Itinerary
Visit the place where you can find Uruguay’s delicious, where locals gather for grilled meats and seafood.
Visit the historic square where Uruguay declared its independence in 1825, surrounded by important government buildings.
Stand at the spot where Uruguay honors its national hero, Jose Artigas, with a mausoleum beneath his equestrian statue.
There are a few more stops along the way, but we’ll keep those as a surprise to make your experience even more special.
Walk through the square created in 1890 on the site of the former Spanish fortress, where a statue of Bruno Mauricio de Zabala stands at the center and the layout follows a geometric French-inspired design.
Stand in the city’s oldest public square, laid out in 1726, where a central fountain from 1871 supplied drinking water and where Montevideo’s first cathedral was built nearby.
Observe the executive headquarters inaugurated in 2009 next to Plaza Independencia, where the offices of the President of Uruguay and the Council of Ministers are located.
See the surviving gateway built in 1742 as part of the Spanish fortifications, which remained standing after the city walls were demolished in 1829 and now marks the entrance to the Old City.

We saw a good portion of the city. The tour was a lot of walking. More than I am anticipated. We were provided more information than we could retain. The route was thoughtful and limited backtracking. Our guide was very passionate about the city and was happy to share information.
Excellent short sweet introduction to Montevideo. Our guide Oscar was very considerate and explained a lot of local history. Also very cheerful and flexible about modifying the order of the your; after our taxi did not bring us to the correct meeting place.
I had a wonderful experience exploring Montevideo with Oscar! He was incredibly knowledgeable, friendly, and passionate about the city and its history. I especially appreciated was that the tour went beyond just the Old City, helping me to explore Montevideo and make my short time here unique. I learned so much throughout the experience, and Oscar made the tour especially enjoyable. I would highly recommend Oscar and this tour to anyone visiting Montevideo, especially those coming for just a day. It was absolutely worth it!

Oscar was amazing and so knowledgeable
Oscar was incrediblely knowledgeable and provided an amazing introduction into the city and its origins. 100% Recommended.
Oscar was a super guide! We were so fortunate being the only guests so when we told him that we had seen most of the old city, we headed downtown & had a wonderful tour of the architecture, historical events & the view from the top of city hall! Recommend this tour!
Fascinating insights to the history and architecture of this amazing city. Oscar is a wonderful guide … knowledgeable and articulate!
This tour should be your first when you get to Montevideo. Oscar was incredibly knowledgeable and personable. I felt his genuine love for the city and Uruguay. 5++++ stars!!
Absolutely loved this tour! Oscar was extremely friendly and a great tour guide, he was able to make the entire tour very interesting and convey his love for Montevideo. I would 100% do this tour again and recommend it to anyone going to Montevideo!
This was a warm, friendly, informative - fabulous way to learn about Montevideo … yesterday I did the board brush Touriste bus…. Today felt like a personal guided tour-to my taste of this city: old and new. Thank you Oscar for your sharing and stories, you made this a very special memory.
Very good informative tour - Oscar was an excellent guide
Oscar was my guide and he was very informative and passionate about Uruguaian history. It was only me so I got a private tour. We walked through the old city and then walked down the big city avenue and up a tall govt building for a panoramic view. Not sure I’d call this tour “hidden gems”, but it was nice to see Montevideo in this quick tour. It was also Sunday so pretty much everything was closed and less to see so be aware if you book a weekend. This is something nice to do if you’re looking to fill some time or are short on time.
Great tour of the city by Oscar, who shared his passion for the city knowledgeably and with enthusiasm. We can highly recommend.
Oscar was a wonderful guide. He was very knowledgeable about Montevideo and its history. Highly recommend!
This was one of the best walking tours I’ve done. Oscar is an amazing guide, truly knowledgeable, having a genuine love for the city and its history. It didn’t feel like a conventional, commercial tourist tour at all, but rather like walking around the city with a very knowledgeable friend. The guide shared interesting stories, local insights, and recommendations in a very natural and engaging way. Highly recommended for anyone wanting a more authentic experience.
Our tour guy Oscar showed a genuine love for Montevideo. He demonstrated a great knowledge of the history and the architecture of the city, pointing out places of interest. His pace was good as we moved through the city. He was very professional and would highly recommend it.
I had 24 hours in Montevideo and wanted to find a way to learn about the city in my limited time. This is a great tour if you want a quick but still detailed way to learn about Montevideo and its history. The walking was also nice. Oscar was a great tour guide and very knowledgeable. Most importantly, he’s just a good person with a good heart. I would definitely recommend him and the tour.
Oscar my Cuban tour guide was especially knowlegeable of Montevideo and its history. We spoke in both English and Spanish. He has stories about Uruguay and his departure from Cuba and the authoritarian rule. I was impressed by his astute understanding of the culture.
A good little walking tour through the heart of the city by Oscar who was approachable and knowledgeable. I'm not sure we saw that many "hidden gems" but it was a nice way to see a bit more of the city.

Oscar’s love for Montevideo and its history really shines, and it was wonderful to appreciate the city through his eyes! He shared the perfect amount of history, culture, personal stories, and sights. The tour ended on a high note with great views of the entire city. Highly recommend this tour. Thank you for the wonderful morning, Oscar!
Oscar’s was very knowledgeable about the history and highlights of Montevideo, and it was a pleasure to see and learn about the city with him!
Oscar was super friendly and knowledgeable, and the tour was a great experience for me. The only slightly thing I disliked was a little pushiness on the tips, which is partly my fault since I didn't have physical cash before the tour.
Just our group of four with the guide Oscar, what a lovely and interesting man, very knowledgable. He tailored our tour to our request for lighter detail, but was obviously vey knowledgable on the history of Montevideo
We had such a wonderful experience with a very caring and knowledgeable guide! He was very dedicated to providing a personalized and meaningful experience for us.
I really enjoyed the tour, a great introduction to Montevideo. Oscar was the best guide, he is so lovely and knowledgeable. His love for the city is infectious. I highly recommend this tour.
What an extraordinary adventure. It was not only just a walkthrough of a major artery of old Montevideo, but a fantastic history lesson of politics, war, and the modern development and infrastructure of the city. This was very informative and the views were breathtaking.
It was quite an experience to walk the city with Oscar. To be quite honest, I would have walked past a lot of the sites be pointed out. The city is so full of history and I loved how he narrated it from his experience. If you are a history connoisseur, take the walk with him when you visit the city.
I learned quite a bit of history about the city. It has a very rich history that would have been hidden if not explored by people like Oscar who dear to research and share. How intriguing!
Oscar was an outstanding guide who offered truly unique perspectives, not only on the history of Montevideo, but on the passions of its people many of which he shared. Oscar answered all my questions and delivered insights that enhanced the rest of my trip. I love doing these tours at the beginning of my visit to a new city to help build a framework for the rest of the trip and Oscar built it beautifully. I now have plans for the rest of my trip here All thanks to Oscar’s insights.
