Our tour guide met us promptly at 11 AM for the beginning of our Muralism tour. His name was Balaam. We entered the former college of San Ildefonso and we were immediately impressed with the building architecture. The former college has significant historical connection to the muralists and other artists of Mexico. Our tour guide was extremely knowledgeable about the history of Mexico and the artists whose work is painted onto the walls of this magnificent structure, including Rivera, Siquieras, Leal , Charlot and Orozco. He had an excellent command of English and was very responsive to our questions. We spent about 1 1/2 hours at the former College. We then walked to the Palacio de Bellas Artes which is a magnificent Italian marble structure to view more murals by Rivera, Siquieras and Orozco, which also included the Rivera mural replacing the original mural which once graced the Rockefeller Centre in New York City. Balaam explained the stories relating to all of these murals which gave us detailed appreciation of the artwork. Lastly we walked to Museo Mural Diego Rivera to admire the huge mural rescued from the hotel destroyed in the 1985 earthquake. The tour lasted almost 4 hours and we were absolutely thrilled to have had Balaam as our guide on this amazing tour! Highly recommend Balaam as a tour guide!!

Where an entire artistic revolution began, the Antiguo Colegio de San Ildefonso stands as the birthplace of Mexican muralism. Inside the Anfiteatro Simón Bolívar, discover La Creación (1922), the first mural by Diego Rivera, marking the moment art left galleries and took over public space. Surrounded by works from artists like José Clemente Orozco and David Alfaro Siqueiros, this historic building became a creative laboratory where a new vision of Mexico was born—one that told the story of its people, identity, and revolution through monumental walls. It was here, while Rivera painted, that a young Frida Kahlo first saw him—an encounter that would later shape one of the most iconic relationships in art history.
Step into the iconic murals of Diego Rivera at the Secretaría de Educación Pública, one of the most ambitious mural projects in Mexico. Painted between 1923 and 1928, this monumental series spans over 100 panels across three levels, bringing the Patio del Trabajo and Patio de las Fiestas to life. Rivera, one of the most influential artists of the 20th century and a pioneer of Mexican muralism, used art as a powerful storytelling tool—depicting workers, traditions, and revolutionary ideals to shape a shared national identity. His large-scale murals helped define the mural movement not only in Mexico but worldwide . As you walk through these courtyards, you won’t just see art—you’ll experience a vivid narrative of Mexico’s history, culture, and people, told on a truly monumental scale.
Home to Mexico’s most iconic masterpieces, the Palacio de Bellas Artes is where art, politics, and history collide. Inaugurated in 1934, this stunning marble palace became the ultimate stage for the country’s greatest muralists—Diego Rivera, José Clemente Orozco, and David Alfaro Siqueiros—who transformed its walls into powerful visual narratives. Inside, discover a unique collection of 17 monumental murals created over more than three decades, each telling a different story of Mexico’s identity. From Rivera’s controversial El hombre controlador del universo—originally censored in New York—to Orozco’s dramatic La Katharsis and Siqueiros’ dynamic La Nueva Democracia, this is not just art—it’s a bold statement of a nation in transformation. More than a cultural venue, Bellas Artes is the beating heart of Mexican artistic expression—where murals, performances, and exhibitions come together in one unforgettable space.
A mural so important, an entire museum was built around it—the Museo Mural Diego Rivera is home to one of Mexico’s most extraordinary artworks. At its heart lies Sueño de una tarde dominical en la Alameda Central (1947), a massive 15-meter-long mural where Diego Rivera brings over 400 years of Mexican history to life through more than 150 iconic characters. From emperors and revolutionaries to everyday people, this vivid scene blends past and present in a single dreamlike moment set in the Alameda Central. Originally created for the Hotel del Prado, the mural was dramatically rescued after the 1985 earthquake and relocated here—where the building itself was designed to protect it. More than a museum, this is a time capsule of Mexico—where history, art, and identity converge in one unforgettable masterpiece.

The tour of the murals was phenomenal. My guide Baalam completed his thesis on the massive mural cycle painted by Diego Rivera at the Secretaría de Educación Pública which was just one of three stops on the tour. Overall, an excellent introduction to Mexican muralism, combining history, politics, and art.
Excellent tour of incredible murals. Tour guide was excellent. Very knowledgeable with a good pace to cover the 3 locations visited.
