My friend and I had an amazing experience on this San Miguel de Allende & Guanajuato tour - 3-day tour including Queretaro, and a huge part of that was thanks to our guide, Daniel! From start to finish, Daniel was incredibly helpful and thoughtful—he gave us great recommendations for accommodations and food that really elevated our trip. His knowledge is outstanding, not just about the rich history of the region but also about current topics, which made everything feel more engaging and relevant. What really stood out was how well he planned and paced the tour. Everything ran smoothly, and we got to see so much without ever feeling rushed. Daniel is also very friendly and easygoing, which made the whole experience feel relaxed and enjoyable. He went above and beyond to tailor the trip to our interests, spending more time on the things we cared about and sharing deeper insights that made the experience feel personal and unique. Highly recommend this tour. Daniel truly makes the experience unforgettable!
It was a unique experience and Daniel is very helpful and knowledgeable. All 3 cities surprised my wife and me.
We had an amazing 3-day, 2-night tour in San Miguel de Allende and Guanajuato, also visiting Querétaro, and we couldn’t have asked for a better guide than Daniel. Daniel is incredibly knowledgeable—not just about the deep historical and cultural background of each site, but also about the small details that spark curiosity along the way. Whether it was a question about architecture, local traditions, or even something we noticed by the roadside, he always had thoughtful and clear explanations. What really stood out to me was how considerate he was with my parents, who don’t speak English. After each explanation, he kindly paused and gave me time to translate the key points to them, and whenever he interacted with them directly, he was always patient, respectful, and warm. I highly recommend inviting Daniel to join you for a meal—he’ll recommend the most authentic local dishes, and the conversation is always enjoyable. He also customizes the route and sightseeing spots based on your pace and interests, which made our trip both relaxing and enriching!!
I booked a 4 day trip with Daniel . He picked me up early as I requested. He's a very sociable. And extremely interesting and intelligent guy .he knows so much about the history of mexico. If I has a question he had an answer . My head is spilling with new knowledge. It was good to eat and socialise with him when not driving or doing trips as he's good company. We altered my tour slightly and stayed an extra night in Guanajuato instead of Leon . I was thrilled by this as it was the place I wanted to visit the most . I wasn't disappointed. He suggested the trips and I wasn't pushed or felt obliged to do anything I didn't. I've seen so much more that I'm still taking it all in . I definitely absolutely recommend Daniel 1000000 percent . You'll love everything you see and do with this road trip. His car is expecially spacious and comfortable too
Daniel was great! Speaks good English and he had great knowledge of place and its history. Having our own private car/tour made it easy and enjoyable for us.
The whole tour was amazing! I don’t know where to start from… Daniel was amazing! He made our tour worth every minute of it! Polite, discreet patient and always on time! The tour is not just Guanajuato and San Miguel de Allende towns but also Queretaro and plenty of other places! So if you have the time book the 3 days tour. It totally worth it! Excellent work Daniel! Thank you!
