It was an amazing day! I'm so glad Rodrigo picked us up at 6:30 am. It was a 2.5 hour drive to the preserve, then we took horses up to very near the viewing point, so we got there when the Monarchs were still waking up and got to experience them slowly warming and fluttering and then cascading toward us. At the end, they were swirling about us and were everywhere as we headed back down the mountain. Rodrigo is a fantastic guide. His English is excellent, and he's very knowledgeable on every subject. He's a good driver and his car was roomy and clean. Highly recommend this experience!

e took 3 separate tours with Rodrigo of Yei Tours. First we did the Morelia city tour. Second we did the Butterfly Sanctuary tour to El Rosario. Third we did the Butterfly Sanctuary tour to Sierra Chincua. My 2 adult sons joined my husband and I us for the tours. From the very beginning of planning this trip, Rodrigo communicated promptly and professionally with exacting information to help us with this trip. My husband has mobility issues and Rodrigo made adjustments to the tours to accommodate my husband so he was able to participate fully in all 3 tours. Words cannot express my gratitude for this caring and compassionate treatment so we could all be together on this trip. We all felt so totally taken care of and loved our experiences in every way. traveling in a foreign country and not speaking the language can be somewhat daunting - Rodrigo speaks perfect English and has such an engaging easy demeanor. Such an enjoyable experience in every way I would highly recommend Rodrigo with Yei Tours for your trip to this area and would use him again for any future trips. Thank you Rodrigo for such a perfect 3 days🥰🩷
Rodrigo was an amazing tour guide. We scheduled a private tour with him to visit Sierra Chincua sanctuary. He picked us up at our hotel at 6:30am to get to the Monarchs early. We saw the sun rise above the mountains on the drive. It was a beautiful and peaceful drive. We arrived so early that other visitors had not arrived yet. The walk up is beautiful, so many hummingbirds and native flowers blooming. We had a sunny day in late January and the Monarchs were very active. We started to see them flying around as we were venturing up. When we arrived near the top the Monarchs began to wake and fly around as the sun hit them. It is truly an unbelievable experience! Thank you so much Rodrigo! Dream come true.
Rodrigo was a wonderful guide. Very knowledgeable and he was able to get us to the sanctuary early in the morning before the large crowds and we were able to stay longer to observe the monarch’s taking flight. Amazing!!!!
This was a fantastic experience, and I'm so glad I booked it with Rodrigo. He's a wonderful tour guide, generous with information, and provides an absolutely amazing experience to the reserve. I will be back Rodrigo!
My husband and I went with Rodrigo and he was amazing. He has such wonderful knowledge and his excitement about the butterflies and the magic of nature is contagious. I recommend him a million percent.
Rodrigo is a wealth of information, gracious with superb language skills. Great attention to detail Our trip to the butterfly sanctuary will be a truly memorable experience thanks to him.
I'm NOT a morning person so getting up at 5am for a 6:30 start is anathema. With little sleep and no breakfast we were driven by Rodrigo, possibly the best tour guide ever to El Rosario Sanctuary. We had a wonderful, (use all the superlative adjectives here) experience. This was absolutely a once in a lifetime, bucket list experience. Transcendent. Can't recommend highly enough. Rodrigo BTW is extremely friendly, personable and a wealth of knowledge. Also, thoughtfully provided little touches like trekking poles and a boxed lunch for after in addition to bottles of mineral and natural water.
An early rise is definitely worth it to beat the crowds. Rodrigo is very knowledgeable and I learnt a lot from this trip as well as seeing the beautiful countryside and the amazing story of the Monarch butterflies.
The trip with Rodrigo to visit the Monarch butterfly sanctuary was an unforgettable experience. Rodrigo is a good guy and knew all about the butterflies as well as answering all our questions. Our morning began at 6:30am as Rodrigo picked us up at our residence and off we went. The ride to the sanctuary is two hours each way. The cool thing with Rodrigo is you get to arrive at the butterflies while they are still sleeping, then the sun slowly opens which warms their body as they begin flying around. It was so cool to be able to see them going from sleep to flying around. By then it was noon time and time to head back down the mountain. Rodrigo provided an enjoyable box lunch and drink for the ride home. We arrived back at our home at 3:00pm which allowed us more time to continue visiting beautiful Morelia.
Rodrigo was our private guide and he was so knowledgeable and patient. (I was recovering from a cough so the uphill was a bit tricky). But it was a great tour nonetheless. I highly recommend.
