Itinerary
We’ll meet at 8:40 a.m. at Sonnenstrasse 1, 80331 Munich. There you’ll find a tour bus marked “Mentor Reisen,” and our friendly driver and guide will welcome you as you check in. We’ll depart at 8:50 a.m. and drive past several Munich landmarks (which the guide will explain) on our way to the first stopp Hohenschwangau.
First, you can take a guided tour of Hohenschwangau Castle (additional fee depending on the option). Built in the 12th century, the castle was purchased by King Ludwig II’s family in 1832 and rebuilt in the Neo-Gothic style. It served as the royal family’s summer and hunting residence.
This castle you can visit with a guided tour inside for an additional fee (optional)
The Marienbridge can be visited, from which you have a great view at Neuschwanstein Castle. In winter, the bridge is usually closed for safety reasons.
This lake is located right next to Hohenschwangau Castle. You can visit him in the free available time. Also suitable for bathing in summer.

The castles themselves were brilliant! Our tour guide however was the worst woman ever. Barbara was her name. Her English was marginal, when you asked her a direct question she kept answering with the full itinerary instead of the actual question. Thankfully I can speak German and I eventually stopped her from repeating the same script yet again and went through the questions that my little group of new friends wanted answers to with her in German. She never came on the tours with us and just directed us where to go when done. We basically took care of ourselves and stayed together without her. I have never in the many tours I have taken, in the many countries that I’ve been, experienced a tour guide as uninspired and as off putting as Barbara. But please do visit the castles as they are wonderful.
Our tour guide Barbara spoke bad English and was VERY unprofessional and unprepared for the trip. She would read information about the sites off of her phone and would not speak clearly or loudly into microphone. She made the tour instructions, time, meeting points etc VERY confusing. Several of us asked her multiple times very directly and she was still confusing to understand. It made our trip stressful and the first part unenjoyable. A tour guide should be enthusiastic, knowledgeable and very clear on instructions etc. The castle tours were great because they were self guided. Our bus driver was fantastic and got us there on time despite construction. Also the tour did not mention no elevators and a need cash.
Great experience all around! The tour guide was very knowledgeable and personable and all the logistics ran very smoothly. The castles were super cool!!! The tour did a nice job of balancing between time with the group and time to explore at leisure; I never felt rushed nor that I was waiting around. If you’re looking for a no-hassle way to learn about and explore the castles, definitely sign up for this tour!!
Great day!!! MUCH better than I expected. The castle was magnificent. My guide was perfect and his little dog herschel was a great little addition. All I all a long day that went quite quickly due to the magnificence of the Bavarian scenery and the castles.
This is a very effective way to see these two castles. It is a smooth bus ride, and the tour guide effectively shepherds you through the day more so than providing a lot of the information - gets you to the shuttle to see the bridge, reserves a spot at the restaurant for lunch, sets expectations about how long it takes to walk places. The tours in the castles are short (30 ish mins) and either with audio set or in-house tour guide. That being said, this was a good value and pleasant day trip.
We had a wonderful tour with David Croome! He was very knowledgeable, shared lots of interesting information about the castles and their history, and happily answered all our questions. His positive energy and friendly manner made the experience even more enjoyable. Everything was very well organized, and the tour was excellent from start to finish. We highly recommend David and this tour!
David was a wonderful tour guide. Very punctual and informative.
David was a brilliant tour guide who shared lots of interesting information and was able to offer advice on good spots to get lunch/snacks. The castles were absolutely beautiful and very interesting to learn about. The only downside was that it was a day when there was low cloud so we didn’t get the famous shot of the castle - but that’s outside anyone’s control! Highly recommend this tour operator if you are looking for an informative and enjoyable experience.
We were extremely disappointed with our experience and felt rushed throughout the entire tour. From the very beginning, it seemed like the guide was more focused on keeping a fast pace than ensuring everyone in the group was able to enjoy the experience safely and comfortably. Our first stop was a lookout point that required us to hike along a steep and potentially dangerous trail. Unfortunately, my wife slipped and fell multiple times on the path. What was most concerning was that our guide was nowhere to be found when this happened and offered no assistance or support. As a result, we felt unsafe and largely left to navigate the trail on our own. Traveling with children made the situation even more difficult. Our kids struggled to keep up with the pace, and instead of being given time to enjoy the sites and scenery, we constantly felt pressured to hurry. Much of the tour felt like we were running from one location to the next rather than experiencing and learning about the destination. Because of the rushed schedule, we even missed portions of the first castle visit, which was one of the highlights we were most looking forward to seeing. This was extremely frustrating, especially considering the time and money invested in the tour. Overall, the experience did not meet our expectations. A good guide should prioritize the safety, comfort, and enjoyment of the group, and unfortunately, we did not feel that happened on this tour. We left feeling disappointed and dissatisfied, and based on our experience, we would not recommend this guide to others.
