Itinerary
This experience curated by an artist, researcher, and official tourist guide focuses on the project behind the design of the National Anthropology Museum, but mostly, on 6 of the 11 archaeology rooms in the building. By the end of it, you will have a clear understanding of the most representative cultures who inhabited Mesoamerica before the fall of Mexico Tenochtitlan in August 1521. Among others, we will use pieces from the Olmeca, Zapoteca, Teotihuacan, and Mexica cultures as vehicles for traveling through time and understanding their complex societies. Did you know that some of the pieces we are going to see that are made of gold, jade, and obsidian were stolen on December 25th, 1985? There’s a lot we can tell you about this museum.

This was a small group tour at the anthropology museum. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable, had a good personality and taught us about the history of Mexico. He also had many years of training in art and history which helped us to understand everything. In addition, he used ear pieces and a microphone which allowed us to always be able to hear him even when there was a large group near us. Highly recommend!
Rahul was incredibly knowledgeable and shared his passion for Mexican history with us in a way that was both engaging and informative and easy for us to take in a lot of information!
5 out of 5. informative tour adding depth to many of the presentations. Informative guide added depth to many exhibits.
The tour was exceptionally well curated and thoughtfully designed. Our guide shared a wealth of information in a clear, engaging way that was accessible even to those with little prior knowledge of Mexican culture and history.
After taking Raul's amazing architecture tour I jumped on this one & was not disappointed. Last year I visited the museum 3 times and spent ~20 hours exploring it. This tour gave me a MUCH better understanding Mesoamerican and Mexican history & culture. Raul isn't just expertly familiar with the content of the museum because it's his formal area of study, he's also deeply enmeshed with the museum's curatorial staff, and so has an insider's knowledge of the decisions around design, layout & artifact choice that are very illuminating. He's able to highlight patterns and connections that elucidate the narrative structure of the exhibits. This is huge for better understanding developments in Mesoamerican aesthetic practice, social & political organization, and commercial, spiritual, & martial dispositions, however it provides the added benefit of allowing one to consider the role of the museum ITSELF in the construction of Mexican national identity. I couldn't recommend this tour enough!
We thoroughly enjoyed this tour- Raul was an enthusiastic guide and led us through the museum in a way that allowed us to take in the information and notice things we would have completely missed. We all enjoyed it a great deal and felt we got a lot more out of our visit!
Great experience. Our guide was very knowledgeable and made all the difference in understanding Mexican history pre Cortez
Raul was a very knowledgeable and informative guide We learned so much about the history of th museum
My daughter and I are very familiar with Raul's other tours. We were confident to introduce him to our friends for this tour. He did not disappoint. We all felt we learned so much. While Raul is very well prepared to provide an illuminating tour, he is also very happy to respond to questions and engage in a discussion. He has greatly enhanced my appreciation for the country of Mexico.
The museum is replete with artifacts from so many different civilizations and eras. Luckily we had Raul as our guide to help us absorb and understand the material. Raul is a true scholar and gave us the tour in chronological order while also sharing some of the influence in today’s society. I tend to tune out on boring lectures but Raul had us captivated the entire time. His knowledge and passion really came through. Highly recommend getting a guide to help truly learn and grasp the culture
Raul was incredibly knowledgeable- highly recommend this tour! He taught me things and highlighted pieces I never would have seen if I had done this tour on my own! The museum is massive and it was a great way to get the most out of it!
I have done many tours with Raul. He is my number one tour guide for myself, friends & family, even my team at work! Give yourself plenty of time with Raul because he will elaborate on any detail you like. You find yourself in deep conversations that go way beyond the artifacts that are being presented. I could not recommend him more!
Raul is incredible!! Highly recommend as this is the best way to experience the museum. He is so knowledgeable, passionate, and full of energy. Truly one of the best tour guides of my life. I booked as a group experience for a company offsite and it was a highlight for our group.
The Museo Nacional de Antropología is incredible on its own, but doing the small group tour made it so much more meaningful. Our guide, Raul, was knowledgeable, patient, and clearly passionate about Mexico’s history and culture. The small group size made it easy to ask questions, move at a comfortable pace, and actually appreciate the details in each exhibit, especially the Aztec and Mayan rooms. It’s a lot to take in, but Raul did a great job connecting the artifacts to real historical stories and daily life. I left feeling like I actually understood what I was seeing rather than just admiring the displays. If you visit Mexico City, this should absolutely be at the top of your list and I highly recommend doing the guided small group version for the full experience.
Raul canceled on us at the very last minute. He left us high and dry with no alternative but to do the museum on our own. I’ve never experienced anything so unprofessional.
The tour guide made this museum come alive. He spoke very good English which was great because the signs were all in Spanish.