This was a once in a lifetime bucket list item for my wife. We were picked up at 6:30am at our hotel by the rockstar tour guide Rodrigo for the two-and-half hour drive to Sierra Chincua. Why so early? Not only does he travel early so we see the monarchs clinging to the branches before the sun heats for the day and they fly away, but also to arrive before the crowds do. We were the third car to park and literally saw no other visitors until 30 minutes after we hiked to the observation area. The solitude with just us and the butterflies was amazing for that short time, while we passed hundreds of visitors heading up as we were leaving. The hike itself is not terribly challenging if you are in decent shape but the altitude is an issue so expect many stops to acclimate. Rodrigo, who by the way knows everything about the monarchs, lent us hiking poles and binoculars and provided a nice box lunch for the trip home. If you are bringing a real camera, plan on at least a 200mm lens. My phone camera has a 5x zoom and was fine but a camera may have been smarter to bring. If you are debating the cost, it was worth every penny for us but we are butterfly people.
Absolutely amazing. I believe this is the first time I’ve ever rated anything on trip advisor as a 5 out of 5. So rest assured that I don’t hand out 5 stars lightly. The experience was a must see , the life of the monarchs are so amazing and to see them in such a large colony stunning. Rodrigo was a top notch and knowledgeable guide. It’s was an amazing trip of a lifetime in every way. Highly recommend you to add it to your bucket list.
My personal opinion it was average , the weather was nice, the hike spectacular, Mother Nature never disappoints, how ever the drive it was no fun .
Rodrigo is probably the best tour guide I have ever had, extremely knowledgeable and conscientious . I hope to be able to use him again.
We were fortunate to have Rodrigo as our guide. He made the trip a joy, showing care and concern for our needs the entire day. The visit to Sierra C. is absolutely worth a vist, and we arrived early so and had the whole place to ourselves. Although the monach population is down by over half, there were still plenty and watching them was mesmerizing. It just doesn't get much better!
Beautiful, loved seeing the butterflies. Rode the horses which we would highly recommend. Hike after the horses was very strenuous.... but worth it!
We departed Morelia very early, at 06:30. As a result, we were the very first up the mountain and were able to view clusters of butterflies in the trees waiting for the weather to warm up. No one else was there to experience this. When the sun hit the branches where the cluster of butterflies were, they simultaneously dropped from the branches and flew towards us by the 1000’s. At this time, there were only a few other people present to see this. As we were leaving, larger tour groups were arriving who would have misses everything we experienced, it was great. Anyone planning a trip should try to book a private tour that leaves early and see how the monarchs reacted to a slight change in weather.
It was spectacular!!! Highly recommend. Rodrigo the tour guide was fabulous. Very knowledgeable about the area.
Rodrigo was fantastic & very informative. We talked not only all about the monarchs but also about everything Mexican. He was extremely knowledgeable & spoke English very well. I highly recommend him to anyone interested in all things Mexican.
Rodrigo Rosales of Yei Tours has curated an excellent day trip to visit the Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary. Meticulously planned for your enjoyment, it kicks off with an early 6:30am start for several good reasons: 1) You skip heavy traffic getting there, 2) Parking isn’t an issue once you arrive, 3) You avoid the crowds that arrive later in the day (e.g. schools make this excursion part of their curriculum), 4) The butterflies are just beginning to wake up with the warmth of the sun so you get to see tree branches drooping with the weight of 4-5K monarchs, and 5) You return before the hot mid-day sun at an altitude of 11K feet bakes you into the landscape. Having worn shoes fit for a hike, we were nonetheless very appreciative that he offered hiking poles as most of the 3.5 km dirt path to see the butterflies has uneven surfaces (stones, tree roots) and moderate changes in elevation. He supplied us with water, carried a first aid kit for our safety, and provided a box lunch afterwards (sandwich, juice, and cookies). Rodrigo expertly navigated the hairpin curves on the mountain roads; his vehicle is immaculate and comfortable. He takes care of all the transportation from toll booths to entrance fees, etc. Honestly, all you have to do is show up to experience of one of the world’s most awe-inspiring natural wonders!!