Controversial opinion; the most famous castle isn't the best one. It's worth taking the bus up and walking back down from Mariensbrück but if you're scared of heights, skip the bridge although.
David is very nice and knowledgeable. Everything is very well organized, with a very clear schedule. The coach is comfortable and spacious. I didn’t feel rush, we were given enough time to go around and sightsee.
David is super professional. Great arrangement for the day. We are happy birds!
Christine provides so much interesting information during our trip to the castles. We met the tour in Munich and drove to the castles. It was a lovely day, and I recommend it highly.
It was very nice trip well organized and the Driver was very safe, the tour guide Cherstina was very friendly with us and best tour guide.
Had a wonderful day seeing the castles. Christine, our guide, was very friendly and informative. Highly recommend!
What a great day! Although it started rainy in Munich, it cleared up enough for the sun to come out when we got there! Our tour guide was able to give us so much information before even arriving to the castles. Would definitely recommend!!
Fantastic day out, very well organised and the whole trip was memorable. Sabina was a great guide, informative, friendly and helpful from start to finish. The castles were outstanding, absolutely worth a visit if you have time when staying in Munich.
Sabine was very knowledgeable of the area and the history. She was able to answer any questions. She recommended a resturant that was good for lunch, made the reservation for us and got us out on time for the tour. She planned the entire day to a T with 2 castle tours and it all went smoothly. Highly recommend Sabine!
The castles were beautiful and Sabine the tour guide was wonderful!
Sabine was great and the two castles we visited were fantastic. 10/10 would go again
Sabine was such a delightful and knowledgeable guide! This was an absolutely priceless trip of a lifetime. Thank you so much!!!
Our tour guide was great! She was upbeat, friendly & very patient! She had to navigate a crying baby the ride to the castles & gave her very best on the bus to give us info. She even tried to help the mother & baby. She went above & beyond giving lunch suggestions, great viewing spots & was sweet natured when people were late back to meeting spots. We had a great day & highly recommend Sabine!! Thank you, J & L
Sabine was wonderful! She was patient, kind, knowledgeable and funny. My only complaint was the screaming baby on the entire drive up and first part of the castle tour. My recommendation would be if there are children known to be on the tour and disrupt the rest of the shuttle they should be asked to find alternate transportation as to not ruin the experience for everyone else.
Great experience with Sabine and an amazing day.
Nice tour, great tour guide! Very simpathic and solicity. Her recomedation of restaurant was also very good!
Sabine was a great tour guide. fun interactive and informative. sherry and David Northwest Territories Canada
The castles we great, and Sabine was an excellent tour guide. She was very fun and knowledgeable. The bus was comfortable and everything was on time.
Sabine made the trip fun and the bus ride go quick. Her history knowlege was great and complimented the guided tours. She also miraculously kept us all together and on time for our schedule tour times.
We had a wonderful tour thanks to our guide, Sabine. She was perfectly organized, friendly, knowledgeable and patient with the group. (One criticism: Another guide, Pedro, was extremely rude to us during the boarding process. Avoid Pedro and you will have a good time.)
The purest landmarks and the magnificent castle , we are surprised with the views. we came from Armenia and got attracted 😍😍
Sabine was wonderful! She’s from Bavaria and gave us lots of helpful tips and information throughout the trip. LOTS of walking, but absolutely worth it. Neuschwanstein was even better than I thought it would be, and the lake was so beautiful.
The tour was awesome! Christine and Habil are a great team. Christine had some great stories and fun facts. FYI, you can't take pictures in the castles.
We had a great time in this tour! Charlie was an amazing guide and communicator. He has the best advice and was a wealth of knowledge. We only wish we had more time to see the inside of Neuschwanstein Castle, but that seems to be how the castle operates things, and is no way an indicator on the quality of this tour. We would recommend doing this!
A great day touring the castles and seeing the beautiful countryside around them. Our guide, Christine, did a wonderful job providing all the history for us. A little bit of a longer day from Munich, but well worth it.
It was a wonderful time. Christine did a fantastic job and providing us pertinent knowledge in preparation for the castle, even passing through the small teams she did an amazing job sharing some stories. My only negative thing to say would be that the price isn’t the best. While I paid $130, or so for our tickets , it didn’t include the $48 addition per person for the tour of both castles (30 minutes each roughly) and no lunch. Yes, I am aware that it is mentioned that it is not included, still is a negative though. Specially considering I have had similar all day tours and they either included lunch, or atleast included tickets for entry. All in all, thank you Christine , my wife and I truly enjoyed our trip with you!