What an outstanding experience with Daniel. Driver, educator, tour guide, conversationalist, ultimately flexible. We just got back last night from a 3 day, 2 night trip with Daniel and I have to say, it was worth every penny, and then some. In the week leading up to our departure, Daniel contacted us regularly with ideas about where we might want to go, asking about our preferences (nightlife, shopping, churches/museums, food) so that he could map out some suggestions for us in advance. We were able to provide some guidance, and then we were able to change our minds, spend more time in some places, less time in others, based upon the whims of the day. Daniel was patient and supportive of making it the best trip possible. So much more than "transportation", once we parked in each city, we were taken on a complete walking tour of all of the key sights, with restaurant suggestions, stories of the history of the land, the people, the buildings and monuments... it was all fantastic. I'd recommend that you invite Daniel to join you for meals - it was not a requirement and he is very accommodating of your wishes, but we had some great conversations and learn even more with his company, all for the price of an extra meal here and there. As for the locations, we are so happy to have done the three day trip so that we had ample time in each of the cities we visited. We had heard from our local Mexican friends that Guanajuato was even more beautiful and magical and San Miguel de Allende, and we could not agree more. Our first day, we ventured from Mex City to Guanajuato, out to the mines outside of town to better understand how silver mining helped to create the town and the wealth of its early settlers, then into town for El Pipila monument, funicular and then into the heart of the town for exploration and good food and drink. Daniel's hotel recommendations are spot on - he knows what he is talking about! Exploring the city after dark was fun, though we were exhausted from the long day and early start. Second day, the short drive to San Miguel de Allende, with a stop outside the city first, then on to the La Aurora artist market, and into the heart of the city. Definitely listen to recommendations to book ahead if you want a Rooftop, sunset dinner - there are some great places for it that don't disappoint. And definitely book a hotel in the heart of the city, which makes exploration in the evening easy and enjoyable. Day three was Queretaro, with the aqueduct, the convent and a busy downtown walking tour followed by lunch and the drive back to Mex City. It was a great trip. So glad we did 3 days, not two, that we had one night each in Guanajuato and San Miguel, and a more relaxed schedule. Highly recommend this tour - No question about who you will get, this is Daniel's tour so you will get him! I'm sure that your experience will have you questioning just why this adventure was so inexpensive for getting a 24 hour, 3 day driver, tour guide and historian, and like me, have you stuffing a bunch more money into his pocket as you say goodbye.
The trip was great, and the trip guide was very knowledgeable. I feel we did everything I wanted to do.
Daniel is very friendly and very punctual on time. My parents are 80 years old. They enjoyed Daniel's recommended route and finished the whole walking tour without feeling tired. Just the right amount! Besides, Daniel is very knowledgeable about the history and shared with us a lot of stories. Very good experience.
Daniel really went above & beyond to suit to our interest and need, which are mainly the churches, history, and the traditional food, even though that meant he had to add into the itinerary so he worked extra long hours. I wish I could give 6 or even 10 stars, it was even so hard to choose only 10 photos because we had so many good photos and very memorable trip. He was so patient when we were taking so many photos. Even after we ran out of time, he still showed a place which he thought would leave us a great memory, and it really did. He also shared so much knowledge that we get to know more about Mexico beyond just the destinations, but the history, culture, tradition, and development. Don't be afraid to ask about things you are unsure or interested in, he will do his best to fulfill or give recommendations! His English is so good and he really doesn't mind translating or taking photos for us! If we had more time, we would totally book more trips with him directly, we'll totally recommend him & this trip (take the longer three-day of Guanajuato, SMA, and Queretaro if you have time). A totally sweet and thoughtful person, very punctual too with pick up time! I don't think even anything I said or photos I shared is enough to describe how thankful we are! Muchas gracias, Daniel 🙏🙏
San Miguel is worth a day trip from Mexico City. Not into high-end shopping (was surprised at all the boutiques and art galleries everywhere), but the churches, streets, parks, and town square were great. Queretaro (included on our private tour on the way back), was less worthwhile, although the unexpected waves of bats emerging from caves before sundown on our drive back were quite a sight.
Daniel was on time, knowledgeable about the sites that we visited, and he was professional as well. He made us feel like family. His vehicle was reliable, conformable and very clean. We had a great time in San Miguel de Allende. My only suggestion would be to spend more time in San Miguel de Allende than Guanajuato.
It was a great 3 days trip with an excellent guide. Daniel. He was perfect. Polite, punctual, professional, knowledgeable, a great driver his car was comfortable and clean He was very patient and accommodating to our needs and request. I will recommend him to my friends. You have a real asset on him.
While the tours in both San Miguel and Guanajuato were great, the time we spent in the car seeing the countryside and learning so much from Daniel about the history, culture and living conditions in Mexico was fantastic. He is so knowledgeable about everything. He made the trip special.