I loved it all! The experience is really one of a kind and Rodrigo is the best guide ever! If you wanna see the monarchs during your stay in Morelia, this is the tour you should absolutely choose : - Rodrigo will pick you up early to make sure you’re the first one site to see the clusters. I saw that other visitors arrived too late to really see the clusters since the monarchs will disperse when the sun hits. - I could observe the clusters for an HOUR AND HALF! That’s so much more than the 20mn others visitors get. And the reason is you’ll be on site at 9am before everyone else show up. Sounds disturbs the monarchs, visitors are not allowed be too many (too loud) on the same spot + there’s not enough space anyways. - Spending so much time in total silence with the butterflies felt like a sacred experience and a privilege. - You will be escorted by the butterflies on your way back to the car. It means that you’ll get to experience both the quietness (on your way up and on site) + the liveliness of it all on your way back. - Rodrigo is the nicest, most helpful, passionate and knowledgeable guide. He even treats you with a lunch box to enjoy on your way back to your hotel. He was so nice to lend me his own binoculars and trekking pole. He really thinks about everything! He will provide you with fresh water from his cool bag. He also offered to keep the bottle of water I had on me in his cool bag for when we’d come back from the hike. I would definitely take his other tours next time I’m back in Morelia.
Did the butterfly tour with Rodrigo today and can't say enough on how amazing this tour was. It was not only the opportunity to be a of this amazing experience, but it extend to our tour guide, Rodrigo. He was so warm and weighing and welcoming. He put us at eaze the entire time. He is extremely knowledgeable in the butterflies and shared many insights about the butterflies and their habits. When we got to the viewing sight he has glad to answer and questions we had making the experience more meaningful. We left the sanctuary with a greater knowledge of these magnificent creatures. He's very intune with his clients needs to make then feel comfortable. He even played music from his play list that was familiar to our age. He is as professional as they get.
This is for two tours. Thanks to our exceptional guide Rodrigo! The is a private tour by an amazing, knowledgeable and compassionate guide. We had an amazing visit to the Monarch Sanctuary at El Rosario and a couple days later to Sierra Chincua. His knowledge of butterflies, and his great enthusiasm and love for them made this a truly magical experience of a lifetime. We were picked up directly at the hotel at 0630 in the morning to avoid crowds. The vehicle is modern and the drive was pleasant and informative on the way there and back. There is a reason for the early departure as we were one of the first ones to arrive at the Monarchs and we didn’t see one person until we were at the viewing area for a bit. Being early we could also see the early clusters and then the transition as the butterflies started to fly around in the sun almost like falling snow. Wear layered clothing as mornings are chilly and take water, binoculars and camera. Also hiking poles and good boots are a must. Be prepared for an aerobic workout to reach the monarchs. On this tour we were also required to be accompanied by a local guide named Sophia and she graciously stopped and explained the plants and Fauna - one was actually used to help curb some altitude queasiness, which does disappear as one gets acclimatized. Mature travelers just need to take things slowly and pace yourself. They do offer horse rides up to a certain point for a fee (not included in the tour price but with considering if you don't feel physically fit) Rodrigo doesn't ride the horses but will hike up and meet you at the drop off point. He supplies a packed lunch and water and great conversation for the return drive. This tour is well worth the investment and time, it is awe inspiring and we dare say spiritual! We wish continued success for Rodrigo - go on one of his tours and experience the wonders of nature. Larga vida a las mariposas monarca! And: Thanks again to our exceptional guide Rodrigo! The is a private tour by an amazing, knowledgeable and compassionate guide. We had an amazing visit to the Monarch Sanctuary Sierra Chincua and a couple days earlier to El Rosario. His knowledge of butterflies, and his great enthusiasm and love for them made this a truly magical experience of a lifetime on both occasions. Once again we were picked up directly at the hotel at 0630 in the morning to avoid crowds. The vehicle is modern and the drive was pleasant and informative on the way there and back. There is a reason for the early departure as we were one of the first ones to arrive at the Monarchs and we didn’t see one person until we were at the viewing area for a bit. Being early we could also see the early clusters and then the transition as the butterflies started to fly around in the sun almost like falling like snow. We personally liked this sanctuary a bit more as the hike was longer but more even and natural - there is one point where you see the same horizon that is on the back of the 100 peso note. I don't think I mentioned in the El Rosario post about the birds and especially the humming birds you hear and see at the sanctuaries - just amazing! We feel we were lucky both days with the weather and the sun coming out and the waves of monarchs coming off the clusters as the sun warmed them. Flying to eat nectar, drink from the streams and mate. The walk back was beautifully graced by the monarchs flying around you. Again wear layered clothing as mornings are chilly and take water, binoculars and camera. Also hiking poles and boots are a must. Be prepared for an aerobic workout to reach the monarchs. The forest and Fauna and meadows were spectacular on this tour and Rodrigo was able to guide us unlike El Rosario which required a local guide as well. Again mature travelers just need to take things slowly and pace yourself. They also offer horse rides up to a certain point for a fee (not included in the tour price but with considering if you don't feel physically fit) Rodrigo doesn't ride the horses but will hike up and meet you at the drop off point. He supplies a packed lunch and water and great conversation for the return drive. This tour is well worth the investment and time, it is awe inspiring and we dare say spiritual! It was nice seeing both sanctuaries as a comparison and also not knowing what the weather conditions might be, in our case both days were warm with sunshine - but you may get cloudy and cool conditions where the monarchs stay clustered and not fly. So if you can, do two tours, I also think Rodrigo just does the week days to avoid the weekends where it gets more crowded and not as nice viewing experience or as much time allowed with the monarchs. We wish continued success for Rodrigo - go on one (or two) of his monarch tours and experience the wonders of nature. Larga vida a las mariposas monarca!
