Nelson, our tour guide was knowledgeable and explained so much about the Shrine, it was a truly amazing tour. Thank you Nelson. A wonderful 4 hours spent exploring the Shrine, and the gardens, the roof top balcony views were so special. I went in with no expectations and this tour was so special that I will always remember my day here. We had food and drinks, bought some souvenirs. My only request would be that the Shrine show the Bombing of Darwin, Townsville and Broome, we only viewed 1 photo of the Cubillo family and think being from Darwin that it is an important piece of history, that we should not forget. I rate the Shrine as a 10/10, must see in Melbourne. Beautiful history.

The Shrine of Remembrance is a truly impressive and moving place to visit in Melbourne. The architecture is stunning and the atmosphere is very peaceful and respectful. We also enjoyed the views of the city from the balcony area. It’s a meaningful place to learn about Australia’s history and well worth a visit.
What an amazing experience. Our guide Michael was full of energy and wisdom. He made the tour super enjoyable. He gave us lots of information and background history of how the memorial came to be. I am so glad I did the tour. Stunning beautiful building!
I had a Shrine Guided Tour at the Shrine of Remembrance. My Tour Guide was Nelly (Janelle) and she did an amazing job sharing the history of Australians in war and peacekeeping. I am American and known the history of World War I and II however, I do not know it from an Australian perspective. Nelly did an amazing job sharing the history of Australia and the importance of this war memorial. Absolutely a must see if you're visiting Melbourne.
It was a wonderful memorial building to recognize the bravery and sacrifice of all those that contributed to the service of protecting the Australian nation. The guides were exceptional in their knowledge and presentations of the artifacts contained within the building. I say guides because although I signed up for a guided tour with one guide. Others were located throughout and when they weren't leading a tour, they were assisting with questions and directions. It was a moving and informative experience. I highly recommend it.
love love love Melbourne, the city and people
My wife and I were here on a tour, which took us to Shrine of Remembrance. Being a veteran, though I did not fight in a war, these places that are dedicated to the loyalty and sacrifices of people that were ready to lay down their lives if need be.... It is entirely dedicated to the history of the people that served Australia in times of war. Interesting to refresh our memories of Australia's separation from Britain due to wars and their own priorities, their own struggles besides WWI and WWII. Got some beautiful views of the city from the top. Inside, no flash allowed. I did manage to get a few photos taken and tried to enhance it.
what a place to see! definitely would recommend the guided tour about the history of the building. Sooo many interesting thoughtful details to notice there! our guide Blake was quite insightfull and patient.
Was a very interesting tour, Daniel explained everything very well. Basically a small building with "a lot" in it.....both physical to see; & history to see & hear.
Sam was a very knowledgeable tour guide. I managed to learn a lot about the building and its significance in how it was so thought fully created. It was surprising to see how big the shrine is. I have lived in Melbourne for many years and been to the shrine several times. I am so glad to have now done the tour and learnt firsthand what a delightful tourist attraction and place of such important history to Melbourne and Victoria this place really is.
A great building. Lots of historical detail in the basement, striking shrine in the middle, good views from the top. And the grounds are impressive from the outside too. Really excellent knowledgeable guide inside as well. My only complaint was about the other visitors. Despite the ‘this is holy ground’ legend on the floor there were families kicking footballs around on the grass and groups recording gifs there. Seemed an odd use of a war memorial to me.
Fascinating overview of the shrine with knowledgeable guide. Interesting history of ANZAC. Highly recommended
Shrine is so close to the station it’s an easy walk. Tour started on time. Friendly and informative guides.
Great museum! I had a fantastic tour with Nelson, and I spent three additional hours learning about Australia War history.
This was included as part of our cruise trip and well worth a visit. It was so moving and informative. Do climb the steps to the balcony as the views are amazing. The staff we spoke to were very helpful and informative.
