guide was Sam and he was amazing. Really informative and more than happy to answer any questions. The meeting time allowed us to miss most the big crowds. Very respectful throughout the whole experience for the memorial site. Would highly recommend.
From start to finish this tour was fantastic. Our guide Sam was informative, friendly and answered all of our questions. We felt that Sam helped us explore the sight with sensitivity and empathy focusing on the stories of those incarcerated within it's walls. The addition of the opportunity to see the town of Dauchau after visiting the memorial was an excellent addition to the tour, particularly as over lunch we were able to digest and discuss what we had seen and unpick this further, rather than jumping straight on the S Bahn back to Munich. It gave us time to reflect upon and process what we had seen. A huge thank you to Sam, as his knowledge and guide skills were exceptional.
The guided tour was great, but a bit fast during the Dauchau memorial, for the rest it was great.
This tour was fantastic! I highly recommend doing this early tour of the memorial as it gets very crowded very quickly. It was nice to not have all the big groups around. Sam was a great tour guide. He is very knowledgeable about the memorial and just the history around the area as well. Having lunch and touring Dachau was a great ending to the tour. It was nice to see the old town and learn about the townspeople before/during/after the war. The palace gardens were beautiful and the view was just icing on the cake!
Very interesting and respectful tour. The town visit at the end is a nice addition.
We were extremely fortunate to have Sam as our guide for this experience. We met in Munich where Sam escorted us by train and local bus to Dachau. Upon arrival Sam guided us though the camp highlighting all of the important aspects of the history of Dachau, and how it served as a model for others that followed. He also detailed the life of a prisoner while in the camp. Following our tour of the camp we caught a local bus into the old town of Dachau where we went to a local Greek restaurant for lunch. Very good meal and friendly service. Following lunch we did a walking tour of the old town where once again Sam highlighted many of the important historical sites in the town. He escorted us back to Munich via train where we thanked him for such a phenomenal experience. Sam was extremely knowledgeable and sensitive during our time at the camp. If considering taking this tour I would highly, highly recommend using Sam as your guide. You will NOT be disappointed!!😊
I had a fantastic experience on this trip. Sam was a fantastic guide who obviously has a deep knowledge and respect for the historical context of the tour. Meet uo and getting to Dachau couldn’t have been smoother and the meal/walk around Dachau old town was an added highlight. I’d gladly recommend this tour.
This tour was great and so worth it. Sam is very knowledgeable and gave a great amount of information and detail. Lunch was delicious and the tour of the town is a great add on. Would recommend!
Sam was very knowledgeable and nice. We enjoyed the whole tour, getting to learn the history behind the site and looking around the town.
Our visit to Dachau was a powerful and moving experience today. The memorial site is presented and provides an important insight into a dark chapter of history. A special thank you to our guide, Sam, whose knowledge, passion, and respectful approach brought the stories and history to life. Sam was informative, and happy to answer questions, making the tour both educational and memorable. Highly recommended. Excellent day was had at Dachau, followed by a lovely lunch and a tour of the old city. The early start was perfect, and finishing around 2 pm left plenty of time to enjoy the rest of the afternoon exploring Munich. Thanks again Sam
Our tour with Sam was phenomenal! He was a great tour guide and knew so much about the camp and everywhere we went. He took us to a local food spot in between the site and town tour. I highly recommend this tour to anyone coming down to visit Dachau
This was an excellent experience. Sam was our tour guide; he was incredibly knowledgeable, attentive and engaging. We learned so much on this trip and had an opportunity to get our questions asked. We were able to get a rich understanding of the history as a result. I would recommend for everybody to do this tour.
My husband and I had a wonderful experience touring Dachau. Our guide, Sam, was very personable and very knowledgeable. After our tour of Dachau we had a delicious lunch at a Greek restaurant. Thank you, Sam for a very informative and wonderful day. I would definitely recommend this tour.
Had a great tour with Sam. He was personable and very informative on the history of the Dachau Concentration Camp and other camps around the region. He is very knowledgeable about Nazi history and general history of Munich and Dachau areas. We concluded with a great lunch and tour of the palace grounds.
This wasn’t a trip I had originally planned when I came to Munich, but I’m very glad I decided to visit Dachau Memorial Site and the town of Dachau. It was a deeply moving and important experience, and one I would absolutely recommend to anyone spending time in Munich. We were very lucky to have an excellent guide, Sam, who is incredibly knowledgeable and engaging throughout the day. He answered all of our questions, and share a lot of his knowledge on the subject. We chose the option that also included the town of Dachau, which I’d highly recommend. Dachau itself is a lovely town, with a beautiful palace, stunning gardens, and incredible views of the Alps. It was a wonderful contrast to the memorial site and made for a very worthwhile and memorable day overall.
Choosing such a visit creates apprehension, a form of collective guilt as Europeans. It is with two of my teenagers that I chose to visit this place steeped in history. We were incredibly lucky: a passionate and fascinating guide: Sam. He took the time to explain the past and the present to us. Besides his mastery of the subject, we were able to discover Dachau and one of its beauties, the Hofgarten Dachau - court garden at Dachau palace... Which goes to show that anything is possible... Sam knows how to respect everyone's pace; to adapt and be attentive to both the older ones and the younger ones. He also tried to speak to us in French. Truly kind. We really recommend it!!!