Very informative, passionate & accommodating guide … we had to miss our original day & time due to flight delays and our guide was happy to slot us in the next day. Thank you ☺️
Originally I was signed up for a different tour but was reassigned to the 10 Wonders Tour because of a scheduling conflict. The 10 Wonders Tour was an overview of several important sites in Mexico City. I would have enjoyed a more in depth tour. My favorite stop on the tour was the Ideal bakery. It was HUGE and amazing. Definitely worth a visit.
Balaam was an amazing guide he was do kind a great communicator in setting up the meeting and very accommodating. He was very knowledgeable and a fantastic guide referencing both art history and Mexican history
We had a great time on our tour with Baalam! The murals that he took us to were phenomenal and it was really helpful having someone there who could help us interpret all of the details, characters, and meanings in each painting. Equally as amazing as the murals was the architecture of the Palacio de Bellas Artes so we were thrilled to stop by there. I highly recommend the tour for anyone visiting Mexico City. My only suggestion would be he walks a bit slower in between the sites as we had some older adults in our group and the walk was very quick at some points.
I loved this tour, it was very informative, entertained and our guide was very knowledgeable and helpful he even helped us to get a mototaxi which was an Awsome experience!
Our guide had indepth knowledge of the history and context surrounding muralism - it was engrossing. Amazing!
Good guide. I learned a lot. 👍🏽
Balaam is a superb guide — highly informed and eloquent about both the murals and the history they depict. He put every mural in context, and was also fascinating about the relationships among the three most significant of the muralists— Rivera, Orozco and Siquieres. His love of the work and his knowledge make him singularly engaging. We give him the highest possible endorsement.
Informative and entertaining tour with an educated, cultured and personable guide.
Fantastic tour with Ana. Her guidance brought life and significance to the murals. Thank you so much!
I'm a history buff and I loved learning the stories of each of the murals we visited. Top notch and a must do!
Balsam was professional, incredibly knowledgeable and friendly. He exceeded our expectations. This tour is a must-do for anyone interested in Mexican art!!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I’m a muralist, and this tour was a total highlight of my trip to Mexico! Balsam was an excellent guide who went above and beyond. He tailored the tour to my interests and went out of his way to make the experience truly exceptional, including finding a way for us to access a Diego Rivera mural in a location that was closed to the general public at the time. He’s a historian as well as a fantastic guide, sharing extensive knowledge of the history and context behind the works. He was a real pleasure to explore with, and his passion for the city and its murals was infectious. I learnt so much and left absolutely buzzing. Thank you so much!
We had the perfect tour with Balaam! He explained everything we saw and answered all of our questions along the way. Best tour guide!
Miguel was a fantastic guide. Very animated and really knows art history and Mexican history. One of the best tours we have ever taken. Thank you Miguel!
Our guide Miguel is awesome. He got in touch with me before the tour to let me know whom to look for. He is most knowledgeable and has amazing sense of humor. Very blessed for such an amazing experience.
Miguel was a fantastic guide. Very personable, enthusiastic and knowledgeable.
This tour is very good and you learn a lot about the social political history of Mexico. It’s great for art and history lovers
I had an amazing time and learnt so much. Due to traffic congestion I arrived a little late but Balaam went out of his way to make sure I got a good overview of all the murals, the artists and the history behind them. Murals are such a fun way to learn! Thank you
This is a fantastic and fascinating tour. Our guide Baalam was super knowledgeable and showed us so much that we would not have seen or fully appreciated on our own. He couldn’t have been better.
We had a fantastic tour with Baalam. He showed us more murals than we ever expected to see. He was super informative and we learned so much. It was an absolute value and we would do it again in a heartbeat.
Miguel was great! Experience was curated and fun. Incredibly knowledgeable and friendly.
Our guide Miguel was very engaging, welcoming, and knowledgeable. I (John) really wanted to see the Diego Rivera murals, but we also enjoyed seeing works by Siqueiros and others. Miguel combined a knowledge of art and culture that really enhanced our experience, and he also has a great sense of humor.

This was a fantastic tour. Miguel was a wonderful tour guide. He had an extraordinary knowledge of art, not only Mexican art, but the art of the Western world and history more broadly. It was an incredible three hours well spent, and we were able to join him for a meal at the conclusion of the tour, which was another extraordinary highlight. I highly recommend this tour to anyone interested in murals, but also art more broadly, and the history of this wonderful country, Mexico. Miguel was outstanding.
Miguel was engaging and so knowledgeable. He made sure to make the tour interesting for our two teenage girls. He was super enthusiastic about the art and his energy was infectious! Absolutely amazing experience! Two giant Sequeiros sized thumbs up!!!
Lots of walking and standing. Wear good sneakers for this tour. Balaan was an excellent guide. The art is unbelievable!
