Itinerary
Our tour starts in Sarandi pedestrian street. In this first instance, we will begin sharing fun facts about Uruguay, and start getting to know 'Ciudad Vieja/ Old city' neighborhood, which used to originally be an enclosed citadel constructed by the Spanish people to resist military attacks from the Portuguese. We also highlight points of interest such as 'Museo del Carnaval' and 'Mercado del Puerto'.
Built in honor of the founder of the city, Zabala's square is a beautiful green area located in front of the 'Taranco Palace' (museum of decorative arts) where we will learn more about the origins of Montevideo and the colonial footprint that still shows itself nowadays.
This square used to be the center of everyday life in the 1800s. With its recognizable Spanish style, we will visit the cathedral of San Felipe y Santiago, the Cabildo museum (which used to be the administrative and justice headquarters back in the day), and enjoy the handcrafts fair that draws the attention of many tourists with its antiques and traditional Uruguayan items.
Plaza Independencia is the most important square of Uruguay's capital. It marks the limit between the historic neighborhood and the downtown area of the city. With many relevant buildings to highlight and visit, this square bears the remains of our biggest patriotic figure - José Gervasio Artigas - in its underground mausoleum, as well as showcases the emblematic 'Gate of the Citadel' monument, which makes it the perfect spot for postcard looking pictures and photographs.
While learning about Independance Square, we will also get dazzled by Solis' theater architecture, which is the oldest theather in latin america.
With its impeccable neoclassical architecture, this 100 year old building is where the chamber of senators and deputies pass and create new laws in the country. Nearby we can also make a stop at the Agricultural's Market, where we can buy some typical uruguayan snacks such as empanadas, alfajores or dulce de leche.
This 131 feet/ 40 meters high monument, really similar to the one in Buenos Aires, the Obelisc marks the beginning of the main avenue of Montevideo - 18 de julio.
At this point of our route, we will be able to appreciate the biggest green area of the city. Batlle Park was named after one of our most renowned presidents, and here we will see the velodrome (where carnival celebrations take place), as well as the 'Carreta/ Wagon' sculpture, symbol of Uruguay's agricultural lifestyle.
Declared by FIFA as the only monument of world football, this stadium hosted the first ever World Cup in 1930 where Uruguay became victorious and kept the cup home.
This is the 'must visit' part of our itinerary. The Montevideo sign has an unforgettable view of the coast, and here we will help you capture your stay with us by taking the best pictures to take home.
At this point of our tour, we will enjoy the shore breeze of De La Plata river, and drive by the longest promenade in the world. With 24km/15 miles of continuous coastline while headed east for our next stop, we will be able to see people sharing a traditional uruguayan 'Mate' (typical hot beverage), people jogging and families spending time together at the beach.
It is now time to try a traditional meal, with many restaurant options to choose from in the Arocena street, we suggest trying the famous 'Chivito', or the uruguayan asado; and the best place to do so is the Carrasco neighborhood, where we will pass by the most luxurious residences in the eastern side of Montevideo.
The cherry of the pie will be finishing this tour while getting the full picture of Montevideo from above. We will visit the city hall's view point, where you we will be able to recognize the spots we previously visited with informative brochures and binoculars.

My fiancé and I very much enjoyed the tour of Montevideo. We got to see some great sights as well as experience some of Uruguay's customs and traditions. Paola was a great guide and gave us some great advice and insight into the history and culture of Montevideo!
Santi was a fantastic guide- very informative and took us all around so we really got a good sample of Montevideo. He stopped when I wanted to take pictures and spent a lot of time with us. One of the best guides ever! So lucky it was a weekend because he only works then.
This tour was a great combination of walking and driving which allowed us to see as much as possible in 5 and a half hours. Paola was very informative and enthusiastic about her city and country. Her English was perfect. We even made a stop to sample mate, the local tea. There is truly no replacement for a personal guided tour from a local.
Before arriving in the city of Montevideo, we arranged a private tour for the four of us of the city. We couldn’t have been more delighted.Paola our guide and our driver Rodrigo were both delightful. The van was new and comfortable with plenty room for our walker. Paola was fun, kind, and deeply knowledgeable about Montevideo and Uruguay in general. We were taken to all the highlights of the city. We even got to see a mass in the cathedral led by the cardinal of Montevideo himself. Paola asked us the specific things that we were interested in seeing and arranged it all accordingly and beautifully. She took us out to a wonderful lunch at a restaurant dating back to the 1880s, a panoramic view of the city from atop city hall, and so many other wonderful sites. Being from Punta del Este , she also gave us recommendations for sites and dining there. That was our next stop. I cannot recommend this tour and the staff highly enough. If you want something that is personalized, personable, and just plain fun. This is the tour for you.