Absolutely a must see if your visiting Melbourne. The building itself has been beautifully renovated and transformed. Very informative and an important part of our history explained through various media outlets. Stunning views of Melbourne City & surrounding gardens. Definitely my no. 1
Very complete gathering of objects and information on Australia's war time involvements. We spent a couple of hours there and could have stayed longer. Good views from the top story although the stairs to get there are somehow difficult to find. It appears you can small group tours to take you around, and whilst we didnt take that option we found them quite loud and disruptive in the silence of the museum.
Loved this visit to the Shrine. Would highly recommend taking the guided tour. Our guide was very informative and we learnt lots about the Shrines history that we might otherwise have missed.
Excellent tour really enjoyed and very educational Guide was excellent Excellent value for money Time very efficient used
Brilliantly done , tour was worth it as it gave you more of the history around the shrine the displays were great
Highly recommend this tour. It was interesting, moving & very informative. Having said that a reasonable amount of fitness is required to manage the stairs to climb to the top of the shrine. Well worth it though as the view is amazing from each side of the shrine.
Very knowledgeable staff with a well organised tour and plenty of stories to share along the way. So much to see and do while you’re there.
Janelle was a terrific guide, told us the story of The Shrine in an informative and entertaining way.
I booked 2 tickets online for a group tour but surprisingly enough, my husband and I discovered we were the only participants on the tour so we were treated to a private tour. Our tour guide was named Dominic and he was very informative about the military history of Australia. Since this was the first day of our first trip to Australia, Dominic also gave us a lot of information about the city of Melbourne in general. It was interesting to learn about the history of the shrine and the significance of Anzac Day for all Australians. I think this shrine is very meaningful and a wonderful tribute to those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for their country. We also saw fabulous views of the city from the top level. I highly recommend a visit to this Shrine for anyone visiting Melbourne.
This should be on everyone's itinerary when visiting Melbourne. Very informative guide who could answer any questions we had. We had no idea on the history of the building and the true signifiance on the Victorian people
the tour is highly recommended. you will learn a lot about the history of the shrine, the people and the wars. we had a couple of locals in our tour group and even they were surprised at some of the facts because they didnt know about them before the tour
The tour guide made this very special. I learned a lot about Anzac Day & the significance for Australians. The building, views and story are all amazing. Highly recommend:))
The whole thing was wonderful due to the details given about everything that the tour guide told and explained to us
We booked the 10 o’clock tour as the 11 wasn’t on the website. After talking to Peter on arrival he happily swapped us to the 11 o’clock tour as that offered the light in the shrine. We used the additional tour to explore the excellent museum and the crypt. The museums was much more accessible than The Australian War Memorial in Canberra. Peter’s tour was excellent. His explanations and knowledge gave a great insight into the Shrine. Being in the actually shrine when the “light” hit the spot, the honour guard and the RAAF flautist make the visit both memorable and moving.
Highly recommend. Very interesting and the free guides are super knowledgeable. The views are terrific too and are just an extra benefit!
Had a wonderful experience at the Shrine of Remembrance tour. Our guide Karl was very knowledgeable, kind and took us inside and around the shrine. This is probably best way to explore this iconic Melbourne landmark. I'm glad I took the tour and I'm filled with gratitude for all the sacrifices of the Australian men and women.
Very informative experience. This memorial was so well thought out and planned. Our guide Michael took his time to explain different areas of the Shrine and the historical events of the Australian armed forces. Definitely recommend
Being reminded how the bravery and heroism of many including my grandfather has given us inspiration to give freely for others freedom. This Shrine memorial continues to inspire many people in a good way.
Finding my grandfather’s name amongst the 89,100 WW1 Australian soldiers enlisted. Very special being there with my 11 year old grandson when the last time I’d been on a tour was with my grandmother in the 1950s.
Excellent Guide. Information given so interesting. Loved the explanation of the Facevof Batak . Thank you. Peter!
The guide was very informative and passionate about the Shrine - it’s history and significance. He was polite and respectful.
Fascinating tour of The Shrine. Our guide Karl was great. Would recommend doing this tour and then spend time wandering around looking at the exhibits.