Miguel was an excellent guide to share interesting (not boring) facts, sights & bites😋 too! I highly recommend this memorable experience of gorgeous Mexico City!
We got to visit and learn from Miguel about key spots in downtown Mexico such as Diego Rivera Museum, Palacio de Bellas Artes, Catedral Metropolitana, Plaza Mayor, the Zocalo, Alameda and more! Miguel was very knowledgeable and passionate! Highly recommend.
Miguel is a second-generation guide and historian who speaks three languages, loves art and music and is an excellent conversationalist. Miguel shared his extensive knowledge of the “big three” Mexican muralists — Diego Rivera, David Siqueiros and José Clemente Orozco while touring several sites in the Centro of Mexico City. He contrasted the styles of each of the three and provided historical and cultural context, explaining the visual references and symbols in the paintings that are not always obvious.
Ana Rivera was a fabulous guide. She was extremely knowledgeable and passionate about muralism. Highly recommended.
We love the tour. Miquel was so informative and accommodating. The flow of the whole tour was perfect. He even took us to the bakery shop and bought us whatever we wanted. We also got to eat tacos. Grabbed coffee. Definitely a must if you’re travelling to Mexico
Ana gave us a wonderful tour of the murals & the history behind them. Her knowledge of the artists and the sites was remarkable.
Balaam (the tour guide) was extremely knowledgeable and passionate about the murals and the stories behind them. A million times better than touring around by yourself, we learnt so much, including about Mexican history. Highly recommend!!
There was a good diversity of murals that our guide carefully described and placed in context for us
Rodrigo was awesome. Easy 5/5, would rate higher if I could.
This tour is a great way to experience the murals in Mexico City’s historic center. The guide did a great job breaking down the imagery and symbolism, and explaining the stories and politics behind them
Our guide (Balam?) was terrific - his knowledge was vast, and he skillfully put a great deal of breathtaking art into historical context, leaving us knowing a lot more about art, Mexico and with the understanding that we NEED to know a lot more! Thank you!
This was a terrific tour for anyone hoping to learn more about Diego Rivera and other Mexican muralists. It wasn't just about seeing the fantastic works, but about the history of the artists, and the history of Mexico. Rodrigo was an excellent guide, answering questions and offering terrific insights. He clearly loves Mexican muralism -- and it showed in the tour.
We scheduled this last minute and did not know what to expect. This was our most favorite thing we did during our stay in Mexico City. Balaam Our tour guide was so knowledgeable and considerate. It was a beautiful day.
Rodrigo led the Mexican Muralism tour yesterday afternoon for us (mother and grown kid) and it was fantastic! So informative and engaging. Rodrigo is incredibly knowledgeable about the artists and Mexican history. We learned alot and had a lot of fun. A great choice!
This tour was outstanding! The guide, Ulysses Guerrero Ravelo (Warryor) was very knowledgeable and brought us to places to see murals we would not otherwise have been able to see. His stories were entertaining, and he really know the information. Sadly, we were unable to see some of the murals listed on the itinerary as the Department of Education was closed on Tuesday. Though that was disappointing, the alternative offered more than made up for it. This tour was worth every penny and then some! By the way, the company was very understanding and helpful to me. I was unable to show up for the tour on time the day I had originally booked, but they allowed me to have a space on a different day That was very accommodating, and I really appreciated it.
I don’t remember the guide’s name but he was wonderful. He knew so much about the different murals and the artists. There was a huge Woman’s March at the same time and they shut down the Palacio de Bellas Artes sooner than they had advertised which was not his fault and completely out of his control. But he quickly pivoted and took us to see the Dreaming of a Sunday Afternoon by Diego Rivera which was absolutely stunning. Great tour!
My wife's and my experience was excellent. Our guide (whose name escaped me, sorry) was very knowledgeable and provided us with plenty of information about the murals we saw. We covered many murals and at the end walked to the marvelous Palace of Fine Arts with its wonderful murals. Would recommend any visitor to Mexico City to take that tour.
This was an excellent tour, exactly what we hoped for. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable in explaining the intricacies of each mural.
We thoroughly enjoyed our tour with Balaam. He was extremely knowledgeable, answering all our questions and catering to our preferences (it so happened we were the only ones on the tour so it became tailor-made.) A thoroughly engaging and warm historian, Balaam communicated so much to us to help put in context the myriad murals we visited. Fascinating. Highly recommend!!
This was a very interesting and fun tour. We learned a lot and got all our steps in! Miguel was a great guide.