Wonderful private tour with Santiago who was very well versed on his country and the city of Montevideo. His English was very good and easy to communicate with. His car was spacious and had good AC. Highly recommend this tour and Santiago. Ed & Laura
Our group of four enjoyed a wonderful 3+ hours city tour of Montevideo with the absolutely amazing Paola! Our visit to this fantastic city was made even more special due to Paola, who not only has an extraordinary command of the English language, but is hugely knowledgeable, entertaining and able to answer questions on any subject. She made our visit very special and we would recommend her wholeheartedly!
We started our tour leaving Celebrity Equinox at the port and We always try to tour in small groups. We had 6 of us this day. We found Paola waiting for us just outside the port gates. Paola is a warm, smart multi-lingual guide. She has one goal, to make our day great. She prepared a comprehensive tour of the city with a combination of walking and driving in an air conditioned van piloted by Pablo who was terrific. We spent several hours touring and later we were able to see where we’d gone from the rooftop tower of city hall. We finished the day with a walk through the port market where we had a very nice lunch and then walked across the street to the port gates. Please ask for Paola for your guide with Urban Tours. We thoroughly enjoyed our day.
We had an excellent private tour with Favio. He was incredibly knowledgeable, helpful, and genuinely passionate about Montevideo. Nothing was too much trouble — he was flexible, obliging, and made the whole experience feel personal and relaxed. We learned so much about the city’s history and culture, and his insights added real depth to every stop. A fantastic guide and a brilliant tour.
Javier was excellent. Very knowledgeable about the History of Uruguay. His English was very good. He was very considerate of our limited walking ability. He even took us a special area that we wanted to see.
Perfect tour, very detailed explanation of Uruguay history , also the suggestions and friendliness of the guide, everything was perfect
We had a wonderful day with Paola in montevideo, I would highly recommend this tour. Thanks also to our driver, sorry I forgot his name.
We had a brilliant day discovering Montevideo with Paulo our guide. She shared her love of her country and city with enthusiasm. We learnt so much and were able to go at our own pace. We had sent our interests to Paulo in advance and she ensured that they were all met. I would highly recommend this tour.
Paola and Francisco many thanks for the lovely daytour. Highly recommendable. Thanks to Paola for all the information about Uruguay and Frsncisco for driving us.
My family and I only had one full day in Montevideo for sightseeing, and we wanted a private tour. Paola was our guide, Alvaro was our driver. Not only did we learn a lot, but we had a good time, even my teenager. I highly recommend booking this tour with this company.
Our tour guide was Santiago and he did a great job on our tour! We really enjoyed learning about this beautiful city and country. He is very knowledgeable and was very accommodating for us. And because it's a private tour, we were able to change things around to avoid the passengers from the 2 other cruise ships in port! I highly recommend getting a private tour of Montevideo.
Paolo is the sweetest nicest young lady with a great passion for what she does and it shows. Nothing was too much trouble. My husband and I knew next to nothing about Uruguay and Montevideo but by the end of the day we knew heaps. It was a thoroughly enjoyable day. I highly recommend you spend a day with this lovely young lady.
This is a great tour if you are looking for a local that tailors the sites to your interests. Fabio was very attentive to our group and provided just the right amount of history along with a personal touch. I would highly recommend this tour if you want to see historic sites along with experiencing the way locals live. The only opportunity was the size of the vehicle if there are four people in your group it was a little tight. Thanks Fabio!
Paola was an incredible guide for my Montevideo tour! Her knowledge of the city's history, culture, and hidden spots was impressive. She brought the city's stories to life with her passion and enthusiasm. Her sense of humor had me laughing out loud, and I loved how she took us off the beaten path to explore some amazing local spots. Highly recommend Paola for anyone looking for an authentic and fun experience in Montevideo.she super experienced and patient
We very much enjoyed our tour with Paola and Santiago. Paola excellently led the tour and Santiago contributed very interesting commentary and historical information. They were very warm and friendly individuals, and it was interesting to hear their personal insights about living in Uruguay and Montevideo, along with the historical and cultural facts about the various locations we visited. We appreciated how willingly they customized our tour to show us locations we had not already visited and to introduce us to some “off-the-beaten-path” places. Of course, we also saw the main tourist attractions. We would highly recommend taking a private tour with them. The experience is wonderful and an excellent value for the price.
