About Activity
Some places must be seen to be believed. Teotihuacan, dubbed the City of the Gods by the Aztecs, is certainly one of them. Less than an hour from Mexico City, Teotihuacan is the largest pre-Columbian city in the Americas, a truly spectacular place that teaches us so much about ancient civilisations. On our exhilarating private excursion, you’ll embark on an epic journey direct from your hotel in Mexico City out to this remarkable archaeological site. You will take the sky in a hot air balloon to witness Teotihuacan in all its glory from above, before enjoying a visit to the archaeological zone. You’ll get a closer look at the legendary pyramids and learn more about their construction and the rituals that took place there from a local expert guide.
On your private full-day excursion, you will:
- Embark on a private day trip to Teotihuacan;
- Enjoy convenient pick-up and drop-off from your hotel in Mexico City and comfortable private transportation;
- Take off in a hot air balloon for an unforgettable flight over Teotihuacan;
- Witness the ruins of the ancient city unfold before you;
- Visit the Teotihuacan archaeological zone with a local expert guide well-versed in the history and mythology of the site;
- Get a closer look at the Pyramid of the Sun, Pyramid of the Moon, Avenue of the Dead and the Temple of Quetzalcoatl;
- Hear about daily life in Teotihuacan, which, at its height, was home to over 100,000 people;
- Uncover how the site evolved across the centuries from the mystery around its abandonment to its rediscovery by the Aztecs and the first scientific surveys in the 19th century.
Your journey to one of Mexico’s most incredible landmarks begins before the city wakes. As Mexico City stirs in the pre-dawn quiet, your private vehicle arrives at your hotel to whisk you northward through the darkness toward one of the ancient world's greatest mysteries.
As you approach the site, the first light of morning begins to paint the sky, and the real magic begins. After a complimentary coffee break, you'll climb aboard a private hot air balloon and lift gently into the cool dawn air, rising above Teotihuacan as the sun crests the horizon. Below you, the Avenue of the Dead stretches into the distance, the great pyramids casting long shadows across the valley floor. This is a view that has captivated travellers for centuries, and one that relatively few have ever witnessed from above. It is, quite simply, breathtaking.
Once back on solid ground, your expert local guide leads you into the heart of the ancient city itself. Teotihuacan was, at its peak, home to more than 100,000 people, a remarkably cosmopolitan metropolis of the ancient world, and your guide brings it vividly back to life. You'll walk the length of the iconic Avenue of the Dead, see the monumental Pyramid of the Sun, the elegant Pyramid of the Moon, and the richly decorated Temple of Quetzalcóatl, its stone façade still alive with the feathered serpents and mythological imagery that once presided over sacred rituals.
As you wander, you'll hear about the remarkable daily life of Teotihuacan's inhabitants, the religious ceremonies that took place across its temples and plazas, and the enduring mystery of the civilisation that built all of this and then, around 550 CE, seemingly vanished. You'll also discover how the Aztecs, arriving centuries after the city's abandonment, came upon these ruins and were so awestruck that they wove them into their own creation mythology, believing this to be the very place where the gods created the Sun and the Moon.
The story continues into more recent history, too. Your guide will shed light on the pioneering archaeological expeditions of the 19th century that first revealed the site's scale to the modern world, and on the remarkable discoveries of recent decades, from the vast ritual tunnel unearthed beneath the Temple of Quetzalcóatl to the cutting-edge technologies now helping researchers peer beneath the surface of the city without lifting a single stone.
As your guided visit draws to a close, your private vehicle will be waiting to take you back to your hotel, enriched by an immersion into Mexico’s pre-Columbian past.
