With towering dunes, endless beaches, wilderness islands and miles of trail to explore, Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is definitely the main feature along the M-22 Scenic Drive.
One thing you won’t want to miss is the Dune Climb. It’s the most popular thing to do in Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, and involves climbing a series of sand dunes with fantastic views of Lake Michigan in the distance.
A mini-drive within the main drive, the Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive was once nominated for the Most Beautiful Place in America series. This slow but extremely beautiful 7-mile loop drive is not to be missed, taking in viewpoints, dunes, a covered bridge, changing forests - including a ghost forest - and even the Sleeping Bear itself
Northwest Michigan is a hotspot for birders, and the Arcadia Marsh Nature Preserve is one of the best spots along this route to view rare and endangered species. The Arcadia Marsh is one of Lake Michigan’s few remaining coastal marshes, and visitors can access the marsh through a boardwalk trail that leads straight through the heart of the preserve.
This roadside viewpoint offers one of the most scenic views of Lake Michigan. This is one of the highest points along Lake Michigan so it offers one of the tallest views around. Climb the 120 steps to the top lookout platform for an even more dramatic view.
With its sandy rich soil and cool climate, the Leelanau Peninsula is an ideal spot for growing grapes. Visitors will find 25+ vineyards scattered throughout the peninsula specializing in riesling and ice wine, a sweet dessert wine unique to this region.
This picturesque coastal town is the best place in northwest Michigan to get acquainted with old-time fishing life. Visit the historic town to see preserved shanties along the shore, and be sure to leave room for some locally caught smoked fish or a fried fish sandwich.
The Point Betsie Lighthouse marks the southern entrance of the Manitou Passage, one of the Great Lakes' most treacherous stretches of water. It’s one of the most photographed lighthouses in Michigan and guided tours are available of the 19th century keeper’s residence and 34-step tower.
Traverse City has long been known as the “Cherry Capital of the World”. In July and August, the countryside surrounding Traverse City is filled with fruit stands and markets brimming with baskets of sweet, dark cherries. All things cherry are celebrated in the annual National Cherry Festival held in Traverse City each July.

Made the experience of traveling on m22 in Michigan is like having a wonderful guide in your car. Daniel
Highly recommend buying this! Was so helpful and learned alot.
Absolutely turned a normal ride into an enjoyable, entertaining and informative trip. We stopped at several places we never would have even known about.
I absolutely loved the GuideAlong GPS Guided Tour of M-22 Lakeshore! It made my drive so much more enjoyable. The narrator was hilarious, engaging, and incredibly informative, sharing fascinating stories and interesting facts along the way. It truly felt like I had a knowledgeable local right there with us! I especially loved that he didn’t just stick to the main route—he gave me great suggestions for places to explore and things to see along the way, which made the adventure even more memorable. If you’re planning to drive M-22, I highly recommend GuideAlong! It’s the perfect companion for the trip and added so much to our experience. I loved every minute of it!
The tour took off right away without any prompting and stayed with us the whole route. Well worth the money!
Fun experience once we figured out where to start.
Nice tour. Gave us information about the area.
Tour was helpful and informative. Had a difficult time getting it started. Glad we had it not being from the area.
Narrator felt like a friend in the back seat.
Jack (the name I gave him), was a great companion on my solo road trip! Even made me chuckle a few times. Appreciated all the history and local commentary. Will definitely do this again!
it was confusing about how to get started on the route, but after we got started, it was a lot of fun and very interesting and worthwhile.
We enjoyed the self guided tour. We found the information to be informative and relevant. The suggestions were excellent!
We found the guide to very informative. The narrator blended history of the region and points of interest along the way. He emphasized those stops that were well worth our time. We appreciated this approach since we only had one day's travel through the region.
It was fun entertaining and educational. The little anecdotes made the trip much more enjoyable. And the timing of the details was perfect.
Great commentary and took the guest work out of where to stay and where to look and what to do. It was a great experience. Thank you for recommending
Best self guided ever!! We didn’t miss anything. So many details - history and science regarding the area! Hikes with distance, difficulty and special features explained. Great humor included
The app works very well. Perfectly synced with my location at all times. The narration was easy to listen to, very informative, and provided great recommendations as to where to stop, what to see, where to grab something to eat. Well worth the cost!
It was one of the best tours ever! Reminded me of our trip to Maui—the Road to Hana felt so similar. Highly recommend it, totally worth every penny!
Great!!!! Highly recommended! Beautiful scenery. Great highlights. Pierce Stocking drive is a must! Plan for 2 days.
This app is great! The “tour” talks throughout the drive highlighting attractions, recommended stops, and interesting history. The app uses your location to explain what you are seeing “live”. When we stopped, the tour paused until our car was moving again. Highly recommend!
My friend and I planned to drive the M22 for a fall colors tour. I decided to upload this guide. Figured it was $20...so worth the risk. We started in Manistee and ended in Traverse City. The guide, we called him Glen, follows you as you drive and gives you highlights of where to stop and gives the history of the area you're in. If you like hiking, there are suggestions along the tour as well. The whole trip took us a little over 9 hours with stops. It got a little confusing around Sleeping Bear. He gives details ahead of time, but we thought they were current stops. I would recommend this tour to help enjoy your M22 trip!
It was interesting and informative. We ended up seeing things we might have missed without the guide. Were able to use it on multiple days!
Learning new things about our beautiful state was immensely enjoyable! I would never have known about Old Facefull or the story of how the Sleeping Bear Dunes and Manitoba islands got their names. We plan to do the trip again next summer!
It was so helpful to have the description and background of the areas we were driving through. He also injected comedy in his dialogue along the way.
Just took half of the M22 Michigan tour. Gave up on it because of the music was too loud and the voice too low. Had to change the volume at each location. Very frustrating and amateur. Don’t sell it to anyone until you fix it.
Excellent resource. Seamless GPS-driven commentary. Fun side stories about the area. Points out sites and stops we would certainly have missed if we just followed a map. Quite cheap self-guided tour vs some exorbitant guided ones . Can’t wait to explore more on future road trips !
Unfortunately, while I was able to download the tour from Viator, I was not able to listen on the app for listening. Why? You are supposed to use the same log in for Viator as for the listening app. I used a one time password offered by Viator to log into Viator and therefore I could not match it to my Apple ID or Google is. So this purchase was useless.
This really added a lot to our vacation. It worked very well. It notifies you what is coming up ahead of you, tells you some of the history of the area, points out good places to stop, take pictures, or take hikes. It was a good value for the money.
We very much enjoyed hearing the history and highlights of the areas on this itinerary. The pace was great and I really loved that all of the technology worked as intended. Well done experience, can’t wait to find another tour for future adventures!
This was a great way to explore the Leelanau peninsula. I appreciated the suggestions of things to do and a gauge of how long they would take. The narrator was entertaining and shared investing tidbits about the area.
It highlighted all the major spots to visit and then some. We got in a lot of hikes ! It also mentioned a specific award winning dairy we stopped at. Otherwise we’d have had no clue
