Itinerary
Select a Private Morning or a Private Sunset Tour and experience an unforgettable adventure in Meteora accompanied by a local guide. Choose a morning tour to spend more time in Meteora and inside the monasteries (you can visit up to 3 monasteries during the morning tour) or a sunset tour to also visit the Byzantine church of the Assumption of Virgin Mary, the hermit caves and enjoy Meteora’s magnificent sunset (you can visit 1 monastery during the sunset tour).
The Roussanou Monastery, also known as Arsani, stands on top of an impressive vertical and steep cliff of Meteora, between the Monasteries of Saint Nicholas Anapafsas and Varlaam.
The Varlaam Monastery or Monastery of All the Saints is located on an imposing rock exactly opposite of the Great Meteoron and it is the second largest monastery.
The Monastery of Great Meteoron or Transfiguration of Christ, expresses the greatness and history of the Holy Meteora, as it is the oldest and most important monastery.
The Monastery of Saint Nicholas of Anapafsas is literally suspended in air on a small rock and is the first monastery that we meet on our way from Kastraki village to the stone forest of Holy Meteora.
The Monastery of the Holy Trinity is the third oldest monastery in Meteora and is the most difficult to reach, since the visitor has to cross a downhill path and then ascend 145 steps carved into the rock.
The Monastery of Saint Stephen’s is located just above the city of Kalampaka and is the most accessible monastery in Meteora, as there are no steps to reach the entrance and the access is easy through a small stone bridge.
The Byzantine church of of the Assumption of Virgin Mary is situated in the old district of Kalampaka and is the oldest preserved monument in the whole region of Meteora. It is believed that it was built before the 7th century, but officially the church dates back to the 11th century, 300 years before the construction of the monasteries in Meteora. Remnants of an ancient Greek temple of Apollo have been embedded in the wall of the church.
The Monastery of Saint Nicholas “Badovas” or “Kofinas” was founded in the 14th century in place of an old hermitage and is located on the edge of Meteora, in the canyon that separates the Kastraki from Kalampaka, inside the cave in a steep cliff. It was renovated in 1893 by Eugenia the first woman nun. The monastery renovated and structured into six levels, at a height of 50 meters from the ground. In the temple that is located on the 5th floor there are superb murals of the 18th century and remarkable ecclesiastical heirlooms. Today the monastery has been renovated, but remains uninhabited. It is worth to follow the path that leads to the monastery and admire also the hermitage of Saint Gregory the Theologian, and the hermitage of Saint Anthony in the same canyon.

The trip was very pleasant. The guide, Lina, speaks excellent English and provided interesting information about the monasteries and their history . The driver George was friendly, helpful and very skilful.
We booked private Sunset tour hoping to learn about Meteora more than just doing it by ourselves and tour exceeded our expectations. We enjoyed every minute. The guide gave us lots of infornation and was very good to make the tour interesting for our girls, 5 and 7 years old. No rush. Personal touch. Very friendly and knowledgable. We highly recommend Meteora Trip and would use it again if come back to Meteora.
Costa was a knowledgeable and interesting guide and made our Secret Caves Sunset Hike a highlight of our trip! We’d highly recommend Meteora Trip and this specific hike to anyone wanting to see and learn about a unique part of Meteora!
What a wonderful experience we had with Nikos! He was patient and caring and made sure that my elderly mother and I had an incredible tour of this magical, mystical place. He was so friendly, helpful and knowledgeable, and really added to what was a memorable day.
Great tour with lots of fun, info, beautiful views and pleasant atmosphere. Special thanks to Nikolas and George who performed the excursion!
While the trip was amazing and monasteries are remarkable, was very disappointed to learn that private tour guide does not accompany you on the tour… they merely are a shuttle bus driver and provide insight on the drive. The description is deceptive as it needs to prominently (not 1 small bullet at the end) disclose that this is really a transfer service. Loved our driver, but it is not a private tour as title and description state. Would do it on my own next time or do a group tour as not worth the fee.
Our guide was outstanding! Very helpful, amazing knowledge and made no fuss about my travelling companions mobility limitations. He made things work, creating an enjoyable visit to several monasteries.
Great experience, knowledgeable driver (Vassilis/Bill), good mix of viewpoints and monasteries in what is a very touristical experience
Amazing, unique experience. Very comfortable air conditioned vehicle with a small group and a great guide! Highly recommended.
