Our tour guide was awesome, friendly and knowledgeable about the operation and products. I's nice to get out of the city and see some land and a nice view.

Itinerary
At the gates of the city of Modena stands Acetaia Marchi, a family-run business focused on producing Balsamic Vinegar. It was 1910 when the ancestors of the Marchi family began keeping barrels of Black Gold in their attic: even back then, such a precious product was universally considered to be of great value. In the vineyards, only native grape varieties are grown, deeply rooted in the traditions of the Modena and Reggio Emilia provinces. Surrounding the estate, you will find rows of both white grapes and red grapes. The grapes are harvested, gently pressed, and then the must obtained is cooked in open-air boilers. The tour continues by guiding guests through one of the aging rooms for Balsamic Vinegar of Modena IGP. The most widely known of Balsamic Vinegars is made from two ingredients: cooked must and wine vinegar, which are skillfully blended and then aged in wooden barrels. Balsamic Vinegars must age for at least 12 or even 25 years. The tasting includes a wide variety of products from the company’s catalog: in addition to highlighting the taste differences, this phase also delves into explaining possible culinary pairings in great detail.

Wonderful tour of the Marchi estate. Guide was very well prepared and did an excellent job.
We had a really lovely visit to this small, family-run balsamic vinegar producer. Aurora was wonderful—very friendly and informative, and she explained the whole process so well. I honestly never imagined that making balsamic vinegar was so work-intensive! The tasting was really good and very generous, which made the visit even better. It’s also easy to get there, about a 12-minute taxi ride from the train station (around €12–15). A great experience, especially if you’re a foodie or just curious to see how traditional balsamic vinegar is made. Definitely worth a visit!
Lots of interesting information. Tasting was fun. Aurora the Tour guide from the site was very knowledgeable.
We are so glad we took this tour. We learned so many things during our tour and tasting. This is a family run operation and you can tell that they truly care about their product. Aurora was knowledgeable and engaging. We now know more about the different balsamic vinegars and can’t wait to get home to share that knowledge with the rest of the family.
The tour and tasting was interesting and tasty. Since we arrived to Modena by train and took a taxi to the site, we arrived early. As we strolled through the grounds, we were delighted to be able to watch some harvesting of grapes. One of the staff explained the process, the different kinds of grapes and why they chose those particular grapes. This was an added, unexpected delight.
Had such a great time at Acetaia Marchi! My guide was fun, passionate, and clearly knew everything there was to know about balsamic vinegar. The tour through the aging rooms was fascinating. I had no idea how much time and tradition goes into every bottle. And then the tasting... wow. The balsamic itself is simply amazing, left with a few bottles and zero regrets. Highly recommend if you're anywhere near Modena!
The tour was absolutely fantastic. The estate was beautiful, very well maintained, and impressive to see. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable, friendly, and explained everything very clearly. The whole experience was both fascinating and educational, and we learned a lot about traditional balsamic vinegar that we didn’t know before. The balsamic vinegar itself was also absolutely delicious. Overall, a very interesting and enjoyable experience that I would definitely recommend!
We arrived very early and the hosts were really friendly letting us sit inside and shelter from the heat. The tour itself was incredible value for money and very informative. The tasting itself was interesting and we left more knowledgeable and with a few bottles of balsamic vinegar.
Great visit, learned a lot about the process of making balsamico. Bery friendly and professional!
Really enjoyed this tour of a very nice family run Acetaia in Modena. The facility itself is impressive and the guide was very knowledgeable. I learned a lot and got to taste Balsamic Vinegars that I had previously only heard about. It was a great experience, and I highly recommend this tour.
When in Modena, this balsamic vinegar tour should not be missed! Located at a small production family farm on the outskirts of town, the setting is beautiful. The grounds and the buildings are immaculate. The guide was very professional and gave us an exceptional tour grounded in history as well as the science behind the making of the vinegar. The tasting was the highlight, working our way up to the oldest, richest sample in their stock. I highly recommend this tour when in Modena.
This is a small family vineyard and absolutely delightful. We had a lovely and informative tour with Aurora. She explained everything very clearly about the process of making the balsamic vinegar and was very fluent in English. We tasted all levels of the vinegar including the oldest and also were introduced to their other products, jams and honey which we also loved. We were the only couple booked that day so in essence had a private tour. I highly recommend this experience.
We really enjoyed the tour with Aurora. She did a very thorough and entertaining presentation of the process.