Thanks to our exceptional guide Rodrigo from Yei Tours , my friend and I had an amazing visit to the Monarch Sanctuary at Sierra Chincua. His knowledge of butterflies, and his great enthusiasm and love for them, made this a truly magical experience. He ensured that we left early in the morning to avoid crowds. This was a blessing as we didn’t see one person until we were on our way back on the trail. Being early we could also see the early clusters and then the transition as the butterflies started to fly around in the sun. Wear layers of clothes as mornings are chilly. Be prepared to experience high altitude breathlessness, which does disappear as one gets acclimatized. Mature travellers ( like us!) just need to take things slowly.
My favorite part of the experience was seeing the multitude of butterflies leaving the trees, filling the sky and landing en masse on the flowers and plants nearby that were in direct sunlight. The walk up to the site was a little challenging for us (4 people 65-70 years of age) but our EXCELLENT and very knowledgeable guide - Rodrigo - stopped for several, short breaks during which he told us about the lives of the butterflies, their migration, the biosphere itself and the caretakers of the area. We left Morelia at 6:30am and because we were there before the onslaught of other tourists, we had a lengthy period of time to enjoy the experience with unobstructed views. The migration is truly a marvel of the insect world!
Rodrigo was great. He is very knowledgeable and his English is excellent. He sent plenty of information ahead of the trip,so I knew what to expect and how to dress. It was well worth leaving early, so that we could be the first ones at Sierra Chincua Reserve. We could watch the monarchs still clustered up and then starting to fly as it got warmer. We had plenty of time at the reserve. Rodrigo even had an extra pair of trekking poles that I could use. Leaving early also had the benefit that we got back early afternoon,so there was time to do more sightseeing in Morelia. Seeing all those monarchs is just such an incredible experience that you can't have anywhere else.
I would like to be able to rate our experience with Rodrigo from Yei Tours 10 out of 5. We did the Morelia City Tour and the Monarch Butterly Tour. Rodrigo was the best tour guide were lucky to have had as our guide for both tours. We have traveled all around the world and done many tours and he is now our #1 guide... ever. Rodrigo of Yei Tours is knowledgable, passionate, polite, and he makes you feel like you are the most important person in his world for the duration of your tour. And oh... he books up fast so book your tour now! And don't forget to tip.
Like the other reviews we must say that it was truly a wonderful experience. Rodrigo was a joy to talk with and a wealth of information. Always nice to Have someone so passionate about his work as your guide!! I highly recommend to anyone to go and see this wonder of nature. Thanks again to Rodrigo for a fantastic day!!!
Rodrigo is an amazing person who has a deep love of all that he does. I took this tour with him and it will stay with me forever. I appreciated his extensive knowledge of the monarchs and also the quiet time that we spent on the mountain allowing these beautiful creatures to whirl around us. Rodrigo is an all around kind and pleasant person to be around, like a friend that you haven't seen in a while. I can't recommend this amazing experience with him strongly enough. Thank you so much, Rodrigo!
Knowing what I do now I think it is important to plan a sunny day. The altitude was a little challenging but I took advantage of the horse ride up the steepest hill. It was so great to be in the forest again. I would never have imagined the scene of the number of clusters of the butterflies there. Rodrigo was a wonderful tour guide, very knowledgeable not just about the Sanctuary but of the area of Morelia and the state of Michuacan in general. There are food vendors at the Sanctuary where you can purchase a warm bite and a drink for a reasonable price should you wish to. The trail is dusty and the kids are eager to help you clean off your shoes after the hike up and back. I couldn't be happier that I made this trip.