Fabulous way to see Meteora & take gorgeous photos & climb up to several monasteries. Especially fabulous in the summer where the driver waits in air conditioned van for you after monastery climb up & down. Guide doesn’t join in monastery but really not needed. Gives tons of history and info in van and photo stops. Highly recommend.
I requested and received confirmation that our private tour would be led by a LICENSED tour guide to go inside Monastery rather than drop us off to walk through alone. Confirmation email from Viator and tour company that that was arranged and I would pay an extra 90€ to the guide (I’d already paid for private tour). Guide and tour were fine but not licensed and knew nothing about communication. It’s really the only reason I chose this tour. The description said “licensed tour guide upon request.” Again THEY CONFIRMED BY EMAIL THROUGH TA/Viator.
Amazing. A place like no other. Made even more interesting by Harry’s extensive knowledge of the art history, Christian history, political history and geology. Thank you!
Bring water and good walking/hiking shoes. Also, come prepared with questions. Beautiful area though and great way to see the monasteries.
Our driver was fabulous, and drove so carefully.our guide was outstanding and gave us so much information. He tailored the morning so well, and we now leave with mountains of knowledge about Meteora and the monasteries.
Just enough of everything..... Nice tourguide One monastery was closed though..... Should have advised on booking!! Good period to go.... Just enough people!!
Very exciting and beautiful. Minivan is truly comfortable. The guide is been clear and gentle. Good organization. We love it.
Our guide Nicolas provided us with a wonderful and flexible afternoon of visits, along with town recommendations for later. He was very knowledgeable - and more important, listened and adapted to what we wanted to see/do.
The sunset tour was wonderful. Nicholas, the tour driver, arrived on time and was very welcoming. The car was clean, and he provided bottles of water for the trip. Nicholas was very knowledgeable, polite and brought is to many photo perfect places. We took some amazing photos. The pace of the tour was grest, we weren't rushed and he tailored the afternoon to our preferences. I highly recommend the tour and ask for Nicholas as he was a grest tour guide.
Amazing tour. Very accommodating crew. Our tour guide, Katharina, was Knowledgeable and she explained everything throughout the route. I cannot recommend more. I don’t know how the other tours are, but if you have a chance, get the one with the Katrina being a guide.
Best way to experience the Meteora region! Vassilis was friendly, knowledgeable, and flexible. Our group of 3 had a great time exploring and highly enjoyed our time. Would definitely recommend!
The tour of the monasteries was fantastic. The guide and driver were excellent and very professional. They took us to very nice viewpoints and we visited 3 monasteries.
Amazing experience! Our tour guide, Nicholas, went above and beyond to provide my wife and I with a phenomenal tour of the Meteora monasteries and landscape. His knowledge of the area, the history, and the culture was excellent. He thoroughly answered all of the questions we had. Overall, the entire tour was a splendid experience. Very glad we went on it!
The views were stunning. Tour guide was really helpful and knowledgeable. Answered your questions. I joined this trip because I wanted knowledge on Meteora from the locals. Price was great for 4 to 5 hours trip.
Amazing view ❤️❤️ Good guide and driver❤️❤️ Many pictures❤️❤️ God time in the monasteries ❤️❤️ Thank you from 🇩🇰
Perfect guide, top visit; we were able to visit the monastery without waiting.
Very good and organized mini trip. Our guide Elias competent and polite, our Themes guide trained and sympathetic, told us all the important things we should know about the area.
Aivan loistava valinta nähdä Meteora ja luostarit. Tosi hyvä ja asiantunteva opas ja retki oli juuri sopivan pituinen. Iso suositus!
Fantastic experience in Meteora. Luxurious transport through the monasteries of, with a fabulous driver-guide, very friendly and attentive. Highly recommended, parking concerns are avoided and all for a fairly reasonable price. He took us to several viewing points to take pictures, and left us time to see three of the six monasteries.
We made a reservation for the tour at sunset. Our pickup was made from the hotel with a van. Very convenient since we do not need to look for a meeting point. During the tour we had a very good time, Elias and Nikos were excellent and above all professional. They gave us a lot of information about Meteora and their history as well as about the monasteries in the area. The tour included stops at beautiful spots, ideal for photographs. Nikos was very willing not only to show us the best points but also to take us photos, which we highly appreciated. Another positive element was his suggestions for local shops where we could eat or drink coffee after the tour. These suggestions helped us continue our experience in the region in the best way possible. I strongly recommend it! Next time we'll have the morning tour.
Great small group and especially great guide very nice, informative and who did not overdo it. Normally my husband and I don’t like group tours but here we were pleasantly surprised
