Really enjoyed this city tour of Montevideo. We were on a cruise and it was very convenient to meet the Yellow Penguin tour guide at the port. Tour guide was very nice and knowledgeable and took his time with our slow walkers. Very enjoyable experience and just what we expected on a one day tour to Montevideo. Highly recommend.

Itinerary
Welcome to Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay! We’ll be waiting for you at the meeting point in the Port of Montevideo to start the tour of Ciudad Vieja. Our first stop is Plaza Constitución, where we'll visit the historic Montevideo Cathedral. Stroll with us through this charming square, surrounded by antiques and pieces of Uruguayan history.
Then, we will get back on the minivan for a brief 3-minute drive to Plaza Independencia. Alongside the guide, you will learn about iconic buildings such as the Salvo Palace, the Executive Tower, the City Gate, the Solís Theatre, and the Estevez Palace.
Continuing our tour, we’ll travel through 18 de Julio Avenue and Libertador Avenue until we reach the Legislative Palace. We’ll stop for photos and admire this stunning Neoclassical building from the early 20th century.
Just 500 meters away, we’ll visit the renowned MAM, a charming market and shopping area, part of Uruguay's Historical Heritage. Here, you can taste typical Uruguayan cuisine, craft beers, and local products like leather and cashmere garments.
Continuing our city tour, we’ll head to the Battlle Park neighborhood, known for its embassies amid expansive lush gardens. Here, we’ll visit the Monumento a La Carreta, an impressive bronze carriage monument.
Just a short distance away, we’ll visit the historic Estadio Centenario,a world football monument where the first FIFA World Cup was held in 1930. It’s a must-see for football fans to take photos at the entrance of the official box, next to the sign commemorating this iconic sporting event.
In just 10 minutes, we’ll arrive at the picturesque Pocitos neighborhood, one of Montevideo’s most beautiful areas. Take memorable photos with the famous Montevideo sign, set against the backdrop of the Rambla and the stunning beach on the edge of the Rio.
We continue with a 16-km drive along the Rambla, passing through Pocitos, Punta Carretas, and Parque Rodó. The guide will point out Parlasur (Mercosur headquarters), the U.S. embassy, and other notable monuments and buildings.
Finally, we’ll return to the Port of Montevideo. For those who wish to continue exploring, you can choose to finish just 50 meters from our meeting point, where you’ll find the Mercado del Puerto. You can enjoy a traditional Uruguayan barbecue on this delightful gastronomic and historic spot.