We had a lovely experience with Aurora giving us a tour of the farm and balsamic production. She was very knowledgeable and her English was excellent. She was friendly and interacted well with my 11 year old daughter. We were the only people there, which was a treat. We sampled all the products afterwards, but there was no pressure to buy. We did because their balsamic was very good. She even called us a taxi to return to the station. It is only 10 min outside of Modena. I would highly recommend.
What a fun and interesting tour! Aurora was very friendly and spent quite some time chatting with me when I got to the meeting place early. Then the tour itself was fascinating - it's a long and involved process to produce balsamic vinegar! The tour was just the right length - some time standing, but not too much, and a chance to sit during the tasting at the end. And, it was easy to get a taxi to and from the centre of town.
We were lucky enough to have Aurora lead us through the tour and tasting. Aurora is a very knowledgeable and poised young woman. She speaks English well and was able to easily explain the process of making balsamic vinegar and the different methods for aging the products. It was very interesting. The vineyard property is lovely. The tasting was comprehensive and extremely interesting. Definitely recommend this tour. Also, just to let people know-the vineyard is located about 12 minutes drive from the Modena train station. There were many taxis right outside the station. Important information for tourists arriving in Modena by train.
After reading Rick Steves' review on Acetaia Marche balsamic vinegar plant & tasting tour, my wife and I decided to give it a try.. Although I am not a "need to go on a vinegar tour" person, reservations were made online directly with the farm. Took taxi from Modena train starion to farm (€16). The farm operation was relocated there in 2015. However they still have older stock of vinegar from 1880's when the family was given a large starter vinegar barrel in 1905. The tour with our guide, Aurora, was remarkably rewarding. The history of and making of balsamic vinegar DOP and IGP making IS AS MUCH or even more complex than fine wine. While on tour in the attic aging room, we noticed two workers decanting and transferring the aging vinegar from barrel to barrel. Turns out the lady working was the wife of the owner of the farm. Additionally, later downstairs the tour happened to cross paths with the owner and husband of the lady working in the attic. It is truly amazing that the owners were doing daily "grind "work instead of sitting behind a desk in a nice comfortable office. One felt the whole operation was run with hard work from top to bottom with respect for, and a genuine love in making their product. Learning the laws and regulations that guide these producers is unbelievable. The knowledge imparted by Aurora was insightful. She explained the slight differences in the acidity, flavor, sweetness, & smoothness of the lines. Preferences were uniquely different among tasters and was not necessarily just price points. We appreciated the hospitality of Mr. & Mrs. Marche, and their crew- the dedication in producing a quality product line of which they can be proud. Rick Steves was right again. It was a gift of an experience. We send the next generation of Marche's good wishes to continue in this spirit so more people can visit and enjoy their wonderful hospitality and product.
This was honestly one of the highlights of my trip to Italy! I’m a huge foodie and always wondered how balsamic vinegar is made and how there seems to be taste difference—even with the stuff I buy in the US at a grocery store. My favorite was trying a 25 year aged balsamic vinegar with parmigiana cheese. There’s also a shop to buy souvenirs at the end. I would have bought more if my suitcase had the space!
Our tour guide aurora was lovely and so informative about the process. She gave us a great dinner recommendation as well! The balsamic is so delicious and unlike what we have ever tried, truly black gold
Brilliant tour, the lady who took us around was fantastic, told us so much and answered every question that was asked. The tasting at the end was everyone's favourite part. Highly recommended
We enjoyed learning about the different types of product. Our guide, Marta, was delightful. We had a great time sampling the various balsamic vinegars
Our guide, Marta, was great. We had a small group of English speakers and we asked all kinds of questions. The tour was compact and we learned a lot which will help us buy balsamic in the future. An amazing story with a great tasting experience at the end. We bought some of the DOP and learned some great new ways of appreciating it. Well worth the trip from Bologna.
Good tour and explanation, definitely worth doing and learned a lot.
A very warm welcome and a very interesting visit. A must-do👌
Very good explanations in our language
We really enjoyed our tour and tasting at Acetaia Marchi. There were only two couples of us. The guide explained the balsamic vinegar process very well in French. We are tasting several products. They are excellent. We can buy some on-site, which is recommended because there is very, very little exportation. The prices are very affordable. There will be a restaurant starting next year to pair dishes with the different products. The building is currently under construction right next to the parent company.
A big thank you to Aurora for the tour, the very interesting explanations, and not forgetting her pleasant service. Thanks a million
Exceptional guide, High entrance fee considering the purchases often made after the visit.....
Nice visit and welcome, in French, the guide was friendly and took the time to answer all our questions, good tasting
Very good explanation of how to make vinegar in French. It was very rich and we tasted very good Balsamic vinegar