The trip was amazing! Rodrigo was very friendly and informative. We were so happy that he got us to the reserve early so we had more time to observe the butterflies. We had great weather so the butterflies were active. Rodrigo took us to a small town to enjoy some local cuisine after the tour. I highly recommend taking your tour with Rodrigo at Yei Tours
I took Yei's Private Tour of the Monarch sanctuary several years ago, and it remains a once in a lifetime experience. Arriving by private vehicle before bus loads of tourists, you will travel a more expedient route, hike the trails with undisturbed ease, and hear the soft flutter of winged life as the sun warms the swarms and readies the butterflies for flight. This tour allows your guide to share insight and information with you in quiet real time conversation, undisturbing to the waking nature. And by the time you are ready to descend the mountain, the horses will be coming to meet you. This is an experience too special to be compromised if it is likely your first and last visit to the monarchs.
Rodrigo (Yei Tours) could not have been more friendly, knowledgeable or accommodating which only enhanced the magic of the mariposa experience. I must-do experience for those visiting the Michoacan area of Mexico.
My teenaged daughters and I took this private day tour end of February and it was amazing to see the monarchs! We had a great day with Rodrigo, and highly recommend booking with him- he was so nice, knowledgeable, and accommodating - we beat the crowds and had more time to stay viewing the monarchs than we would have had otherwise. We hope to return and would definitely book with Rodrigo at YEI tours if we do!
Highly recommend this tour with Rodrigo! He is so nice and knowledgeable. It is obvious he loves nature, history, and sharing this with knowledge and experience with others. We did 2 separate tours with Rodrigo, and wished we had also booked his Morelia city tour, but he was so gracious to give us information of where to go to get the most out of our quick 3 day trip to Morelia and surrounding area! Would definitely book with him again!
Our YEI tour to see the Monarch butterflies with Rodrigo was fantastic! Rodrigo has a passion for guiding and sharing the wonders of his beloved Mexico. He gave us a fabulous tour. We appreciated the early AM departure and good conversation on the drive. Rodrigo is knowledgable about the butterflies, their migration, and clearly enjoys sharing details and answering questions. Beyond the butterflies and while he wasn't with us as we toured the city of Morelia the next day, he spent a solid 30-45 minutes after the tour helping us orient ourselves and pointing out noteworthy sites of artistic, cultural, and architectural interest. Without his guidance, our city tour would not have been so rich. I can't wait to go back!
A once in a life time must do experience. The best way to realize the journey these little butterflies do annually is humbling and inspirational. I learned with Rodrigo so many important details about this miracle of the nature. Rodrigo has an obvious love for this region and a deep knowledge of flora and fauna. I will be back with my grandson. I want him to learn, enjoy and appreciate Mexico and it’s people and more important be witness of the Monarch’s incredible journey and all of these will be posible thank to Rodrigo an excellent guide with a perfect English.
This was my second Monarch tour and by far the best. Rodrigo was patient, knowledgeable and helpful in every aspect. It was wonderful to arrive early and to beat the crowd. We were able to see the transition of the monarchs from cold and sleepy to vibrant and flitting around us. if I was to do this again it would be with Rodrigo.
Rodrigo with YEI made the tour easy, fun, and informative. He speaks perfect English and was available for any and all questions. He adapted his pacing for us, and his lunch (and Spotify music program) was a plus. I most definitely will recommend him to my friends to travel to Morelia.
I had a really great time with Rodrigo at the Monarch Butterfly Reserve. He brought me very early in the morning to the reserve so we had time to enjoy the butterflies by ourselves before the other tourists appeared. In addition to being a great guide, he’s also an incredibly kind and patient person, and he speaks fantastic English. I would definitely recommend YEI for anyone interested in going to the Butterfly Reserve.
I booked this tour for my 30th birthday with my husband, and it was the best thing I’ve ever done. As an amateur monarch butterfly enthusiast, it was really amazing to see all the monarch butterflies practically dancing around you (like a Disney movie!!!) Rodrigo picked us up from our hotel in Morelia at around 6:30 AM, and we arrived at the Sierra Chincua Conservatory around 9:00 AM. From there, you hike about 30 to 40 minutes to see the observation point. It will require some physical excursion, so being somewhat healthy is a must. The time allotted to observe the monarchs depends on how busy it is. The more people there are, the less time there is for observation. For us, I think we were there for about 30 minutes. After observing the monarchs, we hiked back, ate our provided lunch, bought some souvenirs, and headed back to the hotel. I think we arrived between 3-4 pm. Make sure you wear layers. It is cold in the morning, but you will definitely warm up by the end of the hike. There are a lot of uphill/downhill portions. The cost of the booking includes everything: gas, tolls, park entrance fee, and lunch. The only thing we paid extra was souvenirs + tip. Rodrigo was super knowledgeable about the monarchs and was very eager to answer any questions we had. He also pointed out that the new version of the $100 MXN peso bill has an image of some mountains in Sierra Chincua, which are visible on the trail up! All in all, I was very satisfied with his service. I encourage any and all tourists to book with Yei Tours if you are interested in visiting the sanctuary. Thank you, Rodrigo!