Our small group had such a wonderful time touring Montevideo with Paola!! She asked what types of things we were interested in, and we told her history, art, architecture and local contemporary culture. She really knows this city! We learned so much exploring neighborhoods, public art work, museums, and historic buildings. She is so easy to spend the day with, fun to talk with, and learn from. She could give lessons to other tour guides. An added bonus was our very comfortable van with plenty of room for everyone so we didn’t feel crowded. Paola is awesome, and I highly recommend her!!
My husband and I were very pleased with our tour of Montevideo with Paola. She was friendly, very knowledgeable about the history of Uruguay and contemporary life in Montevideo. Her command of the English language is excellent. After the tour she send me additional information on what's app. I highly recommend the tour.
Paola and Santiago are the best. I was hesitant at first because I've had private tours before when the host is reading from a script or doesn't know what he is talking about and just considers the tour a job. Not the case with these two. Their passion and knowledge and intelligence was refreshing and after a while I felt I was among friends. Paola never overwhelmed me with facts either and gave me just the right amount of information and history for me to understand the context of the places we visited. Did I mention flexibility? My tour was supposed to start in the morning but my flight didn't get in until 1pm and so Paola and Santiago modified the trip, picked me up at my chosen spot and still managed to show me all the significant places and spots plus a few I added on my own. Their list of recommendations of places to eat also was extensive and it left me wanting to extend my stay. I definitely will look up these two and their tours if I come back to Montevideo and I cannot recommend it enough to anyone wanting to have a fulfilling travel experience
Very good. Lovely couple. V gd English. I asked to have some free time to look at some shops and have lunch and that's what happened. My only minor criticism was there was too much info and detail. Might be better to let people ask if they want that degree of information. Paulo gave us some good recommendations for restaurants to visit etc.
My tour guide was very knowledgeable about the City and its history. My driver also was knowledgeable and answered my questions about the locations we visited. I highly recommend this tour!
Paola and Santi were fantastic guides. After booking they made immediate contact to find out our specific interests and tailored our tour to this without leaving out the history and evolution of Uraguay as an independent country. For wine lovers, the wine and cheese experience would be an excellent add on. Nothing was too much trouble for this fun friendly pair
My second time in Montevideo but this tour was great. Brought back lots of memories, went to new places and introduced me to more of the history of this wonderful city
Best two days I could hope to spend in Montevideo. Paola & Favio were not only great tour guides, but also awesome company. I had so much fun with them that I can’t recommend them enough! They made sure that I had a great time and I felt like I was with friends, and not someone I just met. If you’re going to Montevideo, especially for a short trip, Paola and Favio are the way to go!
What a wonderful day seeing the city and learning about the history of Uruguay and Montevideo! You don’t need to look at any other tours of the city because you can’t beat this one!
Excellent tour on Montevideo with Favio. He was so knowledgeable. We enjoyed our time with him and feel like we were able to experience the full experience of Montevideo! Highly recommend!
Favio and Ruben were excellent tour guides. Perfect in every way. They were prompt in arrival and had a vast array of knowledge about the history and places of interest in Montevideo. Favio is a fluent English speaker and, despite being very professional, made the tour feel like it was being given by a friend showing us around the city. I highly recommend adding on the Matte experience, to get a bonus cultural experience. My family and I had such a wonderful time that we don’t want to go home! Thank you Favio, Ruben and Paola!
We had an incredible tour with Paola. She asked questions early to identify our interests. On the day of our trip, she was informative, fun, and flexible to our needs. Highly recommend for any small groups interested in a tour that feels like a day with friends.
Personable & interactive local tour guides. Suggest to add historical, cultural, & social overviews of Uruguay to current status. Our expectations hardly matched what was experienced when compared to some fifty countries visited earlier.