San Miguel ~ Santa Fe ~ Prague ...sister cities The phrase sister cities have a long-reaching tradition of connecting cities from all over the world. In my mind, it is their sharing of beautiful architecture, history, fabulous food, and that special something, perhaps their soul, that makes them unique and similar at the same time. As fellow blog/traveler/eaters, JB and Rene from 'Will Fly For Food' suggested, on their recent trip to San Miguel this could easily be Mexico’s Prague (Linda’s favorite city) and Santa Fe, its transplant younger cousin in New Mexico, USA. Buddha said, “once a year go where you have never been”. San Miguel de Allende has been in the back of our minds for ages. Why it took us so long to visit this enchanting city, I have no idea, I just wish it had been sooner. At an elevation of 6,234 feet San Miguel de Allende, a colonial-era and Unesco World Heritage city in Mexico’s central highlands, is known for its Spanish baroque architecture, thriving arts scene, cultural festivals, and food, oh the food! In the city’s historic, center lies the neo-Gothic church Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel, whose dramatic pink towers rise above the main plaza, and El Jardín, a magnificently manicured garden. Now to delve deeper into the magic, down winding cobblestone streets and behind brightly colored buildings in an endless array of the friendliest restaurants, cafes, and local shops. It’s like unwrapping presents at every turn. There are some extraordinary luxury accommodations and countless small boutique hotels but none more deserving of mentioning than the Belmond, Casa del Sierra Nevada, (owned and operated by LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton group, renowned for their luxury hotels, trains, river cruises, and safari lodges) and of course the renowned Rosewood, and lavish Live Aqua. And important to note, if it hadn't been for being invited to the Newcomers brunch by The SMA Expat Community Resource Center, I would never have seen Hacienda El Santuario, voted Trip Advisor's Top Choice for 2022. You'd never know it existed until you entered through the centuries-old doors from the street, a must-visit while in town. The brunch of fresh orange juice, fruits, chilaquiles, and coffee, just off one of the courtyards and among the muraled walls in the bar made for a delightful, mesmerizing Sunday morning. What we decided to do other than the hotel routine was to travel the Airbnb way and thus, we were to experience the real street level and rooftop colonial flavor. One, Casa Danzantes in the heart of the city, two doors down from the Belmond, which was handy for cocktail time. This five-bedroom four-story house was simply amazing and as told by the housemaid, Adelana, the favorite place of Julia Roberts, Silvester Stalone, and the late Lucille Ball. The other, was a three-bedroom apartment, Casa Clara Luna on the eastern hillside of Capilla de Piedra with stunning views of the city. We had more places to dine than meals in a day. At the end of this article will be The Phantom Gourmet’s list of recommended must tastes. The flavors are ceaseless, from late-night taco carts, which are the after-restaurants close go-to’s for local chefs from all over the city, to some of the trendier upscale rooftop tapas bars and tucked-away courtyard restaurants, making San Miguel an international intersection for some of the best food you’ll find anywhere in Mexico. Conde Nast Traveler voted SMA 'The Best Small City in the World' for the second time. The warmth of this city and its surrounding areas, beyond the visual highlights at every turn, make for a place many of the over 18,000 ex-pats from Europe, Canada, and the States, call home. Thanks in large part to Ava, Nancy, and the team plus the welcoming committee, dogs, Jerry, and George. The Expat Community Resource Center is a lifesaver for any foreigners wanting to make the move. The information and services they provide are some of the best I've seen anywhere in the world. This is no more evident than in the video interview endorsements from some of those who have chosen to make this place their home. Well-organized events, from Mexican Healthcare, (using US Medicare in MX) to The temporary Visa & permanent residency process, to regular Sunday brunches and newcomer dinners every Wednesday night at different venues each week, what cool ideas. All invaluable! Like so many places in this world, we may fantasize about escaping, to live a new life, lured by its location, the romance, and the kindness of its people. Do put San Miguel de Allende on your travel list, and don't wait as we did, if not to move to, but just to experience this intimate, welcoming, safe, friendly sister city, it's where you will find a land of enchantment. As Anthony Bourdain said, ‘when you travel you take something away with you, hopefully, you leave something good behind.' We left a part of our hearts there. This is one of those places that will be etched in your brain and your soul forever.
