Reviews One star for great location. The other star for a comfortable mattress, but unfortunately with cheap chunky bed pillows in a room that would be on par with a 2.5 - 3.0 star hotel in the U.S. Very bad service and a dishonest employee. Specifically the late day desk person or manger - Middle aged man with glasses. We are businessmen from the USA. We arrived quite early, we’re told no rooms were ready. Ok so we returned several hours later towards 5:00 PM. After being the first to arrive that day at 10:00 a.m., he still gave us dark rooms on the ground level. Myself in a corner with the window looking out into the common courtyard for all to see inside my room should I choose to put my shade up. So obviously I was in a cave like environment my whole stay. He was then good enough to put our company President in a ground floor room right next to the loud smelly kitchen. We politely asked for higher floors. He lied and said he couldn’t because they were “fully booked” (on a Monday - Tuesday no less). We immediately checked and dozens of travel sites showed them with loads of a availability for both days. Further, there were barely any people walking around, and each morning a max of 5 people at breakfast. Again, he simply wanted to be difficult and lied. Further, he and the rest of the staff are very awkward. You walk past the small desk each time you enter the hotel. No one smiles, never a “welcome back”, they simply ignore you and intentionally look down or away. So strange. The only pleasant one was a waiter/bus boy working the cafeteria at night. When that’s your best employee, your hotel had a big problem. We are coming to Mx City often now, trying different hotels each time, as next month we will be bringing 15 of our employees for a 4-week project, so we are evaluating hotels to book them in for the entire stay. We certainly will not be housing them at Obelisk. There are many better options in Polanco.
The pros of this hotel are the spacious suites, proximity to museums and Auditorio, and really great restaurants. The staff was friendly and accommodating. The rooms were very clean. If you would like to cook meals in your room, there is a small market next to Lincoln Park where you can buy groceries. The cons are that it is located on a VERY busy street. Rooms that are facing the street are very noisy. We did request another room after one night of not being able to sleep due to the noise of the traffic, and the front desk staff moved us to a quieter room, which we really appreciated. If you want to do anything in a neighborhood other than Palanco, you will have to make sure you give yourself plenty of time to get there. The rooms need some updating, as well. They may have been considered very nice about 20 years ago. The faucets in our bathroom leaked and the door knob in the first room we were in was falling off. We did stay in an excellent hotel in the historic district prior to our stay here, so I feel like I have something to compare this hotel to. For the price that we paid at this hotel, the amenities are definitely lacking. It felt more like a run down Travelodge than a luxury hotel. It might be the right place for someone, but it isn't a place I'll stay in again.
I had a wonderful stay. The guest service, help, patience was terrific all around. I wish I could remember everyone’s names, lovely young lady at the front desk, kitchen staff, Edmundo… hotel is clean with sufficient amenities. Very service oriented. Location is great. Elevator to rooms. They’re in the process of installing AC IN rooms but there are two stand alone air towers that provide sufficient cooling. Breakfast included and consists of a good spread. Will be staying again.
Wonderful location and staff. Rooms were really hot, and only the main bedroom has AC. It is really hot inside in warm days. Carpets and overall cleanliness is not good, especially in corners and certain invisible areas. This definitely needs more supervision. Great hotel still and fair prices.