Highly recommended! I recently took the opportunity to visit the National Museum of Anthropology with Raúl while on a work trip to the city. I had previously taken his tour at Museo de Templo Mayor during an earlier trip - which was also a great experience and an absolute must-see in CDMX - and I was impressed by his vast knowledge and his ability to condense so much historical information in such a captivating manner. His tour at the Museum of Anthropology was no different - I learnt so much about Mexico's (and pre-Mexico's) heritage thanks to his explanations. This is such a vast museum where it's easy to get overwhelmed with so many rooms and so many pieces on display - however, you can tell Raúl curates his tour with absolute precision. Every piece he chooses to show tells a different story about the rich and diverse cultures that once inhabited this corner of the world. I also liked the fact that Raúl went beyond showing just the most prominent pieces - there were many absolutely fascinating pieces that I would have totally missed without this tour. All in all, the 3 hours passed by in a breeze - and that says a lot for someone who doesn't usually enjoy tours that run over 90 minutes! Raúl's narration of the pieces kept me captivated throughout the whole tour - at no point did I ever feel it was too much information, too fast, too slow etc. It was just a great experience from start to finish. I would also like to add that communication prior to the tour was very smooth and Raúl was very helpful in answering my questions. All things considered, I would gladly take another tour with him in a heartbeat - if you ask me, he might be one of the best guides that CDMX has to offer right now.
It was a great experience, I learned so much with Raul. The information and stories he told us were unique, and he's also an excellent host. Highly recommended.
Less than 1 hour until the tour was supposed to start and it was cancelled. It was too late by then to book with a different company. Highly unprofessional given that we book well in advance.
Raúl was an excellent guide. He was very detailed and you can see his passion for the cultures that we learned about. He was also so kind to my mother who was not able to stand for long periods so we took some seated breaks and he would still explain the culture we were learning about. He also is independent so he isn’t connected to a large company which o appreciated. Please check him out!
Raul’s passion and knowledge for the subject matter was amazing. We learned so much on this tour. I would definitely recommend to anyone visiting Mexico City
Great tour of the museum with very knowledgable guide. A must before your visit to any pyramids in Mexico. The tour made us even more excited to go to Totihuacan and Monte Alban.
I can't imagine a better way to experience this amazing museum! Raúl captivated us as he skillfully wove together the history, culture, and art of the three key eras of Mesoamerica. Yes, he's a trained, very knowledgeable anthropologist and historian--but most of all, he's a wonderful storyteller. He brings the artifacts in the museum to life. You will leave with a deep appreciation for each of the civilizations he covers and the connections between them that still inform today's Mexico. Don't miss this great introduction to Mexico's rich history!
Review for Raúl Garza – National Museum of Archaeology, Mexico City Raúl Garza is an exceptional guide whose passion for history and art is evident in every word he shares. His deep knowledge of Mexico’s early cultures, combined with his clear and precise delivery, makes for an engaging and insightful tour. You can truly sense his love for history, which enhances the entire experience. I highly recommend him to anyone visiting the National Museum of Archaeology in Mexico City.
Worth every penny to have a dedicated, private guide. Fantastic museum, we learned so much - it was a big help to have been here before going to see other sites.
Raul, our guide, made our second visit to the Anthropological Museum in Mexico City another wonderful learning experience! He had so much knowledge and enthusiasm for the many cultures that make Mexico what it is today. Thank you, Raul, for a great afternoon!
Raoul was extremely knowledgeable and his presentation was excellent and easy to follow. I would highly recommend him for touring the museum of anthropology
Our guide, Raoul, was fantastic, not only knowledgeable about so many aspects of the history of the Mexico, but, more importantly, passionate about the subject. We would urge anyone seeking a guided tour of the museum to book with Raoul.
Raul was very knowledgeable and professional, he had a degree in archeology and history, we were only able to review 4 rooms in 4 hours, hope to spend more time next time
Raul was absolutely terrific. So passionate, incredibly knowledgeable, and he made the whole history come alive. Thank you
A very rich museum, a must for anyone interested in indigenous people cultures. Knowledgeable guide. The 3 hours just flew by. It would be useful for the guides to have some kind of sign while waiting in the lobby. There are hundreds of people, easy to miss.
I took a private tour with Raul to The National Anthropology Museum. It's such a huge place with so many cultures exhibited in it that a tour guide is the best way to understand everything in the museum. Raul is incredibly knowledgeable and really helped me understand about Mesoamerican history!! He is very passionate about anthropology and delivers information in a narrative style that really engages your imagination! Take a tour with him! You won't be disappointed!
My son and I took this tour and it was one of the best experiences we had in a museum. A very well prepared Guide, attentive and eager to share your knowledge. 100% recommended who likes history, art, anthropology and culture.
I simply loved it! Raúl is very prepared and knows what he is talking about, he was very interesting and very pleasant. Thank you for sharing your passion for history with us.