In my opinion the most underrated landmark in Melbourne. Should be talked about and visited throughout the year, not just ANZAC Day. Came and did the VIP Guided tour (walk in customer) for $20, but there is a free daily tour. However I thought it was well worth the price and you get a more detailed and less crowded experience. Tour went for 50 mins, there’s some climbing of stairs so keep that in mind. The views up top are breathtaking. The museum on the bottom floor is well curated, maintained and full of knowledge. Can easily spend 1/2 a day here.
It was a splendid tour and more so because I paid for a guided tour which was an excellent decision taken by me. I learnt a lot about the historical significance of the shrine and many many stories linked to it which would have been unknown to me had I not taken a guide.
When our guide showed and shared her father and his past. Our guide was very informative, friendly and spoke with compassion
Beautiful grounds. Statues to remember the war dead, the families at home, peace keepers, and a little donkey and a medic who went above the call of duty and saved a lot of lives. Wonderful building. A great way to honor the folks who served their country in war and in peace. And even a boat from Gallipoli (the First World War 1916).
If you look south down Swanston Street, it is imposible to miss the Shrine. The Shrine is a striking monument, built in Cassical style, resembling the Parthenon in Athens. The Shrine honours those solders who have served Australia in war-time. Initially it was for those who fell in World War I, but it has since been extended to c ommemorate those who served in all conflicts, including peacekeeping. There is a lot to see, you can easily spend an hour here. The location in King's Domain, just off St Kilda Road, is easy to get to. The Shrine is the centre for ceremonies for ANZAC Day and Rememberance Day.
Very interesting place to visit for foreigners especially European students who don't know much about Australian history. The guide was very precise and informative and we enjoyed the tour beside the amazing building which is one of a kind.
Excellent tour with Karl, who was easy to understand and knew his subject well. Brought the Shrine to life for those on our tour and we came away knowing much more of our history. Highly recommend.
Was left absolutely speechless after talking a walk around the grounds and through the museum inside, it's a passion of mine to visit places like this to pay respect for what those who came before sacrificed for us. I wish we had something of this scale in the UK to celebrate our heroes.
The grounds cover the various wars participated in by military from Victoria, Australia. From the top steps, a nice view of the Melbourne skyline can be viewed. A ceremony was held inside the sanctuary building during the tour.
Australia was in it through nineteenth and twentieth centuries in various conflicts. Australians from Victoria and other places went to fight and died in battle. Through the First World War and the Second World War the Australian soldiers and navy and airmen fought alongside British, Indian and American forces against Nazi Germany and Japan. So much was lost in this great conflict. Korean wars also took a toll. This shrine is on their memory. A memorial service happens throughout the day till 4/30 pm. The balcony gives awesome views of the city. The Musuem is a wonderful treat. But you need time - at least half a day ! No charge. The gardens are peaceful and beckoning. Must go there while in Melbourne folks.
We did a tour of the Shrine of Remembrance with Karl who was very informative, professional and respectful. He gave us a great understanding of the purpose and role of the Shrine, as well as the processes involved in creating it. The exhibitions, gardens and presentation of the Shrine are outstanding and most definitely worth a visit.
We went on the tour and were amazed at how much information regarding this important building that we didn't know. We live in Victoria but this was our first visit inside the Shrine. Our guide Karl was very informative and respectful when explaining the history of the building. Views from the top are exceptional. In the gallery area is the WW2 exhibition and they have a rolling illuminated honor board for all the Victorians (39,000) that enlisted from Victoria for WW2. I was able to locate my father's name in the WW2 directory but to see it on the board I may have to wait months for it to roll around. We walk from Crown took 20 odd minutes, easy pace. Really recommend visiting the Shrine and if you have time take the tour
Took the guided tour which was so worthwhile. It's a great place to visit anyway but having things explained added a lot to the experience. The exhibits are very interesting (and moving) and the views from the top are amazing. Highly recommended!
