Our audio tour of the Keweenaw Peninsula was wonderful. Our guide did a really nice job of including lots of interesting facts and information! Very well done.

Itinerary
As the audio guides play commentary based on your gps location, you can create your own itinerary along the tour route to match your interests and schedule. Or you can use our trip planners for our suggestions on half, full or multi day itineraries. Some of the many highlights are listed below;
For a scenic drive high above the Copper Country, you'll head up Brockway Mountain. It’s the highest above-sea-level drive between the Allegheny and Rocky Mountain ranges, and the views (and birdwatching!) are stunning.
Copper Harbor represents the end of the road - or at least as far as there is to travel on the Keweenaw Peninsular. Home to just 150 permanent residents, it's a fine place to both play and relax, with access to great beaches and world class biking trails. Copper Harbor is also the launch point for the ferry to Isle Royale National Park.
As you make your way from beach to beach and bay to bay, you are constantly reminded that in it's angriest mood, Lake Superior's waters can be filled with peril and danger. Lighthouses were a literal beacon of safety for the mariners. The 150 year old octagonal lighthouse and museum at Eagle Harbor is quite a charming sight!
The Upper Peninsula has more than 300 waterfalls. You’ll stop at two on this trip, one of them being the pleasing Eagle River Falls. If you love chasing waterfalls, we'll have tips and suggestions for long and short hikes - it's a whole extra adventure.
If you can’t get to the west coast to see the giant sequoias, you’ll get to see the northern equivalent on a walking trail through the Estivant Pines. The grove has pines that are more than 300 years old and rise up more than 125 feet.
This extraordinarily well-preserved Army fort from 1844 is available to visit, and has local history re-enactors to guide you through. The Army built it to keep the peace between miners and the Indigenous people, but there were really never any problems to speak of. Admission to Fort Wilkins is free, however a Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry to Fort Wilkins State Park.
By area, Lake Superior is the largest freshwater lake in the entire world. The shore you’ll be driving along is gorgeous thanks to both beautiful volcanic rock formations and stunning expanses of sky and water. There are endless places where you can stop and get onto the shore to do some beachcombing, or go swimming on a warm summer's day.
The most visited experience was once called Old Reliable because of how continuously profitable the site was, Quincy Mine is one of the best preserved mines in the Copper Country. Don’t miss the underground tour and the only cogwheel tram operating in the Midwest.
This seasonal bakery sells boozy cakes and muffins as big as your head, plus other goodies. And it’s run by monks living in a beautiful monastery in the woods, surrounded by the local ingredients going into the treats at the bakery.

We enjoyed the audio tour for Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula, but having used Shaka Guides in the past, this experience was not quite on par. The tour worked well mechanically, and much of the information offered was useful and interesting, but I would have appreciated more in depth information and recommendations for hikes, waterfalls, and local options. That aspect of the product seemed limited. It was also a bit clunky because we had to use our Google Maps on CarPlay and have the Guide Along running on a phone. Again, Shaka has a technology that allows us to display the map directly to CarPlay. Also, as relevant as copper mining is to the history of the area, much more time could have been devoted to that topic. The importance of the Finnish language to the area could also be much more fleshed out. We would also have appreciated hearing more information about the indigenous peoples, and perhaps insights as to how the UP became part of Michigan rather than Wisconsin. Some of the pronunciations and local word usages were “off”. For example, we don’t call US Route 41 “the 41” as the narrator does. And Wild Bill Mattila would be pronounced MAT-tila in Finnish, rather than Mat-TILA. We also don’t refer to the area as “the yoop” as I heard at one point in the audio. These are small things, but they reduce the authenticity of the audio guide. Utilizing a local researcher and editor would be really helpful. Overall, the Shaka Guides I’m accustomed to seem more deeply researched and offer a higher production quality. This was fine, but given a choice for our next trip — to Sedona - we’ll choose Shaka.
Cool insight- great technology to provide upcoming sight information
The narration was informative, entertaining, and very accurate in terms of timing relative to where we were on the tour. Highly recommended.
We loved this tour! The guide was great and gave us tons of options of places to stop and check out. This was our first time trying a guided tour and we will definitely be doing it again!
The speaker was excellent and all of the information was perfect! Everything was right on key with our traveling. We highly recommend it.
The self driving tour was great! We went pre-season on a Monday so a lot of the businesses were closed though. But we still had fun!
We are so happy that we found this audio tour. It was great! We learned so much about the Keweenaw Peninsula. The fall colors were beautiful. We highly recommend this tour for anyone who is going to visit this area of Michigan. Will definitely be recommending this to friends.
Learned a lot. Great way to experience the area. Speaker had a great voice and stories. Easy to navigate. Easy to start and stop
Great experience. Explains the history of the different locations and easy to use. My family was impressed.
This audio tour was perfect! It even kept My teenagers interested in the drive. The information was very interesting and almost all of the directions were excellent. The directions to Estivant Pines was a little incorrect/tried to take us down roads that were gated off. Also, not the hours for the Jam Pot, we happened to arrive 45 min before opening and there was already a line forming. I would Purchase this for every road trip!
Worth the $15 bucks. Perfect pacing. Funny. Interesting. We discovered way more than we could have just listening to music. Short info pieces sporadically thrown in the tour. Willlook for more of these!!!
This was a fabulous way to explore Copper country. We learned so much as we drove along. Great pointers on what to be sure to not miss. The narrator had a great voice and wonderful sense of humor! Highly recommend this!
We really enjoyed the commentary. The history was very informative and entertaining. We went in the mine and learning about all of this makes the area make more sense in the now. Some of the restaurants have closed I think the German one and and the chocolate shop wasn't open this time of year. But we will look for other tours in the future to make sure that we don't miss anything. Good job
It was great! Very informative and the sights were amazing! Learned something’s about Michigan I didn’t know. Next time we come this way will have to stop at The Honey Pot
I can’t tell you how happy I was to stumble upon this audio tour that gave us great information about every point of interest on this trip. This is a game changer for me when I’m on a road trip. I will never again get in the car without looking for an audio guide of the location I’m in. It was wonderful, lovely writing, funny narrator. I just loved it.
Perfect guide to the area! We learned so much and saw sights we would have missed. Driving directions were precise and easy to follow! Narration was very entertaining!
Awesome! Once I figured out how to download the tour… Which was confusing… It was great! We learned so much about the Keweenaw Peninsula during our leisurely ride.
We all thought the tour was great and would book one in another location. There was one misdirection to the Estevan Pines. We found them, but were disappointed - the pines are not in a grove, but scattered, so the effect wasn't breathtaking. The hike was not suitable for unhardy hikers.