It was a nice adventure. Rather interesting to learn and see how the people live. Some of the homes were interesting. I wondered about the piers/docks and the security of them. I wish we had longer for shopping and tasting the food. All and all a great adventure.
Herman was a great guide providing lots of information and answering all of our crazy questions. He’s personable, relatable and knows his city. His driver was very nice too. Would recommend this tour.
We had an amazing time and our tour guide Jamie was the best! We were fortunate to have an in home Asado experience included with our tour and if offered I highly recommend you do it. Great food and wine and the warmest hospitality. I can’t recommend Yellow Penguin enough. We booked all of our excursions with them and never had any issues and if you are on a cruise, you will get back on time. They guarantee it.
Excellent tour provided by a very knowledgeable and enthusiastic guide. He gave historical information on the city and Uruguay as well as information on local food and drink
We got to see several of the key spots in Montevideo during the tour. Our guide Fernando was very friendly and helpful. He provided many interesting facts as part of the tour.
Fabulous insight into Montevideo. What a great city . We loved the ramblas area the best. Would recommend our guide.
Nice tour of the city. Just the right amount of time to cover the area. Our Guide Fernando was excellent. Well informed and easy to understand English speaker. Very professional.
Very interesting tour. Our guide Fernando was excellent his knowledge about the history of the city was superb. Lovely air conditioned coach.
I was disappointed in the whole of montevideo i was expecting more i think .This wasn't a reflection on our tour guide who was great i just don't think it was interesting enough for him to do any better both him and the driver were lovely. I've spoken to my fellow travellers who have done alternative tours operators who say the same so font let this put you off booking
We thought this 4 hour tour was good value at A$120.90 for the two of us. At the end of the dock was a gentleman with a "Yellow Penguin' sign who directed us to our bus and our excellent guide, Martin. The comfortable bus was equipped with a toilet, A/C and a good microphone system. We were provided with a bottle of water each and Martin gave us a chocolate delicacy at the end of the tour. All advertised aspects of the tour were covered at a good pace. Plenty of time to visit the Artigas mausoleum in Plaza Independencia and the Montevideo Cathedral was well worth the visit. We engaged 'Yellow Penguin' three times during our cruise and from our experience they are a very professional organisation. Thank you to Martin and 'Yellow Penguin' for showing us the highlights of Montevideo in the short time we had available.
We arrived on a cruise ship and had to find our way to the meeting point. Easy peasy! The directions were clear and the destination was well marked. What an informative tour of a beautiful city. We learned about the country and saw the city. Would definitely recommend this tour to anyone!
This tour gives you a great in depth history of not only Montevideo but Uruquay from the past to present. Excellently delivered by John-Paul of Yellow Penguin
Montevideo city tour was very good. We saw the highlights and Carolina gave us a wonderful commentary throughout our visit. Highly recommend.
Great time with our guide Juan Pablo, it was one of the best tours that I’ve done. A really good mix of culture, history and architecture with a great sense of humor
Our guide, Juan, gave a very good picture of Uraguay and in particular, of course, Montevidao. Not just the history of the many places we visited, but also the history and current status of Uraguay, a country of which our guide was very proud.
Good value for the money. Tour guide was excellent and very knowledgeable. Visited sites around city which would not have been possible by foot. Would recommend this tour
Carolina was an excellent guide who gave us a great overview of the history and key sights in Montevideo. I could not have asked for a better introduction to this beautiful city.
We had an amazing day with John Paul (JP), he loves his city and I would recommend this tour for anyone. So may highlights to see and I think we saw them all. Had lunch after the tour at a place recommended by John Paul and it was wonderful.
Some walking involved along the streets. Guide was generous with free water, he also was very informative about history of Uruguay
Our guide was great. Forget his name but he was 19 turning 20 tomorrow. Great tour of Montevideo. Very knowledgeable and good personality.
Really enjoyed our tour of Montevideo. Our guide, German, was very knowledgeable and accommodating. I feel that I received a great introduction to the city as well as some historical information. This was a great tour.
This was a wonderful day seeing all the highlights of Montevideo. My favourite and most beautiful was Plaza de la A mada. The courier was so very informative about the history of the capital of Uruguay and it was very interesting. The weather was also great which added to the whole experience. I would definitely recommend 🌞⭐
The organisation and communication is excellent. The information to find the guide is full , detailed and very helpful. Our driver was excellent. Oscar, our guide was so informative, able to answer every question and delightful company. I strongly reommend this tour.
Excellent tour to hit all the tourist spots. We had a great time with the tour. One advice was to see the mausoleum in Independence Plaza during the free time there. It only took 5 minutes.
great highlights of the city and Juan was definitely knowledgeable and interesting storyteller especially going back to past history!!! Bus was very comfortable, grest driver and water very much appreciated!!
Martin was one of the best guides we ever had on any tour. Knowledgeable, great sense of humour and very friendly. Had little expectation and were rewarded by a great tour with a bonus of street performance near the old city gate. The tour was supposed to be between 3 to 4 hours, however Martin did not go by a stop watch and we had a generous 4 plus joir tour. Yellow Penguin owner Diego met us right by the port and gave us precise instruction on where and how to meet Martin our guide
Brilliant tour with Yellow Penguin. Met at cruise port exit, clear penguin sign! directed to a second penguin and the tour bus. Wifi onboard, water and tour guide with clear English.
The 3.5 hour tour was excellent. Our guide, Juan Nikolai, provided us with the history of the country and the city in an easy to understand manner. The tour had 22 people in a small bus — that provided comfort and ease of travel. Well worth the time and cost.
A mini-bus picked us from outside the port. Our lovely guide Martin showed us the the old and the new area of this calm City and was very informative and quite humourous. Great tour.
Our tour guide, Juan, was extremely pleasant and highly knowledgeable. He was entertaining, enthusiastic and brought Montevideo to life. We booked this tour very last minute and it was well worth it.

We felt like we saw a lot of the city. Martin was very friendly and professional. He provided time at each stop for exploring and pictures. And he spoke great English!
Very interesting tour. Small bus that was very comfortable (lots of leg room) and Caroline is a very good tour guide. Learned a lot about the city and country.
Juan was the reason this tour was fabulous. He was above all, knowledgeable and communicated clearly. His English was excellent. Juan was friendly, efficient and entertaining. We saw important sights and he gave us valuable tips about what condo on our own.
Juan was very knowledgable about all the political, architectural, social and food topics on the tour. He was great with everyone in the group. When we were walking, we moved at a good pace, but we were not rushed. Since we had extra time in port after the tour, he gave great recommendations about what to do with our remaining time in Montevideo.
Excellent Tour in Montevideo! Wonderful and charming overview of the city, both old and new. Our guide couldn't have been better. Highly recommend!
Jaun was a very informative guide, with great knowledge of the city , very cheerful and helpful.we really enjoyed our time in Montivideo, and would recommend this tour.
Yellow Penguin delivered a great city tour from our cruise ship. Martine was an excellent guide and explained things well. A good introduction to a very pleasant city.
Good intro to city and the history of the country Very informative with excellent guide would recommend
Martin was our guide for the day and he was informative and funny. The port was very crowded with 3 cruise ships in port and there was some confusion in connecting. Once the tour began and Martin introduced us to his city the trouble getting started was forgotten. It is great he is a fellow traveler and shares his passion.
Great way to see some of the highlights of Montevideo. Martin was great with answers, history and keeping it interesting and fun. Gabriel (the drive) did a great job getting us around town.
Our first experience using Viator. Booking was easy and our guide was excellent. Great value and we will use again.
Guide was well informed and gave commentary about all aspects of the city and country. The bus was comfortable enough and the seats were roomy. It was easy to follow the directions to meeting point just outside of the pier. Guide gave recommendations for where to go after the tour ended. Didn’t feel rushed at any of the stops.
Great overview of the city by Martin. He was very knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. Also gave some recommendations.