We had a great time on our tour! Paolo and Favio were incredibly welcoming, knowledgeable and flexible. They love their city and country and it shows! We did the half day tour and got to see so much in the 6 hours or so of our tour. It really helped orient us to the city. Paola gave us many recommendations of things to check out for the rest of our time and took some fantastic pics of us. We also got to enjoy torta frita despite the sunny weather! It was a lovely time!
Paola was very knowledgeable and was accommodating . She really gave us so many facts and interesting stories, we came away feeling as if we learned so much about Uruguay. I highly recommend her, and her driver, Alvaro, was fabulous, too.
Paola was an amazing guide with a comprehensive knowledge of Montevideo and of Uruguay. She arrived early, changed the pace based on our needs, added color to every corner of the city, and folded in the history of the area. Magnificent! The driver was very kind and responsive. When we got hungry, he even had a hidden snack. Professionals! Book this.
What a wonderful day we had with Paola & Santi. We learned about the history, culture, politics, food and just about anything else we asked about. We saw so much in the limited time we had, but we never felt hurried. Which was a good thing, because it was an extremely warm day, and I needed breaks. Their English was exemplary. Not only could they speak it, but they understood it, so our questions were answered. I've never wanted to hug my tour guides at the end of the day, but I did. It was a great day!
I highly recommend visiting Montevideo with Paola and Favio. They are super pleasant, thorough, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic about their city. They took us all over. We had some personal places we wanted to see in Montevideo which don't appear in the tour books, and they made sure we got there too, which was very meaningful to us. At the end of the tour they recommended a great place for lunch. We had an excellent day, learned a lot, and developed an appreciation for this wonderful city and country.
My teenage daughter and I enjoyed a fabulous half-day tour of Montevideo with Paola and Favio. Their English is fabulous. I booked at the last minute -- on the ferry from Buenos Aires -- but they were willing to take us. We saw all of the sites, and learned about the history and culture of this great city. I highly recommend this tour.
Paola was fantastic, we had a great in-depth education on the evolution of the city with on site visuals of how the city was transformed from 18th century to present day. The tour was fun, interesting, customized based on our interests and was great value for the price. I highly recommend for those interested in learning about Uruguay overall and Montevideo.
Paola is one of the best tour guides I've ever had! She was so knowledgeable and proud of her country! Santi was also a great asset to the tour, driving us all over the city. Paola reached out to us via WhatsApp before our arrival with all the information we needed. She greeted us with a sign at the airport and everything was very smooth. They offered to stop by our hotel so we would be more comfortable after a long flight (which was unexpected and greatly appreciated) The whole day was planned perfectly with a combination of walking, driving and great history and story telling. I would not hesitate to recommend this tour to anyone and will pick them again when I return!
This was a great personalised tour with Paola & Santi, both local guides. They provided us with immersive information on Montevideo and Uruguay including its culture, politics, history, food, etc. They had great command over their English so nothing was lost in translation. They took us to all local highlights in a comfortable car and made it a memorable tour for us. We would highly recommend them and this tour!
Paola and Santi did and excellent job of introducing us to Montevideo. We got a great introduction to the culture, economy, and what it's like to live there. Very personable and attentive to our need
We had a wonderful day exploring the city. We had fun learning about the history and having the flexibility to go at our own pace. Our friendly guide and driver were able to tailor our experience to our interests and made it very enjoyable. Don’t hesitate booking this tour!
I took a Montevideo city tour with Santiago, a fantastic guide with flawless English! He was friendly, super knowledgeable, and totally professional! We went to all the iconic Montevideo sites, and he gave me in depth explanations about it all. He even gave me the flexibility to add things in as we went. I feel like I learned so much about the culture and history of the whole country. Thanks for a great tour, Santiago!!
The tour was very complete, very good information about the whole city and its monuments. The one with a private vehicle with air conditioning was really very helpful. Definitely recommend.
Great comprehensive tour with Paolo and Santiago. Both were very knowledgeable and very warm people. Do not hesitate to book with them.
Informative and engaging tour with personable and very helpful guides. Memorable experience, highly recommended.
This was an excellent tour! Our tour guide tailored the experience for us and we were able to see a lot in a short time. We felt like part of the family with our tour guide and driver team - it was such an absolute pleasure to be taken around and not have to worry about directions or parking. Our guide was knowledgeable and friendly- we enjoyed seeing the sights and learning about the culture and history. Don't miss this opportunity- it was an amazing tour!!!!