Christina with mentor reisen was a great guide- gave a wonderful history about the castles and very organized and clear about the itinerary - we left at 9:15 am, arrived at the ticket center by 11:30 and had time to see the museum of Bavarian kings before taking a horse carriage to hohenschwangau and had time to take photos in the garden before our 1 pm 45 minute tour; we walked back down, had a grab and go sandwich then caught the 2:30 pm shuttle bus to the bridge and had time to walk to the spot up the road behind the bridge which is a good alternative if the line is too long for the bridge; we had plenty of time walking down to neuschwanstein and took photos along the way and outside the courtyard before entering the courtyard at 3:25 pm for our 4:10 pm tour and took photos above the courtyard and still had plenty of time before our 30 minute tour; after the tour we bought souvenirs at the gift shop, snapped quick photos off the balcony of the bridge, saw the final exhibit of the castle model on the way out, took photos at the viewpoint and hustled to the horse carriage; the carriage took a while to leave but we made it just on time to meet our bus at 5:45 pm back to town and arrived at 7:40 pm; I think meeting at the bus at 6 pm would have been better to provide enough time to get down the hill and allow time for the last exhibit and taking photos at the balcony near the gift shop and the last viewpoint on the way out; also to allow time for the horse carriage ride back to town; although Christina showed us a short cut path to walk down it is steep and not ideal for older folks with knee issues; otherwise a great experience and very well organized!
We took the Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau tour from Munich. The bus tour company itself was excellent. Everything was well organized, transportation was comfortable, and our guide was terrific. The reason I’m giving the overall experience four stars instead of five is the experience inside the two castles. Those tours are operated by the castles, not by the bus company, so I don’t fault our guide or tour operator for this. Both castle tours felt incredibly rushed. Groups are scheduled very closely together, and there was another group immediately behind us throughout the tour. We were moved from room to room with almost no opportunity to stop, look closely, or really absorb what we were seeing. These are extraordinary places, and it was frustrating to feel that we were being hurried through them instead of having time to experience them. I would still recommend this tour company and especially our guide. I just think prospective travelers should know that the actual tours inside Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau may feel much more rushed than they expect.
Lucy and Rexhev were amazing. Lots of great info shared on the bus ride that complimented both tours very well. Highly recommend
Lucy was an excellent guide for the whole trip, providing us with background and history to Munich, Bavaria and the castles along with recommendations while we were there. Rexhep was a wonderful driver. Both made sure the trip went perfectly. Highly recommend.
Christine was very helpful, informative, friendly, and made the experience enjoyable and memorable. I would recommend this castle four and our tour guide, Christine! Danke!
Yay it was so great! Easy to find the meeting point and our guide Christine was so great in providing info and little tips for the area. Definitely worth the money and experience. Neuschwanstein and hohenschwengau were so incredible
Christine was great. Loved the tour to the castles.
Good trip, well worth it. Count on a lot of walking, some steep climbs to Neuschwanstein, and lots of stairs. Our tour guide, David, was interesting and took great care of us.
We really enjoyed our trip. The castles and scenery were amazing. Christine, our tour guide , was very knowledgeable and interesting , telling us the story of Ludwig ll and his castles. She also made all the information about our itinerary very clear, including directions, meeting times and places.
Great experience and well organized. Plenty of time to do your own thing while still getting to see both castles, which optionally we took tours inside. Our bus driver Agron was excellent and our guide Christine was very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful.
We really enjoyed the day with Christine and Agron. 10 hours seems like alot, but it goes by fast, and there is alot to do. We saw two castles, Hohenschwangau and Neuschwanstein. There are horse drawn carriages or a shuttle to take you to the entrance to each, but there is still a walk uphill to get to the entrance. Inside each castle is a walk as well. I have a respiratory disease, but was able to do the castles with resting in between the stairs. Walking down from both castles was fun and not difficult for me.
We had a great time. Christine was an excellent guide. Always there when we needed her. However the ad should have warned us about the amount of walking involved.
Guide Christine was absolutely fantastic. Admission fee and trip was a bit pricey. It was long enough. Key feedback is about how you get to and from the castles. There is very significant and difficult walking both to get to the castles and within the castles. A lot of other people were older and this was definitely problematic. The operators need to improve drop off and pick up devices direct to the castles and there’s needs to be more seeting along the way for breaks.
Christine was extremely knowledgeable and very friendly. Very positive experience.