A once in a lifetime must do experience. This area of the Michoacán forest and mountains is stunning. To fully realize the journey these little monarchs do annually is humbling. Rodrigo was careful to explain the four generations of butterflies that complete this cycle, while emphasizing our environmental connection to their survival along the way. Rodrigo has an obvious love for this region and a deep knowledge of flora and fauna. Throughout our day with him, we were delighted with his historical knowledge as well. We learned of the ancient civilizations that inhabited the area, and got great details on the colonial period, all given to us in an interesting and fact filled way in superb English. Thanks to Rodrigo, we will be back to Morelia, and definitely book a city tour with him. We cannot recommend this young man enough.
Rodrigo is and excellent guide. He is a pleasure to listen too with a huge knowledge of the area. He was on time and attentive throughout the day. The Monarch butterflies are astonishing! Thanks, Rodrigo Wish we were here longer and Rodrigo wasn't so busy!
Rodrigo is a wonderful guide. He knows so much information about the butterflies and the region. Super nice guy. You will enjoy your day with him!
Our guide Rodrigo picked us up at our hotel in Morelia at 6:30 and this is much earlier than most tours leave so we were the first to arrive there and had the place virtually to ourselves for the first 45 minutes we watched the pods of butterflies coming alive. As we hiked back we saw lots of people coming and were so grateful to have that quiet time with the butterflies in their natural habitat. Rodrigo explained the background and research that has been done about this phenomenon and was full of conversation about Mexico and Michaocán on the drive to and from the sanctuary. We are so happy to have chosen a personal tour and had this experience as part of our time in Morelia. Truly magical!
We booked 2 tours with Rodrigo and really enjoyed our days with Yei Tours. Arrived on a Sunday and were able to get the city tour the next day which was great so we were able to start our vacation in Morelia with some knowledge of the city. Our 2nd tour was to Sierra Chincua to see the Monarch Butterflies. This was a fantastic day and we loved having this experience. We liked that with Yei tours, they get an early start out to the butterfly reserves because by the time we were leaving, it was getting very crowded!! Rodrigo also gave us many restaurant recommendations that turned out to be great places to dine. Don’t hesitate to contact Yei Tours if traveling to Morelia, yiu won’t be disappointed :)
Our tour with Rodrigo was amazing. He took us to the butterfly reserve early so we avoided the mass of tourists who come later. He speaks fluent English and is a very friendly guy. On the way back he even recommended us places to eat for dinner in Morelia. I recommend this tour and company to everyone and hope to do another tour with him in the future.
As a couple of Canadians with limited spanish, we were so very lucky to get in touch with Rodrigo at Yei Tours. He is a very friendly and knowledgeable certified guide from Morelia, with perfect English. He picked us up early in his clean and safe car, then we drove about 2.5hrs to Sierra Chincua sanctuary. Because of the early departure, we were the first ones to arrive at the sanctuary and we got to watch the millions of butterflies explode with life once the sun hit the clusters. For about 40 minutes we had the place to ourselves, and then quickly we saw the crowds coming up the hills. By the time we left, there must have been about 50 people there and more coming up the hill! The reason you should go with Yei tours is because of the personal attention, the excellent knowledge of the butterflies (and SO much more) and because he seems like the only guide from Morelia that departs so early. We enjoyed Rodrigo so much that we booked a Morelia City tour the next day. I 100% recommend Yei Tours, you will not be disappointed!
This was an incredible experience. It's very important to pick a tour--like this one--where you arrive early. We left Morelia at 6:30 a.m. so were at the butterfly reserve by 9-ish. This was key because we were able to get up and see the butterflies before hordes of people arrived. People who arrived later had a very different experience than we did--not nearly as good. We had an amazing experience seeing the butterflies wake up and fly by the hundreds of thousands. Rodrigo is a delightful conversationalist and knows so much about butterflies and Mexico. Do not miss this tour!