A must see. Once in a lifetime you have to go and visit this place. It's full of vibes and a sacred place. A bit uncomfortable for disabled people cause ramp up and down.
Great cities to visit outside of Mexico City. It’s a quite a drive, so my suggestion is, to spend at least two days. Thank you Daniel, our tour guide, for accommodating our schedule.
San Miguel & Guanajuato were good places to visit - nice vibe, good food, friendly locals. The sites were nothing extraordinary, but our tour guide Daniel did a great job explaining the history of both cities and was very knowledgeable and truthful. The only thing I didn't like was that Viator did not tell us we needed to pay for parking & admission ticket for the guide to museums. (It does mention we need to pay for our own lunch/admissions tickets) THis is why I took off 1 star.
Fairytale town, with beautiful architecture. This town has lots of foreigners living there due to its beautiful tranquil life style.
new favorite close to home travel. I loved it down there. A true artist and musical community. I felt safe and happy. A true artist and music community. I felt at home care good food. Had great haircuts and incredible entertainment.
The most beautiful picturesque city!! I love it !! Many musical shows. Tons of Art .....great restaurants.
Our trip to San Miguel de Allende reminded us of travelling in small villages in Europe with narrow cobblestone streets and sidewalks. The people are charming and polite. Very little English spoken by locals. The cathedral and El Jardin make are the epicentre of the town. Lots to do—great daily exploration of the town, beautiful churches and great restaurants. There are numerous concerts, theatre and cultural activities. When you get into elevated areas, the views are extraordinary.
We would like to give Mr. Daniel Mendevil Olvera and his business a shoutout for providing such stellar service! We highly recommend this trip and will be suggesting it to family, friends, and co-workers. This is a spectacular two day trip from Mexico City. On the first day, we were picked up at our hotel, driven through the beautiful neighborhoods of Chapultepec and Polanco, as we made our way northwest to Guanajuato. Guanajuato is a colonial treasure house. When we arrived, we took the gondola down to the historic district, where Mr. Olvera showed us around all the main sights. We visited ornately decorated churches, tranquil tree-lined plazas, the house of painter Diego Rivera, and all the top sights of the city. He also showed us the best places to eat and shop and even took us on a behind-the-scenes tour to the infamous "mummies" museum and around a pond surrounded by colonial-area aristocratic houses. We recommend staying the night in Guanajuato vs. San Miguel de Allende. Both towns are exquisite, but the trip flows so much better by visiting Guanajuato first plus there is so much more to do there! It is a more authentic experience and the hotel we used "Hotel Meson Del Rosario" is an affordable but high quality, historic gem in the heart of the old city. The next day, Mr. Olvera took us to San Miguel de Allende but first made a stop at this beautiful mission called the Sanctuary of Atotonilco, which probably has one of the most exquisite chapels we have ever seen in our travels to Latin America. It is a world heritage site after all. Next, our walking tour of San Miguel de Allende was a delight. Mr. Olvera made sure we saw all the top sights of the city, catered to our interests and was so patient while we took photos, looked inside buildings and plazas, or chatted with a local artist. The final touch was a stop in the well-kept historic district of Queretaro, where we had a chance to explore its streets and learn of its incredible history while looking at magnificent buildings. We can't thank Mr. Olvera for providing us high quality service and a very tailored, well-made itinerary. We highly recommend him. This trip is so worth it!! I consider that San Miguel de Allende represents the so-called magical publos. We visited it from 2 to 7 January 2020 as a family. We enjoy its people, its beautiful decorations in the village, and the different meeting centers such as the craft market, the cathedral, the house of Don Miguel de Allende, we make a tour of the great San Miguel de Allende, tour that if you visit it should not fail to do so.
Everything is beautiful many places to visit a lot of history very father the tour to the tomb of José Alfredo Jiménez, some delicious snows I carnitas very rich
